RE: (313) Assault on Precinct 13
I've got that--it's called 'club classics' on xyz records and came out 2001. the cat # is cc0006. it's not a bootleg. it's part of their re-release series, as far as i can tell. it has four tracks and is one of my favorite records. i've been looking for a second copy without much luck. it seems to be out of print again at xyz. tracklsting is: John Carpenter The End Hypnosis End Title Blade Runner Laserdance Humanoid Invasion (Original Mix) Laserdance Powerrun james Sean Creen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org wave.comcc: (bcc: James Bucknell/ARD/AU/ReadersDigest) Subject: RE: (313) Assault on Precinct 13 18/12/03 08:41 AM but anyway, if anyone knows where i might get that 80s mix, I'm listening.. You mean the version with the added scratches, etc? I picked it up a few years ago on a label called Club Classics - never heard of the label before or since, so I suspect its a bootleg. Its also got the Theme from Bladerunner on it.

I started that thread. It's still my album of the year. ;) I think there was some great RB/hip-hop music this year, like Common (OK, we got the release a couple of months late), NERD and I loved Martina Topley Bird's Quixotic, Les Nubians, and so on. I also loved Moodymann and Andres. To me it's all part of a wider spectrum. dunno if its been discussed on the list yet but outkast's 'hey ya' is definitely one top 10 mainstream chart hit I really enjoy hearing on the radio. how come no stores seem to sell 12s of it though? While I like 'Hey Ya', I think it's the 7th best track (at best) on 'The Love Below'. It's probably gonna be my #1 for 2003. Buy it! And I have to thank everyone who spoke up about this album early, because I probably never would've given it a fair shake otherwise. It's got some properly techno moments throughout, wicked instrumentation/orchestration, great lyrics, the works. My favorites are 'She Lives in my Lap', 'Love in War', 'Roses', 'Prototype', 'Vibrate', 'A Life in the Day..' Sh*t, the whole damn thing is excellent. I held off on commenting until I had a chance to properly ingest it and I can definitely say that it improves as you get to know it. I am thoroughly impressed. Not dying, but changing. I know I've said it before but the impact of file sharing has been profound - added to the economic uncertainty. You can talk to any label boss, from Simon Dunmore (Defected/Stealth) to Luke Solomon (Classic) to Meat Katie (and breaks are big and all that) and you'll get that view. People just have different views on how to go from here, what is the solution? I would say the majors have lost 2/3 of their staff - Universal Music shed something like 75 percent in anticipation of losses - and there will be more downsizing. OK, so many peepz here could care less about majors but the smaller labels are hurting too. Classic got burnt big time when their distributor went under! I think there is a perception that house music was dull in 2003 with the likes of Basement Jaxx saying as such in interviews but there was plenty of great underground stuff, as we know, but not great sales. DJ Sneak says he had trouble finding a UK label deal for his album 'cause labels were scared - and he's had that huge Fix That Sink hit so he would be a viable prospect, you'd imagine. The media backed the rock revival thing - on the basis of everyone liking Coldplay, I don't know - but it's more that the market has diversified and actually I think it's become easier for kids to like rock and dance and urban, there's more hybridisation happening, too. In Australia there have been several sell-out tours and I reckon people are saving money on records by downloading and using it to attend live shows. -- Original Message -- From: Odeluga, Ken [EMAIL PROTECTED] Pleased to see that it's clearly going to be popular (judging from the responses I got and the number of places which are going to stock it - around the world). Is this *really* a dying business?! i know from talking to a couple detroit house cats that their records are all pressed at one place and that theres pretty much a long line to get stuff pressed up. stuff seems to be selling out pretty quick too. so who knows. I think there's mixed indicators. While you have the death of some major distributors this year, I read an article in the Metro the other day (granted, not the most reliable source) that vinyl sales have increased in 2003 (I think in the UK) for the first time in however many years. The article atributed it to a renewed interest in guitar-based music in teenagers, which I thought was a pretty strange explanation! More than anything, I think there's been a lot of hurt in techno, and a lot of health in house, broken beat (Goya *must* be doing great), downtempo stuff and underground hip hip. This doesn't *necessarilly* say anything about the quality of the releases, of course. I know some of the best techno labels seem to be fighting an uphill battle to move records, but I think that's probably a result of lots of people who have been into techno losing interest in shopping for it as their tastes generally diverge into other things. I know I stopped looking for a while, and certainly stopped buying, but as the momentum has been picking back up in techno, so has my purchasing. I'm under the impression that it came out promo-only as a double A side with I Like The Way You Move, both as album cuts, ie no remixes or anything. I'm a huge fan of Outkast's music but I wish they would talk about women and sex in a more positive way. I just can't stand hearing men use the word bitch and continue to be apalled by how many men in hip hop and r n b continue to talk about lesbians in a negative way ie either i'm so much of a man lesbians want me too and/or she doesn't want me so she must be a lesbian. i still think much can be learned from prince, who talked about women and sex very very often, but always positively. Prince seemed to celebrate sexuality for the sake of it, whereas for Outkast and many hip hop and r n b acts, sexuality is talked about as a power issue of men having power over women, which I find distasteful. (313) Forgotten Detroit Classics
Morning 313 Peepz, Right, it's Friday, one week till x-mas and i'm at work when i'd rather be at home listening to some nice warm, emotive techno music. If I can't be listening to it i'd want to talk about it instead. So Whenever I see lists of Detroit classics it's always the obvious tunes which are included; hi-tech jazz, strings of life, desire etc. But what about those not so well known gems, the ones that are loved and forgotten or the ones 'that got away' ? I was getting ready for work this morning and I got a track in my head which wouldn't go away. Very sexy track, very deep, quite unique at the time (I could never mix it with anything as it sounded so unlike anything else I had) - bugged me for a few minutes then I remembered it. Infiniti - Higher (Tresor) - great track, but never got the recognition it deserved for some reason. Anybody else ? Chris. - Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/

