(313) What

2003-09-12 Thread Phonopsia
Surgeon played a fantastic set tonight at Plastic People. Absurdly loud, but
all over the electronic music spectrum, including some weird Surgeonized
P-Funk track (I think), The Stone Roses 'Fools Gold', two Nitzer Ebb tracks,
one of which was 'Join in the Chant', the Carl Craig's Drums Suck remix of
Dave Angel's 'Take Off' (or is it 'Airborne'???), some crazy nearly-gabber
Aphex Twin, D.H.S.'s 'The House of God', New Order's 'Blue Monday' (the
first time I've actually enjoyed this out in a club in years), Tres
Demented, Kraftwerk's 'Home Computer' (never getting to the vocal), teased
us with bits of At Les flute that never culminated in the song itself, loads
of electro and IDMish electro, some acidic techno, a lot of Surgeonized
edits of tracks that I can't remember, culminating in some weird
gabber/noisecore thing leading into something I can't remember and then a UR
track that has huge strings that reminds me of the beginning of Laurent
Garnier's 'Dance to the Music'. There were even a couple of housey moments
in there. He mixed fast and long throughout, was as tight as you'd expect
from Surgeon, with a few tempo changes, sacrificing none of his precision or
coherence to the breadth of this set. Surprisingly he played very few of his
own tracks that I could spot, which is a complete turn-around from when I
saw him in New York in 2001. Somehow he fit all of this into two hours.

A couple of times in the set Regis would get on the microphone and scream
like a profane madman. One bit ended with 'learn your lesson'. Although I
didn't catch it, I'm told he was also whispering things about 'your
daughter' softly in the background. Also, the Werk guys who threw the party
(and the Ghostly party last month) all had nice PA's to warm things up. The
only downside is that there were times (particularly during the gabber and
noise bed bit at the end) when the (easily abusable) sound was utterly
damaging, and throughout most of the night it was a bit too loud, even if it
was still clear. If you haven't seen him in the last year, run don't walk
because he has absolutely taken his sets to a whole new level, as evidenced
by this set and his possibly even better set at ATP this Spring. The man is
really pushing boundaries. He, not Hawtin, is the poster boy for Final
Scratch, and what it can empower you to do. Y'all in the Pool are in for a
treat tomorrow!

Was this the party in the high school gym with Derrick May, Derrick Carter
and John Acquaviva, where the main room DJs were on decks at the top of some
bleachers? If so, I must agree. Trainwrecks galore from Ishii! The sound in
there was ass, so who knows if that had anything to do with it. Think it was
early '98 if memory timelines of ex-girlfriends can be trusted. ;) Derrick
Carter was very very good that night - first time I saw him. Derrick May
played mostly tracks from the Mayday mix in a very similar order. Good, but
 a bit deflating.

Detroit techno DJ and producer Jeff Mills is to release a CD/DVD mix album
in October this year [ed: January 2004], called 'The Exhibitionist'.
The CD version of the release will feature extracts from his current set,
as well as unreleased material, whilst the DVD version will include live

If anyone has used either of these and has any advice before I go and check

OKIve got a unwanted gift CD from HMV, its worth £16.99. I went last night
on my way home and try to get a refund on it only to be told that I cant have
one (ill miss out the rest of the conversation, but I wasn't
happy) All I can do is do a swap for another CD. So somewhat irate I looked
around but couldn't find anything in the 10 mins I had before they shut.

Planning on going again later...any recommendations for me that I can pick from
the somewhat non specailist HMV

Ps no looped bangers please :)

On heavy rotation atm are the Emoticon Sampler, The Irma Soul in Motion comp
and anything on Archive. So Deep Techno.

Thanks In Advance.

2003-09-12 Thread Tom Churchill
Personally I'd go for the Allen Heath any day - I'm planning to buy one
myself next month. The build and sound quality is much better than the
Pioneer, and the Pioneer effects get 'gimmicky' and overused quite quickly.

