(313) Derrick May and Norm Talley mixes

2005-07-14 Thread dan

Hello all

Thought list peeps might be interested to know that Samurai FM has
just posted mixes by Derrick May and Norm Talley.

Derrick's is the closing set from the first DEMF and Norm's is from
this year's Beatdown party at Agave.

Haven't had a chance to listen to Derrick's yet, but Norm's is good,
could do with a tracklisting actually.

This set is awesome and full of energy.

I have the real audio video file somewhere in my archives. I don't think
Ive seen derrick get into it as much as he does here.

I thought this set was owned by Groovetech (RIP). the lawyer in me is
wondering how they got the rights to this!

i missed the beatdown joint this year, sunday night i passed out
in the hotel room before i could get it together to go out to
agave. however, last year i did make it and norm's set was NASTY.
the reason im posting is because i just saw the other day that he
has that set from last year for sale on a mix CD on emporium50.
next time i order from them im definitely picking up a copy. norm
is definitely the man.

Mayday's set at that 'inaugural DEMF' is almost legendary, imo, and I
think many who've heard it would agree with me.

Now that I own better technology, I'm going to download it again for
safe keeping.

That, and of course the ridiculously iconic 'mix-up' cd are what I
direct people who have never heard a Derrick May mix before, to listen
to. It's also a good way of reminding yourself, if required, what his
style, at it's best, is all about.

I'm with you on this I think, Paul. The slightly weird thing is that I
am quite a fan of the stuff which has been *influenced* by so-called
Italo - I-F, Passarani and the Nature/Pigna things in general and more
(inc. some Viewlexx).

I say so-called, 'cause when I were a lad - admittedly, that was about
50 decades ago - Italian dance music was basically straight-up and quite
'black' disco. All I need to say is Change (and other Mauro Malavasi
projects) for you to know what I'm meaning. That group was a start for
Vandross and Jocelyn Brown after all. And of course one must mention
Moroder. It wasn't this
'so-naff-it's-good-Casio-made-electronic-teen-disco'!

Anyway, I know I'm being slightly harsher than I mean to be and not
entirely serious. But in general, also, I'm not feeling it. And perhaps
the bigger problem is that people who *are* feeling it, seldom play what
they regard as the really good stuff so I can get some sort of education
in my idiot head about it! Alex, I don't think you dropped any in Public
Life did you?!? ;-)
I can't remember the last DJ who bends my ear about Italo, who played an
Italo track out. Rick Hopkins (Haywire) is a rare exception.

This is actually a live recording of them from the Sat of Fuse-In (the
tracklisting for the Breezeblock show isn't 100% accurate I'm afraid). They
said that they're going to put it out later this year on their own label.

TO THE BONE
Saturday 23rd July
The George IV
144 Brixton Hill
Entry £5
10-6am

Following a vigorous bash in February, we're back, with a new name, at
Brixton's original Michelin-starred gastropub, The George IV. Come and join us
for a party that will forever be remembered as the night of men's behinds.

Our guests are:

Raf Rundell (Accidental) - The man behind the man behind the first, and
conceivably last, ever track to be made from a Big Mac carton. Expect Harold
Melvin, Energy Flash and mixing with charisma...

and

Alex Bond (New Religion) - The man behind the man behind the last record ever
played at Tresor. Expect techno records you really ought to know the names of
and disco records you could never hope to.

Residents are:

Little Tony (Soundslike Werk - the man behind your mum)
and
Charlie Blew (the man behind corn plasters)

The drinks are cheap and the DJs are precious. Plus, get three chakras for a
tenner in the Zen garden.

TO THE BONE

Hop House, Heckno and Half a Bogle of Dancehall

JEFF MILLIGAN aka ALGORITHM .

In 1986, at the age of 14, Jeff Milligan (aka :Algorithm) had his first
exposure to electronic music via some of Chicago, Detroit and Toronto's
earliest alternative radio programs. A year later in 1987, Jeff decided to
dedicate his life to DJing and producing music. His close proximity to the
Great Lakes Triangle : Toronto, Chicago and Detroit, led Jeff to develop a
foremost influence from the early years of American house and techno. As
Jeff delved deeper, he developed a keen interest in various German and
British artists and record labels. The music Jeff played at the time and
still does to this day, has a dual, continental European and American
influence, the more experimental, more minimal sound of the two
continents, the origins of what evolved into a unique Canadian sound. Jeff
was the first DJ to expose a Canadian audience to his unique brand of
techno and house music selections, preceded only by Richie Hawtin. Jeff's
highly technical, three turntable style put him in high demand across
North America and by the age of twenty, Jeff was playing the Midwest
circuit (Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland etc.) and nationwide, all over
Canada. Jeff is legendarily regarded by his contemporaries as one the most
technically talented DJ's in the world. By 1999, Jeff began touring the
European circuit and by 2002, toured Japan. Jeff has since performed in
almost every major city in Europe, North America, and Japan, spanning the
globe, maintaining a rigorous tour schedule, DJ'ing and performing live at
the world's finest venues in support of the music he loves. He has
headlined alongside almost every prolific producer to have graced the
electronic music stage in the past decade. Jeff's own musical compositions
have also had considerable impact on the world and he is highly regarded
as a musician as well as a DJ. Jeff's last full length album project,
Composure (Force Inc., Germany) features Jeff's recomposed work of some
of the world's most prolific artists including : Farben (Klang
Elektronik), Matmos (Bjork), Kid 606 (Tigerbeat), Sutekh (Context), Twerk
(Force Inc.), Safety Scissors (Proptronix) and Donacha Costello. Jeff's DJ
production work for +8, and loops on the first Serotonin Records (NYC)
lockgroove compilations, were among the first released material under
Jeff's algorithm moniker. Since then, Jeff has developed a long and
impressive discography with numerous releases on a variety of
international record labels over the past few years, including : 240 Volts
(UK), BipHop (France), Tongut (Switzerland), Transmediale (Germany),
Background (Germany), NextDoor (Canada), Onitor

Re: (313) baby ford - very ep

2005-07-14 Thread fab.

ok, so

the tracks are all very sparse and dare i say minimal in the real sense of
the word. not over produced to hell clickhouse minimalism and a very
repetitive tracks, like most of ford's output.

my favourite tracks are the ones on side a - Very and Test.
Very has a lovely warm synth pads going on underneath that gives it a summer
and sunny feel to itit reminds me of those shimmering effects you see
when heat rises off of the ground when seen from a distance.
the rhythms are puntuated by plodding toms and some bouncing rimshots. a
subtle snare comes in to give the track more groove. another delayed (but
only just) cymbal comes in to wake you from the siesta.

laidback and understated and all very looped

Test is more typical baby ford darkness starting with a circular and low
bass loop with toms and single snares punding away on top, interspersed with
some random wizz sound. gradually a more acidic flangerised plucking sound
comes into the mix and then the loop gets stronger and changes pitch in a
gradual crescendo and starts tweaking around. nice and dark, a little evil
too - a total contrast to the previous summer vibez :) play this loud.

im not going to bother with the other 2 tracks since i have to leave (and
since i didnt like them). what i can say is that the are more or less in
line with the whole release, few sounds looping around, changing in subtle
ways from start to finish, so it would seem that nothing much is going on,
when instead it is. a bit like evolution.
