So what I'm trying to figure out then is how the cdj-1000 (panasonic i
think?) compares at just under 2 grand. The cdj is a cd player that can
ACT like a turntable (does this really well mind you) and stores some 1000
cue pointsbut you'd have to buy TWO of those.

as a sidenote wouldn't it be cool if the people who made final scratch and
other dj equipment actually had to pay a royalty to the artists
responsible for the original technology?

 No.

If Shaquille O'Neal had to pay a Curt Flood tax either to Flood or to an
institution Flood supported i think the world would be a much different
place. If the creators of Final Scratch had to pay a Flash tax to either
Grandmaster Flash or an institution...the world would be much different.

Better too.

That's called a patent.

The guy who invented the phonograph died a LONG time ago, so that patent is
pretty expired by now. Even the turntable's patent is probably long since
expired.

Re: [313] FnalScratch package price

2001-11-02 Thread Vince Woolums
Assume this: I find it odd that listmembers appear interested in paying for
something when connected to that product is the fact that its media can
endlessly be gotten for free.

Here are some other *terribly* foolish assumptions:

No one will pirate music.

Everyone will play only their own mp3s.

DJs will pay royalties for mp3s they do not already own.

Everyone will pay the sticker price for FS/digital DJ software.

No secondary manufacturers will duplicate any necessary hardware.

C'mon. I don't really care one way or another about this product, but I
find it quite hypocritical that so many people are just ready to jump right
on it without considering their prior ethical stances on said issues of
privacy, economics, and intellectual property.

And funny too that you and I should be at odds again on the topic of
technology and art. Let's rewind. You referenced the invention of cameras
and the corollary development (pardon the pun) of photography as an art in a
blanket attempt to defend new technology. I'm certainly not a Luddite, and
don't wish to follow that line of argument. But while some photographs may
be considered art, not all _are_ really art. The same holds for DJing:

Recently, photography has become almost as widely practiced an amusement as
sex and dancing -- which means that, like every mass art form, photography
is not practiced by most people as an art. It is mainly a social rite, a
defense against anxiety, and a tool of power.

Susan Sontag, On Photography

When I began debating this issue, I maintained that FS (and by extension all
digital DJ tools) undermined what is, essentially, a difficult and oft-ill
practiced mass art form. As I'm sure most would agree, some practice the
art much better than others. I asserted that digital DJ tools erode much of
what is left of turntable manipulation as art by further diluting the music,
style and technique of the (subjectively) good DJ. Furthermore, there are
some critical issues of ethics pertaining to intellectual property,
copyright and artist patronage of medias that drive digital DJ tools.

Hello DJ,

You have visited our website and left your address, sometimes with very
interesting remarks about FINALSCRATCH. In the consumer version, running
under Linux, FINALSCRATCH will be available early next year. But, a PRO
version, called FINALSCRATCH ProFS, running under BeOS is sold as a
completely configured system right now. We ship it with selected tracks from
the catalogue of Plus 8 and Definitive Records. You can have it and play it
in a week!

Check out the attached offer and order form to see the complete package that
we offer. Than fill out the form or go to www.finalscratch.com to download
an order form, fax it to us and we'll contact you to deal with the details.

Order now, there is only a limited number of ProFS systems available.

With kind regards,

N2IT Development

The older ones are veeery hard! The best releases on Hardwax IMO:
 Dr. Kevorkian-Aftermath (HW 005)
 Missing Channel-submerged (HW 008)
 Mathematic Assassins-Calculator (HW 009)
Robert Hood-Force of One (HW 010)

As far as I know the label still exists and robert Hood is

I think it should be no problem to get them all.

