(313) mix WNUR Chicago - 13 May 2005 - Life on Mars

2005-05-25 Thread Matt MacQueen

Clinically Inclined
13 May 2005
Fridays 9:30pm - 12:30am, 89.3 FM WNUR Chicago
http://SonicSunset.com

Part 1: Deeper crate diggin this week, back to some proper soul and
spaced out jazz-funk, tracing it's way to early-era house. New,
forthcoming music on Unclassics: a beautifully sublime dub mix by
Morgan Geist of an old discovery by Victor, he distills italo down to
its irrestible beats and melodies that recall the deep, warm grooves of
classic Chicago house.

Part 2: a slow, lush wash from chicago's damon lamar (baby pop) fades
into more dsp-ed action from adam johnson, then into downbeat
electronics, including classic sci-fi autechre. then we go midtempo
with new chugging bass-heavy waves from arctic hospital, and some old
school chicago business in the mix, ending with some faster-moving dark
melodics from the uk, detroit, and nyc.

Part 1> Matt MacQueen

Leon Thomas - China Doll - Blues & The Soulful Truth (Flying Dutchman)
Donny Hathaway - The Slums - Extension of a Man (Atco)
Bobby Womack - Woman's Gotta Have It (UA)
Gato Barbieri - Los Desperados - Caliente (A&M)
Dexter Wansel - Life on Mars (Philadeliphia)
Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes - Expansions - Expansions
(Flying Dutchman)

The Detroit Experiment - Midnight at Twenty Grand (Planet E)
Steve Arrington - I Feel So Real [Extended] (Atlantic)
Kinky Foxy - So Different (Hot)
Virgo - Go Wild Rhythm Trax (Other Side)
Master C&J - Face It [Club] (State St.)
Victor - Go On Do It [Morgan Geist Breakfast Club Dub] (Unclassics)
Virgo 4 - Do You Know Who You Are (Trax)
Metro Area - Things Fall - 6 (Environ)

Part 2> David Siska

damon lamar - rising sun (tetrode)
adam johnson - kungpow - pressure point ep (parotic)
farben - alpin (formatted) (klang)
alex cortex - a2 - ctrl ep (ann aimee)
autechre - kalpol introl - incunabula (warp)
sunrise society - astral travel (pacific)
the stripper - after dark (pal sl)
murcof - ulysses [fax rmx] (leaf)
arctic hospital - cold wrapper - infirm and attentive (narita)
series 7 - a1 (evolution)
chip e - jack for daze [dub] (underground)
da posse - strings [fingers mix] (future)
scan-7 - system work (underground resistance)
solcyc - off the man (ifach)
deepart - picture #1 - collage #1 (rushhour)
dark comedy - inaroom - seven days (elypsia)
jeff mills - absolutespecial (axis)
damon wild - downtown world pt 1 (kanzleramt)

But if he was such a good guy why did the promoters leave him outside on the

How about you bring some Dust 12"s to Manchester, arrive by 5:30 and take
them into Piccadilly Records to see if they'll stock them?
They've been thin on the ground here - I bought Black Dog in Pelican Neck
but haven't seen the other 3 in Manchester (though fortunately I picked the
Claude up in Hardwax).
And OK, I know I could go check them on the web (I did do this with the Fred
G) and buy them there but generally (for several reasons including I only
have PC at work and don't always have time, plus I like to check the full
track if I can) I buy in shops.

Hey Andrew.

Ok, well I only flicked through it in the shop, but it was a 3 (? possibly
4) tracker. Mid tempo soul cut.

I was going to say 'new' soul style, but tom and cyclone seemed to use 'neo
soul' and they're more clued up than me on that.

I think the producer is Quentin Harris (?), and there just wasn't anything
about it that grabbed me enough to buy it. I can't even describe it that
well I'm afraid as I cant remember any details about it now!

I remember thinking "Oh, why did they use some smooth nu soul producer,
would have sounded much better ROUGH!".

But hey, most of the records I like sell 500 copies, so I'm sure that
wouldn't have been a smart move on the record companies part.

I found you some clips here tho!

Hi Fab

This answer is assuming that the label is in a country that offers
copyright protection...

The example you give isn't just plagiarism, it's (potentially) a breach
of copyright. What may constitute a breach of copyright includes
reproduction, performing/ playing, communicating it, or adapting a
"substantial part" of the work. What constitutes a "substantial part"
depends on a case by case basis but the important factor is that it is
recogisable and distinctive - I'd imagine a loop would be quite
distinctive.

If I were your friend I would write a letter to that label again,
outlining those facts and ask for some remuneration for the use of that
loop.

In terms of 'code of conduct' etc relating to making of music using
samples/ previously recorded material, anyone who is making this music
who wants to release it commercially should really go out and try and
get those licences first hand. The Beastie Boys were talking about that
in an issue of Wired earlier this year. I can't remember what specific
cases there are out there, but I seem to recall that even though you can
argue that the adaption is a whole new original work, courts around the
world are usually on the side of the original copyright owner. It's not
very practical, but the only way to resolve these things is through the
courts, and no one wants to have to go through that.

