BODENSTANDIG 2000 [Rephlex / Feed the Machine DE]
German computer folk heros Bodenstandig 2000 step up. The Aphex Twin
can be
quoted as saying that they were the best live electronic act he had
seen
when they performed in London last in 2001 - and since then they have

toured
all over the world with their live Atari rave blast hits - dowsing the

crowd
at Recyclart in Brussels couldn't keep the crowd from rushing the stage
and
the folks at Camp Gay in Chicago thought the floor was going to cave in

with
300 people jumping up and down - so who knows what to expect when they

ROTFLOL [Autmn Records USA]
ROTFLOL is Pittsburgh based Jacob Ciocci, part of the Paperrad Crew
(along
with Jessica Ciocci and Ben Jones). When Jacob isn't creating zines or

flash
animations for John Peels' favourite band Lightening Bolt or busy at
CMU,
he
is making music that's as colourful as the clothes he wears. Tonight
members
from the BEIGE crew present Jacob's, lo-fi, melodic, junked out,
video
gamey, crazy dancetime electro video tracks. Positive, fun, and
uplifting
casio freakouts. This music is like all of this 'neo-electro/synth
pop'
stuff, except better and without the cold, robotic, black turtleneck
attitude. Jacob was to perform live for us tonight but unfortunately
he
couldn't make it. The video show is an experience in itself and was
first
performed in the UK by the BEIGE crew at the Liverpool Bienial last
week to
an audience that was totally blown away.

BITCH ASS DARIUS [NES Records, Databass]
Hailing from the current hip-hop hot spot of St. Louis [Nelly, Chingy,
J-Kwon, etc...], Bitch Ass Darius is the most recent signing to DJ
Godfather's DataBass label. Darius, affectionately known to friends as
Bitch Ass, made his name with releases on the now-defunct N.E.S
[Nigga
Entertainment Systems] label that popularised the ghetto bass sound
throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. DJ Assault, in town to
check
Darius' club night, took a few of his of 12's back to Detroit and they
regularly found their way into sets and mix CD's by Assault and DJ
Godfather. The rest is history, as Bitch Ass Darius' first DataBass EP
showcases the best of his extremely hard to find N.E.S. back catalogue
and
more DataBass releases are on the way.
Interesting to note - Bitch Ass Darius is so tight with Detroit legend
Ron
Murphy that Bitch Ass was to donate his kidney. [Ron Murphy is the of
NSC
who cut every single Jeff Mills, DJ Godfather / DJ Assault and
Underground
Resistance [to name but a few] record.]

TETINE [Slum Dunk Radio, Resonance FM]
Tetine means nipple and they are definitely our favourite Brazilians
DJs
who play dirty electro-disco-punk-booty-bass tunes from Rio de Janeiro
extensively played in the Bailes. You can call it funk carioca or Rio
funk.
Tetine are releasing the first ever European compilation on Mr Bongo
Records
later this year featuring Brazilian hip hop beats with the filthiest
raps.

  LEKTROGIRL [micromusic, Rephlex, Lektrolab]
Lektrolab resident Lektrogirl cleaning off her dusty fingers from
Europes
grottiest second hand vinyl shop to play obscure italo-electro gems,
electro
pop and homemade chipstyle tunes in an erratic and schizophrenic mix.

I think he is referring to Portamento or Glide which means when you play 2
notes or chords after each other. Instead of hearing two distinct sounds
the
pitch 'glides' (either up or down) from the original pitch to the new one
at

a rate specified by the amount of portamento set. A similar sound can be
made by using the pitch bend wheel.

Most of the Roland groove boxes (tb303 and 202 etc) have a slide function
which creates this effect also, and most analog and virtual analog
keyboards

have portamento.

Check paperclip people - oscillator for classic portamento slide.

Re: [313] Global Underground series - HP-DJ mixing

2001-05-09 Thread JARED WILSON
There are no rules. The only thing I find regressive, is when you use a
technology such as pro-tools or final scratch to emulate another technology.
To make mixes done on pro-tools sound like they where done on turntables
is limiting the ways we experience and perceive sound and music. We should
be using these technologies to push the framework of music and to find new
ways in which to experience it.

however, if a DJ has proved that he/she can carry a live mix (such as
hawtin, sasha, digweed, etc), I dont see a problem with a mix being touched
up with pro-tools, especially as these CDs are mass produced and the artist
in question I'm sure wants a perfect mix for the consumers purchasing it.

