[313] Ben Sims - New Mix CD
Had the great pleasure of hearing Ben Sims in Both Manchester and London over the weekend as part of the promotional tour for his new mix CD. (Escapism Part/One on Primal Rythms) I am very impressed by the CD and have had great difficulty ejecting it from my CD player these last few days!! Ben played alongside John Warwick in both venues. (Oliver Ho was up in Manchester with him but could not match Ben's tempo or energy). John Warwick is not a DJ I am concious of having heard before before but he has a wicked upbeat style and I would really recommend if you see his name that you go check him out. For whats it worth I know people are interested in track listings so I am listing the tunes on Bens' CD below intro / ben sims and marc 133 the deep / archetype tied @ 137 / marc 133 night / oliver ho warrior dub / steve o'sullivan dolce gabbana / samuel.l.sessions primitive streak remix / steve bicknell unwanted remix / rue east black forest / gary martin under the counter / rue east vs ben sims blackwater / octave one set up / james ruskin get down on your knees / regis scout / jeff mills alien cia agent / tbc incidents / abelde in the jungle / ben sims tribal life / hayden andre life / life nairobi remix / kirk degiorgio b3 / k.elxi shelby battle against time / jeremdam the truth / ben sims third eye / aural emote coming full circle / quiet daze the basics / ben sims where my guerilla's at / stay sounds like / paul mac galaxy / bfc this is code red remix / adam beyer love story / andrew mclauchen mighty / jeff mills tokyo rose / dj shufflemaster midnite clubs tracks 2 / surgeon birmingham remix / rue east momento en el tiempo / ben sims friends, family and lovers / oscar mulero ritual fire dance / gary martin mas suave / mas suave untitled #3 / ben sims remanipulated re-edit / ben sims Regards Mike Tyrer - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Andrew Pekler Re: [313] ~scape sc12
I got ahold of a copy Station to Station by Andrew Pekler on ~scape this weekend. It is pretty weak for the most part; take some jazz guys, record their jams, and hack them up in post-production. It doesn't really go anywhere, it is just noodly cut-ups. There is one decent track that would fit in with the first couple Pan-American LP's. The record is not horrible, but your record money could be better spent elsewhere. Re: [313] Re: Scape One
And another tune I forgot to mention: Louis Digial & Laszlo Kovaks - Change Position EP (Footwork) The people behind the London party I plugged earlier with the debut release on this new label from the Detroit/London IS12 collective, distributed through Ideal. Four strong tracks of hard-hitting, dancefloor-aimed, R&B-biting house material which will find a place in the box of many house and techno DJs alike. To be followed up shortly by 'House Ballads Part One' 12" from Detroit's unsung hero Mark Flash - definitely a label and collective to watch this year. Re: [313] detroit quality
thanks for the info bout URB 50/50 quote is very positive to me and gives hope - > There are a lot of people who want to sit around, smoke dope, not return > phone calls and not work in the studio who think race is the reason they are > not blowing up. I do not care what color your skin is, your work ethic > determines where you end up. Hawtin sells more records than me for a reason, > he workers harder and smarter than I do. - this again is also supporting old stereotypes - did you realize that ? my experience is this: any deals, interviews etc.. with Detroit artists I was involved in were transacted on a professional level and including high quality results - I can imagine some artists are not like this, as many artists are anywhere but better think of the big amount of serious hard working Detroit artists Richie is one of them - one of many and beside that - what do you think about... when the Burden Brothers did put money into submerge for supporting it ? when Mike Banks just built up the new submerge-house with others ? when three chairs tour is supporting various artists, not only single egos ? when some artists don´t join the DEMF to stay loyal to Carl ? when SOS is putting power into suporting Techno on Detroit-radio ? ... all this is about work ! and sharing powers - basics for the community the philosphy: "Richie is the far most ... " is only showing how some expectations of a "normal hierarchic" mind - using some "popularity" constructions of "Pop-Media" to proove the vision of the superior man you decide - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Re: Scape One
