(313) The state of things... (was Re: New Rekkids)
Despite record sales being on a decline across the board, there is honestly no shortage of really excellent music out there - an oversaturation, really. It's just that we're bombarded by so much that unless you're a trainspotter or a DJ, the casual listener is lost in the deluge or confused by all the hair-splitting specialist subgenres. I'm a music geek, I always have been. That's why I'm in this business. Re: (313) OT (was: Laurent Garnier's troubles)
Sylvie, I know this is only your 'opinion', as it appears you are certainly not a fan of Laurent's, but you know not of which you speak. Having personally petitioned on behalf of several foreign DJ's and artists to recieve US work visas post-9/11, US Immigration Naturalization Service is making foreign nationals jump through hoops to get their visas in time to make scheduled US tour dates. And sadly, recent anti-French sentiments have only made it more difficult. Laurent has only come to play in the US every three years or so. He hasn't cared to. Why would he schedule a tour (twice) and then lie about being denied his visa in time to travel (twice)? I give the man the benefit of the doubt. You should too. For people who knows me, they know I'm not affiliated with the US government as the opposite I'm an activist and work for guerrilla news and indymedia so. But I hate this kind of lies. Does Laurent Garnier think it's better for an immigrant in France ? I can describe to him the process when people have not a French nationality and want to come, leave or just study in France, it's a daily struggle..! That's worst because not the same rules apply to everybody, French immigration rules depend of the country you come from. Someone says discrimination here ? We have some French people on the list even if they don't participate yet, and we went in US 2 weeks ago so I personally got a new passport as well, I travel to US for 18 years now more than 4 times a year and I went in US during the Iraq war. True that since 09/11 2 new US rules apply today : now before the plane takes off, the company you travel with must sent to the US administration your full passport info but they warn you before the boarding plus your passport must be valid six month after your return date. I have been playing this game a long time and still don't have it right, but if you listen to me anyway, things will be okay. Naw...you're not on the right track. I don't care whether people listen to me or not - OK, maybe I do a little bit. However, I'd never discourage anyone for 'thinking for yourselves'. Unfortunately, that's the problem with the masses, the majority can't think for themselves. I think everyone on this list would all agree with that. And if you ask anyone that knows me professionally, they'll tell you that I have it more right than I get credit for. Just look at the way my most notable former employer has slipped a lot of cred points in the 4 years since I've left. If everyone listens to me, will everything all be OK? I hope so, but I'm human. I've been known to be wrong occasionally. Discussion is good, and we all know things that go beyond the scope of our jobs. Of course. I know a little bit about clothing design but I work in the music biz. However, I'm not Giorgio Armani, nor do I profess to be. You dig where I'm coming from here? Lighten up. You don't have any better answers than the rest of us, You're off the mark a bit here. I do have a lot of answers. I've worked in this industry for 15 years in a variety of capacities. Almost my entire career has been intrinsically involved in this music and culture. It doesn't make me any better than anyone else but it does make me more qualified to offer credible insights. However, all that doesn't necessarily put me in a position to affect that change. The policies and politics of the music business have been place longer than I've been alive. It may not change in my lifetime or perhaps my children's. Should I be Doug Morris or David Munns or Ahmet Ertegun or Richard Branson so I can make a change? Why not! But I have no delusions of grandeur. What sent me out of delurk mode in the first place is individuals on this list whining and complaining about stuff that they don't really know much about. To take it back to my analogy above, while I may disagree with the colors that Giorgio Armani may have chosen for his Fall 2002 line I don't go whinging about it and act like a bitch. There are loads of 'experienced' hands on this list (not just myself and Laura) that would possibly engage in intelligent discussion and offer further insight as to why things are the way they are in this business if people made inquiries in a more diplomatic tone. We're all in this together and are fighting for the same thing. To get the music we like, no love, heard and respected. But we can only fight the 'programmers' if we educate ourselves and understand the manner in which to carry out our fight. even though perhaps you feel the effects more strongly, since you remain in that industry. Do I, brother. I gotta deal with journalists who don't understand the music, AR people with no clue but a big ego, politics, marketing people who think they're experts on the music (even though they've only worked one project in the genre), and that's just the tip of the iceberg. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] Hype, Marketing, and BS (was The Great White Hype...was IT'S ABOUT...)