On a practical note, and I know this sounds really anal retentive, I'd
make sure that any letters I send out to labels in future clearly stated
that permission needed to be sought before use; or alternatively state
very clearly that it's for listening and review only and for no other
reason. For non-commercial releases, I suggest a Creative Commons
licence.

Cheers
Melody

hi list,

a friend of mine recently send a demo cd-r to a well-known, and dare i

A few months later he listens to a new release by them and finds that
the main loop that one of the tracks is built around has been taken from
his cd-r.
i've heard it and it objectively is the case

my friend's only problem with all this is that they didnt wirte to him
telling him that they liked the track and wanted to use a sample of it.
it's not a quesiton of being ripped-off but rather having some sort of
acknowledgement and appreciation being manifested.

i think this is an example fo what is or isnt to be considered
plagiarism in electronic music. given that it is music made by using
samples and also previously recorded material, is there a line that is
not meant or even a sort of code of conduct to follow so that someone
doesnt feel ripped-off?

cheers,

Re: (313) Stevie Wonder ? DO NOT PRE_ORDER

2005-05-25 Thread Cyclone Wehner
There's a release date for Australia in July on Universal - I just spoke to
a rep there this morning. Possibly the reactions to the early promos were
not promising. They seemed to place a lot of weight on feedback which
doesn't happen often here. I love his old stuff but the sampler is as I say
underwhelming...

Re: (313) is there such a thing as plagiarism?

2005-05-25 Thread James_Bucknell

apparently this is a problem in hip hop. i recently read/listened (?) to an
article about the same problem, can't remember where. maybe it was on the
bbc site or fader mag or wax poetics.
excuse my rudimentary knowledge. anyway, there are beat hunters - people
who go through old david alexrod records or whatever and find breaks/loops.
they then try to sell the beats or pitch themselves by showing their cd-r
of beats to big name artists and producers only to be ripped off.

hi list,

a friend of mine recently send a demo cd-r to a well-known, and dare i say,

respected label looking to hopefully work with them.
A few months later he listens to a new release by them and finds that the
main loop that one of the tracks is built around has been taken from his
cd-r.
i've heard it and it objectively is the case

my friend's only problem with all this is that they didnt wirte to him
telling him that they liked the track and wanted to use a sample of it.
it's
not a quesiton of being ripped-off but rather having some sort of
acknowledgement and appreciation being manifested.

i think this is an example fo what is or isnt to be considered plagiarism
in
electronic music. given that it is music made by using samples and also
previously recorded material, is there a line that is not meant or even a
sort of code of conduct to follow so that someone doesnt feel ripped-off?

Re: (313) Stevie Wonder ?

2005-05-25 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I have an advance pro of about 4/5 songs including the single.
I'd love to rave about it but I was seriously underwhelmed. It's very MOR. I
think the single is cool - nice upbeat song. I believe the Australian album
release has been pushed back to July (unsure if it's out in the US as of
yet).
The ironic thing is that some of the neo-soul acts are now doing better soul
than Wonder (though that's not to say his material doesn't have feeling,
it's more the songs and arrangements didn't do much for me - it's more Ebony
& Ivory than his classic era/s).
On the soul tip...
At first I was sceptical of the hype behind John Legend, wondering why he
was blowing up and acts like Van Hunt weren't - I wondered if it wasn't his
association with Kanye West. But I saw him live in Melbourne and was blown
away. He really gives his all as a performer.
He's also a very humble man - no big entourages who throw their weight
around as with some big acts, just a very personable tour manager.

(313) 1200 stuff

2005-05-25 Thread Philip

peeps

I am having a few problems with my 1200 and was wondering if anyone might be
able to suggest what the problem might be. I tried sending this to 313
techknow but that doesn't seem to be working. I can assure you that I only
play 313 vinyl on the 1200, in case this seems a bit OT :^)

I bought a s/h 1200 a year or so ago and a new shure SC35C cartridge with
the pale blue needle. recently, I accidentally damaged the needle and
replaced it with the yellow needle for the M35S cart, which I was told is
the only replacement currently available.
(see http://www.turntablelab.com/index1.html for pix of these carts &
needles).

the new yellow needle is clearly higher output and generally sounds better,
although I have found that some records sound a little distorted, especially
the kick drums, and the needle tends to skip and jump the groove sometimes.
I have checked all the adjustments and set up the tonearm as per the shure
website instructions (3 - 5g tracking, height 5, cartridge towards rear of
headshell) as well as trying different setting for tonearm height and
anti-skating, but none of these adjustments seem to improve the sound.
although the old needle is damaged, I can still use it and with all the same
settings, it doesn't skip or sound distorted. I have looked at the new
needle with a magnifying glass and it seems to be perfectly OK.

please hit me back is you might have had similar experiences and can suggest
what else I can try. thanx a bunch.
