Err I'd say 2 things to temper this statement:

1. Separate the music from the fashion craze. That whole business is
going to be played out in NYC in 6 months and I can't see it blowing

2. Separate the people who've been on it for years -- Ectomorph, Adult,

I don't know.

I love techno.

I love electro.

And, some of it sounds really great together. Ms. Kitten, Felix da
Housecat, Adult, Egyptian Lover...sure the label seems ill fitting, but I
also know people who will sit awake a whole night arguing the finer nuances
of the 19,000 genres of techno. I'd rather dance.

I believe that Adam Miller's comment was incendiary, to say the least, and I
most definitely disagree with it, but some reporter's desire to write the
cultural and musical equivalent of a flashy Cosmopolitan article just isn't
enough to make me lash out.

she is unable to pay the full solo prices of Hotels, car, etc. Does any one

you hve some suggestions? She's a good friend of Jerry's as well.

[313] HPDJ 2

2002-05-07 Thread James Hurlbut
While reading the swarm article on New Scientist's site, I couldn't help
but notice the link to the latest exploits of the dj's deejay, HPDJ . It
seems he's added biofeedback and genetic algorithms to his belt of
turntable wizardry. All the users-- I mean, all the dancers, wear wireless
monitors that tell HP their location, heartrate, and how fast they're
moving. The british passions for surveillance and clubbing have come
together at last! HP then feeds this info to it's genetic algorithms as a
fitness test for which combination of track elements survive. It looks to
me like this gadget is reaching that critical stage of hype where it's
inventors start throwing every buzz technology at the thing to just keep
it standing, and I imagine it will crash soon. From my somewhat limited
exposure to genetic algorithms I'd imagine that there isn't enough time in
a dj's set to get enough generations to achieve any meaningful mutation and
natural selection results, and you would need a very large audience to have
a suitable population size. Anyways, the author fails to examine what would
really make-or-break HPDJ, the contents of the database of musical elements
that it uses to construct its set, and the way the biofeedback data is
interpreted. I think if computers really did take over djing (ha ha, maybe
when a rat's brain can be controlled with a computer ;) ) then there would
still be alot of room for artistic/creative, i.e. human intervention in
these two aspects. The artist would simply shift his role in the process,
but be just as important to the final product. My 2 cents.

 Hi list,

Dj Bone is playing Utrecht, Holland tomorrow and due to a cancelled meeting
the next day I might be able to make it and have a 'talk' with the guy.

Any good online sources of info (interviews?)? And I seem to remember seeing
Bone in a US publication quite a few months ago, but I can't seem to find it
back. He was in the UK mag Overload, that I know, but does anybody know if
he was in URB, XLR8R or some other UK magz?

Thanks in advance,

John

PS All online info regarding Super_Collider is also very much appreciated.

PPS And yes, you will be reading some of the results of all of this on the
Technotourist site as soon as I get back in gear a bit.

following up on that NYTimes article, here's another NYC publication's
take on the 'electro revival', from the Village Voice website
 (http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0218/rewind.php)...the last paragraph
 is the most interesting one:

 Rewind! by Tricia Romano

You know the electro revival is officially over when one of the biggest
names in the rejuvenated genre turns up at his gig and plays nothing but
 acid house.

That's what Ed DMX of DMX Krew did at the Tribeca Grand on Sunday night.
But as he started piling up the ACEEED, the dancefloor started piling up
with punters w ho were 'aving it, including Elliot Taub (a/k/a DJ
Ulysses), Satamile, and Melis sa of W.I.T.

Sitting in the corner was Flyer's Daniel Shumate, who I had to scold for
the pre vious night's faux pas. Mr. Shumate blabbered to the techno-geek
grapevine that Detroit techno DJ Derrick May was spinning at the
Foundation Crew's party at Groovejet. Of course, a Derrick May sighting is
almost as rare as spotting Salman Rushdie back when the Ayatollah wanted
his head. The rumor was believable only be cause promoter/DJ Kimyon has
ties to Detroit. But I'm beginning to believe that Derrick, like Santa
Claus, is not real. He wasn't there, alas.

