take you 5 hours. If you're really going to make this a trip over

Definitely the Monterey Bay Acquarium and then Cannery Row (also in
Monterey)

Big Sur is gorgeous, as is Santa Cruz. have a beer (at least) along
the way @ nepenthebigsur.com

Stop at the Hog's Breath Inn in Carmel. used to be owned by Clint,
cool place. have a Dirty Harry burger.

silly name (until you look into where it came from), but the
ticklepinkinn.com in the Carmel highlands is great, if you have the
time and $$

(William Randolph) Hearst castle in San Simeon is pretty amazing.
worth the time to do the tour. Morrow bay is also gorgeous and a good
place to stop for a meal.

If you're into wine an easy way to see the notable wineries along the
central coast/Santa Barbara is to look up the Sideways (the movie)
wine tour.. after the movie, many folks mapped out the wineries
involved. you could spend a couple days doing this and it would be
well worth it. then stop and see old town Santa Barbara; go to the
Four Seasons-Biltmore Hotel in SB for some cush accommodations and
terrific scenery.

Great drive when you have the time..

So some friends were in town and wanted to go out and were excited

The five of us got there early and luckily avoided the $15

some renovations, I think a new sound system is on order. So this
was billed as a pre-renovation blowout bash. There were even 2-1
drinks till midnight...sounds pretty good right?

The unfortunate thing about it was everyone who spun sucked. It
could be I'm suffering the let down from expecting too much. The
opening dj's; Function (Infrastructure), Victor Ridi Fong
(Minitek), Sleepy Boo (Basic NYC) played not one interesting
track. The sets sounded like a mix of minimal tracks from the sale
bin and a few old Transmat and Rob Hood numbers thrown in because
Stacey was there. I was ready to leave more than an hour before
Stacey started. But I decided to stick with it and have another
drink. (more alchol seemed to help)

'Do NOT miss this rare NYC visit from the techno innovator on this
very special night.' Said the flyer. As soon as Stacey took to the
decks, I thought finally, amateur hour is over. Stacey started with
a vocal sample of a guy talking about soul. Good sign eh? Well that
was the last bit of soul I heard in the half hour before I gave up.
Maybe it was that Stacey forget to restock his record bag with
something new and ditch the pounding NYC house tracks circa 2000.
Reguardless the New York University frat kids who showed up seemed
to like it. Hope that gives you an indication of where the bar was
set.

I would have been mad if I'd parted with the $15 to get in, instead
it was rather sad that there is still such a shortage of
challenging and INNOVATIVE music in NYC.

collective butts shake while doing so.

since this review has grown legs maybe i would have reconsidered
using the word 'perfect'. it's not that rich was so mechanically
perfect. i don't care about that. it's that once jeff got on i
realized how bad the audio was. now a lot of people (including some
close friends... ;)) are probably going to want to give me sh!t for
being a pro-digital person. and while i sorta am, that's not what i
mean. whatever was going on with jeff clipping the sound system,
some very dirty records, some badly fumbled mixes and ear-splitting
EQ choices, all the air went out of the party for me. i love
watching jeff and i agree with a lot of what was said about rich (tho
i wil reiterate that he still has that richie hawtin way of making a
terrible record interesting). it's not that a sample rate or
whizbang widget wasn't up to snuff; it's that this night jeff and i

surrounds the immediate and concrete. To me that's what it means to
be 'soulful' and play with emotion.

I definetely did enjoy hawtin's set and the l'il louis I Called U
acapella over spastik was a nice finish. Still I found myself bored
and uninspired especially when compared to Mills. It just wasn't
very funky and had little variation or risk. In my experience,
Hawtin's pounder sets (though this one was less pounder-more
minimal than when he came to SF two years ago) tend to inspire the
sorts of people who would rather head bang than jack your body. I
know Hawtin is a diverse performer but his formula the last three
times I've seen him just doesn't do it for me.

I'll just quote Someone Else From Here's review, posted elsewhere:

Rich was perfect. Even when he screwed up once. Played a lot of
whoknowswhat that sounds like sh!t when other ppl play it, then at
the
end played Pullover, Spastik, bits of I Called U and
Transition,

some crazy new Carl Craig track. Killed it.

