have it on tape lying around !-)
It was told by a london 'heroin' junk (could be sarah jones?) if I
rememeber correctly

Anyway The Vadim track starts with the piece bout the 'proto' rapper who
wrote the revolution will not be televised
forgot his name :( gill scot harris of something, maybe a male ?

But still fine lyrics

KBOO is a great radio station in portland..they just got a $7,000 fine for
broadcasting the lyrics below...in case you don't get it the lyrics are a
_protest_ to all the male posturing etc. that goes on in hiphop/rap
circles
(but is by no means limited to this genre) and yet instead of choosing one
of
the more openly misogynistic songs they chose a feminist criticism of them
as
 someone to silence
 -k

as a side note bell hooks has a nice essay on how it's been the hiphop/rap
artists who have been singled out for this behavior when it's really
behavior
 that's endemic..

Your revolution will not happen between these thighs
Your revolution will not happen between these thighs
Your revolution will not happen between these thighs
Will not happen between these thighs
Will not happen between these thighs
The real revolution ain't about bootie size
 The Versaces you buys

And though we've lost Biggie Smalls
 Maybe your notorious revolution
Will never allow you to lace no lyrical douche in my bush
Your revolution will not be you killing me softly with fujees
Your revolution ain't gonna knock me up without no ring
 And produce little future M.C.'s
Because that revolution will not happen between these thighs
Your revolution will not find me in the back seat of a jeep
With L.L. hard as hell, you know
Doing it and doing and doing it well, you know
Doing it and doing it and doing it well
Your revolution will not be you smacking it up, flipping it or rubbing it
 down
Nor will it take you downtown, or humping around
Because that revolution will not happen between these thighs
Your revolution will not have me singing
Ain't no nigger like the one I got
Your revolution will not be you sending me for no drip drip V.D. shot
Your revolution will not involve me or feeling your nature rise
 Or having you fantasize
Because that revolution will not happen between these thighs
No no not between these thighs
 Uh-uh
 My Jamaican brother
Your revolution will not make you feel boombastic, and really fantastic
And have you groping in the dark for that rubber wrapped in plastic
 Uh-uh
You will not be touching your lips to my triple dip of
French vanilla, butter pecan, chocolate deluxe
Or having Akinyele's dream, um hum
A six foot blow job machine, um hum
You wanna subjugate your Queen, uh-huh
Think I'm gonna put it in my mouth just because you
 Made a few bucks,
 Please brother please
Your revolution will not be me tossing my weave
And making me believe I'm some caviar eating ghetto
 Mafia clown
Or me giving up my behind
Just so I can get signed
And maybe have somebody else write my rhymes
 I'm Sarah Jones
 Not Foxy Brown
 You know I'm Sarah Jones
 Not Foxy Brown
 Your revolution makes me wonder
 Where could we go
If we could drop the empty pursuit of props and the ego
We'd revolt back to our roots
Use a little common sense on a quest to make love
De la soul, no pretense, but
Your revolution will not be you flexing your little sex and status
 To express what you feel
Your revolution will not happen between these thighs
Will not happen between these thighs
 Will not be you shaking
And me, [sigh] faking between these thighs
 Because the real revolution
That's right, I said the real revolution
You know, I'm talking about the revolution
 When it comes,
 It's gonna be real
 It's gonna be real
 It's gonna be real
 When it finally comes
 It's gonna be real

I just watched a really interesting interview with Laurent Garnier on The
New Music, a show on Toronto's City TV.

One of the questions he was asked was how he felt about artistic rights
and
the internet. He said that sometimes (he) feels raped and describes how
there are dj mixes of his online that he himself does not even own copies
of, and how it's somewhat unfair that people have access to stuff that
he's
spent years on (I'm paraphrasing a bit here, I couldn't find a tape to
 record it :( )

The transcripts aren't on the website yet, but should be soon:
 http://www.thenewmusic.net/

For the Canadian 313ers, the show is also on again this Monday at 9:30pm,
on
Muchmusic, although I'm not sure if it's this episode or a new one.

