[313] nice electro / greets
I'm a newbie to this list. After lurking for a week, this my first post (in years... I'll explain some below). I'm a little surprised at this thread. To me, electro is so much a part of the fabric of Detroit -- the foundation for ghetto-tech, etc. Anyway, two cents on nice electro: 1. Hashim - Al Naafiysh (The Soul) -- Already mentioned, but worth emphasizing. 2. Twilight 22 - sure, Electric Kingdom, but also Siberian Nights 3. Any of several cuts by Newcleus. Jam In It, may be familiar, but check out Computer Age (Push The Button), Jam On Revenge, and Destination Earth (1999). A lovely cassette, that was. Rhino has a four part Street Jams: Electric Funk series that is fantastic. I don't think I've seen this mentioned here. Tracks that make me cry (or at least still give me goose bumps once in a while): 1. Clear, Cybotron. I can't decide between a bunch of Juan Atkins things, so why not one of the most important songs ever created in Detroit in any genre (IMO, based in part because it stood up to so much late night airplay)? 2. Octagon/Octahedre, Basic Channel. 3. Trans-Europe Express. Kraftwerk. Also, Numbers/Computer World 2. About me: I was really plugged in eight years ago. I was a card-carrying member of the Midnight Funk Association as a tyke. At my height, I had accompanied Morgan Geist to one of the Packard parties (before he got famous) and I had blabbed an awful lot on mw-raves. I do believe I even met the Marmoset. But then my career sent me to the electronica purgatory of Utica, N.Y. and I lost touch. I'm in Rochester, N.Y. now. I was able to check out DEMF last month on a visit to the folks. Inspired, I signed back up here. And I have a lot of catching up to do. Anyway, greets. A final note: Anyone have an .mp3 of Mojo doing his MFA rap? (I'll bet someone does). I would die for that. The significance of the whole thing eluded me when I was 12 and taping songs off his show. Back then, radio seemed to suck less. JOHN KOHLSTRAND ROCHESTER, N.Y. Btw, does anyone know where I can get a copy of this (the Cowley track)? this must be another of those re-releases. [313] Candi Staton Again, Was - Re: [313] House songs so good they make you cry....
- Original Message - From: rob webb [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, June 07, 2002 3:05 AM Subject: Re: [313] House songs so good they make you cry Tristan: -That Farley Bootleg of Candi Staton's You've Got the Love that is impossible to find Frankie Knuckles (feat. Jamie Principal) Your Love? classic track, and afaik it's the original, not a bootleg - You've Got The Love nicked the synth hook from Your Love, and not vice versa. Yeah. That's a different version called Eren's Bootleg Mix. It definitely swiped the vocal from Candi Staton and the synth/basslines from Knuckles' Your Love. The version I'm lusting for is the one Farley plays in Pump Up The Volume, and numerous mixes on DeepHousePage.com. I can't put a date on it, since info on this record is very hard to come by, but it's a stripped-down version with the Candi Staton vocal, an archetypal Farley beat and bells. That's it. I have the Eren's bootleg version on React, circa 1990, and the Frankie Knuckles version on Traxx, but neither live up to the version Farley plays IMO. Last time we went around this block here, many people seemed to prefer Your Love to the Farley boot, but that's the one that makes me cry. :) Many vinyl archeologists worldwide are attempting to hunt this one down for me. To trully appreciate it, there's one deephousepage mix where he lays it on top of Can You Feel It. Two songs that make me weep in one! You can hear it w/o Fingers here: http://deephousepage.com/farleyreunion.ram The vocal starts to come in right around 7:50, bells kick in at 8:25 and the full beat kicks in at right around the 9 minute mark when the previous track with the fast guitar loop fades out. Recently I heard a UK Hard House version, which falls in the songs that make me want to vomit category. :) Tristan --- http://www.mp313.com - Music http://www.metrotechno.net - DC techno + more http://www.metatrackstudios.com - DC DJ/Production studios http://phonopsia.tripod.com - Hub [EMAIL PROTECTED] - email - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] Techno songs so good they make you cry/Wadodem
Actually, found out a bit more about it since I posted this AM ... The Orb have a connection with this 'Men From Wadodem' track: I read a long time ago that Alex Patterson (is that right? I'm no Orb afficionado) tried to license it but that there were contractual probs with a publisher or label or something - implying that this was a relatively early work for von Oswold, as he's been self-determining publishing/release wise for most of the last decade. Then today, I check out the Orb discog at http://www.migoto.com/orb/albums.html and find this: Auntie Aubrey's Excursions Beyond The Call Of Duty (July 1996) (cat: DVNT12CD) - apparently an Orb remix project which lists - Time Unlimited - Men From Wadodem (Orb Remix) as on disc 2, track 7. Not the original but might be worth checking ... RE: [313] electro is trendy // 80s sound
Afrika Bambaataa the Soulsonic Force's Planet Rock is the landmark electro track, combining funk, hip hop break beats and a drum box. In 1983, in clubs like the Roxy in NYC where one could bump into electro producers like Arthur Baker, the Roland TR-808 and their Karaoke bass sequencer TB-303 were used by electro DJs to glue their selections together and to boost the bass appeal - and those sounds seem to be have been locked in with the (historical) Electro sound. Cybotronic have been claimed as proto-techno, due to the people involved with it, but their sound reminds of electro (without the hip hop attitude) and, erm, UK pop dude Gary Numan. The techno we got to know as techno (since the late 80s) has more in common with house music than with electro. Anyway, arguments about 'proper' electro and 'proper' techno aside, *Mantronix* are the ones to look out for - with them, electro acquired a sense of production sophistication without losing the dance floor edge. If you crave for that mid 80s sound, try out anything by them - production work, remixes, their own releases - not only are their tracks great, their vocal recording work is definitely worth checking out. Oh well, so much for that...though I've done my share of spoiling already -- blurted out the results of the U.S. match for someone who'd said they weren't interested the day before. Aye, that was a very dodgy penalty ;) C'mon Nigeria! NP - some muppet moaning about Scottish anti-Englishness on Radio 5. Whatever next? English anti-Germanness? [313] E2-E4
Hi, I just got myself a copy of manuel göttching´s E2-E4 on racket records (is this the original release?) , but I hear that it has not much bass and is very treble, is this the track or is it the pressing? (I know that older records have not that much bass, off course... but there is almost no bass at all..) [313] Influencial radio shows
If that's your sentiment, then you'd probably relate to Solvent's track off the Disco Nouveau compilation called My Radio (it's an ode to an old radio show on CFNY in Toronto). That one brings me to tears. Though I didn't grow up listening to Mojo or CFNY (hey, I grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), I did listen to a couple of very influencial radio shows when I was a wee lad. When I could stay up for it, Night Flight from 12-4am on Friday and Saturday nights on CKER used to play hip-hop and RB. And I don't remember the name of it offhand, but there was a long running show on the university radio station (CJSR) from 2-4pm on Saturday afternoons which played hip-hop and electro (it was all the same back then). Also, if anyone has any mp3s of Mojo's shows, I'd love to hear them. g On Friday, June 7, 2002, at 12:25 AM, John Kohlstrand wrote: A final note: Anyone have an .mp3 of Mojo doing his MFA rap? (I'll bet someone does). I would die for that. The significance of the whole thing eluded me when I was 12 and taping songs off his show. Back then, radio seemed to suck less. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
