Pardon me, I meant the people are being *treat* like animals, not acting like
animals. I just feel really sorry for you lot, it seems like a real climate of
fear since Sept. 2001.

Well, from what I can see on tv here in Minneapolis - people just seem to be
trying to get home. Apparently, things are pretty orderly for the most part
in NYC. I'm sure there will be lots of stories of disorder that will come
later - especially if power isn't restored before nightfall. It's been hot
there (NYC) and people will get bored - but who knows. Stay calm, wait and
see.

There's not much reporting going on of other cities though - the Freep had
a blurb on it, not much more info yet as to the condition of the city.

It's strange to say the least that so many cities got knocked out at around
the same time, 4pm. I don't want to believe it, but my heart is not feeling

Hear hear! I heartily agree, although I will be checking the facts on this one,
it seems odd. The last one this bad was the same time of year, back in 1996.
Maybe it's the heat?
Was reading an interesting thing on GNN about a strategic vote for Dean in
2004...I dunno, it's not even my country!

>You have nothing to fear except fear itself (pay no attention to the man

Are you quoting the fromthewilderness.com advert?? Did you see it go out? And
if so, can you say anything about it's effect? Nothing like that would ever
happen in Britain, it's more restrained. I think Mike Ruppert is a real dude.

Cheers,

Andrew

Oh, yeah it is. F*ck Bush and his "Christian" Conservatism, Homeland
(Fatherland) Security, Karl Rove, etc. What depresses me is that there are
fewer and fewer journalists willing to give 'em a good fight because
they're all too scared of getting their access to stories taken away from
them. And then there's Christopher Hitchens ("The Long Short War" - what a
f*cking turncoat). Bunch of privileged twats more concerned with their
careers than with telling the truth that is right in front of them. The
Democrats haven't exactly been brilliant either - spent too many years
courting Big Business. I could go on..

I saw this guy wearing a t-shirt the other day that said "Vote For Anyone
Else In 2004"

Gotta love that

I'm sure this was a failure of the power grid system - but it does show
just how vulnerable the US can be. I've always been a proponent of living
off the grid system- solar, wind, wave power is much more reliant in the
long run.

You have nothing to fear except fear itself (pay no attention to the man
behind the curtain)

>Photek - all his stuff on Photek Productions and Science but

UFO must be one of the best dance tracks ever. eerie, cinematic,
and dark, but not in that irritating way that drrum and bass is
now, but more like an emotional darkness. and photek's beats are
just killer. he's a total inspiration to me. i remember reading in
like 1996 that he spend about 3 weeks on just the drums for each
track. wild.

>4-Hero - the earlier you go the better - check Cooking Up Your
Brain 12" Parallel Universe LP; their stuff as Tom and Jerry is
good too though difficult to find Mr Kirk's Nightmare

i dont know, i think 4 hero have been pretty consistantly the
bomb. they had no real down periods. the older hardcore stuff was
great, the tom and jerry stuff is some of the best, but their new
stuff though not exactly drum and bass related is also fabulous.
theyre heroes of mine for sure.

>Goldie/Metalheadz - Terminator is a massive tune - think it has
just been reissued; Inner City Life is great too and the Timeless
LP. Goldie went down hill in a big way after that...

i have to disagree with this as well. while his second LP wasnt
anywhere near as good as timeless, any track or rmx by Rufige Cru
is pretty much essential. the liquid fingers rmx is totally larry
heard making a jungle tune, that "beachdrifta" track has one of
the best string lines ever, totally detroit styled emotional dance
music. and "the shadow" which he did in 97 with rob playford is
another dark cinematic emotional masterpiece. i also cant say
enough about goldie. he is THE MAN.

>Shy FX - most stuff on Ebony and SOUR is brilliant - Original
Nuttah with UK Apachi has the maddest fast rapping on it you ever
heard - was recently reissued; Gangsta Kid probably the next one
I'd pick out as a recommendation (also Gangsta Kid II!). Also
check Bambaataa, Cry (T-Power remix)

id definitely say that shy has no 313 relevance, but he's still
really good. he's churned out enough anthems without putting out
much if any filler material. its crazy.

