I think that the Jak is Bak party was later - maybe 96.

I saw Hawtin at the Packard plant in early 95 or late 94 or so and while I
don't remember it that well it doesn't sound like the party you are
describing. It was after this party that he had the immigration problems
and when they finally let him back into the country was when Jak is Bak
happened, if I remember correctly.

I think that he had his own remix of it... Again cloudy memories of the
time but I remember their being some sort of extremely limited or bootleg
remix of Spastik that everyone was looking for...

There are whole years of my life that I just totally can't remember...

Point of reference for those to ed up to remember: the dj booth was in
the middle of a HUGE room with the usual Plus8-style netting, surrounding
him. (large chill room with the Switch poster on the wall penis-pump)

Anyone??

slow down my set just to fit it in. i love spastik.

Just got this and thought I would pass it along for the Toronto peeps.

ben

Just a reminder that this Friday November 8th is the next major Fukhouse
instalment at System Soundbar here in Toronto.

Thanks to everyone who came last time and we think this event will be even
better than the last!

We're quite pleased to present the major Transmat recording artist so loved
by Derrick May that he signed him up for a full album on one listen, Aril
Brikha (Sweden). Aril headlined the Detroit Electronic Music Festival a few
years back and will be performing LIVE starting at midnight exactly. Also
headlining is funky techno turntable wizard Christian Smith (also from
Sweden coincidently, although now living in New York)! Here's the full
line-up!

:::Aril Brikha LIVE:::
starting @ midnight!
:::Christian Smith:::
:::Jeremy P. Caulfield, LIVE Performance:::
(of some of his brand new material and then merging into one of his main
room epic DJ sets he became known for at the original Fukhouse at Industry)
:::The Dukes:::
:::Duplex 100:::
(Minimal Dancin' Paris France - Deep Minimal House Techno)
:::Eric Downer:::
:::Odd Myth (Todd Smith from Guelph ON):::
:::Ian Guthrie:::

We've got two rooms, the main System room and a full on Minimal Funk room at
the side of the club in the enclosed room (sometimes called the VIP room,
but not tonight). Expect Fukhouse decor and attention to detail and System's
wicked sound system tuned to perfection.

Check out the website for more information, the full flyer and music clips
www.fukhouse.ca

System Soundbar is located at 117 Peter Street @ the corner of Richmond and
Peter.

$20 before 12:00.

Thanks!

yeah! what the hell happened to Tricky? why is it that each successive album
is worst than the last?? the first album was an incredibly beautiful work of
art, then it was all down hill afterwards. I swore off buying anymore Tricky
albums after that Pre-Millennium fiasco, but then someone bought me
Angles With Dirty Faces for my birthday after assuming I *must* like him
'cuz I have 2 of his albums in my collection. It was the same way with
Erasure and Depeche Mode. After I'd long since gotten bored with them people
kept buying Erasure and Depeche Mode albums for me since I had so much of
their stuff in my collection already :^(

the other week i picked up the new planet e double. its got a track buy
 Titonton thats tight.
I was just wondering what other tracks people like from him. hes got some
stuff on Residual and a double called Voyeurism (i think).
One day i overheard kent williams talking about how Titonton was more of a
composer and was taught music theory.
i havent seen his new cd yet. is it something thats going to be pressed
on
 wax.
 can anyone add to this.

Ryan,

I think you'd really like some of his earlier stuff if you can find it. I
have an EP on 21/22 corp that has an excellent track by him as CrO2. That's
long out of print though. His Of the Essence on Metamorphik is more
recent, but great too. These two tracks are towards the end of my New and
Old and Bang mixes on my site if you're interested in hearing them.

For me, I'm kind of hit or miss with his releases. Some of it is a bit too
much along the lines of quirkier Dan Curtin. I tend to prefer his more
straight-forward work when I'm spinning, but it's all good to listen to. His
betalounge set has really made me curious about the new stuff. I'm sure it's
top notch.

I dont know about that. I enjoy pretty much all styles of dance music (bar
hard house, 2 step and really cheesy trance)...

the new digweed cd sounds pretty damn good imo. dark deep progressive
house...seems like he's taken a lot of NY influences..sounds like a uk
version of a tenaglia set..

some people hate it though...

Not that I'm in the market for drama, but I feel the need to get some
second
 opinions..

Has anyone heard the new John Digweed CD? I'm sure many people here think
he sucks, but I think some of his previously released stuff shows some
measure of talent. This CD is the most generic sound I've heard to date
from anyone and it seems the target audience is people who want to say
they
like electronic music but really don't.

 Anyone?

Exact definitions aside, check out the following hip hop
artists/releases:

Mix Master Mike - 'Anti-Theft Device' 2LP (Asphodel) 1998
killer fully-realised LP of instrumental hip hop, produced by Naut Humon,
taking the idea of turntablism beyond simple tricks and into advanced hip
hop expressionism (or something like that).

