[313] New Tracks

2001-11-05 Thread deliverator
Greetings All,

Just a quick note to let you know that I have two new tracks available at
http://www.assasins.net

the first track is entitled Tabla Jam. It is a collaboration between
myself and John C. It is a very long (24 minutes,) and almost meditative
track. I know that the size of this file will not be good for those on
modems, but you should be ble to stream it ok. If interested, email me
privately and I will burn a CD. I'm quite proud of this track, so please
let me know what you think!

The second track is unagi. It is a bangin' techno track in the style of
Utility Plastics. I experimented with several parts of the song falling in
and out of time with each other. The track is hard, but still remains
lighthearted.

thanks

jim

Not to turn this into a particularly long thread, but what would you
consider to be other midwestern influences on what has become Trance?

The only things that pop into my head immediately are some late 80s Chicago
Acid experiments and Richie's early successes which Deutsche kinder seemed
to embrace, like Substance Abuse, F.U., etc. I suppose there are other

maybe some stuff out of minnesota? that place has always been pretty
candy anyways... thinkin stuff like on head in the clouds (rob williams
2 voices on H012), stuff on analogue... memoirs of an acid junkie
comes to mind... since we're talking about minnesota might as well give

stay for the cheese (and the glass).

and st. louis itself is trance to the core... i've only been there two
times, an i've never heard much music to come out of there, but i just
wanted to call st. louis trance for a minute on this list. that was *so*
fun.

you're trance too. you're all trance. you just don't know it yet... only
i do (as my eyes get all shifty like felix the cat's).

but to answer your question, some jerk in ohio probably started the whole
damn thing.

i wish superstar dj keoki lived in the midwest so i could say his name
more. he's not necessarily trance, but he plays it on his cds.

(psst, hey atomly, trance sucks.)

Re: [313] Hawtin + Aphex Twin - NY Times

2001-11-05 Thread M. Todd Smith
I'm sure someone will think this is a great article, but with lines like :
___

One song, Kladfvgbung Micshk, uses a prepared piano for both the rhythm
and the melody, and this suggestion - that a rhythm instrument can have a
melodic value, and vice versa - creates a sense of ambiguity that hovers
over the whole album: we're often not quite sure whether we're hearing a
beat or a tone.
___

WTF! Of course a rhythm instrument can have a melodic value, considering
the writer is paying close attention to RDJ's use of the piano, he/she
should at least know something about the piano, or maybe the guitar, bass,
drums, etc. All rhythm instruments have tones, a beat IS a tone.

I would really like to know what Final Scratch had to do with DE9 2, besides
being an influence on it (whatever that means). The best part of the
article is definitely: (the author is speaking of Hawtin's use of a Phillipe
Cam record)
___
It's a shame there aren't more surprises like that. Too much of Closer to
the Edit rushes by without making much of an impression; its amalgamated
thump never shows any signs of letting up.

___

Glad someone is paying attention.

Cheers

todd

in using final scratch more and more, richie has started re-editing,
re-mixing, re-interpreting tracks since he can do so and play them
out almost instantly. he's able to experiment with tracks, and
customize them to a mood, venue, whatever. in doing so, he got the
idea of going (conceptually speaking) deeper 'into' the tracks;
getting nearer and nearer to the basic elements of each track and
what made it work one way or another. hence, closer to the edit.
final scratch was just an influence on the album, a way of thinking
about the music... so that's what it means.

No one mentioned anything about his set at Nikita last Friday in SF.
I just wanted to drop a quick mention of it, and I must say, as someone
who has critized Richie's more recent (read: '99 up to present) sets,
I was really impressed. About an hour to an hour and half of bangin'
(but not the drumcode-stiff type bangin', more inna funky vein),
and then almost two hours of beautiful, deep, minimal, bliss. One of
the most emotional sets I've seen him play...There was actual melody!
And no 909 stupidity. I really felt like he's started trying to take
people on a journey again. I thanked him for it afterwards and he said
that he was really into it that night as well.

Maybe the final scratch thing has had a positive effect on his
programming...it was definitely reminding me of the richie of old...

megatone was label that released a lot of sylvesters work, patrick cowley
may well have been behind it (so to speak ;)

the record you have there sounds very hi-nrg especially if ian levine is
involved - he was a big uk northern soul dj that swtiched on to disco in the
late 70's and then onto to what he termed 'hi-nrg' in the early 80's
(basically a fast and cheesy synth-oriented version of disco)..

