Some jazz fusion + funk: James Mason: Rhythm of life [Chiaroscuro, but recently repressed by Sould Brothers, UK] = Probably the best LP ever done IMHO. ``Sweat power embrace'' has so much energy... Truly amazing stuff... (Does anyone know if this was ever released as a 12??) Cesar Camargo Mariano: Sao Paulo [Lup Som, recently repressed on CD] = Ok, this might be a bit obscure, but we should give some props to our home talents and it is also amazing. Very fast percussion and full of electronic keyboards... Santana's ``Welcome'' and ``Butterfly'' are very nice as well. If you liked G.Duke, I would recommend ``Faces in reflection'' (a D.May fave) and ``Brazilian Love Affair'' (again nice percussion + bossa nova influences). Lonnie Liston Smith's ``Visions of a New World'' and ``Expansions'' (recently re-recorded as a house verison by Scott Grooves from Detroit (?)) are more on the funk side but equally electronic and very nice. Chick Corea Light As a Feather -- redeems all the prog-wank suckitude of everything else he recorded in the 70s. Agree on this... probably his best work IMHO (But Weather Report stuff is cool, too... BTW, this reminds me of L.Garnier sitting in my car here in Sao Paulo in 1999 listing to a WR tape and saying ``Wow! What's this?'' ... ``err, Weather Report, mate'' ... ``Never heard of it. Sounds amazing! Maybe I will do such a jazzy track when I get back home''...) Airto Fingers -- his best work. Source for the sample in MAW Bela Horizonte Can't disagree more!!! This is good, but check ``Natural Feelings'' (w/ Flora, Hermeto Pascoal, Sivuca) and specially ``Identity'' (this was a C.Craig fave, too). Miroslav Vitous Mountains In The Clouds -- abstract, amazing. Don't know this! Any more details, pls?! Greetings, Guilherme

Which record has you sold/exchanged and now regret ? I Bought Another Side by Fingers Inc when it first came out and loved it (tho I was a soul/rare groove boy at the time). Found Amnesia by Mr Fingers and bought on sight thinking I would like it too. But at the time I just didn't get it. Couldn't find the vibe in it. I needed vocals to get into the music, I think. Ended up swapping it for a Peter Tosh album after it just sat in a crate for a year or so. How I wish I had kept it !! Cheers Rav

RE: (313) Stevie Wonder was re: something sensible was Re: (313) Mills
In the UK we have a 'boy band' called Blue they hooked up with SW and Angie Stone in a recents collabaration (abhoration) for the classic Signed Sealed Delivered Im Yours. Blue *feat* SW and AS. I mean two a penny boy band feat a soul legend. Why Stevie ? Why are you spoiling my memory of all the great music with this cack ? Surely you don't need the money ... Yeah I will be putting on Fulfillingness' First Finale as soon as I get home tonight. Rav ps This post prob wont make it to the list as it seem I cant post anymore : ( so if you fellas want to forward it, feel free. -Original Message- From: Andrew Duke Cognition Audioworks http://cognitionaudioworks.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 03 March 2004 16:07 To: Robert Taylor Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Stevie Wonder was re: something sensible was Re: (313) Mills Robert Taylor wrote: Strange coming from me, but has anyone got anything sensible to say today? ;-) I had the unfortunate experience of, while flipping through the TV channels yesterday, coming upon the video for Stevie Wonder's Just Called To Say I Love You from the absolutely horrid Woman In Red soundtrack (don't drive drunk and calling to say you love someone are great sentiments, yes, but accompanying them with clunky 1984 sounds don't work). Now, let me state for the record that Stevie Wonder is a HUGE fave of mine, I just don't have any *post*-1983 records from him! Anyway, that incident from yesterday lead to my listening to nothing but Stevie records so far today and I just had a second unfortunate experience that leads to this rant: STOP BASTARDIZING STEVIE RECORDS BY interpolating THEM! Why the anger?: well, here am I enjoying side 2 of Songs In The Key Of Life and track 1 is I Wish--bastardized by Will Smith for that bloody movie Wild West (I forget the exact title), and then just 2 songs