At this point I don't see the point of Daft Punk wearing the robot

there are countless photos of them sans masks. Plus, if I see one more
magazine with those robot masks I'm gunna rip it up. It's gotten tired and
old really fast. I first thought they were cool but then it seemed like
evry
magazine was using the same damn photo. Funny, that's kind of how I think
of
their new release too. Neat at first but then full of gimmicks and sounds
 the same after repeated visits.
Ooh, that kinda got off topic didn't it.

Back to the hidden identity thing...
I can appreciate not revealing your personal info (photo included). It
allows an artist to branch out into areas that could be considered wrong
by
your fans if your identity was known.
It adds to the mystique of the creator as well... Kraftwerk using dummies
made in their likeness. In a live performance it adds a bit of a spectacle
element. It also confuses the media machine...

Well if we look at acid house
it's the other way around.
(as house being 'everything will be oke')

I don't think time will devide techno from house
every music has something to do with past present future

for me techno must hold an 'electronic' sound
I don't think strings of life is techno.
'play' by jeniffer lopez holds more electronic sounds.

I don't think you sound ridiculous at all. I wrote an undergrad paper
back in 87 about this...and wish I still had it. To me house evokes
something spiritualand temporally speaking, something either present
or past in the literal and figurative sense.

The sound of techno itself represents an urban future to me. Not
necessarily a utopia, not necessarily a dystopia, but the future.
Depending on the individual track the emotion can be joyous (strings of
life), or contemplative (nude photo), but it is future oriented.

But I'd say my feelings on this are MINEI grew up on comic books,
science fiction, and visions of Africa. I KNOW my feelings about techno
as an artform have to have something to do with my appreciation for Frank
Herbert's DUNE, or for Octavia Butler.

It'd be interesting to know how others think about this

Re: [313] vinyl: not for me; but mp3 cds are.

2001-04-15 Thread DJ DMT
that's the point ! no weird interference
(or even better : the right interference)
It's the same when you hold a mic close to the speaker
(you'll get a feedback loop)
Also that's the same with bootlegging from vinyl
I've seen a lot of speakers wobble with little to no bass in the track
(but there are many factors that could create that)

But if a track is mastered right (and played on a good setup and system) it
will let the solid kick or bass
be redirected back to the needle, creating a massive solid bass.

But you're also right about isolating your sl's
I have played on numerous 'spring' isolated tabel setups
and although I hate the unsteady sl's
I love the solid sound it produces.
(and raises the dynamics of a record and creating a major different than
played from Dat or live :-)

Anybody heard those jimmy jams breaks ?? that's rock solid !
finest mastering I've heard ever !

this would most likely, in effect, damp the resonances. in other words,
making sure the table is very heavy would most likely damp a lot of the
vibrations (although the bricks most likely would transmit a lot of it).

i say isolate the table as well as possible. while a trick like that
might
be cool nothing is worse than having a needle jump.

I can make a nice drawing of this but it's actually true
I've tried certain setups where it came clear to me that
resonace injected from the speakers react different to the needle through
 wood, metal or bricks.
just make shure that the table you place you're 1200's on is heavy with
 lot's and lots of bricks

But maybe you can tell me something about th'm different frequenties the

2001-04-13 Thread DJ DMT
I can make a nice drawing of this but it's actually true
I've tried certain setups where it came clear to me that
resonace injected from the speakers react different to the needle through
wood, metal or bricks.
just make shure that the table you place you're 1200's on is heavy with
lot's and lots of bricks

But maybe you can tell me something about th'm different frequenties the
quartz resonates to ?

And most funny part is the quality
I love claps the in realaudio format
I don't know why but even the 'to polished' tracks tend to sound a bit
gritty and compressed.
I've also heard a lot of mp3 's recordings of 12 inches and they may differ
a lot !
I also love the visuel feedback in the eq in winamp
a real nice welcome tool on mastering and dynamic control
can also make a track nice and gritty

True, vinyl -- or at least new vinyl -- has higher audio dynamics
than CD, but then these enhancements can only be realized with a
proper (and more importantly, properly _tuned_) PA. Any other
differences between vinyl and CD are due to mastering; processes
which in turn can be encoded to a higher bit and frequency digitization
  and saved as files.