Thats a big difference then say, a DJ releasing a demo tape/cd done in pro
tools, getting booked and showing up without the skills to manage the
turntables.

Y'know, I have a real problem with mix CD's like that. I though the
whole

idea of a mix cd was to show some skills on the decks, not how much you
can
pay someone to blend tracks with ProTools. It was a huge letdown when I
heard that Richie's DE909 mix cd was done like this, like the guy can't
mix
it live or something (he can).

Someone might as well do an HP-DJ mix cd series. No one will know the
 difference.

The majority of the series is mixed via ProTools, with the DJ on the

tracks go like this:

A1: Kompression
B1: Dekompression
B2: Relaxation

Does anybody know what release this is or what label? I can't seem to find
it in any of the Voigt discographies I've looked at (like on that circonium

Not to add to the rumor, but I have heard similar stories. Either way it
does not matter, the line up is set, they will not be there.

I only wish to add this point. I hope that Carl Craig will not be the only
person to select talent each year. Don't take this the wrong way he has
done a wonderful job and given us a yearly event that finally recognizes the
music and where it was born...But if he continues to select the talent we

Just wanted to mention some new D-related stuff that has come my way
recently:

Tim Baker: The Believer EP (Ovum)
- two very mixable, very accessible, rolling grooves from Tim. Can't fail
to

see action.

Trevor Rockcliffe feat. Blake Baxter: Visions Of You remixes (In-Tec)
- loads of new mixes from Rockcliffe, Carl Cox, Samuel L Sessions, Roberto
Mello (house), Smith Selway. I have to say I wasn't that enamoured of
most

of them, but Cox's is the best mix I've ever heard from him.

DJ T-1000: Hyper-Stylized Life (Pure Sonik)
- Welcome back, Mr Oldham. Wicked EP, this, with 3 really impressive
energetic and non-cliched loop cuts and one cool, original electroic funk
cut. Definitely recommended.

Other good stuff:

WeltZwei: Intercity (Sender)
- good funky minimalism from Germany.

Len Faki; Everywhere Is Nowhere EP (Goodlife)
- more very playable trax from Goodlife, though not as outstanding as their
previous release - remixes of The Hacker's 'Fadin Away'

Percy X: Maintain (Soma)
- humming techno funk with a Steve Bicknell remix in Purpose Maker mode

Midfield General: Coatnoise (Skint)
- a bit like ZombieNation, actually, but defintely not what you'd expect
from Skint. Good Dave Clarke remix, too.

Cheers,

Very nicely stated.

Art in all forms is about expression.

Moods emotions that an artform creates are different in each
individual.

Regardless of what the means are that are used to reach the musical end.
what is created is what matters. (plagerisism aside) technological
advancement is not the problem. The problem starts when quality and
authentisity are compromised for laziness and lack of skill.IMO

I picked up the Kompakt - Total 2 compilation last weekend and I'm love
with

the M. Mayer track Amanda.

The only other Kompakt record I've been inspired to buy so far was the
first

M. Mayer 12. I see there's a new one, KOM 25. Anyone heard this? How does
it compare to the rest of his output? I like the overtly 80's style of
Amanda, and the overboard triumphant synths on the first one, but a lot of
the other Kompakt stuff I've heard doesn't really grab me as much as say,
Perlon, Basic Channel, etc. It almost feels like it's stuck in a grey area
between heady dancefloor stuff and super-quirky IDM, never really
satisfying

my cravings for either. Maybe it just doesn't go over as well in headphones
at the record store?

So... if you can point me to more Michael Mayer stuff that's worth picking
up, or releases on Kompakt that are sure to impress, I'd be much obliged.
On

that tip, anything that's on this German retro-80s meets German house tip
sounds good to me. The Popacid mix of Fackeln Im Sturm by Wolfgang Voigt is
another example of this style. I remember somone about a year ago said this
style was featured at some club in Germany. The more info the better.

Re: [313] Mike Ink, RRR, and early 80s Neue Deutsche Welle?