This is all a very tired debate...we covered this shit in one form on this list back in 1998, and I'm old school here enough to know. If you want to know more about marketing of this music and the retarded shit that goes along with it, read Dan Sicko's book 'Techno Rebels.' Myself and a few people have got more than a few quotes on the subject in there. I've been on this list for a long-ass time. Go check the archives. Some - I repeat, some - of you on this list speak without ever knowing shit about what you're talking about, never having worked at a label, not knowing anything about the machinations of the music biz. And while I don't look down on you because you haven't - I probably don't profess to know anything about your job - just because you have a keyboard and an internet connection doesn't make you an expert on music and the music business Nor does it truly validate your opinion. So read instead of type and maybe you'll learn something. Fight for and support good music. If you don't like cheesy trance and progressive house, say so with your wallet and presence and don't attend. Encourage people to write about, broadcast, and expose quality music of all genres. Don't support those who don't...or pay to play the game, as they say. Go buy records and CD's. Don't download them from AudioGalaxy or Napster or anywhere else. It's one thing to preview it online or download it to see if you like it, but if you like it, go buy it! The internet and online mail order allows one to buy almost any record you want if you can't find it or don't have time to get it in a local store. Record sales, believe it or not, play a large part in this whole game. Support your favorite artists by buying their records, that way they can build more leverage in this game and (hopefully) make some money in royalties as well. Laura's got some completely valid points and there are a lot of heavy hitters that are in the UK music industry that think that their talent is going to save the American dance scene. That's a crock of shit - even though I like my share of UK acts and artists - some of that talent has done nothing but made it hard on American and up-and-coming European talent alike, by creating a mentality where promoters don't want to take a chance on anything so they can be the big club in town and get written up in the US dance press to stroke their own egos. They'd rather go for the big money and fame rather than create a solid, core following of people who come out every week to hear great residents AND world-class talent. You've got to create a community - something that made places like MI, Sound Factory, Paradise Garage, Body Soul truly special. The state of the record industry clearly demonstrates that somehow things have to change. What the golden answer for the way forward is, I don't know...but when people like Elton John are wanting to quit the music industry because of all the BS and politics, there's got to be another way or ways to push quality music forward, break long term career artists, rebuild catalog, and restore artistic integrity. Where we're at now obviously doesn't work. Radio sucks ass and until it becomes a little more about music and a little less about money and beer commercials, it's not going to change. That's a fact. one can only hope that satellite subscriber outlets like Sirius and XM can become popular and provide a true, tangible alternative format in the same way that FM did for AOR in the 1970's. It's up to all of us to fix it, industry from the inside, record buying public from the outside. Peter A. Other than a handful of people (who, for the sake of brevity, will stay nameless), another label wouldn't hire most of them. pw This is all a very tired debate...we covered this shit in one form on this list back in 1998, and I'm old school here enough to know. I think you need to reconsider how you made these statements. Most likely, you meant to say _I'm_ tired of this debate, rather than _This debate_ is tired. After all, these issues are still very relevent (Actually, I would probably say they're more relevent now than they were back in 1998). Did you really mean to imply that they're not worth going over again? If so, you might want to consider putting an end to your long run on 313. Among this growing group of halfway intelligent human beings, I gurantee it will keep coming up until the problem is fixed. -Beau ---BeginMessage--- In a message dated 3/1/02 4:48:53 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Oh, Beau...I don't know how long you've been on 313, but you've probably noticed that I don't post too often 'round these parts. But when I do pull up my keyboard, it's cause I got something to say, some knowledge to impart, and bullshit to disseminate. Now, ask anyone who knows me, and they'll tell you that I'm not the sort that thinks I'm a Lord God of All Things 313, but I've done my share of supporting Detroit Techno music and Detroit artists. I've also logged time fighting the Rave Wars of the Early 90's and the Electronica Military Action of 1997-98. I think I know what I'm talkin' about. If you want me to list them, mail me privately. You're right...this debate isn't going away. It's a debate I try to wage war against every single fucking day. Am I a martyr for the cause? Not anymore. But am I trying to do what I can to affect a change? Yes I am. Am I whining about it on a mailing list? No. Am I tired of this debate? You're right, I am. But I'm also tired of people who whine about shit but have no idea as to how all this works. This may be a passionate life-giving hobby for some, for people like myself and Laura Gavoor, this is a passionate, life-giving career. We're professionals. This is what we do. Stop whinging and help us make a change. All of you. Things I'd like to see discussed on 313... Why Mad Mike don't make Techno no more? Anyone ever hear his 12 for Plink Plonk as Ansicht - great acid house. pw I think this thread's been around the block as of when the Quiet Daze record came out, but I'll reiterate that Chord Memory CD is a fabulous album (currently in my car CD player) , and the Quiet Daze material is just as good. But I imagine your hip to this stuff... In between those bookends, there's clearly a downhill slide, garnished with a few great moments and quite a few spoonfuls of mediocrity. Personally, I think he's made his loot as king remix man and is ready to focus on more fulfilling projects, and I seem to remember reading as much here. While to some it may appear that Jeff is 'selling out' or 'turning his back on his fans' what he's doing is trying to push back the boundaries. I've seen Jeff at Lost, I've seen Jeff in (just outside of Detroit), I've seen Jeff in New York and when he's on, there's not many who attack the turntables in such a wanton intensity. The fact that he's going and playing 'house clubs' is part of expanding his mission and exposing the concepts to the next tier of dance music fans. While the first few times at Fabric may be full of clueless people and may be less than fulfilling for the diehard UK fans, the greater perception that his presence in those clubs will create overall can only hope to draw more attention to forward thinking dance music globally ('cause you know the rest of the world, like it or not, follows the UK music press like gospel). In conclusion, I'll leave you with this thought. Wouldn't you rather have Jeff as the biggest DJ in the world as compared to Oakie, Jules, Sasha, Diggers, and the rest of them that seem to get ink every month in Mixmag, Ministry, and Muzik? This is just the first step in getting closer to that possibility. pw gg ny you misunderstood me. i dont class him with the overpaid etc. as i personally feel he's been in a league of his own for years with nobody even now able to touch him on a good night. and it would be nice for him to give us the chance to progress with him at the clubs we all love and have seen him rock many times. not in some super money club full of people who really won't understand what he's actually doing. if he wasn't so far up his own arse as to believe his music isn't techno anymore then maybe we'd all get this chance. wasn't he the one who said techno is whatever you want it to be.. so why is he now restricting himself to house clubs?

