Limited edition Jason Hogans boxers and panties. Or some seriously cool packaging, like Radiohead's Amnesiac or Ghostly's Disco Nouveau. Jurren: that's one way of getting people to buy your music, but do you want to sell cd's/vinyl, or do you want to sell your music? why not offer them the chance to download your music from a website? sure, not everyone wants to pay for downloads, but would those people buy the physical copy? I hear you. I guess I feel the trouble with that is whether or not some folks pay for a download, others will not once its out there for the taking. There's possibly less incentive for paid downloads when you factor in the sound quality loss of compressed audio. Maybe not though cause paid downloads are still cheaper than CDs, eh? The title performing artist could take on a more strict meaning if it becomes very unprofitable for labels and musicians to release music. Recordings for free, performance for fee? I had similar ideas about labels taking on a somewhat different role of a promotional network or something, still allowing artists to concentrate on their art. But, I doubt it will go that far 'cause like you said J.B., there are collectors supporters out there. Perhaps we're tripping over nothing it will be business as usual. There's quite a few times I've heard something on the web copped it later. Technology could ultimately serve as a filter for ass-nasty music. Scenario 1: I heard that on www. so so and it swallowed, I won't buy it.. Or, Scenario 2: It was bangin', I need that!. No more hiding behind the shrink wrap! Could be good. We'll see... So, anybody need some fly underwear? JPH.
Re: (313) Moby (cheddar)
and truth be told, a lot of electronic music is released without the artist making much of anything off the record/CD sales. its kinda a prerequisite to doing better live shows, which is where the money (if any) is. Jay Hogie says: BINGO! You gotta move a scheisseload of units before you make more than enough for peanut butter jelly (sorry, no bread). Economically, I think of releases as an opportunity to make money from giggin' - at least until I get my label going... Okay, not even then. Limited edition Jason Hogans boxers and panties. Or some seriously cool packaging, like Radiohead's Amnesiac or Ghostly's Disco Nouveau. Humans don't have enough collective integrity (or loot) to buy music simply on principle. I'm guilty, and I'm an artist. Sad. I do my best to support others, even if it means listening to webcasts like BBC or Nuwave Radio to hear decent tunes until I can afford to play catch up with releases. Regardless of what anybody says, there's too much good music out there for most people with an average income to purchase everything that they want. Re: (313) b-boys b-girls @ DEMF #2 ....
There's this one crew, I feel crummy for forgetting their name :-{ I think they might still be together, I remember being amazed by this bite-sized b-boy named U-Turn. I've seen them @ a couple of events before. Me my Capoeira (Brazilian martial art that had an influence on breaking) pals have jumped in the circle with 'em, including DEMF. Some were really battling and some were just letting loose and having fun. I'm curious as to how many active crews are there in the Detroit area and do they attend many of the techno events. Any weblinks? MEK

I read an Xzibit interview so I knew about his Detroit origins. That Snoop daddy's dogg business is new to me though... Now that I think about it, the dark style is pretty pervasive as well. Chalk my former statements up to personal bias :-) I liked the Esham tune that samples Roy Ayers, its pretty difficult to screw up an Ayers based tune though. Most of the folks I talk to prefer the stuff I described in my previous post, and I come across more local producers doing that style, including some buddies of mine (like Recloose, though he's in NZ now). Maybe me and the dark hop folk's paths just don't cross? To keep this 313 related, its interesting that nowadays most Detroit hip hop producers Detroit electronic producers tend to have near identical collections of gear. I consider hip hop to be electronic music (duh?), and most of the time I use the same types of tones to craft all my stuff, hip hop or otherwise - so I don't feel horrible about putting it on the same project. The lines are so blurry now! If all goes well, I'm gonna be dropping some vocals on an upcoming album by a local artist who's more known for techie fare - not gonna spill the beans prematurely! Oh, there's a local rapper dude named Sun on a more soulful vibe as well. He's okay, I like a couple of his tunes. Here's a pop quiz for you: Awesome Dre? Kaos Maestro? Toodles. JPH. I guess there's a Detroit style emerging... I'd say that a Detroit style of hip hop has been around for a minute, not necessarily mainstream though. T There's a couple of other Detroit hip hop flavours running around, but they aren't as pervasive within the community - and in my opinion they suck. Interesting. I kinda put Slum Village on their own. I have some stuff I still have to play that I got in Detroit but that dark style seems to be associated with Eminem, D12, Proof and Dogmatic and Sicknotes and some others, and they seem partial to rock too. I didn't care for it at first but Em's work is getting more boom to it. I hate that tinny synth sound in some gangsta rap, I dig the booming bass, powerful beats, myself. Incidentally Xzibit grew up in Detroit and left at 10. Snoop Dogg's dad is from Detroit. Betcha didn't know that.
(313) Slum Village Herbert / The D Sound?
Hey they (Slum Village) already sample that (Bodily Functions) on the new album I'm told. Confirmed! The song is called What Is This. In the future he wants to be less in the spotlight as a rapper and eventually do more production... I guess there's a Detroit style emerging... I'd say that a Detroit style of hip hop has been around for a minute, not necessarily mainstream though. Tainted by SV has probably made the biggest splash on the airwaves, out of the stuff I'd say is D flavored. De La Soul's Stakes Is High (produced by Jay Dee) enjoyed a tiny bit of radio play. D flavor you ask?... Jazzy. Funky. Analog. Pretty Minimal. Not a lot of reverb what not. Plump, abbreviated kick drums. Exaggerated snares claps sharp enough to take your head off. Washy, filtered samples. Rhodes, lots of Rhodes. Large lively staccato basslines. Swinging, free flowing scat-like vocals. Basically picking up where A Tribe Called Quest left off. I think of Dabrye, Dwele, Wajeed, Lacksadaisycal, Jay, Subterraneous, SV, my buddies greenSKY Jazz, :brownstudy (yours truly!), and a some others I can't think of for some annoying reason (sleep deprivation perhaps?). There's a couple of other Detroit hip hop flavours running around, but they aren't as pervasive within the community - and in my opinion they suck. The aforementioned brand of head is open to some of the more adventurous techno stuff (akin to their own aesthetic) - i.e., Herbert, Domu, Bjork, Sutekh, blah, blah, blah... I must admit that you're less like likely to find a head into more traditional techno fare like, ummm, something from the Belleville three or UR maybe. Okay, I really should got to sleep now. Boom bip! JPH.
(313) Elitism
Its good to hear that someone hasn't encountered any elitism or snobbery. I must say that I've had my share of awkward experiences (ain't sayin' no names!). Some people swear that everyone should know appreciate who they are, what they've done, what they stand for. I came from a background of mostly hip hop when I began mingling with tech types, hardly knew anything about C2 when he signed me. It was cool 'cause he didn't take it all weird or anything. I was just a dude experimenting with whatever sounds he felt like. People need to make up their minds: either you love something and want to foster an environment where other folks can discover learn to love it also, or you're an a**hole who wants to decrease the size of the pond in order to be a bigger fish. I graduated high school I like it that way! I also realize that for someone relatively new to this milieu, I came with my own set of insecurities that amplified any ill vibes, and occasionally I created or imagined them when there were originally none to be found. But anyway, a person should never have to endure being chuckled or snarled @ for inquiring who someone is, or what their contributions are to the tiny little electronic music universe, sheesh! JPH.