I think alot of the quality of the audio goes out the window after digital
quantizantion. they say it's an exacte replicas but I don't see how it can
be. particular in the lower bit rates. the high end jest become swishy or
staccato like. I think it's due to the fact the digital picture is very
thin
in the 16k and up. (but most people can not hear above 18k as an adult
anyways) as with analog vinyl the signal never stops. but I don't want to
start a dig/analog debate I sure that it has been play out on this list
in
 the past.

now I do know that older vinyl the highest frequency is 16.kHz 17 if the
engineer is good. but in the 80's they had some more break through in
riaa's
curve for mastering vinyl to get a better bass response and I think they
also boosted the high end up to around 18khz or 19khz? but I don't
remember
the audio class I had were we talked about this we pretty boring and I
sometime drifted off to the innerzone.

and as for mp3's the sound quality is not very good at all. unless you
encode at a high bit rate and then whats the point there huge but I really
don't want to go into my dislike of the audio qualities of mp3's. that
debate has been played out here.

I think this industry - and the public - tends to occasionally assume that
creative work has less fiscal value than 'real' work. I see this every day
and cop it myself. So think about it.

Would you work in your job and forfeit your wage?

Here are some industry case scenarios not unlike Napster:

 (1) Photographers often don't get credited - and I know magazines that
freely lift images from other magazines without approval of the
photographer, let alone paying them. This is only OK if it's a promo
image -
in which case the photographer has been paid by a record company/promoter
and there is an understanding or arrangement that it can be freely used
for
 media purposes.

 (2) I know some publishers balk when I ask them about rates - several
glossy
mags in Australia have a policy of not paying their writers or pay them so
little it's not worth it - most freelance writers get paid way, way less
than a minimal wage. This is crazy, as the publishers would not consider
not
paying the accountants, for example, or the printer. There is still labour
involved and an outlay. I'm not mercenary, I do a lot of work for free but
I
 need to pay my bills.

 (3) Same with artists, DJs - esp up and coming or smaller names.

The number of even big name artists who never get paid is ridiculous! I am
sure Louis is fighting for a principle.

It is not a privilege, it's a basic human right. Just because it is a
'creative' form of work does not mean there isn't time and labour
involved -
so go for it Louis. Also artists/photographers/writers are self-emplyed
often - freelance, so they have no emplyer to pay their
 insurance/superannuation/sick pay/holiday pay/etc. They need an income,
right? Sometimes the pay recording artists/photographers/writers get is
barely enough to cover the outlay let alone plan a future!! Remember
Talking
Heads got just a couple of dollars in royalties foir their seminal albums!
It was only when Mariah Carey sampled a Tom Tom Club track for Fantasy
that
at least a couple of members got some money in via publishing to invest in
 another recording project.

The market obviously determines the value - if no one likes it, no one
buys
it. Simple but why should people have to give their stuff away for free?

I am not against Napster but I think the artists should have a say if they
don't want their music on there. It's a pity that Metallica were so
bullheaded and attacked users but fundamentally I can see the argument.

Privilege, not right. Art, like most other forms of intellectual
property, has subjective quality and value. What right does someone
have to receive compensation for something of no value?

The Mr. Bongo label (affiliated with the London record store of the same

 err, no i don't.

That's your right. God Bless America !

see, that's the whole thing about opinions. each person's is as valid as
the next, be they innovator, inventor, or first-time listener.

Ever been to a movie you didn't like? Better yet, ever seen a movie
billed as innovative or a classic that you didn't like?

 Blair Witch filled that bill.

I highly doubt you've directed a feature-length motion picutre which has
 recieved
national distribution. Yet I bet you'd feel free (as a bird) to voice your
opinion if you thought a movie was crap.

