(313) X-102
There's a cool related video thing on the main page of the Axis site: http://www.axisrecords.com/ -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 22 May 2008 10:57 To: 313 list Subject: (313) X-102 Haven't seen any mention of this on the list (unless I missed it): X-102 (aka Jeff Mills Mike Banks) artists X-102 re-discovers the Rings Of Saturn title Tresor label tresor234cd/tresor234 cat# CD / 12 format In 1992 Jeff Mills, Mike Banks and Robert Hood - still known at that time as Underground Resistance - released what was probably the most futuristic album in modern electronic music: X-102 discovers The Rings Of Saturn (Tresor.004/UR), as part of their X-10... series. The tracks on X-102 were reduced to minimal levels, looping with a marginal BMP rate, spacey and sometimes entirely without beats. This was revolutionary: listeners had just become accustomed to the uncompromising Detroit techno sound that the three of them had produced so far. Thus on the way to Saturn they surpassed even themselves, if not a decade jump then at least 15 years ahead of their time. The transition phase between former recording techniques and the computer age resounded on the album, and seemed as if it had been recorded with computers that had not yet been invented. In fact, the unconventional tracks resulted from a process of cutting up the taped material and then pasting together again. The album has not been available since the end of the last century and thus it's become difficult for the new generation to appreciate the work. One also tends to forget that very little was known at that time about the second largest planet in our solar system. Only since the Cassini/Huygen missions have we been able to gather images and awareness about Saturn, its moons, and the consistency of its rings. Jeff Mills' fascination for the planet remained intact but to reanimate the project he had but one requirement: only together with Mike Banks. Until now this hasn't been possible because since the 1990's both co-founding members of UR have gone their separate musical ways. But finally they've again joined forces to activate together their second Saturn mission. Indeed this alone makes X-102 rediscovers The Rings Of Saturn a milestone. But the innovators wouldn't be such if they didn't rediscover the tracks from the first mission (which therefore again indirectly involves Robert Hood) and on that base produce new, unreleased tracks reflecting their personal development and the knowledge gained through modern space research. 20 tracks of pure techno magic, a return to the interstellar probing that brings some of the original abstraction to skillful levels of contemporary electronic music. This is not old-meets-new: this is innovation restructured with masterly polishing - timeless. So far one singe audiovisual live performance of X-102 rediscovers The Rings Of Saturn will take place: on June 21st, 2008 at the SONAR Festival in Barcelona. Surely this must get some juices flowing with y'all?? I swore off Sonar a few years ago but if I didn't have a new arrival to deal with I'd make an exception for this Jason
Re: (313) ride from ny to detroit?
Uhhh... I think Todd's got it backwards. It's more like 8 - 10 hours through the US and 10 - 12 through Canada. But, if you don't drive like Todd's Grandma, you can make it much faster. The drive (taking Route 80 through PA and OH and then 75 into Detroit) has never taken me more than 9 hours. For the record my personal best is 7 hours in Corvette Z06 leaving midtown Manhattan at 10PM and checking into the Athenium at 5AMcould have have made it even faster if I hadn't stopped for a sit down dinner near the water gap. The Canadian route is too unpredictable given the two border crossings. Stick to 80. My only advice is do not go more than 10 over the limit in OHeveryone seems to get a ticket in OH. Re: (313) ride from ny to detroit?
Michigan cops are no joke either and are all too happy to hold on to your license until your ticket is paid. All state troopers are 'notorious' mutherf*ckers really...if they pull you over. But on Rt 80 in PA they're much more lenient in terms of what speed they'll pull you forand they're VERY predictable in terms of how they operate. Ohio cops have this odd knack for appearing out of thin air. I'm not advocating putting your foot to the floor and just barreling on through, you need to pay close attention and trust your instincts. Ease off for entrance ramps, turn arounds, when coming over crests or around blind corners, and when approaching other likely hiding spots -then pick up your speed when you're more sure of your surroundings. Speeding is an art. Ohhh and don't underestimate the massive role luck plays in all this - if you ain't feeling it, don't push it;-) Believe it or not I know of what I speak. I spent the last four years logging 2000+ miles a week throughout the NE and I have 0 points on my license in any state. - Original Message - From: kent williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mark S. Re: (313) The Wire
I've wanted to get into the show for a while now but never really had the time. I got real sick in January and marathoned the first four seasons in like 6 days.so glad I waited until I had the time to give it my full attention and watch it as I did. I recommend waiting until the box set of all 5 seasons is out and then trying to watch it in as short a period of time as possible. The reason it never caught on (in a commercial sense) is if you've not watched from episode one you're lost Believe it or not now that I've finally finished season five I've started watching the whole thing again (I'm happily unemployed at the moment;) and am picking up on things I missed the first go around. The shield is blech by comparison btw...boring typical cop show bs you've seen over and over. The Wire is more of an examination of society and institutions than it is a typical cop show...and that's what makes it great. The depth of the storylines/characters and the attention to detail is truly unparalleled. In an attempt to get this on-topic: wouldn't it be great if someone did a similar series set in Detroit?? - Original Message - From: Kowalsky [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [313] 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2008 6:20 PM Subject: Re: (313) The Wire Well... it's a good sign for me, cuz i've seen The Shield, but didn't see The Wire (yet). - Original Message - From: Thomas D. Cox, Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cajmere - Come - Cajual i found this record to be irritatingly bad. i expected much more, especially after that midnight tune. If I'd only heard it on headphones at a shop I'd agree but having heard it at Avalon in NYC a few weeks back when Curtis played it I can tell you that on a big system - at the right moment - it drives the crowd frickin' mental;) As of course does Midnight I'm not really feeling the Green Velvet rmx though.