> ...the new dimension5 on delsin... Yeah, this is great too - one of the most floor-friendly Delsin releases to date I reckon, proper moody techno. > and what's anybodies thought's on the stephen brown twelve on transmat > then?.. nice sleeve, shame about the. Yeah, I got this today - not particularly awe-inspiring I have to admit, but not that bad either. I need a few more listens I think (he says diplomatically!)... Some other recent recommended purchases: UR - Inspiration Great stuff of course, especially 'Transition' which is going to detonate on dancefloors in a big way... Los Hermanos - Birth of 3000 Really like this, both sides great, been playing it a lot over the past week... Recloose - Cardiology album (and Ain't Changin' 12") The album is fantastic, and looks like it's going to do really well for Matt, which is excellent. Ain't Changin' is out now too, the strong opening track from the album, and a great broken dancefloor burner. Still in two minds about the C2 mix of it though... Tiger Sushi - More GDM Vol 1 The Cluster track on side A is a Krautrock thing from 1974 which I haven't really got my teeth into yet. Side B has 'Present Pretence' from John Tejada which is simply superb - like a cross between his beautiful downtempo stuff on Defocus and his housier output. Highly recommended. Fabrice Lig presents Mauler - PGM 300/400 (Keynote) Finally got my hands on this excellent release on list-member Otto's great label (thanks Boomkat.com!) and very very nice it is too. More chilled and dubby than his Soul Designer work and featuring a great remix from Duplex - you can't go wrong! Fabrice comes up with the goods yet again, and congrats Otto on releasing another blinder! Ataril - Junction/Oh Ljuva Sommar (Republic of Sweden) Aril Brikha (still using an Atari, presumably) with two tracks of deep techno which again has been around for a few weeks. 'Junction' is tougher and more minimal, more of a club tune really, but 'Oh Ljuva Sommar' on the flip is gorgeous deep chord-driven housey techno with twinkling melodies and crisp hi-hats. Quality. Private Lightning Six - Look Straight (Pomelo) Haven't got past the John Tejada remix on here yet - superb electronic broken business from the man who can seemingly do no wrong, in any style. Deep, forward-thinking and musical with dancefloor dynamics and production to die for - I really can't recommend this enough. And finally, back on the Scape One tip, his forthcoming 'Planet Funk Express' doublepack on Electrix is very good indeed - a great journey through various flavours of electro from someone with a real passion for the sound. Soulful, well produced and funky stuff... The reissue of his previously ridiculously rare LP, "Your Love Is My Desire" should be pretty easy to find now. It's great. There's also another LP (also on Westbound) that hasn't been reissued which, to an extent, duplicates the tracklisting. A wicked EP of electro that manages to be very cool, but also with loads of energy to it. Definatly worth checking. As is the new Dimension 5 12 on Delsin, Dark Cities. Re: [313] demf website
Remember this about Urb: it reflects to a large and admirable degree the market it is in. As of the 2000 census, there are 10 million people in Los Angeles: 31% Caucasian non-Latino 10% African-American 12% Asian-American 45% Latino (white and other races) Raymond Roker, the publisher of Urb, may have his limitations, but he saw the future in LA and successfully developed Urb in that direction. Thus it has become musically and culturally a far broader magazine than almost anything else out there. What magazine in Detroit can say the same? I give some credit to Metro Times, but even they fall short in my humble outsider view. (so did my old long-forgotten paper, the Unicorn Times in DC, but let's not bring up *archeology* shall we!) What real coverage does MT really give to the Arab-American community not to mention other groups and areas outside central Detroit (it is "Metro" Times after all!). But I used to work for a paper like that so I know what kind of monetary limits they are dealing with. All the same, vision is reflected in what you put in print... Of course, along those lines, to be sure, Raymond does have a weakness for putting the Chemicals, Armand, Wink, etc. etc. on the covers. I see him as sort of the Jann Wenner of the 1990s in some ways (of course, Rolling Stone ain't what it used to be, and neither is Urb). You should *see* Rolling Stone from circa 1969-70. A real mindblower of a magazine. As was Urb in the early 1990s. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [313] demf website
It also helps that he is one of the hardest workers in Detroit. From my dealings with the people who have "made it" or whatever you want to call it, the thing that separates all of them is that they work very hard. Talent will only take you so far, it all comes down to how hard you work at it. There are a lot of people who want to sit around, smoke dope, not return phone calls and not work in the studio who think race is the reason they are not blowing up. I do not care what color your skin is, your work ethic determines where you end up. Hawtin sells more records than me for a reason, he workers harder and smarter than I do. Where Kharris is coming from, and where I agree with her, it that his image is much easier to market than say Juan Atkins. It is much easier for an A&R or marketing exec to comprehend you and your weird science fiction music when you are a skinny white dude who wears funny glasses and jump suits. The larger music industry, in which Hawtin has an advantage, cannot comprehend and sell an image of a middle aged black dude from Detroit making weird electronic music from outer space. The only thing black they know how to sell is rap music and sex jams, period. This is where race comes into it. Because of Hawtin's skin color, he can play on stereotypes that black artists do not have access to. In the small indie-dance scene, I do not think color is