2001-01-17 Thread JARED WILSON

The sets by Brinkmann and Triple R are archived @ www.paxahau.com

Also, yes that is the same Mike Ink whos real name is actually Wolfgang
Voigt. Try the Circonium web page for background info and a discography for
him. As for the RRR reference I am not sure as the RRR that played with
Brinkmann is Riley Reihnard who runs TRAUM records out of Cologne and works
at Wolfgang Voigts KOMPAKT store. So I am not sure if they are the same.

Subject: [313] Mike Ink, RRR, and early 80s Neue Deutsche Welle?

Does anyone here know a lot about the early 80s German New Wave (Neue
Deutsche Welle) scene?

I have a CD reissue of the first two Der Plan LPs and it credits the
production on one of them (c. 1982) to Mike Ink. Is this the same as the
Kompakt-Profan-Burger/Ink-Studio1 artist? It would make sense, because
Robert Gorl (ex-Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, also of that scene)
keeps making good music even 20 years later, but still it's damn impressive
to musically innovate in two separate time periods!

Also, I'm come across the name Moritz RRR Reichelt as one of the founders
of Der Plan and Ata Tak Records -- is this the same person that recently
played on the same bill as Thomas Brinkmann over the summer in Chicago? I
dug his set better than Brinkmann's -- that's crazy if it's the same
guy. Perhaps they are all just referencing NDW artists as an homage to the
past? Any clarification on this matter would be much appreciated.

Lastly, any one in the Chicago area that has early Mute singles, let me
know. In lieu of Mute still not reissuing their early singles on CD, I'd
like to make a CD-R of Mute 1-10. I have everything except the Non/Smegma
single and the Robert Rental single. I would just need to digitize the two
singles. thanks.

cheers,
Dave

Profan is one of the all time great german minimal labels run by Wolfgang
and Reinhart Voigt to of the most prolific German producers today.

Wolfgang has gone by so many names its not funny (think Atom Heart alias'
times 2). Some of the more common ones are Mike Ink, M:I:5, Gas,
Grungerman, Sweet Reinhard, Wasserman, and Studio 1. He's is the
originator
of the Studio 1 label (of which Brinkmann first did his variations on),
the

Kreisel label, a slew of smaller german grunge acid labels like Djungle,
Auftrieb and Freidland, and has released on big labels like Force Inc. and
Warp.

Please check out Burger/Ink Las Vegas on Matador, this is the all time
greateset minimal album released!

FYI Profan 2 is by Sweet Reinhard and is called Kultur. Alot of profan
stuff now is ambient or (ie Reinhards Premiere World) some of the sweeter
Profan releases were by M:I:5, Wasserman, Studio 1, Pentax and Reval (watch
out or Pentax's Das Album though its just a bunch of blips and bleeps)

Hope that helps

Re: 313 ...opinions was [313] D label

2000-10-20 Thread JARED WILSON

Wv909 Keep it real

I see that what you measure with is not the same as I. What you hold as
something to gauge music by are things that I do not even consider (i.e.
soul). I like to think that music is beyond these types of ideologies and
hierarchies.

Subject: 313 ...opinions was [313] D label

This is your opinion ..plain and simple, in regards to 'advant'?
I'll guess this equates avant..and to that I'll quote a stagnant but
soulful guy Revolutionary art or music,is not determined by it's
avant garde content;nor it's use of technical trickery, rather, by how
much it revolutionises our thinking and imagination; thusly overturning
our PRECONCEPTIONS ; BIAS and PREDJUDICE...inspiring us to CHANGE
ourselves and the world... Carl Craig 1997 (admit. my paraphrase of his
statement)
Let me also reiterate ; The more people being creative with music ..all the
better! To say that they are the 'best' is pure opinion esp.
at this stage of their development..come on! people have been and still are
making /producing/spining Techno long before this new label started .
and it's my opinion(following your lead) That what makes the best Techno
is not just the flash in the pan stuff coversely it's the music that stands
the test of time and use...
With numerious releases from the submerge camp this year, and those
connected to s.i.d. crew as well , I find your opinion(s) to be
just that ...
P.s. maybe getting interested in your soul would keep it from getting
stagnant.

Don't you people get tired of hearing all that echo and reverb?

Never. This was in reference to the Deepchord releases I presume. Yes it
is very old ingredients, but when the finished product is simply good dubbed
out techno, who cares what its context is. Isolee uses these same
ingredients and it works.