I think a few big artists have LP's ready and are struggling to find the advances they're looking for. Sometimes people ask for unrealistic amounts. Mind you I have no idea about this so I'm not saying Sneak was doing that. Re: (313) dying business? [was: RE: Nu Era on Twisted Funk]
I think Sneak completed the album before shopping it to labels, he just wanted a distribution deal, so I don't think he could have expected an advance. He got distribution in Australia with Ministry of Sound Australia and I doubt they would have offered anything astronomical as we have a small market. He was more like the UK market is in complete disarray. I am curious to hear it, he says it's not straight 4/4, more ol' skool funk album. -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) dying business? I'd like to offer not individual tunes but instead some labels that, while they were/are small, offered music that just required a bit of a real listen to find the sparkle. Most of these don't fetch big money on eBay nor do they sell well if at all when they do - and you can usually find them in the used bins. I recommend a listen. Has anyone seen or know of any studies of who actually buys the underground stuff,,meaning the demographic The reason I ask is because locally I've seen a decline in NON d.j.'s buying records. If that's true elsewhere can the underground industry survive with just d.j. purchases? Either way I think it will be very important to find actually WHO buys our stuff! PS - *please* excuse my excessive blathering on the mic early on, I just came from a holiday party where I obviously was [ahem] a little over-served and more chatty than usual ;P ugh 9:30 - 10:15pmMatt MacQueen Rhythm Sound - Aground (Rhythm Sound) The Connection Machine - Blue Genes Copyshop - Painless (DownLow) Plej - Evum - The Sky EP Series (Exceptional) Charles Webster - I'm Falling - Pepe Bradock's Electric Frog Remix - Remixed on the 24th of July (Peacefrog) $tinkworx - Saliva - Los Gatos - Los Gatos Lloros (Delsin) East Island vs. The Moderator - B1 (DownLow) Beat Smugglers - In The Park (Antenna) John Arnold - Broken - Neighborhood Science (Ubiquity) Domu Volcov - Nutsuki - Last of the Great Apes (Residual) A Certain Ratio - Starlight (Fila Brazilia Mix) (23 Records) Cybotron - Cosmic Cars (Detroit Style Mix) (Fantasy) Carl Craig - Tres Demented (Demented Drums Version) (Planet E) D. RE: (313) Re: hey ya?
Sorry to bust you open on this thread, but last time I listened to the words of hey ya it was all about waiting for the right girl. My wife happens to think that is the sweetest song on the album just because of what it is about. She can look past the whole bitch thing, and I think most people can. If you don't like it, you don't have to listen to it. Just choose what ever is the lesser of 2 evils. I chose to continue to listen to Outkast. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, December 19, 2003 6:22 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Re: hey ya? Speaking of NERD, Pharrell seems to talk about women and sex positively. my CDN .02. Andrew Duke
RE: Fw: (313) Frictional 01
shouldn't a remix of Nature of the Beast come out 4 or 5 years ago? did you find a white lable, or just an internet clip. I still need to hear this. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, December 17, 2003 6:34 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: Fw: (313) Frictional 01 Frictional 01 is superb! And rare! Get it fast Speaking of Shake... I heard his remix he made for Mike Grant. He remixed nature of the beast and it's wicked. Very phunked up drumwork and nice synthwork It will be released on End to End in the beginning of 2004 I think greetz, Arne Matt Chester [EMAIL PROTECTED] schrieb: 'Waiting for Russell' would have to be my favourite choice, if forced to make one. I notice that the frictional things have shot up in price lately, it seems they're becoming 'collectable' these days. there's a discog. here - http://www.twoplayer.co.uk/shake/ I was gonna say my faves are but, looking at the discography, they're pretty much all winners, hard to choose a best of list! another hot detroit label. alex _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. (313) OT Field Recordings
Hey all - happy myriad holidays! Looking for field recordings - either unaltered or manipulated in very unobtrusive or obvious ways. I found the website of the Quiet American and he does some interesting compositions - isn't the Touch label heavy on manipulated field recording artists? MEK

RE: (313) record stores in s.f. (o.t.?)
prepare to drop some $$$. three not to miss: amoeba: one of the biggest independent record stores anywhere. strong selection of most genres including one of the best jazz sections i've ever seen. electronic music-wise, it's great for picking up used cd compilations, etc. they've also got some good record buyers, but no listening stations, so it's a good place to pick up stuff you know you want. they've got a solid nu jazz/brokenbeat section and the used electronic bin is often full of gems. tweekin: house, house and more house. if you dig in the imports bins, you can find a lot of the european stuff mentioned on (313). (which they classify as either tech house or deep house, depending. as far as they're concerned, brokenbeat is also deep house.) also good selection of domestic house by label, lots of kdj represses, etc. open mind: its almost against the rules to mention this place on a mailing list, but i know john john has more records than he knows what to do with, so what the hey... they've got an enormous stock of used 12s courtesty of the fact that every sf dj needs to pay rent. if you're willing spend some time, you're guaranteed to find some cool stuff. and then there's also bpm, zen city and soundworks which all have decent selections, but tend to stock mostly straight ahead house styles and nothing that you can't get at tweekin (except maybe breaks, hi-nrg, etc). if you need locations, hit me back. 0d -Original Message- From: rebekah [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, December 19, 2003 8:26 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) record stores in s.f.