>Omni Trio - Renegade Snares is their big tune - just reissued but
don't think it has the original mix on it...

the high contrast mix is very good though. it maintains so much of
the original that its impossible to not like it. omni trio for me
is the most consistantly detroit drum and bass artist.

>Alex Reece - Pulp Friction - classic tune, gets used quite a lot
on TV these days for some reason! Alex remixed Model 500 tune on
R&S though I think it was the Frank de Wulf mix I preferred; also
his remix of Tricky's Brand New Your Retro...

alex reese is another very techno influenced cat. some of the
fallen angels stuff from 99-00 was like techno with a fast beat.

>Jonny L - Piper Grooverider remix

jonny l's recent stuff is actually structured just like a harder
more loop based techno track. lots of loops and no breakdowns, the
basslines even sound like some harder euro techno. good stuff
though, very funky.

>Prizna - Fire - this one got reissued a while back and is a on
the same lines as Original Nuttah

except much much much much better. "fire" and "the arsonist" are 2
of the best ragga tunes ever, ive never seen them get played
without being rewound.

>Origin Unknown - Valley of the Shadows - just reissued - it tends
to appear for a couple of weeks each year and then vanish;
sometimes known as Long Dark Tunnel...

someone mentioned pfm's "cruising detroit" on the "storm from the
east" comp. thats the tune. both storm from the east comps are
good. i dare anyone who doesnt like jungle to listen to photek's
rmx of the ez rollers' "believe" (on SFTE 1) and try to say that
jungle isnt a beautiful emotional expressive form of dance music.

can't resist making mention of this since its really a favorite of mine that I
doubt any of y'all have ever heard-
but in the rare niche of Detroit-made D&B, this is
actually a pretty dope track with *very* detroit strings.

DJ Shortstop "Its Murder" on a Twilight/Databass release.

RE: (313) ID required, plus a little London spam

2003-08-15 Thread Odeluga, Ken
I saw this yesterday and listened to it too. It's a tool but it's a not too
average one. Side A is just really various ways of doing a breakbeat for
about 7 mins with really not much else going on. It's the least impressive
track. Side B uses a highly processed string sample and not much else, but
it does create a real atmosphere. I listened all the way through and there
is no variation, hence my assignment of it as a tool. It could be useful for
some folks who like to drop things in only as an interval between another
mix, before the other track is out - or as a very long accompaniment to
something with more definition or whatever.

I doubt it's anyone well-known trying to create a stir - although ok, it
really isn't anything that special. I didn't buy it.

I did buy the Pavel Kostuik (sp?) 'mini-LP' though - buy on sight. Also
Mute, 'Direct Cuts' EP on Running Back. Now *that* is a real Detroit groove,
albeit via Frankfurt am Main!

I've always thought that PFM's 'Western' was as techno as BFC's 'Western',

That's not supposed to impact until Saturday, but even then, I doubt it
could affect a power grid - or I sincerely hope not anyway.

Maybe he did. I know Jonny L *certainly* did have a track called 'Detroit'

Find it on the 'Sawtooth' LP, (XL, '98). It really sticks out as it's not
d'nb' on a d'n'b LP. It's sort of breaking electro with a clear Detroity
phrase throughout and a big bassline. I remember some people at the time
liked it but put it aside as it's hard to mix 'cause the intro has a
diminishing time signature - losing a quarter beat each bar - or something
like that. Nice track overall though.

Everyone come to Public Life Saturday b/c it's my birfday and the tunes will
be nice!

Kev Beadle is playing @ the Bridge & Tunnel this Friday 15th. Last weekend
it's open - ever.

For whoever was asking about the 22nd, Chicken Lips are playing @ Plastic
People, and there's this. Ramar is good. I think the other blokes are too,
but haven't heard 'em properly.

VOICES::Soundsytem return to host the the MAIN ROOM (at a 500-800 capacity
venue somewhere in Hoxton) on *FRIDAY 22nd AUGUST* as part of the Hoxton
Pimps Bank Holiday / Carnival Special 3-day party.

