Man, this is the kind of thing that makes Alex Jones seem like a prophet. I worry about all my fellow ravers. I hope people are OK, maybe we can get some reports of what it was like? It's strange to say the least that so many cities got knocked out at around the same time, 4pm. I don't want to believe it, but my heart is not feeling good about this. RE: (313) Power outages - update
http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/2406544/detail.html POSTED: 4:24 p.m. EDT August 14, 2003 UPDATED: 7:51 p.m. EDT August 14, 2003 Most of southeast Michigan remains in the dark as nightfall starts to settle into the state. The mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick told Local 4 that power should be back to most customers in southeast Michigan before dark. And a spokesperson from Detroit's main supplier of electricity said power will return gradually. Local 4 reported that power came back around 7:45 p.m. in Farmington, Farmington Hills, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Lake Orion and Oxford. Other areas are still without power. A wide area of power failures include most of metro Detroit and the outage is more widespread than just southeast Michigan. The main outage happened around 4:14 p.m. Thursday. Parts of Toledo, Ohio, are already starting to get power back. A spokesman from DTE said he believes the outage to southeast Michigan came from Ontario. Tony Early of DTE said about 2.1 million customers in southeast Michigan are affected by the outage. He said it will take hours before power starts coming back to customers and it could be into Friday morning. As we start to bring the system up, we don't want to overload the system. It will be a very deliberate process. One of the issues Friday will be that it is going to be a very hot day. We are urging customers to shut off their electrical equipment and turn off the air conditioning, Early said. Power plants in Bell River, Monroe and the Greenwood site have experienced damage, Early said. Some areas are also experiencing a shortage of water. Some power pumping stations are out and they may be starting to lose water pressure, Early said. Power outages have been reported in New York, Cleveland, Syracuse, Utica, Albany, N.Y., plus areas of Connecticut, Ohio, Toronto and Ottawa. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel closed once power was lost. The Federal Aviation Administration said Detroit Metropolitan Airport remains open. But a woman answering the phone at the facility said air traffic has slowed. Gov. Jennifer Granholm was meeting with emergency officials at state police headquarters in Lansing. Employees were evacuated from the state Capitol building in Lansing shortly after the outage began. People who work at Detroit's City-County building will not have to report Friday, Local 4 reported. The building will be closed. Officials are advising residents to boil any water they may be using as a safety precaution. Many street lights are out in many parts of southeast Michigan causing traffic problems. Drivers are advised to treat lights as a four-way stop. The blackout apparently was due to natural causes and there was no sign of terrorism, officials in New York and Washington said. Macomb County has declared a state of emergency telling residents to not leave their houses unless it is an emergency situation and reduce usage of electricity. Power Returning To New York The power is starting to come back in some areas, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. We will be starting up power in the city, Bloomberg said. It will take a decent amount of time -- hours not minutes -- and nobody can be any more specific than that. Television footage showed masses of pedestrians pouring onto the streets in 90-degree heat amid massive traffic jams caused by stoplight failure. Travel was crippled throughout the affected areas when the outage struck at about 4 p.m. ET. (Full Story.) New York City Hall has been operating on a backup generator and has power, and all major airports and subway systems in the area are blacked out. Shortly before 5:30 p.m. ET, New York Gov. George Pataki declared a state of emergency. In northern Ohio, businesses and residents are reporting power outages from Toledo to Cleveland (Full Story On Cleveland). Portions of Connecticut, including Hartford, also have experienced power losses. WNBC-TV in New York reported that the outage likely was triggered by an overload at the Niagara Mohawk power grid near Buffalo, N.Y. Bloomberg said the facility has been shut down, calling the overload a natural occurrence. I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that there is no evidence of terrorism, Bloomberg said. Niagara Mohawk, a National Grid USA company based in Syracuse, N.Y., provides electric service to about 1.5 million customers and natural gas to about 540,000 customers in upstate New York. Stay tuned to Local 4 and ClickOnDetroit.com for more on this breaking story. [EMAIL PROTECTED] nder.co.uk To: DJ Entropy [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org cc:

Hear hear! I heartily agree, although I will be checking the facts on this one, it seems odd. The last one this bad was the same time of year, back in 1996. Maybe it's the heat? Was reading an interesting thing on GNN about a strategic vote for Dean in 2004...I dunno, it's not even my country! You have nothing to fear except fear itself (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain) Are you quoting the fromthewilderness.com advert?? Did you see it go out? And if so, can you say anything about it's effect? Nothing like that would ever happen in Britain, it's more restrained. I think Mike Ruppert is a real dude. Goldie/Metalheadz - Terminator is a massive tune - think it has just been reissued; Inner City Life is great too and the Timeless LP. Goldie went down hill in a big way after that... i have to disagree with this as well. while his second LP wasnt anywhere near as good as timeless, any track or rmx by Rufige Cru is pretty much essential. the liquid fingers rmx is totally larry heard making a jungle tune, that beachdrifta track has one of the best string lines ever, totally detroit styled emotional dance music. and the shadow which he did in 97 with rob playford is another dark cinematic emotional masterpiece. i also cant say enough about goldie. he is THE MAN. Shy FX - most stuff on Ebony and SOUR is brilliant - Original Nuttah with UK Apachi has the maddest fast rapping on it you ever heard - was recently reissued; Gangsta Kid probably the next one I'd pick out as a recommendation (also Gangsta Kid II!). Also check Bambaataa, Cry (T-Power remix) id definitely say that shy has no 313 relevance, but he's still really good. he's churned out enough anthems without putting out much if any filler material. its crazy. Omni Trio - Renegade Snares is their big tune - just reissued but don't think it has the original mix on it... the high contrast mix is very good though. it maintains so much of the original that its impossible to not like it. omni trio for me is the most consistantly detroit drum and bass artist. Alex Reece - Pulp Friction - classic tune, gets used quite a lot on TV these days for some reason! Alex remixed Model 500 tune on RS though I think it was the Frank de Wulf mix I preferred; also his remix of Tricky's Brand New Your Retro... alex reese is another very techno influenced cat. some of the fallen angels stuff from 99-00 was like techno with a fast beat. Jonny L - Piper Grooverider remix jonny l's recent stuff is actually structured just like a harder more loop based techno track. lots of loops and no breakdowns, the basslines even sound like some harder euro techno. good stuff though, very funky. Prizna - Fire - this one got reissued a while back and is a on the same lines as Original Nuttah except much much much much better. fire and the arsonist are 2 of the best ragga tunes ever, ive never seen them get played without being rewound. Origin Unknown - Valley of the Shadows - just reissued - it tends to appear for a couple of weeks each year and then vanish; sometimes known as Long Dark Tunnel... someone mentioned pfm's cruising detroit on the storm from the east comp. thats the tune. both storm from the east comps are good. i dare anyone who doesnt like jungle to listen to photek's rmx of the ez rollers' believe (on SFTE 1) and try to say that jungle isnt a beautiful emotional expressive form of dance music. tom andythepooh.com