Re: (313) Mills
From: Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] I think the DVD is an odd one, it's great to see what he does with his hands but I can't see what a normal viewer would get out of it - but hey good luck to him I say... Well the DVD isn't just Mills mixingapparently it's also got performances by other 313 masters. In NYC he didn't open with the DVD, he mixed into a segment featuring himself from it about an hour into his set and then later he mixed into a Burden Brothers live PA that's on the DVD (which I proceeded to gush like a little girl about to Mr. Mills later on in the morning;). I thought the whole thing worked out surprisingly well. and it sounds like I missed yet another killer gig... If he was as good this weekend as he was when he was last in NY, you really missed out Martin. I haven't seen him play that well in a long time (plus he seemed to really enjoy himself for a change;). Re: (313) Amp Fiddler [Marketing and music taste]
Oh- and to change topic a little bit, I just listened to AMp Fiddler album for the first time this morning (yeah- I've been talking without hearing- flame away), but my assumptions were absolutely correct about the record. Its basically smooth jazz. OK- maybe that's harsh, but its absolutely 100% indebted to 70's funk and soul music. There's not even an attempt to turn these songs out into something new. Not to say I dont like it. It will definately hold a certain place in my catalog (dinner party music), but there is absolutely nothing that's going to make me go back and want to hear it again in order to explore things i might have missed (the matt dear album had me going back for weeks on end as it finally grew and bloosomed in my brain). My thoughts exactly...it's good stuff for sure, but not something that's got me all excited like some folks seem to be. Each to their own I guess

I'm not sure I agree with the statement that 'music' is more of an active pastime than 'football' or 'cars' for that matter. As a total car geek I'd have to agree with the above statementsure there aren't many that can afford the 'car of their dreams' but even someone of modest means could go out and buy a reasonably priced sportscar, then work on it, race it or whatever. What I object to is a form of political protest that involves BUYING the things being protested against. If, as Tom suggested, for every Big Mac or Starbucks latte that Herbert purchases for use in his shows, 5 people decide never to spend money at those companies again, then he´s done something wonderful and powerful. But there´s simply no way to know. And if that ISN´T the result, then what you end up with is Herbert buying Big Macs and Starbucks lattes, which is all McDonalds and Starbucks ever wanted him to do in the first place. No one at any level of the McDonalds or Starbucks corporate hierarchy could care less what you do with their products AFTER you´ve paid for them. Companies don´t exist to make products. They exist to make profits. And unless Herbert KNOWS that he´s decreasing sales, then he´s doing more harm than good. One more time: I´m NOT blasting him for taking a stand. and the first THREE hours we were there were tough to take. Don't you mean listening to me bitch was hard to take?? ;-)
(313) NYE Aftermath - LA
Well Josh, Doris and I were representing the 313 posse out here in LA at the Sub Level Warehouse party... It was one of those parties that could have gone either way, the opening DJ was God awful (lots of boring west coast pseudo deep house) and the energy level was pretty low. Thankfully Doc Martin finally took the decks around 2:30AM and started to rebuild things... he made my night by playing Adonis' No Way Back around 4AMI was grinning ear to ear and shakin' my ass;). It was a pretty good night:) - Original Message - From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, January 02, 2004 11:31 PM Subject: (313) NYE Aftermath So how were the various parties around the world? Other than what I've seen posted here, I know TP played Iowa city, which I'd love to hear more about. In London, the Bleep festivities were precisely that. So much cheer and amazing tunes! I was too busy chatting to take in the music until about 1/2-way through Max's set, but both he and Hazell whipped out blinding sets, probably the best I've heard from either of them. These boys deserve a medal for holding out so long before properly joining in the party. Rather coflicted about not getting to properly listen to Emile, Toby and Ken's sets, especially Emile's live set, built in a day - but when you have such a great core of people around with amazing atmosphere, it's hard to get them to shut up. ;) We collectively drank them out of Caparinha's and kept it going throughout the night with surprising momentum. After Bleep, things wrapped up around midnight the next day (for me anyway). A stellar beginning to what promises to be another great musical year. Here's hoping (perhaps wishfully) that the global political scene shapes up a bit come November, to make the fun a bit less guilt-ridden! Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(313) To any and all LA 313 peeps....
