For me there's something that I hear as Detroit in music: it's honest
and openly emotional, it makes a direct appeal to your senses and your
heart. Marvin Gaye, Moodymann, Amp Fiddler are embedded in a
tradition. Make something excellent and if you can't quite do that,
make people feel something.

I get a lot of P-Funk from it as well. I think he played with them at one
point maybe? As you say, lots of obvious nods to Motown, but seamlesslessly
blended with what is very recognisably “him”.

"The One" is such a fantastic representation of Detroit music. Detroit
music attracted me by the way that unique musical environment
produces such original, heartfelt music. The very conscious use of
1970s musical tropes in a new century to say something new. And
there's an unbroken chain going back to the 1950s and beyond. People
who were involved with Motown were still around as guys like Amp came
along.

For me there's something that I hear as Detroit in music: it's honest

Some of his best music here. Seven Mile is especially attention grabbing

out I'd slept on this), but the whole album is really nice.

Hello Esteemed Techno Lovers,

I know you haven't seen a recent vinyl release from me lately. I've been
busy in my studio cooking up all kinds of things. As we look to the close
of 2023 I am thankful for it but am really looking forward to a New Year.

I present to you "Purple Things", my latest project but not the last for
2023. I really want to release these 11 songs on vinyl but I've enjoyed
creating them so much that I can't wait to share them with you. I'm hoping
I can earn some money towards pressing these by selling this advance
digital album.

In thinking about Amp, I forgot about how much he did to help Dilla when he
was just a kid. Dilla was a talent that would have found a way without Amp,
but we're all lucky Dilla had such a mentor. Detroit might not be unique
in how its network of mentoring & influence works but the results have been
staggering over the years. And it's a web that connects everyone alive &
working today back to Detroit's amazing past.

Amp was singular. I had a press pass the year he played the main stage
at DEMF so I watched him from close up, checking his hands on the keys
and how he interacted with thousands of people like they were friends
on his couch. I drove into Chicago to see him again a few months
later, and he was the same, but different. In both contexts, he read
the room and modulated his performance for the space and audience.

When I think of comparisons, Prince, Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo all come
to mind. But it's more like they're all drinking from the same well,
not that Amp was like them, in any imitative way. He was someone who
you can identify from just a few notes.

And it always seemed effortless, weightless. The funk flowed out of
him like his breath. That's how you can tell that someone is an
artist - they've mastered the mechanical demands of their music, to
where they don't have to think about playing. They're just there in
the music, and their goal is emotion and communication. The music is
a seamless part of themselves they can share.

When I think of Amp that's what I think of: his personality, his
humor, his emotional connection. I will miss him a lot.

It went pretty well, although I should have known I was fooling myself
when I said I'd limit it to half the class period. I'll do some more
research and see what the kids come back with on Wednesday. Then it's
winter break.

I'm actually gonna miss this batch a little bit (which I usually
don't, and I don't mean that in a nasty way but I'm fine with
renewal). But these kids are actually really good, they're all working
hard and going through it.

Thanks for the resources. As long as the department doesn't mind, I'll
be ending my Humanities classes on this note from now on. Maybe the
other professors will want to use this unit too, who knows.

Techno Rebels?

On a slight tangent, Jeremy Deller's "Everybody in the Place" is set in a
British classroom, where he is teaching British teenagers about the impact
of American dance music on Europe at the time. Obviously the context is
probably a bit different to what you would naturally seek out, and it does
drift away from 313, but the documentary itself is far better than the
cookie cutter talking head content we have in most of the better-known
examples. The teaching setting is also a great spectatorial model, and in
terms of the impact on the viewer, it's second-to-none IIMO. It's the best
reference I can think of for the impact of 313 and 312 as cultural exports.
It was made for the BBC, but you may be able to find it on YouTube or his
site (I haven't tried to unearth the links in case international
restrictions apply).

Re: Claude Young retirement!?!

