So what labels are putting out groovy melodic techno ?

To me there is some kind of distinction between what some people might
descibe as melodic techno (ie clubby things like jaguar) and slightly
more abstract things like old school carl craig (ie desire) sure there
are lots of the former, but i can't seem to hear much of the latter...i
haven't been listening / buying vinyl for a while so chances are i might
not know the labels etc...

totally agree with whoever said mayer's mixing was all
about the context. got to see him in montreal last year
with reinhard voigt (voigt was live, mayer was djing)
and it was a masterful set. he started with totally
ambient pieces, then started adding downtempo beats and
played for an hour before he even got near four on the
floor 120bpmish territory. and he just built things
from there, song by song, every song in its place. take
care. andrew duke

So wait, can you just put a tune you already made into this as one

Some of my stuff is gonna be sold on i-tunes soon anyway, cause I got

Happy New Year,

There is this huge music archive called the "313 Jukebox" which features
music from Detroit at Gigantic Artspace down on Franklin Street. It's
through January.

http://www.giganticartspace.com

This is from the intro:

Introduction from installation:
Though far removed from America's so-called cultural capitals, Detroit is
hardly just a down-on-its-luck Rust Belt factory town; in fact, the Motor
City has been arguably the country's most important musical municipality
over the last half century, breeding ground to some of the world's most
potent movements: Motown soul, funk, punk, heavy metal, and techno, as well
as currently being home to hip-hop's biggest star and a flourishing garage
rock scene. The iPods in this installation are programmed with selections
providing an audio overview of the last five decades of Detroit area music,
a nearly 20 hour mix-tape of some of the finest and most essential
recordings in pop music history. Put on some earphones and scroll through
the songs, and you'll discover that Martha Reeves had nothing to worry
about; when it comes to music, forgetting the Motor City is absolutely
impossible.
--Mike Rubin

There is a list of the mixes here. Some obscure stuff.

Sorry to disagree with you on this one fellas- we had a ceremonial

twice in a row in the shop- I thought it went from dull and plodding to
pale and lifeless!! Oh well- def agree on the Rhythm and Sound CD

I've been toying with it. Right now the easiest and
fastest solution
would be to unzip the gzips and convert them to PDFs, which
are
searchable through Google.

Of course the issue that raises is exposing everyone's
email addresses
to spammers. There's the old "name AT service DOT com"
replacement,
but I'm still chewing on that one.

Yes indeed Ken - it is Mr 'Techno' himself - Mr Steve P. Watts (SPW)!

thank you all for playing and come back again next Tuesday when we'll ask
the question
"is looped based minimal techno really the apex of human being's

RE: (313) forthcoming fabric mix CD

2004-01-06 Thread Robert Taylor
Michael Mayer's Fabric CD is my release of the year - can't exaggerate how
fantastic it is - got a few CDR of mixes of his off the net and can't get
enough of them. He and his team in Cologne are going places this year for sure.
My other release of the year is Rhythm & Sound's The Artists on Burial Mix.

Maybe 'cause there's fewer releases. Also a lot of people maybe listen to
only a few styles of music too.

There's heaps of great stuff, now I budged the Jay-Z album, finally I am
loving Alton Miller's cruisy vibes.

Anyone heard the new Kevin Saunderson Trust The DJ mix?

(313) new Juan Atkins (was: playlist WNUR Chicago - 19 Dec 2003)

2004-01-06 Thread Matt MacQueen

Juan Atkins - A1 (New Religion test)
Hmmm anyone care to elaborate?

That will be a new Juan Atkins track I'd say ; )
I think the one Mr Macqueen has played there is a breakbeat thing ala
"the

passage". (or thats what I could liken it to most). The flip has a Kirk
Degiorgio re-edit, keeps the original track but just redoes the drums
pretty much. adds the odd bleep here and there too.

yeah what a nice smooth track too, really nice and warm. I defer all
release schedule questions to Commander Bond! ;) I mean, it's been a
long time since we've heard new material from Juan, right? It's a
track that once you hear that big round bassline + melody combo does
stick in your head a bit. I agree it reminds of 'The Passage', and
wow that was a great track that one is (and I wish I owned, for that
matter!) . If you download the show this track starts right after the
Ectomorph remix of Shari Vari near the end of Part 1, about 1:12:00
or so. I think i announced it was called 'Area 10' but I think that's
wrong.. forgot the track title?

cheers,

I've been toying with it. Right now the easiest and fastest solution
would be to unzip the gzips and convert them to PDFs, which are
searchable through Google.

Of course the issue that raises is exposing everyone's email addresses
to spammers. There's the old "name AT service DOT com" replacement,
but I'm still chewing on that one.

well, I don't agree too much - it's out there.

But, some of the most beautiful deep melodic techno I have heard for years
and years (honestly) WILL be out in 2004 for sure. and there's quite a bit
of it coming too.