I know the funky organic tech-house sound is very trendy right now,
people use the word soulful like its going out of style but who do you
think your kidding?
I'm sure Kevin, Juan, and Derrick could have easily looped disco
classics on some primitave one shot sampler if they really wanted to,

Yes I agree that tech-house has become very trite, but they should not be
compared to early detroit techno. Kevin, Juan, and Derrick are good
producers and important for techno, but to try to discredit another music by
saying that they could have easily made, is useless. Yes, The innovators'
music is good and important, but they are producers just like everyone else
and are not gods. What I mean by that is just because they touch
something does not mean it turns to gold.

And yes I am sick of the word soulful.

Re: [313] techno books/postmodernism (was UR in Europe)

2000-08-11 Thread JARED WILSON
I would disagree with this post. Techno Rebels tries to write a history
of techno. I would agree that at points Kodwo does drift into a poetic
phase, but More Brilliant... achieve what no other book on electronic
music has done, to try and translate the perception of music into words. it
is an extremely theoretical read.

In the end I guess we will have to agree to disagree, I am glad that someone
other than myself has read both books and can give a coherently process the
information and not just regurgitate it.

I would suggest that if you are interested in learning some history of
techno check out Techno Rebels, but if you are more interested in theory
than check out More Brilliant than the Sun.

P.s. the tactics in the other book you mentioned about postmodernism are
just modernist arguments against postmodernism. I would rather talk in
person about this than in lengthy threads:]

Well then you'd probably haven't heard:

Theo Parrish - Parallel Dimensions LP (Sound Signature)
Robert Hood - Nighttime World 2 (M-Plant)
Shake - Songs For My Mother (Frictional)
Da Sampla - Samplaholic (Moods Grooves)
Sean Deason - Allegory Metaphor (Intuit Solar)
Kevin Saunderson - Powerbass (Sonic Groove)

Yes I have heard the previously mentioned records. I think for the most
part they are all good average releases. Some are a little stronger than
others, but what I am looking for are those warehouse stormers that just do
not seem to come out of Detroit as of late.

I have been impressed with all of the Deepchord releases, but I am just a
sucker for that type of sound. I would not say Deepchord is really doing
anything special either.

I am waiting to see what the next wave of Detroit producers will be. Also,
I think Detroit has had better house releases than techno. Any thoughts
would be appreciated.

Re: Ax-020

2000-08-10 Thread JARED WILSON

Well if you're looking for warehouse stormers then logically you'd be
dissapointed with these releases. The musical trend now seems to be heading
toward more intricate sounds, structures that are more specialised then
what
was released back in the day. I'm not implying that there were no
intricacies

in techno music then, just that it is more prevalent today because of new
technological advancements. Music evolves...and continue to evolve. (In
some

cases more than some people do!)

I totaly agree, it is not that I do not loke the previously mentioned
releases, they are just in a different context. I am a big fan of the
intricate sound structures of late, but they have started to become a little
to tright for my tastes. They are becoming to intricate and sophisticated.
However, I would argue that some producers have begone to reintroduce the
elements of a warehouse stormer with these intricate sound structures
(Marco Carola and Adam Beyers' release on Zenit would be a good example).
It is this type of production that I start to see influencing Detroit (via,
Electric Deluxe). I feel these producers have found a great midway point
between the intricate and storming sound. Another example would be Ade
Fenton's Perverter release.

the most avant techno I hear of late has come from elsewhere and has begun

Am I completely wrong or am I the only one who dares to say... IMO

Your only stating your opinion and there nothing wrong with that.

Ax-020 is a completely disappointing record... More than that compared
to his visionary releases in the early/mid 90's I think Mills produced
no good record during the last 2 years... Any comments?

Because he's been on the experimental tip lately but I see what your
saying, I feel the same way about many Detroit artist nowadays.
But lets look at this whole tribal techno movement that I'm not
especially a big fan of, would it have even happened if it wasnt for
Jeff Mills? that's basically what it is, just a bunch of Jeff Mills
rehash from 3 or 4 years ago.
Newer doesn't necessarily mean better but many Detroit techno or former
Detroit techno artist feel they have to change for the sake of progress.

