Hi Wes, Cyberspace has been off limits to me for the last week or so. The mixes are located at http://www.coke-smyth.net/Rainforest_Jazz.mp3 and at http://www.coke-smyth.net/the_wake.mp3. You should be able to d/l just from this email, or maybe by ftp:// instead of http:// It is case sensitive though so beware... cheers C Hello Charles, I really loved your first mix and would like to d/l this one rather than just stream it. Could you please possibly make it like the 'Rainforest Jazz' page where the mix title enables one to click and save onto one's desktop? On a mac I'm unsure how else to d/l the mix (I'm assuming, of course, that you don't mind people downloading the mix). Many thanks either way. Keep it up. As Anthony Shakir said to me once, the world needs more of the good stuff. Sometimes when people went all quiet I posted something just to get a discussion going, but I've decided that as list admin it's kind of a cheesy thing to do, so I've stopped. Sometimes I think that pretty much every possible thing to be said about Detroit Techno has been said already on this list, multiple times, well and poorly, so we await new developments, which can be thin on the ground, especially in summer. It's like the contemporary authors whose books I read. There are 15 or 20 authors whose books I will read as soon as they're published. Most of the time I'm caught up, and I just want them to write faster.

Lets talk about live sets for a change - who are your favourite Detroit live artists why? I saw Rob Hood live recently and was pretty disappointed - he was doing the whole 'play one track, stop, reprogram, play another track' thing. A lot of detroit artists seem to do that, performing more like a band, i've never really understood why. Does anyone here prefer that kind of show to a continuously evolving set? Carl Craig last year at the festival was phenomenal I thought - he gets plenty of criticism these days for various reasons but that totally blew me away...Scan 7 Octave One both do very tight shows too. NB -No chat about hardware vs laptop btw, this is strictly about talent! And first person to mention Jeff or Richie gets a severe beating... :p kent williams wrote: Sometimes when people went all quiet I posted something just to get a discussion going, but I've decided that as list admin it's kind of a cheesy thing to do, so I've stopped. Re: (313) Live sets (was (313) ping)
Yeah, Kevin Reynolds is great. He's playing at the Bohemian National Home this Saturday in Detroit. Also love Octave One and Scan 7. I went to a Scan 7 and Surgeon party last fall at TV Bar in Detroit, it was slamming. Except, TV Bar is called TV Bar for a reason - it's a bar with bunches of flat screen TVs all around, pretty cheesy and they get in the way. Like there's a huge tv right behind the DJ stage. ? And, Surgeon left it on during his set, playing cartoons with the captions turned on. ??? Thankfully, when Lou Robinson got up there (it was just him as Scan 7 that night), he turned the tv off right quick. His live set was really great. I caught Dan Bell doing his live set on Sunday. heres a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHWubgSXMrMfeature=channel_page. He was playing all hardware. I saw a pro one, 909, rackmount sampler and mixing desk. The set was faithful reproductions of all the dbx classics with live vocals. Pretty much the same as at DEMF but cool to see the action up close. Didn't really seem to be improvised or spontaneous at all but fun. It can certainly work well with more downbeat or dubby music, but it's a bit jarring with dancefloor tracks (and it doesn't get much more slamming than Rob hood!) - plus I think one of the greatest features of live electronic music is the ability to blend little bits of different tracks together alongside improvised ideas, rather than just performing a single track as a whole then moving on to another..
Re: (313) Live sets (was (313) ping)
Going on ten years now, but Theorem sticks in the mind as one of the most satisfying and sonically involving live techno acts I've witnessed, partly due to the warmth of personality/sound he generated. No flash, all the fireworks were in the music. As mentioned by others, Octave One/RNG can be incredible live from my experience, due to their understanding of the dynamics of the genre. Pacing like a good dj set, but jacked up to a truly moving level both emotionally and physically.