...from 11pm Friday, way into Saturday morning...
VOICES:: DJ's ALEX (Attica Blues Allstars), CEDRIC WOO, RAMAR (Materielle)
with live percussion by BONGOMANIAC

search-deep-party-hard music via Deep House, Detroit Techno, Italo /
Electro, Dub, Disco, Afro/Funk/Fusion, Warehouse Classics...

we will be seeking to lift the roof off the room - time to EXPRESS!!! - at
the last event the main room was at 3/4 capacity when we had to finish at
6am when we were just getting warmed up . we are expecting this forthcoming
event to run until 8 or 10am.

you heard it before because we say it often - show your faces, move your
feet, lift your Voices!

And then there's all that other stuff, like Hood + Ralph Lawson @ Fabric and
Derrick Carter, Luke Solomon + Rob Mello @ The End this Saturday if you're
still going post-Public Life, then Mills/Plaid/Vadim @ Lost next Sunday,
versus Hawtin + Magda @ The End, but if you don't come to Bootytronics @
Public Life first, you'll miss out on all the proper [313] business. ;)

fxck power outages.

of course I live 2 hours from detroit now, and left my house at 3pm so I
could drink some beers and bbq before heading over to see traxx, twonz, and
theo parrish.

you all know that at around 4:15pm, the power went out and Im assuming
(safely I imagine) that the event didn't go down, unless it was featuring
lots of candles and generators.

so I ended up trapped in ann arbor, unable to get money from the bank, no
food, no ac, and my friends place is the top of a 3 story house. it was 85
degrees in his house when I left to take my chances with i-75 at 4am this
morning. at least my car has tunes and ac :P

I hope you're all faring well, and that you can find some peace despite the
glaring technology void left by the power outage. I'm really sad that the
best event in the last couple months just happened to fall on the night of
the worst outage in history.

RE: (313) Power outages

2003-08-15 Thread Carissa Tintinalli
The outage covered the midwest and east coast, including Detroit, Lansing,
northern Ohio, New York State, Connecticut, New Jersey, and all of Ontario
except the far western part of the province.

Windsor (in Canada, just across the river from Detroit) came back on slowly
starting around midnight, but I think only because Canadian energy sort of
detached itself from the U.S. power grid to get us up faster. But we've been
going on and off sporadically all morning again, so who knows if we'll stay
up.

Joe/r3dshift: Hopefully power will be back in downtown Detroit by tomorrow
night (it's back in Corktown now) because the lineup you missed (Traxx,
Deecoy, Hieroglyphic Being, no Theo though) is scheduled to play at
Untitled.

and both are toons from hell (or highwater). ;)

(313) [OT]RE: (313) Power outages

2003-08-15 Thread James Hurlbut

On topic track name : "Energy Flash" - Beltram

Really it has to do with the deregulation of the energy industry that went
on in this country around 1998. The US, with its faith in the market,
decided it would be good to treat essential human services as commodities
to be bought and sold for profit, making the electricity system as volatile
as the stock market. In fact the energy wholesalers (people like Enron and
Global Crossing, you know those companies that stole billions from
taxpayers and employees and got a slap on the wrist?) are at an incentive
to keep the system dangerously low in reserves, because they are paid more
for providing reserve energy (that is energy below 18% of the capacity of
the system) than they are for providing energy above the 18% checkmark.
This means that after 1998 the local energy market in NY state was
providing only around 10% of the capacity of the system, the rest was
distributed from out of state investors or wholesalers, most of it from
Canada who makes a lot of income by providing power to the US. This is what
happened here in California a year and a half ago when Enron was busy
shuttling power in and out of California getting paid for the energy each
time it entered the state and other dirty tricks. Of course the Bush
administration will use this as an excuse to build more power plants and
rush the permitting process, sidelining any weak environmental standards
and community issues still in place. Welcome to neocon xtreme capitalism,
where even terrorist threats get sold on the market!

Oops, back to techno...