[313] speaking of sylvester... (was Re: [313] song id)

2001-11-02 Thread Eli Bingham
...i wonder if anyone could comment or shed some light on an
old 12 that i found the other day. i sometimes make a habit
of trolling the used soul and rock vinyl bins in out the
way record stores - you'd be amazed what you can find sometimes.
in this case i was in the rasputin's in beautiful downtown
pleasant hill, california. along with some $1 morris day
and the time twelves (ahem), i found an old sylvester record.
its a double a side 12 on megatone records, apparently
based in the castro in san francisco. its dated 1985. one
side is take me to heaven, the other side is called sex.
now, its definitely inna '80s eurodisco stylee - cheap
unsequenced drum machine programs and live synth playing.
the production is by ken kessie and morey goldstein (?) with
remix by ian levine (???). really really long tracks with
typical campy sylvester vocals, but tons of great '80s synth
basslines and over-the-top linndrum drumrolls to sample. the
funny part is that take me to heaven is ludicrously fast for
a disco record. i played it with house and it came in at -8,
so i'm guessing its close to 140bpm (but with sylvester being
the way he is, at -8 he sounds just fine).

anyway, anyone know what the deal with this record is? who are
these people? who the heck is megatone records? i've seen one
other record on megatone and it was a patrick cowley production,
something i-f would drop.

sorry for the sorta non-313 content...

 That's called a patent.

The guy who invented the phonograph died a LONG time ago, so that patent is
pretty expired by now. Even the turntable's patent is probably long since

I'm not talking about the person that invented the phonograph...nor am I

It might have been 'Country Gazette', by World Standard, which came out a
few years ago. An ex-Yellow Magic Orchestra member is behind the project.
More of an ambient/electronica/country hybrid that makes for some
seriously deranged listening. Samples David Crosby's masterwork, 'If
I Could Only Remember My Name', to superb effect on one track. Should
still be easy to find (on cd, anyway).

Of course there aren't any Detroit DJs on the list... Even in NYC I doubt a
Detroit DJ would show up. It would probably be Tall Paul van Oakenfeld and
Sasha Digweed, etc. Unfortunately that sort of crappy trance has long since
taken over most clubs - both US and European.

2001-11-02 Thread Jason Martin
megatone was label that released a lot of sylvesters work, patrick cowley
may well have been behind it (so to speak ;)

the record you have there sounds very hi-nrg especially if ian levine is
involved - he was a big uk northern soul dj that swtiched on to disco in the
late 70's and then onto to what he termed 'hi-nrg' in the early 80's
(basically a fast and cheesy synth-oriented version of disco)..

...i wonder if anyone could comment or shed some light on an
old 12 that i found the other day. i sometimes make a habit
of trolling the used soul and rock vinyl bins in out the
way record stores - you'd be amazed what you can find sometimes.
in this case i was in the rasputin's in beautiful downtown
pleasant hill, california. along with some $1 morris day
and the time twelves (ahem), i found an old sylvester record.
its a double a side 12 on megatone records, apparently
based in the castro in san francisco. its dated 1985. one
side is take me to heaven, the other side is called sex.
now, its definitely inna '80s eurodisco stylee - cheap
unsequenced drum machine programs and live synth playing.
the production is by ken kessie and morey goldstein (?) with
remix by ian levine (???). really really long tracks with
typical campy sylvester vocals, but tons of great '80s synth
basslines and over-the-top linndrum drumrolls to sample. the
funny part is that take me to heaven is ludicrously fast for
a disco record. i played it with house and it came in at -8,
so i'm guessing its close to 140bpm (but with sylvester being
the way he is, at -8 he sounds just fine).

anyway, anyone know what the deal with this record is? who are
these people? who the heck is megatone records? i've seen one
other record on megatone and it was a patrick cowley production,
 something i-f would drop.

I mentioned Curt Flood in my first email. Curt Flood was the first
American professional athlete that had the rights to himself (the first
free agent). Before Flood...the teams had the right to buy and sell
players as they chose and they didn't have say so at all. After Flood,
players were able to sell themselves as prices the market could bear.
Shaquille O'Neal's $100 million contract couldn't have happened without
Flood. If every professional athlete in an American market had to pay a
tax to some type of institution bearing Flood's name...I think that would
be cool.

Similarly speaking, I thought it'd be cool if the creators of equipment
that come out of DJ culture (Pioneer's CDJ equipment was made for the
dj/turntablist for example and couldn't have existed without a culture in
which scratching was an artform) would have to pay some type of tax not
so much to a single individual (grandmaster flash for example) but rather
to some type of institution.

This is what I was getting at. Not that the makers of Final Scratch were
theives