later comes the most wonderful Pastime Paradise--bastardized by Coolio for his horrible rework. Taken separately, I was able to suffer through these bastardizations in the past when they came out, but having the reminders rubbed in my face within the space of 3 tracks this morning, damn, I almost feel Will and Coolio should be apologizing to anyone listening to Songs In The Key Of Life from now on! :) Brings back another horrible memory: I had had a house/tech-house residency at a local bar (313 relevance: Kenny Larkin's rework of Sade that I got when Dan Bell was running the Seventh City store in Detroit with Kristie Negro was a bit hit at this residency) and Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise was a big hit at the time (not that I ever played it--ever--but the other DJs at the bar certainly did). So I played Stevie's Pasttime Paradise when someone requested Coolio during the house/tech-house night (guess he didn't clue in to the theme of the night) thinking I could sorta satisfy the request and perhaps educate a bit as well as keep the vibe I was trying to work with. Well, I almost got beaten up! When I explained the Stevie-- Coolio connection, the guy did not give a sh*t--he just wanted to hear his Coolio. Will Smith did the same horrible thing to a Whispers record I used to love. Don't miss those days at all. Thank goodness Kanye West chops up and plays around a bit with the Chaka Khan sample when he uses it on Through The Wire instead of going for a rap-over-the-original rework. Whew! Not sure if it was sensible, but there's my rant for the morning, Robert. :). Andrew Duke -- Jason Trenholm was born 31 August 1969 and died 1 January 2004. (313) FW:techno LP' s
Been having probs posting to 313 since I resubbed. So Ill try again. Apols if it duplicatesIf not Ill have to go back to lurking --- Top Five from The D in no order. Wire To Wire - Robert Hood More Songs.. - CC SkyNet - Infinity Aril Brika - Deeparture In Time Urban Tribe - Collapse of Modern Culture I can easily put any one of these on and not feel the need to forward/miss tracks. They offer a variety of paces and textures in a way to keep me interested and the experience is less of a mix CD type where the pace/intensity buiilds, peaks, holds and drops for 10. I guess it more of a home listening experience for me as this is were I hear most of my music and at 38 I don't do clubs much. That my tuppence. And his argument is that compilations are far more suited to the genre. I half agree. I virtually never listen to a techno LP all the way through - however, without the techno LP, we'd have missed out on alot of good tracks alot of the time I buy a techno LP, it's for one track or two I suppose. so - what's the best techno LP you have? RE: (313) Chillage Idiots/Detroit sound
I am not a producer or a DJ. So from a consumer of the material. I would say I think you can have a detroit 'feel' to the music without using classic detroit instuments. theres a lot of music that has a detroit 'feel' to it. it's the string sounds, the high hat programing and the warm percussive percusion. the future feel. there a hiphip instumental track on roots manuva's 'dub come save me' (apols cant remember the title) which to me is a detroit inspired track, whether mr roots would think that or not, I don't know. but that's how I hear it. more later. just wanted to chip in. rav. Which brings me to this: Can an artist be considered Detroit (or simply techno) ONLY if he or she uses the classic Detroit instruments and melodies/style or is it more about the energy that the music carries?

The single Danger is not at all representative (I actually thought it was very Neptunes like, a bit derivative for Ms Badu). It's really brave putting this out. The sleeve notes suggest it's a reaction to the monotony of urban radio. Badu modelled it on a mixtape. I always loved the songs on Baduizm - there ain't nothing wrong with great songs - and some of the neo-soul albums I've bought have relied on the groove more than songs and they've not been especially memorable but like D'Angelo's layered Voodoo this really works. This takes Mama's Gun a step further. I think a lot of 313 heads would really dig this!