The cost is around £15 return, the more that come, the cheaper it will be.
Not bad for getting taken there and picked up outside me thinks. This is
also a co-op thing, no profits, everyone just pays their way.

There's 20-odd of us so far, and we have a 48 seat coach, so there's loads
of space if there's a large group of you.

Manchester peeps, this is the best way if you're not driving, I've checked
the public transport and it's sh**e. Liverpool peeps - this might be worth
your while, the coach from L'Pool to Manchester is a fiver return and is
once an hour.

Once again, all welcome, we'd like to fill it if we can. There's loads of
different people going, not all of whom no each other, so don't worry if
you're on your own, we're all a friendly lot! Please mail me back if you're
interested today and then find out about numbers tonight or something.
First come first served.

Apologies to those who live miles away etc.
Thanks,

Alex.

Is Sean P on the list?

No, I don't think he's that interested in techno :) He does a lot of
re-edits for the Better Days label, which is a sub label of Z or Azuli. Get
Down is on Disco Not Disco 2 - not sure if it's a reedit. I'll ask him,
but he's not in today.

I heard there was a re-edit 12 of Connie Case's Everybody get on down

 Can anyone confirm?

2002-05-07 Thread Niko Tzoukmanis
that's interesting as there's not such a large
number of collaborations... let me think,
'altitude' and another track on the first album,
'mysterious traveller' on the 2nd one,
and 'big sky city' from 'the power of seven',
a version of which is also featured on the
time space cd on transmat (mislabelled as
'mysterious traveller')
that's five tracks so far...

2002-05-07 Thread s mcgill
Jo Whiley is dreadful in interviews. Painful to watch.

She is thought of as 'hip' at Radio 1 and is granted with interviews such as
this.
I find it worse to watch/listen to someone with supposed knowledge but who
is so far from the mark, than the classic collective minded radio
presentersm doing interviews like this.

I always new that GV could be a techno popstar. Right or wrong I dunno but I
don't think his sounds have changed too much to achieve this.

Good luck finding ANY decent music in Lampeter, mate - it's miles from
anywhere. Some friends of mine used to live there and whenever I visited
they complained frequently about the lack of anything to do/anywhere to go.
Nice countryside, though. My advice is to buy a car for the duration and
make trips to Cardiff...

There are techno outfits doing stuff in Wales, but to my knowledge they're
few and far between - especially since Tom Churchill left! :-)

_

SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT

Thursday 9th May

An evening of new old synth pop, electro,
synthetic disco ersatz funk through a wide-angle lens

at
MOOG
Newdigate Street, off Alfreton Road,
Canning Circus, Nottingham
8pm-midnight (at least)
FREE ENTRY

Hosts: Tom Magic Feet New Wave Dave
_

Loads of hot new stuff to preview this week: here's a chart for May, all as
yet unreleased:

*DJ One Finger: Niteclub Skool (Missile 12)
*Linda Lamb: Hot Room [Tiga mix] (Gigolo 12)
*Mat Carter: Basic Units (Firewire 12)
*Machine Funk Specialists (Rotters Golf Club 2x12 compilation LP)
*Misery Loves Company (Ersatz Audio 2x12 compilation LP)
*Jolly Music: Radio Jolly [Parallax Corporation/Adult mixes] (Illustrious
 12)
*Water Lily/St Plomb: Let Me Be Your Fan (Mental Groove 12)
*The Black Dog: Mental Health Hotline [CJ Bolland mix] (Hydrogen Dukebox
 12)
*Control Freaks (Remote Audio compilation CDR)
*Foremost Poets: Moonraker (Junior) [re-release]
_

FORTHCOMING DATES:
_

Thurs 23rd May: Special guest DJ double bill

*THE FRAZE*
(Mute Records)
  +
 *MIRA*
   (Ladytron)

Aside from their day jobs at the most important electronic music label ever
and fronting one of Britain's hottest bands respectively, Andy Mira DJ
together regularly in London, so it seemed to make sense to ask them both to
come and play for us too. They'll be playing the whole night, start to
finish, so arrive early to make the most of it. And try not to let Fraze's
flares alarm you.
_

