Marc Riley traces the career of Kraftwerk, whose 1970s electronic
music owed more to the experimental German classical compositions of
Karlheinz Stockhausen than to any pop tradition. They were part of a
new generation of young West Germans, living in the shadow of the
Cold War, who identified with the need to recapture a German cultural
identity distinct from that of Britain and America.

Thanks for that guys, sounds amazing.

Re the long reverb thing, the water reservoir in Cologne had a 45
second reverb as well and the producer of Vor Der Flut writes that
the 'intensity is due to the extremely hard, water-impermeable
coating on the walls and pillars, which stops the sound from being
absorbed, reflecting it with almost no loss intensity.' Looks like
the Deep Listening collaboration experienced something quite similar.

These gongs fascinated me recently when I went to Kassel for the

It was written and arranged to be played in an underground grain

composer. Basically, the concept was a number of horn players
arranged in a circle around the
perimeter of the circular silo, with the conductor in the centre.
Each musician would perform
short stabs such that the echo within the chamber (which could be

allow them to build layers of sound.

On the british tip, any MC that tries to sound American is as weak as
almost all Americans who try to make Drum and Bass. People I have
respect for -- like the Streets, and Goldie Lookin Chains -- aren't
even trying to make real hip hop: they're doing something uniquely
British. They don't hit me in the heart like the best American hip
hop, but they sound like themselves, not like they spent their youths
in a pub listening to Biggie on their walkman, fantasizing about
walking the mean streets of NYC.

I'm very picky about hip hop as well. When it's on, it's
Shakespeare-caliber word play backed by beats that make you want to
cry. When it's not, well, it's like 99% of all musical culture --
crap.

Thus manifesting itself into an entirely original amalgamation of
music and
sounds. His latest release, the critically acclaimed, ‘Plat du
Jour’ was created
over a period of 18 months, and consisted of 30,000 chickens, 3,255
people
biting on an apple, and a cheiftan mk 10 battle tank – to list just
a few of the

ingredients making up this epic release.

So what has Matthew in store for us now….? To be honest I don’t
think anyone
will know until his new record is released, but for one of the up
and coming
tracks on this yet, untitled album, he requires your assistance.
Yes. You!

At the !K7 office we have installed a separate phone line, the
‘Herbert
Hotline’, if you will. Unfortunately there’s no-one at the other
end to pick it
up, just an answering machine. Your task, should you choose to
accept it, is to
call this number and leave a message consisting of a single sound.
It could be
organic, vocal, mechanical, natural – even bodily. Remember you’re
dealing with
a man who has created music from the recording of coffee cups and
sewer systems,
so the more original the better. These sounds will be collected on
the answering
machine and past on to the grand, musical conductor himself, who
will fuse the
sounds together to create a grand musical cacophony that only he
knows will

sound like.

To add extra intrigue to this task you must under no circumstances
state, or
give any indication as to what the sound is. Should you believe
that your
contribution is worthy enough of credit and acknowledgement then
you should
email us ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), and your musical contribution will be duly
noted.

So go on, give the ‘Herbert Hotline’ a ring…..

I can agree only partially with that Alex.
Because music that's seen as 'popular' gets used for ads,
documentaries, in shops, restaurants... While I couldn't
give two f**ks either what everyone else _wants_ to
listen to, it has an influence on what I'm being _made_
to listen to, whether I want to or not.
I find it really difficult to buy clothes or shoes these
days because the music most of these shops pump
out is utterly appalling. I wish they would at least turn
the volume down. As it is, I usually turn around and
head for the exit after about 30secs They lose my
custom - but I need a pair of new jeans dammit!
Record shops should sell more clothes, not just
t-shirts! ; )

The problem Lost must confront now of course, is that many of us punters
and the generation of DJs we grew up with, are getting on. We won't be
able
prop Lost up forever (sooner or later most of us succumb to the wife/kids
syndrome - I said syndrome! ;-). Or at least, corporate/career life starts
to make more and more demands on our time, or some other type of
responsibility does. Nor will the same thing which kept us up all night
necessarily
keep doing that for a crowd which might visit the institution in 5 years
time, let alone ten years time. Obviously, fresh blood and new ideas are
becoming imperative. Till then, I can't say I won't be back there soon
because I
know I will. And I'll enjoy it most likely.

Another one I thought of on the way home is
La cite des enfants perdu (The city of the lost children).

And just for the record, I meant Tarkovsky's Solaris earlier.
Don't even know the rehash.

Das Boot got mentioned earlier as well. Anyone who hasn't
seen it, do get the series and not the movie. Loads better,
as Sakke (I think) said. And watch it in German if you can.
So much gets lost in the dubbed version.

Hmmm I always thought he was in Scotland? Interesting. Love to hear
more of his style, I love synthetic on that 2 tracker 12-inch on 430

The original is quite electro, which I like, whereas the 2 remixes are
a lot more dance-floor orientated, more Techno if you like. I prefer
the (long) Genotype remix, it's rougher, darker than the Human Code
remix. That's not bad either but a tad too slick I find. But that's

pretty messy. We all have these nights though...

Plus there were problems with one of the decks I think, which
certainly didn't help. From what he said to me later, he wasn't
very satisfied himself with his set - but I still enjoyed it. : )

b) 'Drexciyan DJ Stingray'?!

Drexciyan DJ Stingray was tight, but hearing tracks like M4 and M5
played at

45 ruins them for me.

From what I heard, he always plays everything so fast. B

Public Enemy was fantastic. Haven't lost a step, and *everyone* was
getting

down. You could tell they were having a great time, and it was really
infectious.

Absolutely! Even for someone like me who's not really
into HipHop - I totally enjoyed their show.

Bola (apparently didn't show) but the visuals while they played some
of his
music (I think) were mind-blowing. Someone else may be able to fill in
gaps

about this.