...i wonder if anyone could comment or shed some light on an
old 12 that i found the other day. i sometimes make a habit
of trolling the used soul and rock vinyl bins in out the
way record stores - you'd be amazed what you can find sometimes.
in this case i was in the rasputin's in beautiful downtown
pleasant hill, california. along with some $1 morris day
and the time twelves (ahem), i found an old sylvester record.
its a double a side 12 on megatone records, apparently
based in the castro in san francisco. its dated 1985. one
side is take me to heaven, the other side is called sex.
now, its definitely inna '80s eurodisco stylee - cheap
unsequenced drum machine programs and live synth playing.
the production is by ken kessie and morey goldstein (?) with
remix by ian levine (???). really really long tracks with
typical campy sylvester vocals, but tons of great '80s synth
basslines and over-the-top linndrum drumrolls to sample. the
funny part is that take me to heaven is ludicrously fast for
a disco record. i played it with house and it came in at -8,
so i'm guessing its close to 140bpm (but with sylvester being
the way he is, at -8 he sounds just fine).

anyway, anyone know what the deal with this record is? who are
these people? who the heck is megatone records? i've seen one
other record on megatone and it was a patrick cowley production,
 something i-f would drop.

Re: [313] FinalScratch package price

2001-11-05 Thread Kent williams
Disco D played here saturday (and he REALLY tore it up, by the way) and
we talked a bit about all this new DJ technology. He had a couple of things
to say about Final Scratch and the new Pioneer decks:

1. You can't actually scratch on Final Scratch. At least not battle scratching.

2. He was impressed by the new Pioneer decks, except that the wheels don't
   spin.

As an engineer I think there are some real problems with the whole final
scratch paradigm. First and foremost, the vinyl disks are as vulnerable
as 'real' records to wear and scratches. Even more so, since you presumably
use the same 2 discs through your whole set. Someone who plays out with
Final Scratch every night would put 100 times more wear on the poor things
than they ever put on their records.

I imagine that Hawtin and Aquaviva get whatever they need without paying
for it, since they're official poster boys for the product.

Then, there's the whole BEOS thing -- definitely a weak link. The reason
they used BEOS is that when they began development it was the only way
to get really low latency audio. Even as much as 10 milleseconds of
latency is enough to throw a DJ off. Hell, having the monitors more than
5 feet away introduces enough latency to throw you off.

If one were really going to do it right, you'd need a whole user interface
-- dual spinning platters, cross fader, and pitch controls. What makes
DJ-ing with vinyl such a natural gesture is the immediate tactile and
auditory feedback. When you drag your finger on the label, you feel and
hear the slowdown. When you rock the record over a beat, you hear it in
your headphones with a negigible delay.

That's why the people who developed Final Scratch spent several years
developing it -- they couldn't improve on the paradigm.. Ultimately, though,
it's way to expensive for most DJs, and I can't see it persisting in
it's current form for very long.

I don't know if people realize what a perceptual feat DJing is. Just getting
two records well and truly matched is quite a trick. You can hear two records
flamming as soon as they're 10 milleseconds apart. At 130 BPM, each 4 beat
bar takes 1.846 seconds. If you match two records within a millesecond per
bar, they'll start flamming within 10 bars, and trainwreck by 32 bars.

That means DJs who can lock up two records are correcting tempo variations
as small as .05 percent! That's one thing that always annoys me when I
DJ with CDs -- the tempo slider resolution is way too coarse, and if you
want to hold a mix you have to correct it every few measures.

his set the following night in LA was quite similar.. came on,
floored it for a while, backed off and played some de9:ce tracks, and

he snuck in that You Spin Me Round remix, as well as a rework of

2001-11-05 Thread philip

someone was asking about the old funk track 'feels so real', it is by steve
arrington,

whoopee i'm off on a music shopping weekend, anyone got any recent
recommendations? i've been digging 'famous when dead' on playhouse,
'inhouse' on comfort, the soul centre CD with the black cover (is the other
one as good?) yeah i know this is OT but, as we know, this is also the best
house list :^)

thanx