RE: (313) Off centre soul/New Erykah Badu LP
If you like this off centre UK soul like Spacek, try to lay your hands on the first Lewis Taylor CD from 97 or thereabouts. Similar atmosphere tho not as tech_y. OKIve got a unwanted gift CD from HMV, its worth £16.99. I went last night on my way home and try to get a refund on it only to be told that I cant have one (ill miss out the rest of the conversation, but I wasn't happy) All I can do is do a swap for another CD. So somewhat irate I looked around but couldn't find anything in the 10 mins I had before they shut. Planning on going again later...any recommendations for me that I can pick from the somewhat non specailist HMV Ps no looped bangers please :) On heavy rotation atm are the Emoticon Sampler, The Irma Soul in Motion comp and anything on Archive. So Deep Techno. Thanks In Advance. Rav

to quote Robin. i must be getting old, i like my techno a lot slower these days (yeah and i mean techno, not house) Sorry if this is really boring but someone may have a view on this. Techno with its 120-130 bpm raises the heartbeat and Blood Pressure..yep Ive tried it with a moniterlisten to Det Esc Co or Urban Tribe and everything is down again. At 38 you need to think of these things : ) So is persistent exposure to fast bpms bad for your health ? Is it better to come home and not listen to techno to 'relax'. And keep it for the times you wanna feel hyped. Is there good slower techno out there that it not too 'noodly' and 'soft'. Now we are moving away from the overblown to the grassroots and the up and coming DJs. People no longer want to listen to cheesy anthems this news is the best I've heard in ages... if the prediction comes true. The lack of connection at superstar DJ gigs just got worse and worse. I'm more than happy to watch the Keoki's of the world die on the vine, while the guy playing REAL tracks at local bars and weeklies will always be digging deeper and harder to bring new fresh underground music to speakers near you, (for people who actually care). Those stars at the top get complacent, the club accountants start calling the shots and the music suffers because of it - no surprise. Support your local sound system, if you are the kind of person who likes to go out, throw your own night at a local pub instead -- real recognizes real. YOU (reading this email) are the performer *and* the audience... it's about time the DJ scene has overthrown (again) the rockstar/stadium performance paradigm, it was getting out of hand. Can we move past the club-branded water bottles, vacation packages, cell-phone plans and and get back to the underground music please? That whole superclubs thing, the lack of connection to most electronic music DJs and fans I know was remarkable, while the underground DIY energies will consistently remain on a low boil. peace Matt MacQueen

ŒBUFFALO GALS¹ MALCOLM McLAREN THE WORLD¹S FAMOUS SUPREME TEAM LIVE MIX 1983 Live mix from ŒLegend¹ in Manchester using 3 turntables. Recorded onto cassette, so apologies for the poor sound quality. The track at the beginning is Klien MBO¹s ŒDirty Talk¹. 2. ŒD¹YA LIKE SCRATCHIN¹¹ - PICCADILLY RADIO B-BOY MIX 1983 In the summer of 83, when breakdancing began to hit the streets of Manchester in a big way, I put this together with the breakers and poppers in mind. As with all my Radio mixes, the equipment I used were two Technics SL1200¹s and a Revox B77 reel-to-reel. Tracks are ŒD¹Ya Like Scratchin¹¹ by Malcolm McLaren The World¹s Famous Supreme Team, ŒThe Adventures of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel¹ by Grandmaster Flash The Furious Five, ŒBreak Dancin¹ Electric Boogie¹ by the West Street Mob, ŒThe Wildstyle¹ by Time Zone, ŒRockit¹ by Herbie Hancock, ŒI¹m The Pacman¹ by The Pacman, and ŒHobo Scratch¹ by Malcolm McLaren The World¹s Famous Supreme Team. 3. ŒFREAK-A-ZOIDS¹ PICCADILLY RADIO DANCE MIX 1983 One of a number of mixes I did for Piccadilly between 82-84 (beginning in May 82). The mixes were the first of their type in the country, and were aired on Mike Shaft¹s specialist black music show, ŒT.C.O.B¹ (Taking Care Of Business). This mix features many ŒLegend¹ and ŒWigan Pier¹ classics from 82/83, including ŒFreak-A-Zoid¹ by Midnight Star, ŒBeat The Street¹ by Sharon Redd, ŒConfused Beats¹ by New Order. ŒWalking On Sunshine¹ by Rockers Revenge, ŒBody Work¹ by Hot Streak¹, ŒThe Return Of Captain Rock¹ by Captain Rock, ŒHeat You Up¹ by Shirley Lites, ŒMakin¹ Music¹ by Gary¹s Gang, ŒJingo Breakdown¹ by Candido, ŒIt¹s Passion¹ by The System, ŒWeekend¹ by Class Action, Chocolate Milk ŒWho¹s Getting¹ It Now¹, ŒToney Lee ŒReach Up¹ and others, plus snippets of some of the more innovative pop 12² mixes of the period, ŒDon¹t You Want Me¹ by the Human League, ŒThe Look Of Love¹ by ABC, ŒChant No 1¹ by Spandau Ballet and ŒSituation¹ by Yazoo. 