In the case of Planet E, Carl signed to RS early on in his career as 69, but possibly, stipulated in his contract that the Planet E logo would also appear on the packaging. Regarding Transmat, as I've been told, RS bought a minority interest in the label to to release album projects, starting with Stacey's Silent Phase album (and probably hoping to leverage itself into the often rumored, Derrick May full length album). The only other release that RS has released is the Innovator box set. All the other projects Derrick had submitted to RS (Tony Drake, Indio) had been rejected so Derrick opted to release them himself. Re: [313] about moby and his corporate money he receives...
In a message dated 5/3/01 1:58:52 PM Eastern Daylight Time, I'm sure that Moby isn't failing to realize anything. I'm sure that he and/or his management are fully aware of these things. Mob is a pretty socially responsible sort of guy and wouldn't take on a sponsor if he wasn't down with them to some degree. Let's face it, like Moby's latest record or not, part of its success aside from the fact that he toured his ass off and got loads of press is that every track on Play was licensed several times to compilations, commercials and film soundtracks. If that makes Moby attractive to sponsors to use his music for an advert or cough up that cash to do a festival tour, great...as long as he's down and he and his management have control over how the sponsors can present themselves, it's all good. I'm not a fan of some of those DJ's and live acts, but some people are. Lovely. Electronic music has come far enough in the past few years that most everyone in middle America has heard of a rave or knows what one is. I'd rather see a well-coordinated festival represent to the ignorant or less than plugged in what this music and culture is about than some skate park candy rave with 16 year olds sucking on pacifiers and lying about in K-Holes and E-Puddles. I've mentioned this all before a few years back, but let's face it, except for the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim's of the world, electronic music is not a huge seller in comparison to a lot of Rock, Hip-Hop, and RB artists out there. If Mercedes Benz comes to me and wants to license a track for $10,000; as long as the artist is down with Mercedes and doesn't object to how they are using their music, it allows a developing artist to make a better living (or recoup their advance) from making their music. Let's not turn this into a Corporate/Commerciality vs. The Underground debate, but this is how it is out there in the post-electronica craze New Millenium. Ford is sponsoring the DEMF, for fuck's sake. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Yeah, it has _nothing_ to do with intelligence. If we were so intelligent we'd be driving cars that didn't pollute. If people don't recognize the brand they are less likely to buy it. No people don't just say...hey I saw this at a so-and-so concert so I'm going straight out ot buy it. It's more like I've seen this product so many times that it won't leave my head and when I go out to look for a product like it I will gravitate toward it because it'a familiar to me. That's what Moby doesn't realize or if he does he choses to ignore the fact. WOULD be intelligent enough to discern since they somehow are smart enough to have made all that money..but that isn't always the case either. i don't think i honestly know anyone who just goes out and buys things simply because a celebrity endorses them. because i think most people are intelligent enough to know that just because someone is famous doesn't make them an expert on cars, hair products, etc.,etc *shrugs* but then again...what do i know...i keep forgetting how stupid people can be... lauryn.