RE: (313) 313 holiday quiz

2004-01-06 Thread diana potts

Honestly..i havent been excited about music in years.
I attempted to go record shopping whilst on vacation
and found that most of the records already sounded
like ones I had. the same things being repeated over
and over again. When I have bought records over the
last couple years its been on labels like Leaf, Hefty
and Ghostly. Things more along the lines of Prefuse
73, Tadd, and Thomas Jirku. I actually attempted to
play with my turntables the other day and wound up
feeling quite contempt with Pole and other dub
selections that were at least 2-4 years old.

The music that usually excites me nowadays is things
that are nostalgic like ODB or TCQ. While in toronto
we went to go hear Gerald play and it was nice to hear
electro pieced together well and just well...out.
Personally my lack of ethusiasm is probably because my
head is just not 95% deep in music anymore, dare i say
not even 50%- I have other things going on in my life
and not to mention I'm broke as a joke.

the forthcoming Telefon Tel Aviv album really got my
interest back in music. It was as if someone woke me up
from a sleep. tunes and artists along these lines
continually hold my interest for some reason or
another. perhaps it's because,to me, there seems to be
almost feelable texture to their music. It's emotional
and electronic at the same time. For me, anymore, the
boomboomboom has about as much emotion and excitement
as watching a shopping channel.

morning rants...
time for work.

(313) 313 holiday quiz

2004-01-06 Thread Philip

i checked out some vinyl over the weekend. I must have listened to a
hundred records or so. Needless to say most of them were pretty lame.
One that stood out, not enough to buy though, unfortunately, was the
future beat alliance 'lumiere' on verstatile. After hours of dreary and
depressingly generic music this one really stood out and sounded pretty
fresh & funky. The first question is 'where has beautiful groovy
melodic techno gone' ?

also - can anyone tell me which palette 12" the john tejada track
'digital people' appears on ?

AND - anyone know where the piano on theo parrish's 'friendly children'
is from ? it sounds familiar. Ummm is this record meant to sound like
this ? ? ? :^)

dunno about 'garage band' (which might be some kinda itms plugin...oh
yeah did anyone notice Environ now have a presence on ITMS?) but apple
will probs introduce some kind of wave editor (ala soundforge and
wavelab) or possibly a cut down logic (they didn't buy emagic for no
reason right?) as the new iApp later on today...

i want garage band to be a firewire based midi/audio IO device with a
few faders, bundled with the iApp above (for around $250)...highly
unlikely tho :)

again, point taken about the money ending up in the hands of corporations.

but... for the less technically inclined folks out there, buying a song on
iTunes and downloading it to an iPod sure makes things easy, which has the
potential of popularizing internet distribution of music. and once the
masses are comfortable with that, then independent distribution may more
feasible.

it's about evolution, not revolution.

to add to that list of record shops:
rock n soul
426 7th avenue (@35th st)

house, disco, massive bootleg sections, hiphop.
I've found some real gems here--like 5 sealed copies of 'don't lead me' by
housemaster baldwin on future sound records for 4.99 each.

(313) 313 holiday quiz

2004-01-06 Thread Philip

i checked out some vinyl over the weekend. I must have listened to a
hundred records or so. Needless to say most of them were pretty lame.
One that stood out, not enough to buy though unfortunately, was the
future beat alliance 'lumiere' on verstatile. After hours of dreary and
depressingly generic music this one really stood out and sounded pretty
fresh & funky. The first question is 'where has beautiful groovy melodic
techno gone' ?

also - can anyone tell me which palette 12" the john tejada track
'digital people' appears on ?

AND - anyone know where the piano on theo parrish's 'friendly children'
is from ? it sounds familiar. Ummm is this record meant to sound like
this ? ? ? :^)

this isnt bad news for the record companies as much as it is for the
distribution networks.

record labels serve many purposes, among them being prestige and a
recognized sound. if I tell you somethings on minus for instance, you're
gonna know what to expect more than picking people randomly online and going
by a 5-word description of "what genre" the music is. and apples not gonna
press up records for you :)besides, it would probably be green
see-through vinyl with a giant white apple in the center...

introducing the i12" or iVinyl

oh, go here, listen to number 4, and tell me if I should even bother

oh I think I took too much cough syrup ::p

thx

I'll add a hint too. He's from Texas, but he isn't a Bush, Downlow or Texas
Hardcorps affiliate. :) To pinpoint it even closer, he's from the fattest

Sure - here's what iTunes help says - the vital info is in point 3:

1 Insert an audio CD in your computer. After a moment, the songs on the CD
are listed in the iTunes window.

2 Click to remove the checkmark next to any songs you don't want to import
into your library.

3 If you want to remove the gap of silence that normally occurs between
songs, select two or more adjacent songs and choose Advanced > Join CD
Tracks.

*iTunes imports any joined songs as one track*. To change back to importing
the songs separately, select the joined songs and choose Advanced > Unjoin
CD Tracks.

4 Click the Import button to add the selected songs to your library. The
display area at the top of the iTunes window shows how much time it will
take to import each song. To cancel import, click the small X next to the
progress bar.
