I think maybe what David was trying to say is there is a series of
exchanges, a dialetic? I am sure no one here would dispute that
African-Americans have been the driving force behind today's pop cultures. I
think you guys are in agreement. There's just been a misunderstanding
because of the medium of the Internet.

Its discussions like this that really makes me hate techno and everyone that
 goes with it.

Thank again for ID-ing most of the tracks there!! Yes and those two samples
are the ones I was referring to... hope someone could ID that for us.

Derrick May Live in Norway 1998?):

Is this the first actual trac kof the mix?
In that case it is Flexible - Symptoms [ Offshoot 009 (´99) ]
Or something else from this ep.. it is by steve rachmad.

It's the second track of the mix... it's like a tribal track, same EP?

Derrick May Live @ Fuse 1999 Part One:
 - 15'20 (the track after Ben Sims' Killabite track)

you mean this track:

I don´t know it, sorry! Anyone?

Derrick May DEMF 2000 Part Two:
 - 29'20 (the track after Derrick May's Salsa Life)
 - 31:40

The sound clip is not working on the groovetech site, but if my memory
serves me well, these are the last tracks of that mix (starting just after
salsa life):

Combustible (g la tortue / warrior / c carrier) - Carnaval - Combustible 01
Green Channel - 12 Years Of Dance - Access 58 004
Disco Tex - I Love Music - Disco Tex 03
Sound Of k - Silvery Sounds - F Communication 087 limited

Don´t have the audiophile here.. but it could be
Dj Funk - Fast-N-Crazy (Backwards) [ Funk 000 (´96) ]

No idea.

Hello troopers!

I've been keeping radio silence over the last month or two following my
recent move back from Amsterdam to Glasgow so sorry for anyone who has been
trying to get in touch- been up to my neck in decorating my flat and its
hard to write e-mails and paint ceilings at the same time (the Iridite
secretary is on holiday so I can't even dictate my letters- tsk).

A big thank you to everyone who has been saying nice things on 313 about us-
the Submerge thing means we are now finally available in the US and Syntax
in New York should also have some stock by the time of the next release. As
alway, anyone who is having problems getting our stuff should contact me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and I will see what I can do.

Minto said (re: Rei Loci):

This is what i call pump your fist toughness no playin' around techno

Great decription Minto! The only problem is that some people associate
toughness and no playin' around with monotonous Hawtin-esque/Pounding
Grooves stuff and if you've heard Rei's music then that isn't the case at
all- i knew exactly where you were coming form though.
I showed this comment to Rei yesterday and he agreed wholeheartedly and
started strutting around his living room pumping his fist in the air with
his top off shouting yeah! YEAH! which was a bit worrying.

More Iridite related stuff- as Tom mentioned, Rei has another solo Ep due on
Emoticon pretty soon as well as his current Ep on Seventh Sign and a track
on the current Headspace release. I have an remix on New York's Big Chief
records- Jay J and Julius Papp- Midnight Star due in the next few weeks and
then its time for another Iridite Ep. IR004- Iridite Productions present-
Electron Music. 4 Trax- me, Rei and two new talents, Marco Bernardi and
Jamie Greer- release date set for late August. Also got another couple of
Laws Of Motion related EPs but they are on hold due to Ideal (one of the
biggest independant distibutors in the UK) going bankrupt a week or so ago.

Anyway, sorry for the legnth of this mail- just wanted to publiclly say a
big thanks to everyone who has given us support over the last while- its all
well appreciated and of course a big thanks to DJ3000 at Submerge- decent
guy with great taste in music :)

cheers

Jason Brunton
Iridite

PS I'm really trying my best to remove all traces of emotion and human feel
from the next Iridite release especially for stevepwats- the other Iridite
members can't quite understand my new found quest to musically illustrate
my post-apocoliptic vision of future reality, but they will ..when I replace
all their grey matter with circuit boards, dress them up in tinfoil and
replace their innards with old Z80 processors- ah aha ah aha ah ah (evil
gloat!). One day robots will rule the Earth! Resistance is futile etc etc
etc.

(313) now for some music....

2003-06-20 Thread Fabrizio Nahum
hi gang

...just wanted to mention 2 new records i picked up that i am grooving to
lately:

vertical cat / _remote - split ep - smallfish records 002
4 tracks fo groovy deep techno and electronics. the vertical cat side
has a minimal but melodic groove track while the second one is more of and
idm type song, but still capable of making me nod my head and shake my
ass.
side b, the _remote side has two lovely and bleepy tracks, reminiscent
of the uk/detroit connection of the early nineties. again, very groovy.

audiomatrix002 - technomusicology - amxrecords002
a 3 track 12 - excellent electronic detroit techno, kinda reminds me of
strand. really good for the dancefloor, funky and uplifting - all 3 tracks
are excellent, a and b1 being my favourites.
You can checkout their website: www.amxrecords.com
Anyone know more on these guys?