Well, the thing is, not only did I major in Radio-TV-Film at Wayne State,
a
classmate of mine from those days is now a film professor at USC (and had
a
co-writing credit on the film The Wood as well as a cameo) and my best
friend in LA is a screenwriter and former assistant to John Singleton
(Boyz
N The Hood). That same friend has been telling me for years I should come

out to LA and storyboard (because *snicker* I can draw too). Plus, I'm a
published writer (Mixer, Psycomic.com). Not film criticism, granted, but I
could probably do that too if given the chance. Plus I used to know Elvis
Mitchell (New York Times or The Voice film critic, can't remember which)
when
he lived in Detroit ! We got our comics from the same place. Great analogy
!
 Next.

The whole idea of having to pay some sort of unattainable dues before
you're entitled to voice any sort of criticism is ridiculous. You may be
 ALAN OLDHAM,

 You're damn right I am. HA !

but your position as a figure of some importance in the
 detroit scene

Hmmm, the jury's still out, there ! I think Sean Deason is more important
than I am. He played DEMF =)

doesn't place your opinion above any of ours. if you'd like
to start a dialogue where we discuss Jeff Mills's current performances in
relation to his past works, I'll be more than glad to participate. But
hovering in the background and coming out to tell us all to shut up just
 doesn't work.

Sure it does. Are you out here doing better mixes than Jeff ? Making
better
records ? The whole idea of this thing is DIY. Anyway, if folks can get on
here and criticize, then I can critique the critics. A vicious cycle, but
then, this is a free country. Supposedly.

Aside: I have been working my a** off in the studio and DJing, and my GF
has
been fwd'ing me posts from 313 and it's been so interesting I decided to
resub for awhile. Aren't you glad ? Blame her !

AND to the person who asked what lock-groove, loop (aka bangin) techno
is,
the first record ever with lock grooves was Jeff Mills Cycle 30 on Axis.
This release and others from Mills (Live at the Liquid Room, Waveform
Transmissions) single-handedly inspired the entire early sound of British
and Swedish Techno (Surgeon, Regis, Oliver Ho, James Ruskin, Marco Carola,
 Adam Beyer, etc.)

AND, Misstress Barbara banged the living s*** out of Motor tonight.

AND, I got to hang out briefly with my hero, the genius of modern music,

  I agree...
There are alot of older tracks that I rarely play anymore because they
are
only 135BPM at +8, and I usually play faster than that.
  For instance: anything on +8
Spastik by plastikman
Anything by woddy McBride (incl. Basketball heroes)
Most Metroplex records

So i could see the need for pitched up tables. Besides, pitching up
 tables
doesn't break them. There's always a means to change them back to their
  original state.

but dont you find it incredibly annoying when playing in a club and
finding
one deck pitched right up and the other one either on normal pitch, or
even
 pitched down?

i dont know about you guys but this REALLY gets to me - doesnt matter if
they are pitched up, but someone could at least check they are at similar
 speed!

Where do many newcomers learn to spin? I'd say from listening to
mix CDs which are usually made to shift product which means they let the
entire song play out and use computer programs to mix. Only recently has
there been a fair amount of CDs that have the live sound (short mixes,
spinbacks, hard cuts, mixes that aren't seamless)

How about going to hear professional DJs ?

 Very nicely stated.

Art in all forms is about expression.

Moods emotions that an artform creates are different in each
 individual.

Regardless of what the means are that are used to reach the musical
end.
what is created is what matters. (plagerisism aside) technological
advancement is not the problem. The problem starts when quality and
authentisity are compromised for laziness and lack of skill.IMO

 Hey

I'm a big techno fan but have been off the scene for a couple years now
and
slowly getting back into it. My first of many questions is does anybody
know
what Steffan Robbers is up to these days, and can you recommend some
recent
 releases from him.