When I listen to Detroit techno its mostly the classic stuff because
that had a formula that worked, yes it is considered dated compared to
today's dance trends but like they say newer doesn't necessarily mean
better and alot of what I hear in electronica/ techno culture today is
really not that new or better, its just more eclectic and refined due to
technological advancements.

If i translate in English: Underground resistance are the other side of
Detroit techno. Under U.R., Jeff Mills and Mad Mike created radicals
hardcore dance titles that nobody had done. This simple and repetitive
type

of techno had a big impact in Europe. This style have been copyed under a
lot of hardcore or trance forms, with a lot less quality.

Anyone have an opinion on this? I don't know much of Detroit music
history,

and even less knowledge of UR in Europe.

Re: [313] New track for you all

It seems a little thin. When I say this it seems like there was not very
much manipulation to the sounds other than effects (not that there always
has to be more). I am not big on congas and the ever popular reverse, I
think both of these elements have become sort of cliche in techno lately.
The transitions are a little rough and jerky, they are not fluid. I think
if you could do a stronger mix of it you could have a good techno filler on
your hands, but not a warehouse stormer. I hope the info was helpful.

deffinetly more appealing in sound, sequencing, and special retro fits you

 Hi,

I cant quite afford a TR-909 or 808 yet so Im planning on buying a TR-606
or

TR-707.

which one in general sounds better (close to a tr-909)?

Um, neither. The 707 sounds pretty harsh and digital -- the best sounds
are the claps and the hats. The kick sounds like someone kicking a metal
wastebasket.

It does have the Roland Step/Tap sequencer business, and that's easy
to sort out. The 707 shuffle is killer. It has individual outs AND volume
sliders so you can build up and break down a pattern.

It's most useful live if you've pre-programmed all your beats into
different panel, since in pattern play you can trigger patterns on the
fly. And you can do that Richie Hawtin trick of setting the last step
temporarily to 1 for a drumroll.

It can also trigger analog drum brains like the tama techstar and simmons
analog drum boxes. And it has a trigger output (on the side stick) that
can clock an SH101 or MC202. And if that isn't enough, it has individual
outputs for each sound.

The 606 is all analog, and has the most brilliant drum sequencer ever made,
because you can switch between pattern and edit mode on the fly. There
are extensive mods you can do to bring individual sounds out and add more
control over the sound. Biggest downfall -- you've heard all those sounds
a million times before, and the kick is wimpy unless you mod it for
individual outputs and put in a decay time knob.

To just learn how to cane a drum machine, I would go with the 606.

and also, which one would make more sense to own in someone starting to
build up enough equipment to write some tracks?

Well they're a tool but the sounds are a bit dated and wimpy. Now if you
have a nice mixer and a bunch of effects to mess them up they're great, but
on their own they're not much use. For standalone coolness you can't beat
the 606 -- leave your laptop at home and take this baby on the plane.

opinions on other synths/drum machines up to $400 would be appreciated
also,

Really the best thing you can do if you have a PC is to buy fruityloops
software (http://www.fruityloops.com) -- it can do loads more than any
hardware box. If you must have an actual drum machine, look at the
Korg Electribe line, especially that new sampling box. You can use
samples to get going, and since you can get samples of just about
everything

on the web, getting a sampler is like getting a load of instruments for
free.

Well, I must say Jared has gone right to one of the central dilemmas
of philosophy. Do words have a common meaning or do they mean only
what we individually say they do, like we were living in Wonderland.

experimental has a scientific and technical meaning that is quite
precise, but experimental also has a commonly understood meaning
or range of meanings, for example in music. Fred Frith is pretty
experimental in his approach, I'd say. Or Lee Perry. Or a good
deal of electronic music, even electronic dance music.

You can be dogmatic about this if you like, Jared, but don't expect
us to go along with it just because you say so.

My point was simply that the term experimental has become over used and
stagnent in meaning. I am pushing for a more descriptive and in-depth
analysis of what Micho is doing.

alright, I was hopeing I could avoid typeing a long email, however,
respectfully I must explain what I do.