2023-07-23 Thread kent williams
According to Claude's reply on Instagram, the article is crap. He's
stepping away from DJing and it sounds like he's focusing on composing
new music without regard to genre.

It's hard to overstate his reputation, especially in Japan and Europe.
He's got nothing left to prove, but I expect new surprises from him!

We've had 'Baby's got back', Fedde le Grand, Missy and now JPEGMAFIA. Was
listening to his new album this morning (still not sure if i like his music or
not) and heard "Are You Happy?" and i am sure i have heard those words before:
https://open.spotify.com/track/5zChKVq8kdnWWPbVWezFW8?si=b98c058bcaba4a3d
Don't know if it is a sample (i think so, slowed down) and/or if the words are
originally from UR or if the words came from somewhere else before, but nice to
see some Detroit influence and maybe one or two people listening to this
version seek out the original and end up checking the entire UR back catalogue.

My New album "Live Studies" (blatant self promo)

2023-05-08 Thread kent williams
I'm evolving a way to play live, completely improvised and I recorded
some rehearsals for a performance.

I don't really know how this will hit anyone besides me. It's
rhythmically free and shambolic, it uses live granular effects that
can radically rearrange what I'm playing and looping.

It's the most self-indulgent thing I've ever done insofar as releasing
an album on bandcamp. It might test your patience, it might lull you
into a trance, I really don't know.

PS I think this list is an excellent place to share your music,
particularly if it's techno or house or whatever but in so far as this

2022-12-23 Thread Mike Taylor
Hey all,

I thought this might be of interest:

"We humbly request your offerings & donations to support Detroit's own
international ambassador of funk, soul & electronic music, keyboardist,
record producer, Afro-futurist, AMP FIDDLER.

After many months in the hospital, and now at home recuperating from
surgery in August, Amp needs our resources to support his continued healing
as he journeys back to the stage.

Many have asked what is needed, or how they can assist. Your loving
generosity is appreciated at this time."

Tom Churchill

2022-12-19 Thread Mike Taylor
Hey all,

I stumbled upon Tom Churchill's YouTube channel a couple of weeks back. He
used to be a fairly regular poster to the list years ago.

He has been working in Eurorack and is doing some of the
deepest/tasteful/musical production that I've seen in that format.

It's worth checking out for the music, but also because he provides very
thoughtful explanations of his tools and working process.

It's clear that he is a really bright and talented guy.

I've asked about this since back then and I've never gotten anything but
evasive answers from anyone I've ever asked for over 30 years.

I watched NDS every single day as a latchkey kid and I still don't know who
he was or what he looked like.

The only rumor I've heard is that he passed relatively young in the 90's.

I've also wondered if he wasn't actually a person but a pseudonym of
whoever happened to be hired by the show to produce DJ mixes at a
particular time. I starting going out around 95 and I don't remember ever
seeing him or seeing the name on an actual flier.

He's probably the last great mystery of Detroit dance music.

I released 2 albums on Bandcamp Friday this month.

The first was released by Component Recordings:
https://componentrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/chaircrusher-music-for-upholstery

The second I self-released:
https://chaircrusher.bandcamp.com/album/daddy-or-chips

The Component album has been in the works a couple of months. The
self-released one came about partly to get in on the Bandcamp Friday
release schedule, and partly because releasing 2 albums in one day is a
stunt.

Both albums are me on my bullshit. Mostly ambient, occasionally beats,
based around a lot of distressed field recordings and shortwave radio
sampling.

about:
This EP was due to be released as a small edition of lathe cuts & CD-r's
+ extra stuff , but due to various delays and complications with the
cutting machine we decided to release it as a free EP for your own
enjoyment.

We love to share music and we hope you will have fun listening to this
release.

We are 3 dudes from Quebec city and we met thru music and became
friends. Even thought we live in the same province / area it does not
mean we see each other all the time or hang out. We mostly speak on
internet... therefore one the reasons that made me decide of the title
(which translate from French to English to something like) ''he/we are
there but not there'' ...