4. ŒI FEEL FOR YOU¹ CHAKA KHAN PICCADILLY RADIO TURNTABLE EDIT 1984 One of a series of mixes I did for Piccadilly in 84 where I took a well-known track and put together my own version. I called them ŒTurntable Edits¹ because I¹d use 2 copies of the same record for repeat and phase effects, and the Revox for cutting it up. Others included New Order, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and Scritti Politti. 5. ŒTHE WORD¹ KISS 100 ELECTRO INTERVIEW 1994 6. ŒTHE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO CLUBLAND¹ RADIO 1 ELECTRO INTERVIEW 1994 In 1994 I compiled ŒClassic Electro Mastercuts¹, which prompted much media interest in the Electro period. I¹ve included two of the radio interviews I did that year, one for Kiss 100¹s Electro special, the other for Radio 1¹s club history, ŒThe Gospel According To Clubland¹. It¹s interesting to note that while Radio 1 cite their own presenter, Tim Westwood, as the pioneer of the London Electro scene, Kiss¹s Gordon Mac places its origins with George Power and Paul Anderson. Whatever the disagreements about the roots and development of the Electro movement in the capital, there¹s no such argument regarding the North. Much of the confusion surrounding the London scene is because it was fragmented and without a focal point (until Mike Allen¹s Capital radio show finally filled the void towards the end of 1984), whereas Legend and Wigan Pier were central to the club scene up-North, and known to pretty much every DJ in the region, if not the country. On top of this, the Piccadilly radio mixes allowed me to take Electro-Funk to a wider audience at a time when Mike Shaft¹s Soul show contemporaries in London, Greg Edwards and Robbie Vincent, would never have entertained such an idea. 7. ŒMONASTIC MIX¹ 1996 Although my DJ appearances since 1984 have been few and far-between, from late 96 through 97 I was involved in an experimental monthly club night on Merseyside (plus specials at London¹s ŒMars Bar¹) called ŒThe Monastery¹. The basic premise was that we didn¹t play any four-on-the-floor (as this

Bit OT I know. But I know a lot of heads here listen to more than techno.. Rather lazy article on NuJazz in The Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/fridayreview/story/0,12102,1009637,00.html http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/fridayreview/story/0,12102,1009637,00.html But I was interesting in the referance to Bugge Wesseltoft's New Conception of Jazz - Live (Jazzland) is a collection of live recordings from recent years, featuring his piano (Rhodes or acoustic) trio augmented by electronics, vinyl and effects supplied by a DJ/percussionist and a sound engineer. Does anyone have any knowledge of this recording ? Rav

Yep I been on their mailing list for some 2 years. So they have been around for a long time. I havent used them but know ppl who have and they have been pleasde with the service. Ive placed a substantially large order after wetting myself over their great catalogue - will post as to how quick shipment is etc ! Also one of the things I ordered is Tutto Matto - Hot Spot -- not sure if anyones listened to this but is it what's described as 'italo disco' ? Well certainly revolutionary as it calls for reform...had the check the dictionary for the meaning of iconoclastic.. I hope it's repeated soon... There's surely a strong link between the techno scene and the soul scene of the 80s, the immense power of the songs back then is incredible. Each new track that came out must have been a real event, and I remember reading something, I think on the back of the Prescription compilation which acknowledges that infuence. Of course, the main link is that the 80s soul stuff all had that futuristic, techno kind of sound, with big drums, big synths, and