My visual arts i.e. video installations portray a microcosm of societies
strangulation by mediated tactiles. For instance, my installations
typically consist of larger then life television forms perverting the icon
of tv as a demi-god type alter (like the huge collisiums with monolithic
statues of our heros in greek games) But now, its techno and its in a
dark club with nowhere to hide, because the room has been wired with
cameras that bring the public into the same arena as the performer. The
tactiles of a mediated installation reaches out captures the performance,
washes to the crowd picking out people and electronically transferring them
to the monolithic archs with the performers, because thats what its all
about, the music, the soul, and the reaction of the crowd.

the experiment:: destroy the common boundry between performer and crowd,
individualize the people from the masses and project them onto a mass
communicative device. I simply overly exagerate what society does.

My audio experimentations are very experimentive in my opinion. You can
decide for yourself. I take drum machines and toys amongst other
instruments and open them up. The experiment is to disect them, find the
sound creating areas and give them the ability to be organic and have the
option of having interaction by the human environment. i.e. take the
tr-606, my most extensive experiment. I gave it the ability to have
control by human interaction to alter the sounds which were not
controllable before. The sounds are then taken to another level where say
the hihats can fluctuate in pitch by a cv in that controls the variance of
the filter with every pulse transmitted to that. The toys are given an
alternate brain which makes them do different things then what they were
intended. The sound is then transmitted to the audience by means of live
interaction with balanceing multiple drum machines
with toys and various sounds. I make the beats live and manipulate the
sounds live.

the experiment:: sure its been done, but not to the degree im taking it.
now a days alot of people presequence, preprogram, presample, pre this and
pre that. I aint doin it. its all live baby, just manipluations of
cycleing patterns and makeing that repetition sound as organic as
possible with as little digital as possible with a degree of interaction
previously unobtainable. call it modern electro-jazz or whatever.

so heres the scoop, my grand daddy was a scientist here in detroit many
moons ago. he invented many forms of metallic paint and what later became
known as napalm. sure paint had been around for years, he took it a step
further and invented metallic paint for automobiles, and today, they still
use it, he still gets paid for the patents. napalm was utilized in war,
that was simply a defunct paint mixture he came up with that was highly
combustionable.

The Moral::
one must learn the rules to break the rules and take it a step further..
and reinventing is what it might be, but its another step in our evolution.
experimental is experimentation, be it some simple thing to some complex
thing, to each their own, as long as its experimentation to the one
experimenting, then its experimental.

Re: [313] Techno Visual Arts + sonic boom

2000-07-19 Thread JARED WILSON
I would disagree. Experimentation does not exist. You state, so if I sit
down to make a track, if I do not start out with a concrete idea but instead
figure it out as i go, then this is experimental no matter how straight
ahead the resulting track is. There is no possible way to start something
without having any idea of it before hand. Simply being conscious of your
actions is enough information to disqualify your argument. To truly
experiment, in techno for example, you would have to step outside of the
structure or language of techno; meaning create something new in
techno. It is not possible to do this because of the limitations of
language or structure of techno (or what ever you are referring to). You
can only assemble never experiment. Looking forward to any comments.

 Micho,

I realy do not believe what you are doing or have done would be
concidered

 experimental.

If it involves experimentation it is experimental - so if I sit down to
make a track, if I do not start out with a concrete idea but instead
figure it out as i go, then this is experimental no matter how straight

Yes I do have high standards. Why would anyone want to have low ones. I
never said that Micho does not make good music. I was inquiring to his
use of the word experiment to describe what he does. I disagreed with the
description and ask about it. How is that being hash or stuck-up. I am
just being honest and looking for an honest dialogue.
I would never say that what I am doing or have done was newer than
anything else. There is always a large history that I am drawing from when
ever I am working on a project.
Just because you put your heart into something that has soul does not
make it anything, let alone experimental. Yes the Grand-Pubahs are
drawing from different genres of music, but that is no where near
experimental. It is pastiche.

Just remember you are the one that has perceived me as being rude.

I would disagree. Experimentation does not exist.

I think this attitude is pretty harsh and stuck up. By using the same
logic, you could say that Charles Mingus isn't experimental. After all,
the double-bass had been around for centuries before him, as did the keys
and chords that he used. It isn't as if he singlehandedly invented jazz,
right?

I think a more laidback and encouraging attitude would be to say that
almost anything with soul is experimental. Take the Detroit Grand PuBahs.
They're using booty, detroit techno, and dub, and taking the piss out of
it. Having fun and seeing how far they can go. Like it or not musically,
(and I am nearer to the not), I'd say they are putting their heart into
it, having a blast, and expanding the horizons of the music coming out of
our city. Respectable, IMO. I try to not be so inclusive as to what I
consider experimental, and it benefits my art and my dealings with others
greatly.