Dj Q-Bert - 'Wave Twisters' 2LP (Galactic Butt Hair) 1988
anything Mix Master Mike can do... i can do better, incredible hands-on
vinyl digital manipulation, like 'Anti-Theft Device' this is inspired
instrumental hip hop.

Company Flow - 'Little Johnny From the Hospital' (Rawkus) 1999
mental hip hop and sticky funk produced by El-P and Mr Len, the personality

and expression in this LP is amazing.

Push Button Objects - 'Trot' (off Schematic 003 12)
PBO - 'Non Existant (Gescom mix)' (off Chocolate Indust. 002 12) 1999
PBO - 'Yambooze' (off 'Deeper Concentration' comp, Oxygen Music) 1998
PBO - 'Nocturnal Advice' (off Skam 011 12)
Edgar Farinas has been producing some pretty interesting hip hop inspired
stuff for a couple of years, his earlier stuff was more on an electronic
IDM tip... while his newer stuff is moving towards a slightly more
conventional cut-up hip hop sound.

Quite a bit of music is being produced under the 'experimental/IDM' hip hop
banner at the moment... I like the above releases because they play with the

stylistic sounds and structure of hip hop, but still keep the tough edge and

street soul that most 'real' hip hop has.

what about Esham??? some of his stuff can be very techythat is of
course if you can get past all the evil lyrics =)
but as eminim's main influence i think he deserves more respect. he has
released over 20 albums in the 12 or so years he has been at it. there are
a couple of really good tracks on every album and to get all the good
tracks
would be impossible. but of course with all the stuff he has put out there
has got to be some crap too. there are some songs that are much less then
note worthy. if you can get past the raunch and filth and the evil words
then the beats and samples are all solid. he is my choice...
oh, and hes from detroit =)

From http://www.hyperreal.org/music/lists/313/

This list was set up by myself to be a forum for the ***discussion*** of
Detroit
techno artists or artists directly influenced by Detroit techno artists.
That said, it would be no great coincidence if the list followed the same
progression as techno music has. That is, just as the works of the
original
Detroiters has provided the framework on which much of techno music has
been
built upon so too should the stated purpose of the list serve as the basis
 for broader discussion.

If you cared to **discuss** the inner workings of your tracks and how they
are 313 related, then post
a link to the track being **discussed** that would be a whole different ball
game. Enticing people with
the track title and a small blurb about the general feel of the track (while
I generally believe that dubby chord stabs
have relevance I do not in general see the 313 association).

Since we are all going to get picky today please read K.J's post regarding
313 rules

I really enjoyed this CD. In my opinion, the music is stepped through
gingerly. Of course it is perfectly mixed, but Rick is definitely showcasing
the trax (no pun intended) and not his mixing skills. Lots of old school
songs that I had never heard before, but recognized the samples. I love
discovering where a sample originated!

Who knows something about this CD release on Strictly Hype/UC Music:
TRAX Classics Presents Rewind Rewind 1984: Chicago
A mix of mostly TRAX (Knuckles, Jefferson, Jackmaster, etc.) records by one

Is the material stepped through gingerly or stomped all over; leaving DJ
Rick's indelible footprint?
Lifted off CDs or filthy, grungy TRAX vinyl?

So I gathered a few friends around for a viewing last night. Widescreen TV
with the original silent version on DVD. Jeff Mills new soundtrack playing
over the sound system.

The music complements the movie very well. Unfortunately I of course didn't
have the recut version but it was still a good preview of the way it was
intended. There where times when the music did seem very tuned in, like the
moment where the workers are heading down the elevator to the tune of the
second track (my favorite atm).

I'd like to see the proper recut version. The uncut version is twice as long
as the CD so I wonder how much of the movie will be left. The uncut version
does drag a bit so some editing will be good.

Does anyone know if there will be any official release of the recut version
of the movie, in theatres or otherwise? Has it really only been screened
once?

Here's something to spark some much needed
critical analysis on this list: if you had to name the
fifty best AND most important electronic CD's of
the past 25-odd years, what would they be?
Here are my picks. I've been working on this for a
while; believe me, I have considered most albums
people are going to point out are absent. However,
I'd love to discuss why you think that record is important.
And yes, I do know Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson,
Black Dog, and some others are not on here, and I think
I can defend my decisions.

2000-08-25 Thread Benjamin Cuthbert (Merch)

State warns of meningitis risk
 ...OLE_Obj...
The state is warning of a meningitis risk stemming from a party in Mason
Count. The state Department of Community Health said today that a young
woman who attended a rave party near Hoags Lake in Mason County last weekend
has developed a potentially fatal form of meningitis. Officials said other
party-goers should get medical treatment right away.
The Department of Community Health said the woman has contracted
meningococcal meningitis. She appears to be recovering while hospitalized,
but has been unable to identify all people she potentially came in contact
with, the department said. The department recommended all people who
attended the party receive precautionary treatement for meningoccal
exposure.
The department said it was reported that the party involved much drinking
and sharing of a pacifier which had been dipped in the drug ecstasy. It
said it also appears there was a considerable amount of close contact
between the young woman and many of the other attendees at the party. And
those people may be at serious risk, it said.