even bigger hair and wardrobe budgets!! The commitment to melody, funk, and songwriting in those songs is something to take inspiration from, but of course not *just* emulate! (Metro Area-style...sorry ;-) I personally play a selection of 80s whenever I can, the tracks ALWAYS go down well with crowds, regardless of affiliation. Man, they just MAKE you dance!! How can that not be inspiring?? I think we have seen a renaissance in this adventurous attitude in the productions of people like Timbaland and Rodney Jerkins, alongside the legion of soul producers who are trying to stretch their particular template. Just cause they write songs, are they any less 'techno'? Not for me. I reckon there's a lot to learn from such people. Speaking with young soul/garage producers here in London from time to time, you learn that the same things occupy their mind - what the boxes do, how to get the most out of their kit, who's killing it in their scene, etc. etc. Sound familiar? So, anyone fancy coming down The Lick on Saturday?? ;-) Ha ha. Cheers, Andrew

Right, so basically you need all the tunes/samples/loops (let call them wavs)you want to play on a PC with Appleton software and you got a baisc set up. Then you can manipulate/layer/sequnce any number of the wavs using the software. If so, I like the idea behind this. I am by no means a dj but I am looking for new ways interactive to play at home. Can anyone give me a couple of sentances on how this is done and what equipment is needed ? Definitely - I'd love to see more people getting into doing this sort of stuff! Basically you are alright with a copy of Ableton - you can control it adequately with a mouse and keyboard, and once you've got your tracks together and ready to mix, you're away! But to *really* step into the world of 3rd wave DJing, the best thing to do is get hold of a MIDI controller keyboard which has lots of knobs and sliders on it - map the sliders and knobs and keys to various Ableton controls (mutes, volume levels, effects sends) and before long you'll start to feel nearly as physically connected to the set you're playing as you do with traditional decks and vinyl. You can just imagine the chorus of disapproval on the ghettotech.de forum if, god forbid, Godfather was spotted with a laptop hidden behind the decks! But at the same time the overwhelming majority of ghetto-tech mixes are made digitally. When you are doing a high-tech mix, though, you do have to think like a ghetto-tech DJ - what noise can I put in *right here* that will make this a bit better? What can I personally do to keep the listener interested during this rather boring bridge part of a track? Should I just let this whole track play out, or shall I whip out a second copy and cut straight to the good bit at the end? That sort of thing needs to be going through your head all the time if you're using digital technology, I would say. If you find yourself just sitting there with mouse hovering over track title for five minutes, waiting for the tune to play out, you're not really getting into the spirit of things... This thread is a bit on the waffly side, but f*ck it; with everyone going to Movement this weekend, the list would just die on its feet if there weren't a few us prepared to step into the breach and start talking bo**ocks! [David Powers [EMAIL PROTECTED]] Hi listmembers, I'm also looking for more house. However, I have some very specific tastes as far as house, and it seems to be rather hard to find house records that work for me. Basically, I am looking for house that is more synthetic rather than organic sounding, mostly non-vocal, stuff that can work on the dance floor, and not too smooth-jazz or disco sounding. Examples of stuff I might play in a house tempo sets currently tend to include some minimal stuff, sometimes thx (Dale Lawrence stuff) some of the Perlon and Akufen stuff, an old dbx track here or there, certain UR house tempo tracks, some synthy stuff like the Heiko Laux Walkout ep I got last year, sometimes a Kevin Saunderson track from Faces and Phases, sometimes some electro-type stuff that is at the right tempo, and some tribal house usually that has a synthetic edge. Anybody got any ideas? Stuff like John Acquviva plays is often cool, or micro-house that isn't too abstract, to deeper stuff but with real