Re: (313) Detroit Historical Exhibit
A traveling exhibit would be good, but they need a lot more input and sponsorship. I don't know who they solicited goods from, but I would think that perhaps opening it to more of the techno community could produce more materials. Or it could pose more problems I suppose. on 01/20/03 08:52 AM, Dave Pinter at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From what I gathered from folks at the Roostertail fundraiser the exhibition is a work in progress. 4th graders are smarter than that. I understand to simplify, but if a 12yr old can be a DMC champion then I'm sure they'd get what was going on. Yes, almost all of the singles; i.e. Eye To Eye, Flash, and Death March, are included on the Elypsia 2x12. The only one missing is Sea 2 Sea (Mr. C Remix), which just might be a variation of Eye 2 Eye. Elypsia was a super label. It is too bad it is no more. Odd to think that an old English granny can be termed an unsung pioneer of techno - but when you look at the life of the person who proposed the creation of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and who did so much to popularise electronic music since the 1960s (she wrote the theme song for Dr Who, among other things), you can start to understand why... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2669735.stm Brendan

I never cared much for the Shamen either. I always liked Boss Drum from The Shamen a lot. I think i prefer The Shamen above most of the stuff Mr. C. produced alone. Oh and Richie Hatwin's the South of Detroit Instrumental mix of Ebeneezer Goode... yummie! banging acid, not really a remix at all, more like a new track but it is great anyway! (313) Octave One at fabric
I just got a mail through announcing that Octave One will play live in the main room at fabric, London on Sat 1st Feb from 2-3am. Apparently they have a new album called 'The Theory Of Everything' coming up and will be previewing material from it on the night. Also, Fabric have Francois K (6hrs set), The Youngsters live and 313's own Fabrice Lig this Saturday, I think. I went to the club for the first time (!) on Friday and was very impressed: great sound system and a really good space. I know some people on the list aren't that keen on the place but I can imagine Octave One will go right off there. TOM

Bizarre inc were originally dean meredith and Mark Archer and Gareth Hunting Personality conflicts between Meredith and Archer led to that group fizzling out, with Archer going on to form the successful Altern 8 Who of course was also one half of Nexus 21 along with Chris Peat, one of the purest Detroit Techno outfits outside of Detroit in the late eighties/early nineties. Who remembers Still Life(keeps Moving) or thier Progressive Logic EP? They also released an LP on Network that I've never been able to track down. RE: (313) Altern 8 was (plink plonk - Ksomic Messenger)
One of them (I can't remember which) did that hiphouse imitation Slo Moshun's Bell Of New York (if I remember correctly - it was distributed in the UK shrinkwrapped and complete with import stickers, along with a misleading press release to hoodwink the UK press into thinking it was from NJ), but that was several years ago. I read recently that Altern8 are still touring at Back To The Old Skool-type gatherings, still clad in masks and anoraks. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 4:57 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Altern 8 was (plink plonk - Ksomic Messenger) Oh yeah there was a 3 track ep with self hypnosis (mr whippy mix...always made me smile) and a promo 12 with the original version of self hypnosis..which is a massive tune fierce bassline Thats the 12 I have. Are you sure that Slo Moshun record wasn't by Ashley Beedle? (I'm trying to regain the trainspotter-points I lost to you over Dr Who :) It's an odd coincidence - I was browsing a US record shop's catalogue today, and they had that record listed as a US release. Just had a quick look on the Net via Google and it was Mark Archer and Danny Taurus - maybe Beedle remixed it? Altern8 were also involved with CM Connection on Network (what a label, eh?): http://music.hyperreal.org/library/discogs/altern8/ -Original Message- From: Brendan Nelson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 5:03 PM To: Robert Taylor; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Altern 8 was (plink plonk - Ksomic Messenger) Are you sure that Slo Moshun record wasn't by Ashley Beedle? Funnily enough I actually saw them playing 'live' (standing behind big cardboard 8's with a few dancers on stage) last summer in my home town of Chorley (back of beyond Lancashire Market town). Chorley never has any sort of events of any description so it was somewhat of a surprise to see them playing to say the least. No new tunes, just all their old well know stuff. ph. Nah 'Strings Of Life' had a comeback of sorts 1992 with the ravers, I would think this is the reason why they sampled it. They sampled a lot of Chicago and Detroit classics (Armando's World Unknown in Armageddon) Altern8 held a rave in the car park at 2.30 am on the 15th of September 1991. An interview with Altern8 was recorded which was available on vinyl as limited edition, together with Frequency. I bought this record when it first came out, you hear all the whistles and pandemonium in the background. I had an Altern 8 interview in some old Brit dance mag where they show them playing at a club in Germany, all the German ravers were wearing the old Warp T-shirts. Remember the first +8 T-shirts? It was the red and black +8 logo on a white T-shirt that shrank in the wash.