 Thanks and all that

 Paul

Actually i am speaking from much experience. I had to get out of that
pathetic scene because it greatly offended me to see so many people only
able to enjoy the music (the music which has changed my life
significantly)
when under the influence of drugs.
I dont feel that drugs are a necessarily bad
thing when done in careful moderation.
But going to a rave and watching kevin saunderson THROW DOWN while the
majority of the other people are too f*cked up to even comprehend or
question the talent they are seeing/hearing does not create a good
 atmosphere IMHO.

Got to say I'm highly impressed with the new

strings and distant blended vox - don't miss!

On the special planet : E trip go find a mp3 of carl carig at fuse 16-7-2000
if you like carls (old) work you def. love to hear what he spins !!!

 Thomas Schumacher's new album, Electric
Avenue, is also really cool. So many different
styles. Ok some of them not to everyone's (or
my own) taste, but it's not often you hear this
much variety on a techno album. I like!

If it has 'good life' on it, it doesn't automatic make it a good album !)
Oke joke

Lastly, can anyone ID this track from a DJ Hell
set - vocal says north side boom, south side
boom, east side boom, west side boom (no
 laughing there Anya!!)

 DJ DMT,
I'm assuming you run the video from a PC, while the video has been made on
a
MAC, so if you have not a proper convertisor, do not say that the sound is
 weak.
The quicktime version which comes with the CD is a trial version and
allows
you to view the video, but this version doesn't authorize you to have the
 real song.
So no, there is nothing wrong with the sound, but rather with your
material.

 SPECIAL INVITED GUEST

doesn't that mean they would only had to attend the party or to spin ?

not only that, but maybe some of the fans who came out to see Terrence
 or
Jeff spin would be VERY sorely disappointed if they didn't, with all
 respect
to the other DJ's (who are very, very good). and maybe the fans might
 get
VERY mad with Terrence and Jeff for pulling a 'no-show' to an event
they
   never agreed to play?

   thanks for resolving this civilly.

Subject: [313] Can Promoters DJs resolve their differences?
   Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 20:04:34 EST

   Greetings From TP!

I am sharing the following information with this list in hopes that
it
 will
create a basis for positive dialog / discussion of how we as DJs
   Promoters
work with each other to achieve the common goal of a banging party
with
 a
   REAL RIGHT vibe!
I especially hope that any aspiring / up-and-coming DJs and/or
 Promoters
 on
this list will take away something valuable which they can use.

Today Carl (the promoter behind the HOUSE EXPLOSION event) and I
spoke
regarding the controversy centered on the flyer for the HOUSE
EXPLOSION
   2000
event. This morning I sent an e-mail to which he responded by phone
and
agreed to ALL of my demands to resolve this issue of the improper use
 of
 my
   name.

Today I received 11 e-mail letters from cats who see nothing wrong
with
 a
person's name being listed on a flyer as a SPECIAL INVITED GUEST.
Furthermore, they asked why I was making such a big deal about it,
and
thought I should be honored by the invitation. Well, I was honored!
But
 how
fine is the honor if it is bitter sweet?
I understand that many of us on this list are in various countries
   throughout
the world where the laws governing such matters are different.
However,
   being
here in the USA, let me try to make my point by using an example . .
.
 .
 .

 . . . . LET'S SAY I DECIDED TO THROW A PARTY AT THE STATE THEATER
IN
   DETROIT
ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT. I THEN DRAFT A LETTER OF INVITATION TO MICHAEL
 JACKSON.
   I
THEN FAX THE LETTER TO MICHAEL JACKSON'S MANAGEMENT COMPANY. I NEVER
 GET
 A
RESPONSE FROM MICHAEL JACKSON, OR ANY OF HIS REPRESENTATIVES.
HOWEVER,
 I
   TAKE
IT UPON MYSELF TO MAKE FLYERS ADVERTISING MY CHRISTMAS PARTY AT THE
 STATE
THEATER WITH SPECIAL INVITED GUEST - MICHAEL JACKSON!