sick analog synthesizer type things and not too downtempo. Artists and eps, and not just labels please! Do you like Hakan Lidbo? I think you might... What about Steve Bug? So well put !! My major grip about contempory rnb, nu soul, hip hop I like the (some of the) beats, cant stand the sentiments...I love you baby, will you have my baby, then leave me, taking my benzo with you, come back baby ...what a bunch of arse. I really liked the vocals but the lyrics to this one made me balk. I mean, I understand where he's coming from, but basically you can reduce it to: a) we were great friends b) we fooled around - oops! c) now *you* are acting strange d) i wish *you* would sort your sh*t out so we can go back to 'a' Dunno. Something about the assignment of blame in this song rubs me the wrong way, but I really can't argue against a dancefloor full of people getting down to it. I mean, I can totally relate, but only because I was being a dick when I felt that way too. ;) Since hearing it on a dancefloor I've gone a bit easier on it though. :) Tristan === Text/Mixes: http://www.phonopsia.co.uk Music: http://www.mp313.com Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If we deconstructed all the lyrics of most of the tracks we are interested in here, we really wouldn't be left with much that is literary, noble or even coherent most of the time! The vibe is everything, for better or worse. Plus, I can make my own mistakes and learn from them myself, thanks, without need of the wisdom of an R'n'B singer to teach me, albeit in beautiful dulcet tones! Maybe it's time we started to expect more though? That 'glad today' record I mentioned earlier has excellent romantic lyrics, and the Brooks album is packed with them straight through (even if they're largely nonsensical, they are great: see - dripping in gold). Dani Sicialano springs to mind too. I'll be the first to admit that I'll let lyrics slide in house, but I don't know exactly when we lowered our expectations. Lyrics used to be a big draw for me before I got into house/techno, and they still are when I shop outside of this. There have always been good political lyrics, and still are, like Blackman, etc, but I'd like to see more insightful probings of emotions. It's not like there's ever been a time when there wasn't some good lyrical tracks in house, I just think people have more room to write crap if it kicks. It's kinda sloppy in a couple of parts. Hopefully you don't think any of my mess is too disastrous. I've never actually tried to mix an entire set of broken beat stuff before. While I'm usually telling people it's not *that* hard to mix, I was making that assessment based on including a few songs in a varied mix, but to put together a whole set is an entirely different matter. It's really difficult. I tried to work it out almost every night this week, but after tonight's go, I decided I'd accomplished the introductory mission and I didn 't have the energy to try and perfect such a difficult mix (I almost always abandon preconceived mixes). So I figured better to produce something rough than nothing at all... I'm not totally happy with the breadth of what I covered either, but I really do love all the songs, so hopefully it will be enjoyable on that merit if flawed in other respects. 14 tracks clocking in at 51 minutes (the last track has mysteriously disappeared). Arghhh... Sorry Tom, your remix of Scopex got snipped somehow (think I ran out of disk space while adding a dash of maximization), and sorry folks for the abrupt ending. Doh! Wasn't 'Acid Jazz' just a label for jazzy sounds played by Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay etc in the chill out rooms in clubs playing Acid. Brand New Heavies, Galliano, Incognito, Banderas, Urban Poets, His Emperors New Clothes, Ronny Jordan and the like had a similar sound. And there were three main labels pushing this sound, and one was named Acid Jazz, the othe two being Talkin Loud and MoWax. Funny enough its very rare that a typical acid machine like 303 was used in any track defined as Acid Jazz. my 2 cents:) Mehmet - Original Message - From: spw [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2003 2:46 PM Subject: Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!) lets not get acid house confused with the genre acid jazz.