Yes, it was Bola's music they were showing those great visuals to.
He didn't come to ATP because he'd had a baby daughter 2 weeks
earlier - congratulations! : )
This was one of the highlights for me. Definitely have to pick up
some of his stuff!

Checked Jim O'Rourke for about 15 minutes. Nice pure ambience (i.e. no
discernable beat). Not suiting my mood. Head back for more
Stasis/Kev/Whatever.

Jim O'Rourke was very very good. Just the thing for me on the
Sunday afternoon. A bit abrasive at times but always keeping
it interesting. I simply stood there with my eyes closed

Coil (probably my most anticipated show) - really long set-up process
(like
45 minutes). Really weird experimental vocally stuff with 3 Nords?!?
Cool

stuff. Not right for the moment.

And staying on for Coil after that was the right choice, too. : )

Mustn't forget to mention SND, who played before O'Rourke.
A very short 45-minute set of which I managed to miss the
first 25mins dammit. Great minimal clicky-cutty stuff yet very
cohesive and even melodic in places.
Dug out their album Tender Love (on Mille Plateaux) today,
totally forgotten that I have that *doh*, and I can really
recommend it.

G-Man: played for about 20 minutes of his live set and some assbag
pulled
the fire alarm (or maybe it was a real fire???) - no one seemed to
know for

sure. Retreated to chalet.

I'm sure it was a false alarm. There's always one idiot who seems
to think this kinda thing is very funny. Real shame about G-Man's
live set, it had started off very promising.

Returned just in time for the beginning of Mark Broom. I danced
non-stop.
Always an excellent DJ - throwing in just enough bangers and just
enough
depth to keep it constantly interesting. It is true that we are
spoiled for

choice in London.

Surgeon: Holy crap! This was a proper Final Scratch workout. It wasn't
the
best DJ set I've ever seen, but I've never seen another set like it.
He went
everywhere seamlessly, and directed the pace with a mastery that's
only been

equalled, not surpassed.

Nothing more to add to this really. Mark Broom was a tad too
banging but at that time it was just what I needed. Rah!
And Surgeon's set was truly perfect. 'nuff said.

Tom, how did your live thang in Glasgow go? : )

On Friday at the same venue is Clone night and Haywire Sessions:

Clone Records Room featuring: Bangkok Impact (live) - ('Traveller'
Album Launch) Legowelt (live) and the Haywire Sessions.

ALL ROOMS: 8pm - 2am £8.50 in advance
Bangkok Impact fly in from Finland to launch exciting debut album
'Traveller' with a LIVE set of enough New York disco, big leading
basslines, warm synths and funky disco percussion to set the house on
fire!! (Think Daft Punk, Metro Area, Kraftwerk) Legowelt visits from
The Hague to play a LIVE set of slam jack electrodiscotech /soulful
deep chicago house/ghetto jazzfunk; the Hague Electro-nix and lots more
from the highly regarded We still Kill the Old Way! series.
Meanwhile the legendary Haywire Sessions in the form of Radioactive Man
(aka Keith Tenniswood and one part of Andrew Weatherall's Two Lone
Swordsmen), DMX Krew (Rephlex), and star DJ Mat Carter (Slump,
Checkpoint Charlie and infamous Dedbeat Weekender) promise between them
enough killer dirty electro, f***ed up beats, driving basslines,
breaks, dub and disco dance floor stormers. to keep the dancefloor
frenzy alive and rockin.
Dj Van Gogh (EYOE) joined by Vice Magazine djs makes his usual

That's not quite what the 93 Feet East website says: (but I guess they
havent really been reading all the definitions of what Techno is ...)
 Quote
If electronic music at the end of the century represents the confluence of
different styles, sounds, and beats from around the globe, few acts embody
that spirit of musical convergence like BOOM BOOM SATELLITES. Head-swirling
rhythms, intense break-beats, classic hip-hop scratching, driving rock
guitar, kinetic drum 'n' bass, and pulsing keyboard melodies. SONA FARIQ are
fresh from recording new tracks with Primal Scream's production team Brenden
Lynch and Jagz Kooner. A joy of punk, dub shamanic fury and memorably
crafted songs that continue to devastate audiences wherever they play. This
is an opportunity to catch them up close and personal before they move onto
the bigger stages. GEAR. Teenage quartet, think early Jam with Weller 'esque
 conviction and delivery.

 Maybe see you there .

(313) vivisector @rfh/london.

2003-02-18 Thread Anya Stang
Sorry guys, more kinda ot stuff from me...
but this looks to be quite fascinating.
http://www.rfh.org.uk/main/series/88.html?section=dancefile=indexmonth=week=
Anyone ever heard of Haring/Obermaier or D.A.V.E. (see copypaste below)?
And did you know about the Matthew Herbert Big Band? : )
http://www.rfh.org.uk/main/events/83506.html?section=contemporaryfile=index

Thanks,

Anya

To what extent does the quality of movement of the virtual
world influence real sequences of human movement? Will the
real world of the 21st century assume attributes of the
virtual world? Are there still significant differences
between a body that is made of synthetic material and warmed
artificially and the deep glow of trillions of living cells?

Based on the video-technological concept of moving body
projection that made Obermaier and Haring's earlier work
D.A.V.E. an international hit, Vivisector goes one step
further: the exclusive concentration on video light and
video projection that produces a new stage aesthetic in
which light, body, video and acoustic space form an
unprecedented unity. Vivisector challenges audience
perceptions in an examination of the possibilities for
digital decomposition of movement, blurring the 4
performers' solid coporeality and decomposing them to
their genetic blueprints.

Breathtaking; seems to set gravity out of order. Sound,
dance and video merge in a tightrope walk between reality
and virtuality.