Good stuff, as per usually. More straightahead and less hazy than your
stuff usually.

"About 11824" is dubby but focused and lush. It reminds me of Mike Huckaby
a bit.

Re: Knight Rider

I've listened to this a lot and think it's ace! I've known Tristan for
almost a quarter century and followed what he's been doing musically since
he first started trying to do it. It's gratifying to see what he's doing
now.

I will forever be indebted to Tristan for playing Coil "NASA ARAB" on the
radio. I first heard it (from an over-the-air cassette recording) driving
on a county road in a thunderstorm, and only just kept the car between the
ditches.

(back story, I live in Iowa City, where Tristan went to school, before
reverting back to being a Brit)

New release on Apartment Records: Being - "There"

2022-09-12 Thread kent williams
For fans of Detroit Escalator Company and other Detroit producers'
excursions in to ambient music.

This was "buy on sight" since it's on Kenny Hanlon's Dublin-based Apartment
Records. It's not specifically Detroit Techno but it's close enough for
the people who've stuck around on the 313 list.

The back story is pretty great. From Kenny's Facebook post " Apartment
recently released a new album on tape / digi of previously unheard music
from Scotland's Being (aka Wee djs) called "There". Abstract acidic techno
recorded to tape 92-95, released to tape in 2022."

Re: RIP Techno Tourist & Electro producer Wibo Lammerts

2022-09-08 Thread Peter Wohelski
Late to this, but had heard about his passing through friends on other
social platforms.

Great guy, didn't know him well but was a big part of the 313 list in its
earliest years.

I echo Kevin's sentiments and miss the sense of community that mailing
lists like this provided years ago. Not to shake my old man techno cane at
the sky, but I feel like years of social media algorithmic engineering has
stripped that away. Or maybe I'm out of touch.

Anyway, long live Wibo. Aging sucks.

Cheers from Denver,
Peter

Le Morte D'Abby is aware of techno, no doubt, but I think he got to that
almost-Knights-Of-The-Jaguar sound on that song without actually hearing
Rolando.

There's a 'Detroit Sound' but it's composed of things that aren't unique to
techno. You hears echoes of it from people with no great knowledge of
techno.

The most direct ancestor of that Detroit melodic techno sound is jazz. And
there's a direct line from the legit jazz players that made up the Motown
house sound to guys like Mad Mike and Amp Fiddler. The "Strings Of Life"
sound came directly from Michael James recording MIDI of his live playing
and it's really jazz changes.

I've been reading the excellent J Dilla biography "Dilla Time" by Dan
Charnas, and it really underlines the interconnectedness of Detroit music.
Amp Fiddler was Dilla's mentor early on, and there's mentions of how much
techno & ghettotech were in the air as J grew up. Dilla's dad Dewitt Yancey
was a jazz bassist, and J grew up hearing his parents play jazz every day.

2022-08-18 Thread Ronny Pries
I picked this up almost week ago now. To me, he belonged to the circle of names
I mostly bumped into again and again online. Throughout the last decades. Of
course, I also heard a few of his releases. But I didn't know him personally.

And yet, it keeps circling in my system. Beyond my thoughts revolving around
his family.

Maybe along the lines of what Kevin wrote earlier. About all the things we
didn't tell each other when we could.

I also wonder how content Wibo was with his artistic journey. If he found what
he was looking for within. If he, deep inside, was satisfied with how he was
perceived as a 'creative'.

If that's even a possible thing to achieve for anyone.

Thank you all for somehow being part of my journey for all these years. For the
insights into a different world, culture, its struggle, its fruits, delivering
a sense of space and place. Also for the discussions, the clash of opinions,
for just being humans.

I think we know nothing. And that, especially in the dawn of AI, it's our duty
to figure out more frugal ways of communication. To get a better understanding
about the human condition, the creative drive, the value of communication
through creative work and all that.

And I hope this runs in Wibo's spirit.