RE: [313] Is it Acid Techno?

2000-05-10 Thread Benjamin Cuthbert (Merch)
It is definately trance, but it is a much harder more edgey version many
times based around 1 or 2 word samples. Labels such as ClusterF*ck and
Routemaster (home to artists like chris liberator and d.a.v.e. the drummer)
have coined to the term hard acid tecno to describe the sound, which I
think is appropriate. It is one of those situations in which you know it is
trance, but you just don't want to call it trance. :)

It is trance!

Just a harder version, call it hard trance or acid trance if you want.
It's the same old trance theme using harder more techno like sounds.
Just because they are using similar sounds/gear as other techno
producers doesn't make it techno IMHO.

2000-05-09 Thread Benjamin Cuthbert (Merch)
-The news reports are always sensationalistic and driven by ratings

I could not agree with you more, but in my opinion, news reports like these,
even though it was very sensational, can help to clean up this scene. This
scene has been going down the shitter the past few years. Parents need to
know where their 13-17 yr. olds are at night because they have no business
being at raves and getting fucked up. That is what is making the scene look
bad. I saw the news report last night and the main focus was on underage
kids and their secret life. They did not mention anything about what
happened to the people over 18.

So, what I want to know is why promoters do not set age limits on their
parties. Will it affect the bottom-line that much?

I am down with the cause and will sign the petition because there are two
sides to every story and raves are extremely stereotyped by the media. I
also believe, however, that there is some truth to every stereotype and that
the rave scene needs to except some responsibility and change. At this
moment in time, I cannot think of one positive thing that the media could
report on about raves.

PS - I also want to know why more people do not support the Detroit's club
scene more. While everyone was getting busted on Saturday, they missed an
excellent bust-free night at Science.

Hi all,

This last weekend in Detroit it was like 1515 Broadway all over again.
Mid-week there had been another one of those look where your children are
at on saturday night! reports on the news. Of course, it was just like
years ago - a promoter had called the news complaining of how they wanted to

clean up the scene. Then they rented a space that they thought was
bust-proof, and proceeded to throw a party with tight security and 500 free
tickets. It backfired in their face and of course the cops arrived with the
news in tow. Multiple kids were beaten on site by the Highland Park Police,
and the newspeople witnessed this but did not report it.

*sigh*

Either way, we want to at least have a chance to speak about the things that

make rave culture special to us. The news reports are always
sensationalistic and driven by ratings - this we grudgingly accept as the
way it is - but it would be nice to be heard at all, even within that
context. Please help us find a voice amongst all the yelling.

Thanks,

I understand your dilemma and the fact that you cannot get into most clubs
sucks. You are also very right in pointing out that it is maturity, not age
that should matter. Unfortunately, however, our society, as a whole, does
not agree with that. It deems that you are not an adult until you are 18 and
does not take into consideration your maturity. That is why the media is
jumping all over this, because ravers are getting younger and younger.

PS - I also went to the loft party. I never said I was immune to the bust (3
times), I try to choose my battles wisely. :)

alright i really would like to not get into this again but i guess i
will...i'm a 17 yr old white female from the suburbs sorry i happen to love
music...and sorry i can't get into clubs like having to listen to Adam Beyer

on the radio and not being able to be at Motor was not fun or staying home
for Carl Cox or any of those other amazing djs that I love just because I
guess when I'm 18 something will click over night and make me more mature or

whatever. I know most of my friends who are under 18 can spit out the whole

history of whatever genre they like and truly respect the whole idea of the
music and parties more than that 21 yr old sittin in the corner rubbing
vicks
all over them saying how cool the music sounds while rolling. Its more
about
maturity than an age. The reason why My friends and I continue going to
raves and not clubs some nights to see certain djs is the fact we just
aren't
allowed but the 21 yr old who slips ghb into girls drinks is acceptable.
The news here is totally making things seem what they are not. Yes alot
of
kids do go for drugs but alot of adults to also. If I had to sit around at a

high school house party I would probably do an insane amount of drugs but
once I go to a rave or actually get into a club I just don't see the need to

do drugs. Not all people under the age of 18 do drugs when they attend
parties and I guess I'm just sick of everyone saying I'm not welcome because

of my age. Yes I missed a bust free night at science but you also missed a
bust free loft party minus the rave bs like glowstix and shht and another
party that was also bust free. I don't understand why age upsets so many
people. Age ain't nothin but a number

There is no denying Sonic's knowledge of the scene and all things vinyl.
There is something to be said, however, of discovering that sick record on

best you can in a minute or two) and most, if not all, the records I order
will actually make it to my doorstep. Frankie Bones is sick, but that does
not mean we have the same taste in music.