I ASK YOU, MY FRIENDS, HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WOULD TAKE BEFORE
 MICHAEL'S
LEGAL TEAM WOULD TAKE ACTION AGAINST ME? WOULD I BE WRONG TO
ADVERTISE
MICHAEL'S NAME AS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST? AFTER ALL, I DIDN'T SAY
THAT
 HE
WAS GOING TO PERFORM RIGHT? I DIDN'T EVEN SAY THAT HE WAS GOING TO BE
   THERE.
ALL I SAID WAS THAT HE WAS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST. IN FACT, I COULD
 PROVE
THAT I DID INDEED INVITE MR. JACKSON BY PRESENTING THE LETTER ALONG
 WITH
 A
COPY OF THE VERIFIED FAX TRANSMISSION TO MICHAEL'S MANAGEMENT WHICH
 STATES
THAT I AM INVITING HIM TO ATTEND MY EVENT. SO I ASK YOU GOOD PEOPLE,
IF
   MIKE,
NOR HIS PEOPLE RESPOND TO MY INVITATION, DO I HAVE THE RIGHT TO USE
HIS
   NAME
IN ANY MANNER (EVEN AS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST) IN PROMOTION OF MY
   EVENT?

WHY DID I MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS? BECAUSE I HAVE TO TAKE A
 STAND
   ON
WHAT I BELIEVE IS RIGHT, NOT ONLY BECAUSE IT AFFECTS ME, BUT BECAUSE
   SOMEDAY
(IF NOT TODAY) IT COULD AFFECT YOU!
MY POSITION WAS BASED UPON A PRINCIPLE WHICH IS PERSONAL TO ME, BUT
 COMMON
   TO
   ALL OF US.

FOR THE RECORD DELANO SMITH FELT AS I DID, AND ALSO EXPRESSED HIS
 CONCERN
OVER BEING LISTED ON THE FLYER. AS I UNDERSTAND IT,
HE TOO HAS RESOLVED HIS ISSUE WITH THE PROMOTER.

   Peace Respect,

   TP

I didn't mean to create a monster thread, and as I said my respect for
Mills is total. I was, back in the day, an English major, and spend
time
thinking about words, in addition to music, and I'm a fan of expressing
  yourself clearly and concisely.

To tell the truth my main concern is that Jeff has loads of extremely
interesting things to say, and he gets dogged over and over about the
stuff he writes. Obviously his strengths lie in non-verbal
communication,
and his attentions are NOT focused on Strunk White. I just think that
if someone at Axis would edit what he writes, his message would come
  across a lot better.

Nope nope nope, have to disagree here completely!

Liquidism is a great dark atmospheric album and the
 original Sensefiction album is awesome.

Personally I think Heiko is a great producer. Check
out his track on the Kanzleramt '5' comp - awesome
deep powerful techno. Bassline to die for. (and of
course there's the original release as well).

 Just my two cents! :)

Re: [313] re: Mayday mix of Jaguar/430 West UK

2000-10-25 Thread DJ DMT
To get back what The Duke man said
I think it's a good move

Besides Universal witch will do the U.R. rights* of for instance 'jaguar'
worldwide publishing is a must if you want to defend you work.

Since 95 % of all club/dance music is made for the english market it would
be a smart move ;)
and if I read a figure of 500.000 copies of a Aphex Twin album I know what
time it is
compared to 'dutch' standards where it is a unique thing when you sell
50.000 albums

anyway some short (non-313) mix reviews

1-2-3 Dj rush (look and see) Dj Zank mix
+
Repress of Mr Fingers - Distant planet on Trax
(reminds me of the Kevin Saunderson sound with those 2 oscillators de-tune
thingy )

probably more to do with the fact that
most people cant afford £7-9 it costs
for dished/warped u.s. vinyl these days.

and yes it defenitely does help our sales when
we can offer u.s techno at under £5.00, thus
giving the lable more also (but this is it
probably not cool / underground)

well then, I'd expect all UK labels to start a US division! After
all, I can't afford to pay $10.99 for an over-packaged, glossy
sleeved british record!

Re: [313] KMS 49 - what's that noise!??