as big of an issue. In the larger industry, where real money is made and where culture at large is manufactured, black artists who do not play off of black stereotypes do not get signed. Any good Detroit Techno artist is at odds with those racial stereotypes in the US music industry, and therefore cannot get ahead. Black people don't make sci-fi music, they make songs about sex, greed, and violence(unless they are conscious brothers, and then they make typical conscious brother music...) All of that being said, I think that if a lot of the black dudes who cry race worked as hard and were as talented as Hawtin, they would be selling a hell of a lot more records. The glass ceiling is definitely there, but most dudes will never hit it because they do not have what it takes to get that far. Juan is a perfect example of somebody who has hit that ceiling. Jeff Mills has hit that ceiling. To avoid that ceiling Carl Craig is referencing jazz and R&B. Race had nothing to do with why some people have not gotten as far Mr. Mills, Mr. Craig, or Mr. Atkins. I do not care what color you are, if you have talent and tenacity, you will get ahead in this business. Re: [313] tikiman+scion in Toronto
its acctually may 11th not next weekend, I really hope people dont show up this weekend other wise all my hard work to put on this show has gone into the toilet :) the full details are located here: www.techno.ca/clonk as for toronto being spoiled well i would not put it so plainly like that. there are a select few people who work very and I mean very hard to make these events happen such as: clonk, feedback monitor, technot, building blocks/fukhouse, mission, blue the ambient ping, electric workers... for the most part we all try hard to help each other out in some manner and its that sort of helping hand that helps a city like toronto to have such events occur. I think if there was most helping hands in other cities rather then back stabbing or every one reliying on one person to do the job alone things would be similar to toronto all over. I think the hardest thing of all is that toronto has yet to be reconized as the backbone of candian techno long befor montreal ever became the media darlings they are. I think what happens is that toronto folks are slightly frustrated with how our long electronic music history is dismissed in the eyes of the world when toronto is the city is started in in canada. oh well all we do is work harder and make it that much more better... for example clonk will be doing a 3 day stage at the om festival this year with headliners like todd sines and kero plus 45 other artists on our stage alone. So this tikiman show is just the tip of te ice berg of whats to come in the summer and early fall for clonk another example of where we are headed is in the early fall we are hoping to bring in another chain reaction artist one that has never played in canada befor... name to be told apon confirmation of this artist in the next few weeks... so yes we get alot of shows but I would not say we are spoiled... neil aka naw clonk artistic director > From: "Kim B" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: [313] tikiman+scion in scotland (and Akufen) > Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > Another duo that will be playing in Toronto this weekend. Actually- from issues 25-90, Urb featured minority artist (mostly black) on 33 out of 65 covers. That's over 50% you can see them at www.urb.com /click: back issues ironically, according the the US census burea, 75% of the population is white. and richie's only been on the cover once. Re: [313] demf website
> how do *you* know the reason why he is popular is because he's white? > No, he´s not popular, because of that - Mr Hawtin deserves some respect for his work, for sure But others do deserve the same respect - so we should take care that no one is KING of the tendency to lift Richie so high are in danger to create a king and if there´s a 5 to 6 difference on that page - that´s strange Why I think this way ? As I also work in the music-world I used to meet quite a few journalists ad musicians warning me in general like: "black people are difficult" - some were warning me that for example 4 hero are difficult, some people were saying theo parrish is difficult - meeting them in person resulted in some of the best talks I ever did have - learnt much, chatted much, laughed much, - But if this phenomenan "watch out - difficult" is also around in the US and I think it is, it does have a effect how black intelectual techno artists get placed the media - and this is just a little example of the media-game - Let´s say there´s this URB-magazine or so, maybe they sell better with a black artist on the cover, maybe with a white artist, maybe better with male or a female artist ? but if it does make a difference to their business, what do you think they will do ? -yes, they will take care that the better selling race/gender is selected - all those aspects (many many more) work on the popularity of artists - this is why *we* prefer to focus this because there is so much of this stuff working undercover I won´t deny that focusing can also bring problems - but this is the next level - we ain´t there by now out - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