Thurs 6th June: Special guest

*ALED JONES*
 (Delta-9)

No, not that one. Aled's a local DJ who's been coming down to SAN regularly
and who we feel definitely merits a spot on the decks. We're just a little
worried that, as Aled can actually mix two records together, he'll make New
Wave Dave (who'll also be playing that night) look bad. Luckily, TMF will be
on holiday. Expect some serious electro/techno.
_

Thurs 20th June
*NWD TMF*

There might also be a guest on this night, but nothing confirmed yet - stay
tuned.
_

Thursday 4th July: Our first live act

*CRÈME DE MENTHE*
 (Optimo/Disko B)

From Glasgow for one night only comes Crème de Menthe: one man, a keyboard,
a microphone and a stack of sleazy electrotechnopop tracks. His debut EP,
'Plastique', was released in a limited edition of 500 on Glasgow's Optimo
club label, OSCarr, earlier this year, and has now been licensed to
influential German label Disko B for re-release this month, having already
appeared in the sets of Hell, Tiga and Weatherall and been listed as one of
the top 10 'electroclash' anthems in the NME. An experienced live player,
CdM has another EP and his debut album coming later this year, but you can
catch him here first. Hear samples of 'Plastique' online at
http://www.diskob.com/c/cremedementhe/db106.html

+ TMF NWD playing records
_

Then: 18th July, 1st/15th/29th Aug, with more guests to be announced.

REMEMBER! ADMISSION TO ALL THE ABOVE NIGHTS IS COMPLETELY **FREE**

Re: [313] 313 in wales???

2002-05-07 Thread tom churchill
There's not much happening out in Lampeter to be honest - in fact just about
the only place in Wales where you're likely to hear any 313-related stuff is
Cardiff, but as Tom MF pointed out I've moved away and the Radius night I've
been doing there is coming to an end at the end of this month (see
http://www.headspacerecordings.com/radius for info - we have Andrew
Weatherall on May 24 and Jazzanova on May 31). There are some other nights
in the same venue which are worth checking, but it's mainly hip-hop, breaks
and drum bass stuff. Basically the Cardiff club scene is pretty dire in
general unless you're into drum bass, hip-hop, US garage or hard
house/trance nonsense...

FYI - Cardiff is about 150 miles (250 km) west of London, and Lampeter is
about 80 miles (130 km) further north-west...

Cheers,

Tom

following up on that NYTimes article, here's another NYC publication's
take on the 'electro revival', from the Village Voice website
  (http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0218/rewind.php)...the last
paragraph
  is the most interesting one:

  Rewind! by Tricia Romano

You know the electro revival is officially over when one of the biggest
names in the rejuvenated genre turns up at his gig and plays nothing
but
  acid house.

That's what Ed DMX of DMX Krew did at the Tribeca Grand on Sunday
night.
But as he started piling up the ACEEED, the dancefloor started piling
up
with punters w ho were 'aving it, including Elliot Taub (a/k/a DJ
Ulysses), Satamile, and Melis sa of W.I.T.

Sitting in the corner was Flyer's Daniel Shumate, who I had to scold
for
the pre vious night's faux pas. Mr. Shumate blabbered to the
techno-geek
grapevine that Detroit techno DJ Derrick May was spinning at the
Foundation Crew's party at Groovejet. Of course, a Derrick May sighting
is
almost as rare as spotting Salman Rushdie back when the Ayatollah
wanted
his head. The rumor was believable only be cause promoter/DJ Kimyon has
ties to Detroit. But I'm beginning to believe that Derrick, like Santa
Claus, is not real. He wasn't there, alas.

Just out of curiosity, could someone point me to the Techno Rulebook?
I'd
like to peruse it's pages to find out where guys like Theorem, Christian
Bloch, and Kit Clayton have gone wrong. We obviously have been mistaken
in
calling their music Techno as they sound nothing alike or like any of
the
 more established artists.

Oh no! What did I break now?

 First its: Press Play, Milli.
Then: Is he alive or dead?
And now: You Broke The Law!

I'm just going to quit and start that
 brick-laying business...