2000-10-25 Thread DJ DMT
I heard a Dj Pierre record on Stricly Rhythem (wrong spelled)
witch has has the same sound

All I can say is ;?

 that is a reverse sample
second it's a filter over a chord or a bundle of tones like a stab of
trumpets ect. ?
instead of a filter over 1 sound/oscillator

A lot of ppz in the 313 area used this technology
check the 'fear of spiders' remix by kenny larkin on plink plonk.
(if anybody wants to know how he did it ;)
I know I know (sorry sorry mis quote from drexcia)
It can be done with for instance a k2000 sampling it own chords !!

this is tech house like it shout be ( not like theorem ect. )
that is my opinion ;?
but I'm still a copycat

And Kevin is cool for answering the questions on-site

Does anybody know where *that* synth sweep on Chez Damier's KMS49
(untitled,
but it goes Come on girl, you ain't dancing - the other side is the same
as the Climax, as an aside, where's that from?) comes from? Off the top of
my head it's also used by Grant Nelson (GOD project part 1) and the
Basement
Boys (250lbs of remix). I'm pretty sure I've got other tracks that sample
it, too. I don't which of these came first (I heard KMS 49 first, but that
means nothing) nor if any of these are the original source. But it is a
wicked noise and one of my favourite tracks, so I wiz wondering...

 Cheers,

 Jonny.

   of course i'm wondering when
Slam are going to release another album, and when they're going to
stop
 by
   in California!

Lifted this about Slam from the etronik website (www.etronik.com). Hope
it's what you want to hear.

Scottish producers Slam, aka Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle have been
speaking exclusively to etronik about their own release schedule as well
 as
their plan for their label, Soma. The duo, who have a new mix CD, 'Past
Lessons, Future Theories' available on Distinctive on October 30th, have
revealed that they are currently putting the finishing touches to their
second artist album, the follow up to 1996's acclaimed 'Headstates'
debut.
The as yet untitled work should be ready for release in March 2001. They
 duo
also intend to do a full live tour to support the work, taking in live
instrumentalists. Slam also said that albums from Californian producers
H-Foundation and Maas are expected next year while Slam have
collaborated
 on
a 120 bpm techno style thing with Mo'Wax boss James Lavelle to
celebrate
the label's one-hundredth release. Soma also release their seventh
compilation at the end of November, featuring tracks from Gene Farris,
 Percy
X, Pressure Funk and Silicone Soul.

I believe there may be a third Dimitri out there as
well, but it could be one of the aformentioned two
going as Dimitri. I have seen Super DJ Dimitri spin
twice, and I can't recommend it. The mixing is fine
but the track selection left something to be desired.
When I saw him in Seattle last he was spinning a lot
of west coast breaks. Blech! Other than that, I love
the music of Dee-Lite. You should have seen the crowd
go nuts when Boo Williams dropped Groove Is In the
Heart in Iowa City. I also love Dimitri from Paris'
music, but I've never heard him mix. The one person I
know who has was not impressed, but she has strange
 taste.

Anyway, I belive there to be a third Dimitri, who goes
by just Dimitri. He made an amazing album with Eric
Nouhan (sp?) four or five years ago. Some of you may
remember one of the songs from that was Folkloric
Acid as featured on the Carl Craig DJ Kicks Mix CD
[313 tie-in achieved!] on !K7. But there are also a
few latin house tracks on the album that absolutely
blow me away. The production styles are not too-far
removed from what either Deee-Lite or Dimitri from
Paris produce, but I still suspect it's another
Dimitri - I don't know why. It could possibly be
Dimtri from Paris before he became Dimitri from
Paris??? To stray even further from Deee-Lite, I
bought an Eric Nouhan 12 on Outlands (not sure if
that's the right name - the label with the cool
original art by Dara?) suspecting he might be the
brains behind the outfit and was pretty disapointed.
The best track was an electro/trancey thing that left
me suspecting Dimitri was the brains behind the
 outfit.

 problem