I still quite like using a Pioneer in a club situation where hi-fi sound
quality isn't the top priority, and it's easy to use, but the AH just
sounds better - and for home use that's much more important...

Cheers,

Tom

Sorry for the off topic post, but I was wondering if anyone had any opinions
on these two mixers. I'm undecided whether to go for Pioneer DJM 500 with
built in FX, or the Allen Heath Xone:32 which I've heard is more durable
and has a much better sound.
If anyone has used either of these and has any advice before I go and check
them out, it would be appreciated.
 Please reply off list.

I already have people wanting to put there name on a list .:)

I love it,,BUT

actually what I would like to do, Is to send a very informative e-mail
including what the RIAA is doing and their Justification and Why as
consumers we shouldn't alow it. And then set a date where we would stop
purchasing c.d.s. We then can either send the e-mail to all of our friends
and/or start small boycotts within our individual cities. Also we will send
a copy to the RIAA with our intentions spelled out.

I will defintetly start it here in Charlotte N.C. and to people I know
through e-mail.

If you feel that the RIAA is justified, then that's o.k. No one forces a
boycott. But I just believe if that 30% c.d.sales drops to 40% or even 50%
things will change.

Now I heard the riaa was going to stop it anyway because of the
counter-suit. But I can't find where that is actually a fact. CNN and I
think Mixmag reported it. But the head of the RIAA has not made an official
announcement saying the same thing.

I really think the buying public should form a c.d. boycott until this
stuff stops. If they think a thirty percent drop is bad what if just
10% of the people we contacted through e-mail stopped buying c.d.'s?
That's a lot of people. And the sales would drop even more. I hate for
the artist to be in the middle of this, but then maybe more of them
 would step up also.

I would love to try to get this started or join a boycott that may
have already started. I would need all the information,,i.e.
facts,,rules and everything to send to people so they can make an
intelkligent decision themselves. Does anyone know of where I can get
 the information behind the lawsuits?

$2000 for a thousand songs she allegedly shared through her computer?
 that's $2 per song!!!

Do you suppose that the RIAA is looking at each song and each artist
that she downloaded and giving them their fair amount? As if she had
bought a CD from each of them - and then does that affect their chart
 position?

I really doubt they are distributing the money to the artists
 - many of whom seem to be rather silent on the issue lately (that I've
noticed). Anyone see/hear/read artists speaking out against what the
 RIAA is doing?

I think their lawyers could drop $2000 at dinner after the pre-trial
hearing (business expense - it's a meeting to figure out the game
 plan, honest!).

my only complaint about the Xzone is it physical set up.
i have used one twice and the were the channel gains are at is dumb imo they
are on the back face plate. there were also no kills, which for sucked, i was
playing electro both times and really wanted kills.
but for not having the scratch mixer features the volume curves on the
channels was like a scratch mixer.
but having saying this once i got used to the mixer i know i would love it.

my problem with the djm 500 or 600 i they are cheaply built. they dont sound
all that bad. they get fuzzy in the high end, i suspect cheap pre-amps. but if
you sre going to spend that much cash you should get something that will last.

i bought a stanton sk-2f it's very clean sounding straight forward 2 ch, 3 band
ch eq's, assingable curve on the cross-fade and ch faders. balanced and rca
outs.
i've never had a problem with mine, but i had a friend who had problems with
his. i think he beat it to hell though, he loaned it to everyone on earth and
was/is a fader masher. i won't let him use mine. so i sent two hundred
dollars and it is very clean sounding, cleaner then a dmj 500, if it breaks it
will meet the trash and i will get a new one.

In my opinion Behringer mixers aren't that great. I have no experience with
the dj mixers but I do have a MX2642A Eurorack for my studio set up and
after only 2 months of use the eq's got noisy. I have had it for 2.5 years
now and it appears that the main and bus outputs are going out But for
the price I paid I cant complain too much. (I probably got what I paid for,
its not a mackie D8b or anything)

But...

