Really? I'm not sure what age has to do with it though I suppose it's more measured with less urgency but no less lively. It's grown-up music. I'm neither young or old either. I'm not sure I can tell that much from music or whether or not it really matters. I've got a couple of Tektite records that I loved playing years ago - TV and Tvboy. Given the strength of those I always meant to check out more from this label. I actually never heard the earlier releases. I'll check it out...Hard to find the time to listen to long mixes. Re: (313) KRU Noise Radio 2013-04-20
I'm 44. I'll leave Kent to share his age if he so desires. In explanation: I've mellowed somewhat in terms of the speed of the tempos I produce and mix as I age. Example: I was lucky enough to have a track released on Matrix back in 1995, but quite soon thereafter lost my master and copy of the CD compilation. At the time the song was produced, it was the tempo I was into. I only recently reacquired that CD and I knew, as I was about to first listen to the track in 18 or so years, that it was going to be faster than what I produce/play these days. I figured it would be a bit faster than what I'm playing these days. Well, it was VERY fast. I shudder to listen to it now simply because it is so incredibly fast, it gallops along like some out of control train. Anyway, that's the way I'm feeling now as I get older, I still listen to a huge variety of styles of music, much of it much faster than the music I play on the show, of course, but personally I tend to make and mix music at much much slower tempos than when I was 20 years younger. http://andrewdukeinthemix.com On Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 10:29 AM, Kerr Knoll kerr.kn...@me.com wrote: Well said :) On Apr 24, 2013, at 02:24 PM, Lechowicz, Thomas tale...@pointpark.edu wrote: On the note of age, I'm 21 and thoroughly enjoy the material you guys put out. I'm going to be 56 in August. My first appreciation of electronic music happened when I was 14 or 15 (Kraftwerk! Tangerine Dream!) -- unless you count Switched On Bach, which was in heavy rotation at our house when I was 11 or 12 ... During the disco period (which ran roughly from when I was 18 until 21 or so) I gravitated to the more electronic stuff like Giorgio Moroder. I got into techno house music seriously about 20 years ago... The mixes I post are from Noise Radio KRUI (Iowa City) -- I don't get asked to DJ in clubs very often. Since I'm mostly using Ableton Live, some premeditation is involved, and my mixes are sorted from lowest tempo to highest. If you can start out at a lower tempo, the higher tempos later are felt as an increase in energy. On Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 8:56 AM, Kerr Knoll kerr.kn...@me.com wrote: I'm 38. I'm another techno-dad. There's a recent piece by Giorgio Moroder on SoundCloud on his introduction to the Moog and his work. I thought it was interesting. He's posted some interesting clips on SoundCloud actually. I'm not too keen on the 'I Feel Love' track with Donna Summer but he's cool. Seeing him with his white hair and still so much into the 'future' music is fantastic. You don't do yourself as much credit as you deserve with your mixing, but you are particularly modest :)On Apr 24, 2013, at 04:03 PM, kent williams chaircrus...@gmail.com wrote:I'm going to be 56 in August. Hi Andrew, I think all of us producers who are a bit older have experienced this same thing! I just discovered a CD of originals I made in 1999 (some of them with nothing but hardware and cassette four-track). I too was amazed just how ridiculously fast some of the tempos were, and also how hard some of it was generally. ~David On Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 8:43 AM, Andrew Duke Cognition Audioworks new email address andrewdukecognit...@gmail.com wrote: I'm 44. We’re working on it right now, the idea, and we’re going to be playing keyboards and performing live. This is not a pre-recorded computer set, so I have to go back in the studio to do that – there is no way around it. So yes I guess you can say I’m going back in the studio.” *** Also, I actually found the following interesting, and while perhaps a bit convenient for an artist who hasn't produced in years, I see his point: But there is a downside to these rumblings of action, as May explains. “If I was going to do it – go back in the studio full time and really devote myself to it – then I actually would stop playing records, completely. Because in my mind, you can’t play records and then go and make them. It fucks with the creative process. You end up being subconsciously influenced by what you just heard. I never understand these guys who go into the studio and then the next day they’re playing a party. I don’t get it. I don’t like to believe I make music just for the dance floor. If I did I’d be disappointed with myself, I like to believe I make romantic stories, or dark stories. But making something just for the dance floor seems quite contrary.” http://www.beat.com.au/content/derrick-may

I may have put that down to youth as well, but I'm not sure. On Apr 24, 2013, at 02:43 PM, Andrew Duke Cognition Audioworks new email address andrewdukecognit...@gmail.com wrote: I'm 44. Anyway, that's the way I'm feeling now as I get older, I still listen to a huge variety of styles of music, much of it much faster than the music I play on the show, of course, but personally I tend to make and mix music at much much slower tempos than when I was 20 years younger. http://andrewdukeinthemix.com On Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 10:29 AM, Kerr Knoll kerr.kn...@me.com wrote: Well said :) On Apr 24, 2013, at 02:24 PM, "Lechowicz, Thomas" tale...@pointpark.edu wrote: On the note of age, I'm 21 and thoroughly enjoy the material you guys put out. K-os.net has been on ice for some time. It's on my to-do list to use HTML5 Audio instead of the Flash audio player, or one that works with mobile devices. I'm still interested in making more of it, and I wondered about a digital download service where you don't pay extra for WAV or FLAC or whatever, with some conveniences from SoundCloud such as the web-upload with progress bar and such like, but not for random users - more selective and trusted uploaders. Not sure I've got the time for additional programming jobs presently. I've been involved in some other projects like Playdar, a music content resolver and I had an idea for a couple of other things, Electronome (recommendation engine) and Playnode (decentralised distribution and music discovery) which were never completed. I had thought about an alternative music distribution network using a decentralised set-up, some kind of peer-to-peer software.Looking to the future I'm keeping an eye on developments in response to services like Facebook, which are very centralised and will never be in the true spirit of the Internet. I'm not the only person interested in this kind of thing. I'm sure that there'll be some more positive technologies to help moves thing in the right direction again.I'm quite happy learning to make and makingtracks now :)Music and technology...On Apr 24, 2013, at 05:02 PM, Andrew Duke In The Mix/Cognition Audioworks andrewdukecognit...@gmail.com wrote:Diggin' your tunes, Steve.