RE: (313) now for some music....

2003-06-20 Thread Odeluga, Ken
A house one from me:

Dj Spinna feat Sean Escoffrey, Mark de Clive-Lowe, remix by Paul Simpson:

'The Music In Me'.

Smooth, smooth deep/vocal house (PS' mx is instrumental) in Yoruba/Spiritual
Life style. (Rapster/BBE)

I would really like to know more abt the motivation for Spinna in producing
'dance' tracks - not that I mind, esp. when the results are this cool! Just
find it intriguing.

Also you can give the new album of Ulrich Schnauss on City Centre Offices a

I read somewhere that he has recorded a lot of music under various names,
anyone know any of these names?

Oh, ok, I think that's the Sean Escoffrey record that I keep hearing at the
gym!

You play that on Saturday, I'll play the Spinna one mate!

That's a great record, though I haven't heard the remix. There's some other
great Spinna house stuff, Ken - have you heard, I'm sure you have, Days
Like This or Space Rider by Escoffery? He DJs house a lot, too.

 A house one from me:

Dj Spinna feat Sean Escoffrey, Mark de Clive-Lowe, remix by Paul Simpson:

 'The Music In Me'.

Smooth, smooth deep/vocal house (PS' mx is instrumental) in
Yoruba/Spiritual
 Life style. (Rapster/BBE)

I would really like to know more abt the motivation for Spinna in
producing
'dance' tracks - not that I mind, esp. when the results are this cool!
Just
 find it intriguing.

because I've finally found a place to play here in Minneapolis
Saturday nights no less
place is called the Speakeasy - music starts at 10pm and if the late night
drinkin' laws pass - it will go until 2am (otherwise it's 1am)
myself and a good friend are the DJs - mixing a very eclectic set of music
(you'll be sure to hear something you like or have forgotten about - that
includes Detroit music)
no real dancefloor to speak of and the place is tiny - but very cool and
friendly and they have live bands doing jazz, reggae and techy type broken
beats - sometimes all in one set (like last night).
plus, it's the only bar in Uptown that serves mixed drinks while not being
directly inside a restaurant
if anyone is coming through Minneapolis - send me an email and I can give
you more details

Re: (313) Soul Music (was some nonsense spw was going on about)

2003-06-20 Thread David Powers
What I am talking about is a tactic of cultural survival in the face of
slavery, oppresion and genocide. This is not simply about an exchange fo
cultural ideas, although exchanges do happen

The problem faced by Africans of the diaspora was: what do we do when the
master takes away our drums, our language, our religion, by force? The answer,
as far as I see, is that they took what they had, even if it was part of the
masters' culture, and transformed it in order to re-assert themselves
collectively.

We can't play our drums? Then we will take your instruments, and your songs,
and we will transform them, add our own inflections, we will drum even more
effectively through your music until it is not any more yours but ours again.

We can't speak our own langauge? Then we will transform your language until it
becomes our own, allowing us to expresse ourselves collectively even in a
medium that is not our own, since what is our own has been stolen from us.

We can't practice our religion? Then we will follow yours, but in such a way
that everything that matters is still there, your saints will be taken on a
journey to Africa, they will now function as our own gods once did, we will go
to catholic church and at the same time we will preserve the traditions which
we have always followed.

It is not only a question of black and white, it is something faced by all
kinds of oppresed people. BORROWING DOES NOT IMPLY LACK OF INGENUITY OR
DEFICIENCY!!! Rather it implies a joyful pragmaticism that allows one to
create no matter what circumstances one is faced with. It does not matter what
material elements you begin with, it only matters whate creative use you make
of what you have. Use the enemy's resources against them.

So if you have 303 808 and 909, use that. If you have a laptop, use that. If
you have a washboard and a harmonica, use that. Use your poverty as a
strength, transform your disadvantages into advantages. Empower yourself.

The techno philosophy of DIY as pioneered by the Detroit crew can be seen in
this light as an extension of the creative strategy developed time and again by
the Africans of the diaspora.

I saw some of his set, which was fantastic - but he was on at the same time
as Mills who absolutely rocked it, so I was torn between the two for a
couple of hours.

The end of Mills' set was off the hook - he took the 909 off its stand
behind the decks and carried it to the front of the stage where he crouched
down and worked it for about five minutes with 10,000 people going
apeshit...

 Was it recorded?

Yep, with video too: http://sonar.emisiondigital.com/ingles/

dancefloors alongside the best our city has to offer.

Here, he takes us on an hour-long journey through the some of the deepest,
most cavernous grooves that have made their way to vinyl. Twenty-nine cuts