Micho makes good music, and does it in his own quirky little way.
Manipulating the guts of musical equipment, nonmusical equipment,
pyrotechnics, etc. are not considered experiments? I think you have pretty
high standards, Jared. Then using such a rude term as reinventing the
wheel and excusing yourself by saying no offense I just want some
discourse. Remember that sinewaves, quadrophenia, and room tone aren't
exactly inventing new forms of wheels, either. Perhaps you could give us
some more concrete examples of what experimental art means to you (no
pun intended with the concrete)

2000-07-19 Thread JARED WILSON
I apologies for the generalisations, but it is difficult to include every
thought into a single e-mail. My point was simply that the term
experimental has become over used and stagnent in meaning. I am pushing
for a more descriptive and in-depth analysis of what Micho is doing. It is
difficult enough to talk about sound and music, or anything for that matter,
because of the limitation of language. We will never be able to actually
know what someone is referring to, but if we keep trying and having more
in-depth discourses, such as these, we can become more informed.

oh no, here we go again...

i agree w/ the following statement:

Just because you put your heart into something that has soul does
not
make it anything, let alone experimental.

true enough. i never thought of soul being the equivalent or synonomous
w/experimental...although they can overlap.

however, experimenting is trying something new... it's relative to the
person. one question, why make such broad generalisations, such as there
is no experimentation. what purpose does this (belief) serve, not that
i'm completely utilitarian it seems narrow minded..and limited.

my $0.02

perhaps, i've missed the point all together... i feel like i usually do,
with these trance/techno... experimental/noexper' discussions. hmmm.

Re: [313] Techno Visual Arts

2000-07-18 Thread JARED WILSON
The sounds that I use in my installations range from a basic sine-wave drown
to hard minimal beats that move around the room from speaker to speaker. An
early installation I did consisted of four speakers in a stairwell. Each
speaker was placed corresponding to the four floor locations (one speaker
per floor). Individual tones where assigned to each speaker making up a
chord. The tones would fade in and out so sometimes there were only two
tones or three or one or all four. As you ascended or descended the
stairwell the sound took on many different qualities because of the
acoustics. Recently I have been focusing on the surface and placement of
sounds within the room and patterns they are played in, not the ambient
sounds between the notes (which has become very cliche in music lately).
The sounds I use in recent installations are dry (no reverb, chorus, flange,
etc) and utilizing delay to move the rhythm around the room. I look forward
to any responses or questions.

had the means to try them. What kind of music are you producing then as

My work is not in the traditional sense visual. When I have a show in a
gallery I do sound installations. The installation is usually concieved
after viewing the space it is intended for. My installations consist only
of speakers and the sound which is also produced after viewing the space.
My work is about the pure perception of the sound.

I did a collaborative 24 hour live p.a. last summer with documentary maker
Jody Huellmantel. I will inform the list of any future events.

Haye!

Besides the excelent work of Abdul Haqq on Submerge, does anyone know of
any
visual artists *directly* connected to 313 Techno? Okay, there are some
who
you might think as fitting in what you'd expect from visual arts in
techno,
but I mean people who are in close relationship with the music and
imagery.

Yes,

My name is Jared Wilson and I have a b.f.a. from the Center for Creative
Studies plus been a d.j./ producer for eight years. My artwork
(although
I would not draw a line between artwork and music) during the past
few

years has concentrated on sound. I have had two one man exhibitions in
the
past year and a half. Both of which involved sound installations based
off
of rhythm. I have not had a trad art show in a while as I have been
concentrating mostly on my new record label. If anyone has any questions
about what I am doing I would be eager to have a more in depth dialogue.

Good book on Techno...

2000-07-12 Thread JARED WILSON

Second: does anyone know of any good books about techno in
 particular, or
electronic music in general? I've read Techno Rebels by Dan

More Brilliant than the Sun by Kodwo Eshun is an exceptional about the
history and related phenomena of techno, house, jungle, etc. Kodwo has
written for many periodicals including the wire. The book is a good change
from all of the modern garbage that surrounds techno media. I recommend
this book highly over Techno Rebels by Dan Sicko.