Mills' first record was so dirty it wouldn't track. Then he
trainwrecked some. Then he played The Bells. Transitions awful,
EQ'ing painful, records you've heard 8,000 times.

And I hate to say it but after 2.5 hrs of digital perfection from
Richie, Jeff's records sounded terrible. He may have been pushing
the

mixer cuz I heard some clipping but overall the sound quality
difference between he and Hawtin was remarkable. I couldn't be on
the

main floor when he was playing.

But he was still pretty good. ;]

Like I said - funny how different people can have different reactions
to hearing exactly the same music ;)

should be familiar to fans of his adventurous electronic works. But
it's also something of a departure for him -- a sculpted cinematic

conversation -- not necessarily about it's relative quality as much

Not sure what to make of his spoken intro. Bone pays tribute to UR
and Mad Mike in a rather left-handed way. 'The time I played UR NYE
in the side room and everyone left the main room' and 'they asked me
to be a UR DJ but I respectfully declined.'

Which isn't to disrespect Bone's skills. The night he played in Iowa
City a few years back was definitely one of the finest nights of
techno we've had. Bone's mouth doesn't promise anything his hands
can't deliver, and there's nothing wrong with having a healthy ego.
But my friend DJ Earl-E once said I speak with my hands, and let
everyone else do the talking and frankly, that may be the best policy
all the way around.

i of course won't even begin to pretend that i can speak for bone,

fond memories and respect/tribute to mad mike, UR, and submerge.

Another year, another DJ Mag poll! I am glad to see Tiesto knocked
off and
Paul Van Dyk on top - his music is not my taste, but I've always
felt that
he's sincere and principled. Is Hawtin at # 12 not a triumph for
good music?

No love for Detroit in there overall, but that ain't nuthin' new!

Re: (313) drama ATTACK

2005-10-20 Thread Garrett McGrath
first off, it is true that Bone's preference for these mixes is that
during the given week they be available as a stream. duh. that's
why we did it that way. but that decision has nothing to do with
making this difficult, secretive, or anything other than fun. it was
intended to create a mood, to create the 'moment in time' sense of
the project. not to give anyone a hard time.

However - yes, Bone has said a few times now that if you're someone
who feels like they *have* be able to download it or whatever, fine,
do what you must. no one over here is going to get their panties in
a bunch. he's also said a bunch of times that eventually they will
all be available. direct links to the first 5 or 6 have already been
given out in emails to list members. there's no desire to keep the
music from people. the reason it exists is so that we can enjoy it.

in the case of The Archiver (Graham Williams), he's hooked up with
the D1 guys in dublin. Graham is the tech guy who recorded the mix
at this dublin party last weekend, and someone who apparently needs
put down the computer for a few hours and go for a walk. it is true
that at the time he got permission from Bone to put up a link to the
set. why he feels the need to be mr. secret sarcastic hacker boy, i
don't know.

another however, @ Graham: after talking to Bone today he wanted me
to tell you that while he did say you could put up the link, he had
no idea you were going to post it from here to the end of the earth.
nor was that intent. he thought you only meant on your site or maybe
ie-dance. give a brother an inch...

thanks for your interest and support everyone.

I don't really understand what the problem is here. If Bone
personally said it was ok to post the link then it's OK. End of.
Why is there a need to read between the lines'

of his real intention?
This whole streaming mp3 thing ruined this project for me. I really
enjoyed listening to the first 3 at work, which is really the only
time I get to listen to a lot of music.
Then the whole thing gets streamed and I'm fcked cos they will not
let me use streaming at work. So bang, That's that. No more bone
for me. I really lost interest after that. To the point that I
can't even be arsed to download the rest of them as and when they
get the green light from the techno cops.

Reading the bone email, I understand it to say
I would like this to happen
My intention was to have
this show be a weekly moment in time. Once the moment us gone, so
is the

mix

But I know this will happen and I don't mind.

I am not upset at any who downloaded or continue to download these
mixes as long as you represent me and my art in true underground

Could it really be any more clear?