Didn't Lemon D also do a track titled simply "Detroit" ? or maybe I
am

confusing it with this Jazz Juice thing sorry don't own either so
I can't verify, but I remember hearing it and really hearing the

Maybe he did. I know Jonny L *certainly* did have a track called

yep that's the one, sorry mixed up my "First Name + Initial" DnB

OK, you know that there's going to be DJs throwing down some tunes about

I'll start

Robert Owens - "Twilight for Some"
Jeff Mills - "Twilight Scenario"
Moonchildren - "And Then There was Darkness"
Octave One - "Through Darkness"
War - "Slipping in to Darkness" - maybe use the Armand Van Helden mix

vocals of course score double points

"Worst outage in history"? Ah, someone that didn't live through the
Great Blackout of November 1965, I see :-)

Post of the Year. Succinct and oh-so-true. It's unbelievable how evil
this stuff truly is. California is the laughing stock of the world -
we're now having a circus erm ... I mean, a "recall election" in part
because Governor Gray Davis is such a panzy that he allowed us to get
caught up in buying electricity contracts (after Enron scr*wed us) for
4 times the going rate because our backs were to the wall. Whee!

Hi everyone.

I haven't been reading this thread and the power here is still inconsistent (on

seen, and according to my parents nothing like they've seen since the '67 riots.

I apologize if this ground has been covered previously in the thread, but I
hope those of you without power in Detroit (or with minimal power) are keeping
an eye out for your neighbor, especially the elderly ones. I know it's a very
boy scout thing to say, but in situations like these I think it's most
appropriate. I'm going to sound really preachy, but take two minutes out of
your boredom or away from that battery powered laptop and check to see if
they're doing okay.

Now I'm going to go back to my porch and strum a few songs on the ol' guitar.

RE: (313) The lights go on Sunday

2003-08-15 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

>From CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/08/15/blackout.detroit/index.html

Power may not be restored to all of Detroit Edison's 2.1 million customers
until Sunday as the area copes with the massive power outage that hit the
northeastern United States, officials said.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said efforts were underway to restore power
to residents in Detroit, Lansing and Ann Arbor. She said Detroit Edison
told her they can't say when all power will be fully restored, but that it
might take until Sunday.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport was closed for up to six hours Thursday and
several flights canceled before opening again for air traffic early Friday,
according to Liz Boyd, the governor's press secretary.

The power outage also affected water supplies because water in the state is
distributed by electric pumps, said Mary Dettloff, Granholm's deputy press
secretary.

Some areas of Saginaw and Bay City were also suffering from power outages,
she said. Meanwhile, the governor has ordered her staff to move to the
state's emergency operations center in Lansing.

All personnel was called in to duty Thursday night by Detroit's police
chief, said Dettloff. A police spokeswoman said the city of Detroit
remained calm and peaceful Friday morning.

Just south of Detroit in Melvindale, a two-alarm fire broke out shortly
after midnight at the Marathon Oil Refinery, but was under control by
Friday morning, according to the Detroit Fire Department.

The Michigan State Police has closed both northbound and southbound lanes
of Interstate 75, which runs by the refinery property, a state police
spokesman said Friday morning.

For info on the background of the power outage, try this link:
http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=10&ItemID=4051

As I suspected, this seems to be a direct result of the push for deregulation
of the electrical industry, an idea which apparently was first pushed in the UK
under Thatcher. So now I'm blaming all of you in the UK! ;)

But we've been
going on and off sporadically all morning again, so who knows if we'll stay
up.

Joe/r3dshift: Hopefully power will be back in downtown Detroit by tomorrow
night (it's back in Corktown now) because the lineup you missed (Traxx,
Deecoy, Hieroglyphic Being, no Theo though) is scheduled to play at
Untitled.

(313) Gene Farris "The Grail" & Miles Davis

2003-08-15 Thread Kent williams
Going through a pile of MP3s and happened to notice that Gene Farris
samples Miles Davis' "On Green Dolphin Street." Nice that being an old
jazz head occasionally pays off ;-)

(313) Saturday at Untitled: Traxx and the Dirty Criminals.

2003-08-15 Thread Sam Valenti IV

Just a note that Saturday Night (power permitting), Untitled will host
Chicago's Dirty Criminals, led by the one and only Traxx.

Performing live is Hieroglyphic Being, aka Jamal Moss, who has been
self-releasing records with the blessing of legends like Steve Poindexter
and Adonis for a while and whose debut for our Spectral Sound label,
Machines for Lovers, will be out soon.

Don't miss the jacking box music as the torch-bearers of the Chicago sound
come through Detroit.
