(313) Cool music

2005-05-27 Thread Stoddard, Kamal
Time for a proper post. With all the hubbub about henrik, this may have been
mentioned and I missed it, but...

HENRIK SCHWARZ B/W JU JU CHRISTIAN - jeff b/w feelgood - zeppelin
the henrik schwarz track is bananas. Looping vocal, deep beats, subdued bass
and a crescendo that gives me smiles. I coulda swore I heard a little whisper
going Sunday, summetime, mojito's and you but it could've been me talking to
myself :P . Checka.

2dawgs - it's a dawgs life - mood music (jori hulk and 2nd skin rmxs)
The original is dope. One of the mixes (jori's I think) has this hollow drum
sound in the beginning (pretty sure he just verbed the bass) that reminds me of
insistent rhythm off fragile 03. dope. This ones the grover. The other
mix is a stompin jacked up 4x4 electro-synth monster that starts like something
on viewlexx and gets more frantic and louder as it progresses into...
something... It would annoy the fxck outta me on the dancefloor.

Happy hunting.

Second-generation Detroit-adjacent techno star
Richie Hawtin is wrapping up work on his next
mix-album, DE9: Transitions, which is due out in
September, according to his publicist.

The CD promises to push the concept of the
mix-CD, with his label claiming that it will be
the first fully encompassing
5.1-channel, surround-sound mix. It will also
come packaged with a music-and-video DVD version,
with visuals to go to the music. Hawtin has
apparently been exploring the latest software
technology from his new base in Berlin, and the
mixes will apparently come not on the
song-to-song level, but perhaps deeper, on a
track-by-track (as in studio tracks -- voice,
drum, synth, etc.) level, a la Sasha's work with
Ableton Live. (Hawtin has had a custom Allen
Heath Xone:92 mixer made to control Ableton
Live via MIDI).

The CD is the follow up to 2001's DE9: Closer to
the Edit, and 1999's Decks, EFX 909, a
well-received series that has pushed the
boundaries of the DJ mix by adding effects and
the Roland 909 drum machine to the equation.

The electronic music world is incredibly
difficult to stay ahead of. What is branded cool
one week, might be slated as dirty the next.
Endless techniques are used by artists and their
management to try to keep themselves beyond
mainstream musical comprehension, and therefore
slipping from the razor’s edge where
legends can be crafted.

Richie Hawtin is far beyond the forefront of
electronic music. His uncrackable image matches
his flawless sound and genre pioneering styles.
After 4 years, he is back with his latest
transformation, evolving alongside technology to
ensure he doesn't get lost in a world of dated
sounds, average compilations and half-assed
singles.

His studio in Berlin has been in full production
for the third release in the DE9 series.
Following on from Decks, EFX 909 in 1999
and then Closer to the Edit in 2001 DE9:
Transitions is the long awaited latest mix from
Hawtin. Utilising the latest recording
technologies and automation techniques, he is
said to explore not only the traditional musical
transition over time and amplitude (X and Y) but
the depth (Z) in terms of space and perception -
bringing you much closer to the edit so to speak.

Released in September of 2005 on CD DVD,
DE9: Transitions will be recorded within a fully
immersive 5.1 Surround Sound environment,
complete with high resolution audio versions and
accompanying visuals.

Richie Hawtin will preview DE9: Transitions in
5.1 surround sound for the first time at Sonar,
Barcelona (June 16 -18, 2005).

Title: Room With A View - DVD Preview Showing

Outline of Project:
Over the past 10 years, Jeff Mills has been quietly envolved in film and
moving images. Right now, this may not be so surprising as you may be aware
of his most recent works of Fritz Lang's Metropolis (2000), Buster Keaton's
Three Ages (2004) and Claire Denis' Vendredi Soir (2003) but, he's been
busier than that. What he is ready to reveal is a collection of film shorts
and conceptual works dating back as far as 1993, starting with the Axis
release of AX-010 Growth Ep.
Since then, he has created visual works for most of his LPs that were only
used for promotional vehicles and were rarely seen by the public.

Anything I'd like to say:

Theories and subjects of substance are the elementary elements that fuels
the minds within our Axis.

Re: (313) New Richie Hawtin Mix CD: DE9: Transition

2005-05-27 Thread fab.

for underground i meant less marketing talk, less bs - more straight to the
point, stick to the facts type of thing..no superlatives, no dubious
statements on one's status in the music world or

i think what UR did was good for that time, now the international electronic
music scene is a completely different game ie. more competition, more
standardised product, so you have to make the public more aware. i feel that
good product alone is not enough these days

but i am hardly an expert...these are jsut some of the musings i do when
thinking about label promotionbtw, this should go on the ir-labels yahoo
group!

i agree..but then again, alot of promotion sounds corny. actually, to be
honest, promotion per se is corny IMO. i now i feel awkward every time i
have to write some PR stuff.
plus richie is a mainstream techno artist, so you know his PR isn't
exactly underground if you know what i mean. im not too surprised reading
this sort of hyped out PR spin.

But what is underground? I would define it as doing nothing and anyone who
hold up UR as doing it underground is just plain wrong, they had one of
the best PR spins in techno I've ever witnessed.

anyway, i think Richie is a great innovator, its just funny in a way,

i've came to hear three Maetrik's rels from 2003:

although i didnt instantly fell in love with vocals, i've grown to like

EPs [groovin all day long infact;D], especially 'freaky flow' original

here's a theory - these guys will stop playing this stuff when it ceases to

I think they're mining for cool points
either that or the sound of progressive house/trance is being influenced
by techno again which is no bad thing really. If it's making crappy music

I would *love* it, when progressive dj's would start playing (proper)
detroit techno. Then finally I would be able to hear some good music on the
radio, wich would be a good thing. Or wouldn't it? Besides, most of these
new red planet records, for instance, really sound like trance. And that new
octave one record sounded pretty progressive to my ears. Wich is NOT a good
thing, though. :-)

I agree with the complaint but not the argumentation. The if its
good its good argument sounds a lot like the arguments so often used
against popular music, ethnic music, race music (before it was
named jazz), etc... But I agree that the epidemic of sub-genres
story has become a rather tired cliché in EDM writing.

according to my roommate mr peabody's is great..

Dancemania fans take note, supposedly they have the entire backstock left over
from Barney's One Stop Records and most of it is sitting around on the floor
waiting to be stocked. Anything you find in there is $8 or less I guess.
Apparently lots of old classic Chicago jack tracks, booty and acid.