too many great tunes to be just a top 10. ive got a good cross section of the styles ive been rocking on this chart: 1. The Dells - Get On Down (Theo Parrish Edit) - Ugly Edits 4 2. RE: (313) ID required, plus a little London spam
I saw this yesterday and listened to it too. It's a tool but it's a not too average one. Side A is just really various ways of doing a breakbeat for about 7 mins with really not much else going on. It's the least impressive track. Side B uses a highly processed string sample and not much else, but it does create a real atmosphere. I listened all the way through and there is no variation, hence my assignment of it as a tool. It could be useful for some folks who like to drop things in only as an interval between another mix, before the other track is out - or as a very long accompaniment to something with more definition or whatever. I doubt it's anyone well-known trying to create a stir - although ok, it really isn't anything that special. I didn't buy it. I did buy the Pavel Kostuik (sp?) 'mini-LP' though - buy on sight. Also Mute, 'Direct Cuts' EP on Running Back. Now *that* is a real Detroit groove, albeit via Frankfurt am Main! k -Original Message- From: Bleep43 [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2003 8:30 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) ID required, plus a little London spam I've been sent a 12 with no info with it today - all it has on it is Underground Vol 1 Detroit and that's it. - Side B is a needs-ish (I'm reminded of walking through circles) fairly hypnotic house track. Matt MacQueen Didn't Lemon D also do a track titled simply Detroit ? or maybe I am confusing it with this Jazz Juice thing sorry don't own either so I can't verify, but I remember hearing it and really hearing the influence/homage of it all... hmm. Maybe he did. I know Jonny L *certainly* did have a track called 'Detroit' Find it on the 'Sawtooth' LP, (XL, '98). It really sticks out as it's not d'nb' on a d'n'b LP. It's sort of breaking electro with a clear Detroity phrase throughout and a big bassline. I remember some people at the time liked it but put it aside as it's hard to mix 'cause the intro has a diminishing time signature - losing a quarter beat each bar - or something like that. Nice track overall though. k

fxck power outages. of course I live 2 hours from detroit now, and left my house at 3pm so I could drink some beers and bbq before heading over to see traxx, twonz, and theo parrish. you all know that at around 4:15pm, the power went out and Im assuming (safely I imagine) that the event didn't go down, unless it was featuring lots of candles and generators. so I ended up trapped in ann arbor, unable to get money from the bank, no food, no ac, and my friends place is the top of a 3 story house. it was 85 degrees in his house when I left to take my chances with i-75 at 4am this morning. at least my car has tunes and ac :P I hope you're all faring well, and that you can find some peace despite the glaring technology void left by the power outage. RE: (313) Power outages
The outage covered the midwest and east coast, including Detroit, Lansing, northern Ohio, New York State, Connecticut, New Jersey, and all of Ontario except the far western part of the province. Windsor (in Canada, just across the river from Detroit) came back on slowly starting around midnight, but I think only because Canadian energy sort of detached itself from the U.S. power grid to get us up faster. But we've been going on and off sporadically all morning again, so who knows if we'll stay up. Joe/r3dshift: Hopefully power will be back in downtown Detroit by tomorrow night (it's back in Corktown now) because the lineup you missed (Traxx, Deecoy, Hieroglyphic Being, no Theo though) is scheduled to play at Untitled. (313) [OT]RE: (313) Power outages
On topic track name : Energy Flash - Beltram Really it has to do with the deregulation of the energy industry that went on in this country around 1998. The US, with its faith in the market, decided it would be good to treat essential human services as commodities to be bought and sold for profit, making the electricity system as volatile as the stock market. In fact the energy wholesalers (people like Enron and Global Crossing, you know those companies that stole billions from taxpayers and employees and got a slap on the wrist?) are at an incentive to keep the system dangerously low in reserves, because they are paid more for providing reserve energy (that is energy below 18% of the capacity of the system) than they are for providing energy above the 18% checkmark. This means that after 1998 the local energy market in NY state was providing only around 10% of the capacity of the system, the rest was distributed from out of state investors or wholesalers, most of it from Canada who makes a lot of income by providing power to the US. This is what happened here in California a year and a half ago when Enron was busy shuttling power in and out of California getting paid for the energy each time it entered the state and other dirty tricks. Of course the Bush administration will use this as an excuse to build more power plants and rush the permitting process, sidelining any weak environmental standards and community issues still in place. Welcome to neocon xtreme capitalism, where even terrorist threats get sold on the market! Oops, back to techno... _ hurlbot www.hurlbotics.com/mp3 _

Didn't Lemon D also do a track titled simply Detroit ? or maybe I am confusing it with this Jazz Juice thing sorry don't own either so I can't verify, but I remember hearing it and really hearing the influence/homage of it all... hmm. Maybe he did. I know Jonny L *certainly* did have a track called 'Detroit' yep that's the one, sorry mixed up my First Name + Initial DnB producers.. my bad. Great track though :) peace, Matt MacQueen