Re: [313] Black Flag 2
1) Having heard the album in its _very_ early stages and knowing what elements Stacey has injected into the album, I'm sure the album will be brilliant. 2) As far as the 12 goes, it's a piece of dancefloor destruction - I've been caning this for almost a year now (Stacey gave me a test pressing last January) and it never fails to work the crowd. Substandard UK cheeze? Would you call Carl's Paperclip People material that? The Stand (or Sweat, for that matter) is not that much different than Floor. 3) FYI: Polyphonic Destruction was already two years old when Stacey gave the track to Mr. C for the Subterrain compilation. It's not that new anymore, but it's recent enough that I still have hope for the album. I just question why he's gone the route he's chosen. It's these mixes that are being worked to Billboard. pw In a message dated 6/12/00 9:00:12 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: i was just looking at the billboard top 10 for Hot Dance/Club Songs now i normanlly don't look at billboard at all, but being at sea and all, i am really bored. and i realize that it has been a long time since i have been in a club, but what the hell is Green Velvet's Flash doing on this list??? that song is a little old for our friends at billboard to keep track of isn't it?? jeff

Re: [313] submit designs for list t-shirt
How about asking someone like Alan to design the shirt. If his art style hasn't been synonomously (sp) linked to Detroit I don't know what has? I don't know if he would do it, but we could ask him. pw In a message dated 6/2/00 3:33:49 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: here's how i'd like to proceed: designers e-mail me, *not the list*, with a url to an image file or an attachment. format should be gif, jpeg, or png. size for initial submissions should be low-res, no larger than 200 pixels tall or wide. i'll slap them up on a web page and give out the url as soon as there's something to look at. submissions will be on display for comment on-list until sunday, june 11. multiple submissions are fine, but please no more than 4 from the same artist. this gives 2 weekends worth of time for people to come up with designs. one idea here is that we can arrive at a good thematic image by looking at examples as well as discussing concepts on the list. this should be considered a communal open source project. designers should feel free to borrow from other entrants. graphic remixing if you like. if you don't like the sound of that, you can submit your designs closer to the 11th or just tell me to keep your work under wraps until voting time. soon after june 11 there will be a voting period of a few days. more on that later. the winning artist(s) will be asked to submit high-res versions of their works, which will then be available to list members for download to place on the garment of their choice. i have already had people submit suggestions for t-shirt sources. more info on that when available. if there's a need, i'll set up a page with a web company that makes t-shirts, mugs, and mouspads on demand. --eric

Not to take away from Mr. Hawtin, but is it perhaps because he's white? Or it could have something to do with the fact that he has a publicist who pitched the writer on making mention of him... Re: (313) Circulation Records
Not to be confused with the American Circulation (of Balance/Prescription, Universal Language fame) Circulation is two cats that work out of the Kingston-upon Thames shop, Creative Music. They've been doing Circulation for over two years now, 16 releases to date (I think) all color coded, beginning with Green and Lilac being the most recent. They've also released tracks on End Recordings. Their trippy brand of tech-house has come quite into favor recently from the UK 'progressive house/trance' camp especially Sasha and John Digweed. pw In a message dated 3/7/00 10:45:37 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The other day I was in my local shop, and pulled out about 10 records on the Circulation label -- a purely visual grab, since each of the Circulation's is color coded. I started dropping needle on them, and ended up grabbing 6 of them. I'd classify them as tech-house (I guess) and dance floor oriented, but with some really lush touches that connect back to Detroit. So I did a web search and came up dry. Anyone know who these guys are? Is Circulation still a going concern? Extra points if someone besides Lance answers ;-)
(313) Carl Craig and I/O Coffeehouse
For those concerned... Contrary to the the rumor, Carl Craig will not be DJ'ing at I/O Coffeehouse tonight (March 7). While he was scheduled to play this past Sunday, March 5, this gig was cancelled. There are no plans for Carl to play at I/O in the immediate future. Apologies for the confusion and the waste of bandwidth for our non-Detroit based list members. Back to normal programming. pw pe ny

Re: (313) Anybody have this 69 track?
This track was reworked and evolved into what is es.30 which appears on More Songs About Food Revolutionary Art. pw pe ny In a message dated 2/26/00 9:14:28 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: When I was doing some websurfing the other day I came across some info on an old RS label compilation called 'Refresh Your Ears.' But there was one previously unreleased track on this comp that really interested me. The track was: . puntang 9:23 - written and produced by six nine - published by planet e communications/r s records - previously unreleased p 1995 planet e communications So did this track ever appear anywhere else? I LOVE all the 69 material and want to know where I can find this because I know the chances of finding a limited cassette release from 96 are pretty slim. Any ideas?

Re: (313) Play to Pay
That's incredible...400 uses! This is the way that labels can break an artist and recoup some of the money that they've spent on a project...unfortunately it's not as easy as it looks. pw In a message dated 1/17/00 9:51:11 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Moby's 1999 album Play has sold only about 285,000 copies in the U.S., but it has become increasingly difficult to get through a day without hearing it. All 18 tracks on the album, plus all the related single B-sides, have been licensed for use in commercials, movies, TV shows or compilaions. That's believed to be a first for a current release. Total usage licenses for tracks from the collection have passed the 400 mark... Ka-ching!