So my LA trip is shaping up pretty well...I hit the Tejada party with Yussel last night and we had a ball I'm wondering though, any other parties coming up I should know about? Any good record shops I should check out (Beat Non Stop is the only one I know)? I'm out here until the 9th of January and I brought my box, so if anyone is looking for a DJ I'd be more than happy to come play;) Lates, m* _ Mark S. (313) Sonic Groove Records moving in November 2003
Reposted from friendster: Sonic Groove Records .. we have decided after 9 years in the same location its time for change and cheaper rent. Our new space is being renovated as I write. It will be super cool when finished with a brand new atmosphere lots of new products too. We stand firm in a scene that is going through the roughest of times to show everyone that this is a way of life and not a trend. We set out on a mission in 1990 to push the most upfront futuristic sounds in underground electronic music and to create a scene for it. And we will continue to do so for many years to come. We are making a move east to the Lower East Side. Our new address will be 206 Ave B between E12th 13st. Look for postings on grand opening bash which will most likely include one of our crazy parties afterwards. Exact opening date will be posted in a few weeks after major construction is done. Should be around second week of November. In the meantime we will still be here at 41 Carmine St and expect a smooth transfer with no days closed in between the move. I'll keep everyone posted. Any repost would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Adam X

I would guess that the day isnt too far off when you see artists/labels selling their output direct to consumers online using a similar business plan, especially given the advent of technologies like final scratch. yes, there is somethng to be said for a slab of vinyl but the overheads and prfofit margins for establishing and operating a direct-dowload label would have to be better than for a traditional label I would think, even if only slightly, which still puts more money in the pocket of the artist/label owner. personally, I know I much prefer being able to listen to the tracks on line from a 12 or LP and purchase only the ones I want at a buck a pop (see the poker flat web site) vice dropping $10 - $20 bucks for the actual release in a retail outlet for the other tracks I didn¹t want From: Lester Kenyatta Spence [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 09:32:15 -0400 (EDT) To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) was groovetech now itunes i think that dance music would be the perfect money maker for itunes. as dj'ing moves away from vinyl, even those who are ideologically predisposed to pay loot for tracks will find it a time-suck to continually buy tracks then transform them to mp3. at a buck a pop, who'd fight it? lks

We do all covet your mixer though Pete;-) Call me a weirdo, but I like the gains back there. Yes, it's weird at first, but with the fine amount of adjustment needed on gains, and the limited use they get in the mix (I mostly tune the gains in cue), it frees up needed space on the main console to get your grubby fingers between the EQs. If I have any criticism of the Xones, it's that there still isn't enough space between the EQ knobs to really get in there, but I'll make that sacrifice for the nice long volume faders. I think those faders are one of the best things about it. So smooth, clear and acurate. I've used the Pioneer probably as much if not more than I've used my AH, especially @ gigs, but I much prefer the AH 32 after living with it for 6 months. As everyone else has said, its sound, feel and tank-ness far outweigh any additional features other mixers provide. When shopping in March, I also considered the Red Sound Infader (with 3 band cross faders that are super fun), but apparently their durability is really questionable. I also had my eye on the Tascam X-9 for ages, because the features are wicked and it feels plenty solid, but ultimately I don't need all that crap. Get the Xone. It will treat you well. The build and sound quality is much better than the Pioneer, and the Pioneer effects get 'gimmicky' and overused quite quickly. I still quite like using a Pioneer in a club situation where hi-fi sound quality isn't the top priority, and it's easy to use, but the AH just sounds better - and for home use that's much more important... Cheers, Tom Sorry for the off topic post, but I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on these two mixers. I'm undecided whether to go for Pioneer DJM 500 with built in FX, or the Allen Heath Xone:32 which I've heard is more durable and has a much better sound. If anyone has used either of these and has any advice before I go and check them out, it would be appreciated. Please reply off list. I just find when Brinkmann stuf fis gd, it just get's under my skin in a strange way. Yeah I hear that...it took me awhile to warm to his stuff but now I'm a serious devotee. Hasn't he made records that are comprised purely of loops made from scratches he has made on vinyl? Yeapthe man's got some intriguing concepts. his live shows are very energetic and just plain fun...go to one if you have the chance. I'll second that! Grammenos got me to go to one of his shows a few years ago and I was blown away