Re: (313) Power outages
Joe/r3dshift opined: I hope you're all faring well, and that you can find some peace despite the glaring technology void left by the power outage. I'm really sad that the best event in the last couple months just happened to fall on the night of the worst outage in history. Worst outage in history? Ah, someone that didn't live through the Great Blackout of November 1965, I see :-) (30,000,000+ people lost power that time.) Jamie Hurlbut dropped some science: Really it has to do with the deregulation of the energy industry that went on in this country around 1998. Post of the Year. Succinct and oh-so-true. It's unbelievable how evil this stuff truly is. California is the laughing stock of the world - we're now having a circus erm ... I mean, a recall election in part because Governor Gray Davis is such a panzy that he allowed us to get caught up in buying electricity contracts (after Enron scr*wed us) for 4 times the going rate because our backs were to the wall. Whee! Ob313: The blackout prevented the first Iggy The Stooges show in Michigan in 30 years. - Greg

Hi everyone. I haven't been reading this thread and the power here is still inconsistent (on again off again). There's a mass exodus at the gas lines unlike anything I've seen, and according to my parents nothing like they've seen since the '67 riots. I apologize if this ground has been covered previously in the thread, but I hope those of you without power in Detroit (or with minimal power) are keeping an eye out for your neighbor, especially the elderly ones. I know it's a very boy scout thing to say, but in situations like these I think it's most appropriate. I'm going to sound really preachy, but take two minutes out of your boredom or away from that battery powered laptop and check to see if they're doing okay. Now I'm going to go back to my porch and strum a few songs on the ol' guitar. stay cool (literally...it's muggy and 86 degrees out there) rob

RE: (313) The lights go on Sunday
From CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/08/15/blackout.detroit/index.html Power may not be restored to all of Detroit Edison's 2.1 million customers until Sunday as the area copes with the massive power outage that hit the northeastern United States, officials said. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said efforts were underway to restore power to residents in Detroit, Lansing and Ann Arbor. She said Detroit Edison told her they can't say when all power will be fully restored, but that it might take until Sunday. Detroit Metropolitan Airport was closed for up to six hours Thursday and several flights canceled before opening again for air traffic early Friday, according to Liz Boyd, the governor's press secretary. The power outage also affected water supplies because water in the state is distributed by electric pumps, said Mary Dettloff, Granholm's deputy press secretary. Some areas of Saginaw and Bay City were also suffering from power outages, she said. Meanwhile, the governor has ordered her staff to move to the state's emergency operations center in Lansing. All personnel was called in to duty Thursday night by Detroit's police chief, said Dettloff. A police spokeswoman said the city of Detroit remained calm and peaceful Friday morning. Just south of Detroit in Melvindale, a two-alarm fire broke out shortly after midnight at the Marathon Oil Refinery, but was under control by Friday morning, according to the Detroit Fire Department. The Michigan State Police has closed both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 75, which runs by the refinery property, a state police spokesman said Friday morning. well piss. that makes for a long hot techno-less weekend - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, August 15, 2003 3:21 PM Subject: RE: (313) The lights go on Sunday From CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/08/15/blackout.detroit/index.html Power may not be restored to all of Detroit Edison's 2.1 million customers until Sunday as the area copes with the massive power outage that hit the northeastern United States, officials said.
RE: (313) Power outages
For info on the background of the power outage, try this link: http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=10ItemID=4051 As I suspected, this seems to be a direct result of the push for deregulation of the electrical industry, an idea which apparently was first pushed in the UK under Thatcher. So now I'm blaming all of you in the UK! ;) _Dave -- Original Message - Subject: RE: (313) Power outages Date: Fri, 15 Aug 2003 15:17:48 + From: Carissa Tintinalli [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org The outage covered the midwest and east coast, including Detroit, Lansing, northern Ohio, New York State, Connecticut, New Jersey, and all of Ontario except the far western part of the province. Going through a pile of MP3s and happened to notice that Gene Farris samples Miles Davis' On Green Dolphin Street. Nice that being an old jazz head occasionally pays off ;-)