Im wondering why no one has mentioned the Tascam X-9 DJ mixer... Looks like
a DJM KILLER to me!

http://www.tascam.com/products/product_information.php?product_id=3

too expensive for me right now but I have been drooling over this thing for

well the funny part about is that there is no full proof of ' black
material'
so if there is no 'black material' exists than there would be no black
holes, if i'm correct
(I would like to take a different point of view of a black hole btw instead
of looking at it from earth)

ah whatever
if they exist and hum bass
well that's cool
I would love if they would humm like the red planets we know ;)

Black hole hums deepest note ever detected

Wednesday, September 10, 2003 Posted: 1:51 PM EDT (1751 GMT)

WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (Reuters) -- Big black holes sing bass. One
particularly
monstrous black hole has probably been humming B flat for billions of
years, but at a pitch no human could hear, let alone sing, astronomers
said
 this week.

The intensity of the sound is comparable to human speech, said Andrew
Fabian of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge, England. But the pitch
of the sound is about 57 octaves below middle C, roughly the middle of a
 standard piano keyboard.

This is far, far deeper than humans can hear, the researchers said, and
they believe it is the deepest note ever detected in the universe.

The sound waves are emanating from the Perseus Cluster, a giant clump of
 galaxies some 250 million light-years from Earth. A light-year is about 6
trillion miles (10 trillion km), the distance light travels in a year.

Fabian and his colleagues used NASA's orbiting Chandra X-Ray Observatory
to
investigate X-rays coming from the cluster's heart.

Researchers presumed that a supermassive black hole, with perhaps 2.5
billion times the mass of our sun, lay there, and the activity around the
 center bolstered this assumption.

Black holes are powerful matter-sucking drains in space, and astronomers
believe most galaxies, including our own Milky Way, may contain black
holes
 at their centers.

Black holes have not been directly observed, because their gravitational
pull is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape it.

 Making waves

So researchers have concentrated on what happens around the edges of black
holes, just before matter is pulled in.

When scientists trained the Chandra observatory on the center of Perseus
last year, they saw concentric ripples in the cosmic gas that fills the
space between the galaxies in the cluster.

We're dealing with enormous scales here, Fabian said in a telephone
interview. The size of these ripples is 30,000 light-years.

Fabian said the ripples were caused by the rhythmic squeezing and heating
of the cosmic gas by the intense gravitational pressure of the jumble of
galaxies packed together in the cluster.

As the black hole pulls material in, he said, it also creates jets of
material shooting out above and below it, and it is these powerful jets
that create the pressure that creates the sound waves.

To scientists, he said, pressure ripples equate to sound waves. By
calculating how far apart the ripples were, and how fast sound might
travel
there, the team of researchers determined the musical note of the sound.

Fabian said the notion of singing black holes might well be extrapolated
to
other galaxies, but not necessarily to the Milky Way.

Chandra has looked at X-ray emissions from the Milky Way's center, and
astronomers believe there is a black hole there, but because it is a
young,
rambunctious galaxy with lots of activity at its heart, this may interfere
with any note our black hole might sing, Fabian said.

2003-09-12 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

Here's their bio:

A dynamic duo, bound by a mutual love of badass beats, Jean Jacques Perry,
melodic loopiness andJohn Carpenter - this is 7-Hurtz. They're probably
best known for their anthemic club tracks Beatbox and Stokers Motor
which tore up dancefloors on release in 2000. Killer riffs, electro
stylings and sinister beats have made them classics of the Electro genre.
It's not surprising that 7-Hurtz's work is of such quality when you take a
peep at the pair's artistic pedigrees - Ben Cowan was a dancer with
contemporary dance outfits such as Ricochet and Bedlam, with whom he had
travelled the European festival circuit. In addition to this, he was also a
member of the LoWilliams Band, which you may not have heard of, but ended
up supporting George Clinton at the Phoenix Festival.
The LoWilliams Band were signed to a small indie label, Orange Egg. The
boss was a dapper young-man-about-town, Brand New heavies founder Lascelles
Gordon. When not administering his fledgling label, Gordon kept himself
busy as a session musician for the likes of The Sandals, Beth Orton and the
notorious Campag Velocet. His club night Helter Stupid was the
destination of choice for Londoners seeking offal sewage for the ears.
Amazingly, he managed to squeeze in a solo music career into this hectic
lifestyle, a project called Rock Oil. It was for the aforementioned
project that Lascelles requested Ben's help with a couple of tracks. The
experiment proved successful - and before long, our two chums were soon
making music, experimenting with a flood of ideas, theories and notions
which came together to create the unique sound of 7-Hurtz.
When the pair initialised the collaboration, they had some definite ideas
on what they were trying to achieve, as Ben explains.
We were interested in doing electronic music that involved
improvisation,found
sound, semi-generative, visually stimulated work that moved away from the
music we had been doing. We also wanted to make the music in a way that
meant the processes of writing, playing and recording converged so that we
could do it ourselves
A tape made its way to a graphic designer Lascelles knew. The designer had
recently set up Output and was enthused enough by the pairs' ideas to
release Beatbox. Nice one, Trevor!
Audiophiliac, a dark propulsive journey through funk/electro/hip hop and
303/808 cultures, received unanimous critical acclaim, with tracks such as
Beatbox and Stokers Motor landing like grenades on the listening
public. The bands myriad influences - the retro-futuristic sounds, the John
Carpenter Assault On Precinct 13 obsessions and Hashim-style bleakness
all contributed to a sound that revitalized and redefined the Electro
scene.
7-Hurtz enthusiastically set to work on the follow up, due out soon.
Meanwhile, Lascelles is continuing his session work, cameos with old
muckers like Velocet and Beth Orton. He also runs a monthly night at Hoxton
hotspot Herbal, unambiguously named Warm Leatherette. Meanwhile, Ben's
not staying in watching Brookside. He's just completed a Masters degree, is
looking forward to doing 7-Hurtz live, and is plotting
generative/heuristic performances and projects. Go, boy! Whatever happens
next, you can bet your granny 7-Hurtz will take you on a f*cked-up twisted
trip to the heart of the beat...and beyond

Micheal, that is by far the best thing I've learned in a long time! What a
fascinating proposition!

Of course, these phenomena can't be in isolation, perhaps a deeper
investigation of this can lead to mapping out the different frequencies that
are available at different points in space, to eventually provide a kind of
musical map of the universe! There's so many interesting angles from this,
is this kind of thing not the essence of techno? Can't explain why, just
feels like it.

The music of the spheres

Andrew

PS. RAW, I don't recall black holes being anything to do with 'black
material', fwiw you could be referring to 'dark matter', but that's a
different phenomena to this, albeit related.

I use the gains for EVERY mixthat's pretty often.

We do all covet your mixer though Pete;-)

Call me a weirdo, but I like the gains back there. Yes, it's weird at first,
but with the fine amount of adjustment needed on gains, and the limited use
they get in the mix (I mostly tune the gains in cue), it frees up needed
space on the main console to get your grubby fingers between the EQs. If I
have any criticism of the Xones, it's that there still isn't enough space
between the EQ knobs to really get in there, but I'll make that sacrifice
for the nice long volume faders. I think those faders are one of the best
things about it. So smooth, clear and acurate. I've used the Pioneer
probably as much if not more than I've used my AH, especially @ gigs, but I
much prefer the AH 32 after living with it for 6 months. As everyone else
has said, its sound, feel and tank-ness far outweigh any additional features
other mixers provide. When shopping in March, I also considered the Red
Sound Infader (with 3 band cross faders that are super fun), but apparently
their durability is really questionable. I also had my eye on the Tascam X-9
for ages, because the features are wicked and it feels plenty solid, but
ultimately I don't need all that crap. Get the Xone. It will treat you well.
