nice recomendation, robin.
i picked up larry heard 'loosefingers pt2' this week, despite a moratorium
on record buying. brilliant. best thing i've heard all year - two killer
acid tracks, and a thin digital sounding vocal track about summertime that
doesn't move me.
is this a repress, new release, old tracks? que?

also picked up a unidisc disco re-release - vincent montana 'heavy vibes'.
very nice - sounds like classic new york deep house.

worth picking up?

oh yeah, and Mathew Jonson's Typerope has been repressed if anyone needs to
pick one up, available at the same store.

Thanks Jason. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

it's a track from the next Iridite EP by FAO Jesus aka Samuel, an old
friend of mine form Salford

I can tell by the above line, this is obviously a man of great style and
panache.

Everyone lives in Salford now, I get neighbours coming round for midi leads
and joints worths instead of cups of sugar and eggs. I find it quite funny,
but I'm not sure my girlfriend thinks it's quite as amusing.

Btw, if anyone is in Manchester tonight, me mate is dj'ing at Canteena, so
me and dunc are off down there for a pint if anyone else fancies it.

and while I'm on the subject, Miles is a good dj and has a cd here -

I've not heard it, there's probably alot of electronica type stuff on
there, I reckon some list heads would dig it.
ha, just looking and he's got single of the week on booomykat too!

fix!

anyway, rambling on again.

(313) Boomkat mixes

2004-08-20 Thread David Beattie
I have the Miles Boomkat mix - as Alex says its chock
full of electronica and nicely put together. I
thouroughly recommend all the Boomkat mix series BTW I
have
1 - Rob Hall (nice techno and electronica)
2. Bitstream (always seems electronic but lots of hip
hop etc in there - must be stuck together with a
computer but a good listen)
3. Cio (very downbeat, dark electronics)
4. On order
5. Miles (see above)
6. on order

and no I dont have anything to do with the shop, I
just used to be a CD only purchaser and know how hard
it can be to track down good stuff so its a heads up
to those guys ;-)

(313) Looking For New 'Detroit'-Style Techno

2004-08-20 Thread Ken Odeluga

Can anyone help with some recommendations for new music please?

Doesn't have to necessarily be by Detroit-resident producers but I'd prefer
it to have a tinge of that unmistakebale 'Detroit' flavour, which I for one,
still think is a valid demarcation.

Also, I'm using the word 'techno' quite loosely, but I am definitely looking
for upbeat dancefloor-orientated stuff. I'd would especially like to hear
about artists who might be 'newer' or just still relatively unsung, so far.

Many many thanks, in advance.

Hum... the first Senor Coconut was really good I thought, not gimmicky at all
(the second one was), it really showed how good are Kraftwerk tunes, the way
they remain excellent songs whatever dress you put on them. Plus, Senor on
stage was fabulous... The Nouvelle Vague, on first listen, didn't strike me as
really good, though it is a funny idea and tracks will soon end up on Buddha
Bar / trendy lounge comps and the like...

I was talking about the second one - I've just heard Akufen's Fabric mix, which
has Smoke On The Water on it and it sounds great in the mix, but when I bought
the album last year, I returned it cos it was way too gimmicky as you said -
these things need to be spread out thin, it's only when you stick them together

Hum... the first Senor Coconut was really good I thought, not gimmicky at all
(the second one was), it really showed how good are Kraftwerk tunes, the way
they remain excellent songs whatever dress you put on them. Plus, Senor on
stage was fabulous... The Nouvelle Vague, on first listen, didn't strike me as
really good, though it is a funny idea and tracks will soon end up on Buddha

I have it - if you listen to one or two of the songs I
think its different, melodic and quite nicely done
however if you try and listen to the album as a whole
its all in the same vein and gets pretty repetitive
(all good just not at the same time is my view)

The new Moonstarr release entitled Detroit might fit the bill. It's an
homage to the Detroit sound, and has been getting excellent reviews!

Here's a few quotes...
DJ Rolando - I really like Detroit - its got a very nice old school
feel to it

Nick Luscombe (XFM) - Classic - will probably play every Sunday for the
rest of the year

Wai Wan (Earth Project) - This is LARGE! Detroit brings back motor city
nostalgia while slacker has been tearing it on the floor (Charted #2)

Moonstarr Detriot on Sonar Kollektiv

Cheers!

Can anyone help with some recommendations for new music please?

Doesn't have to necessarily be by Detroit-resident producers but I'd
prefer
it to have a tinge of that unmistakebale 'Detroit' flavour, which I for
one,
still think is a valid demarcation.

Also, I'm using the word 'techno' quite loosely, but I am definitely

far.

(313) Looking for a track on vinyl

2004-08-20 Thread Luis-Manuel Garcia

Ok, can anybody help me find this track on vinyl?

After 8, Golden Boy feat. Miss Kitten, from the EP 'Or'. This popped
up on my iPod shuffle list and I was struck with an overwhelming desire
to grind on a nearby lamppost or mailbox. Unfortunately, the recording
is pretty old by now, so I haven't been able to find it by the 'usual'
methods.

thanks in advance!

P.S. I just came across an ancient recording of K.Hand's Drip. What
an excellent bassline! I've got a find a way to use that track again.

But seeing el Maestro on laptop live with the band running all over

(313) new film looks rather techno

2004-08-20 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight
http://www.mgm.com/ua/code46/#

In an eerily possible near-future, where cities are heavily
controlled and only accessible through checkpoints, people
cannot travel unless they have papelles (special travel
insurance). Beyond these cities are shanty towns jammed with
non-citizens who lack the necessary papers and whose lives are
severely restricted. When an investigator (Tim Robbins) is sent
to solve a case of fake papelles, he falls in love with the
woman behind the forgeries (Samantha Morton). Directed by
Michael Winterbottom (In This World, 24 Hour Party People).

In case you want to tune in, he'll be playing from about 1am onwards
(BST) on 107.9FM in the Oxford area. If you're beyond the reach of
