(313) Re: roll call?
Subbed first time sometime in early to mid-1990s from London - the memory is not what it was. Re-subbed in December 2000 from London. Lurked for latest Metroplex, KMS, Transmat, Planet-e, M-Plant, etc release info and BC seen going into the studio @ hardwax recently. And off to Fat Cat Records at least once a week to hunt them down. Still get the good stuff here but it is much quieter these days - miss the daily fix of informative posts - like a dialogue about Hamilton Bohannon and his music. Well at least there are less flame wars these days.

Twelve years on this list Marsel and you're late - the re-issue came out a month ago ;) Also, from a time when signal-to-noise on the 313 was better balanced please find below the 313 top fives from Forcefield.org in June 2001. http://www.twoplayer.net/2006/09/313_fives.php Have a look and see if you still stick by your top five, and see if you can spot the techno big-shots that posted fives (no points for Marsel). Wonder if the Amazing Arnold still has the mix he did of the top tunes from the fives? Stephen.

RE: (313) speaking of Pure Plastic...
lance, it's not all minimal techno - can't be, i hate most of the stuff.. honestly, look at the distribution site - so many labels, so many styles.. some of it like paul mac and vince watson's inluenced label is deadly.. a record made by steve picton, ed handley, andy turner, baby ford, mark broom and dave hill would've had both the idm and 313 lists frothing at their grubby mouths 10 years ago - how come not now?.. personally i think the split between listening music and dancefloor music has just about killed all that was good about techno - so we're really lucky to have people like broom and hill who just don't acknowledge it exists..
RE: (313) speaking of stasis...
Lance said: >Unfortunately the later Pure Plastic releases (starting with the Rue East, Ben Sims, and Kapla >releases) tended to focus on more of a harder minimal techno sound. i think that's a little unfair.. pure plastic itself still releases some very eclectic material, from the electro of pp061 to oscar mulero's 'a occhi chiusi'.. uxb continues to release the unexpected.. pure plastic distribution deserves a great deal of respect as well, if only for the support it provides to labels like d1.. i reckon the strength of pure plastic has always been that it can't be pinned downed to a sound, just a love of good techno.. check for a really diverse set of music, http://www.pureplastic.co.uk/distribution/latestreleases.php

(313) FW: Sign EFF Petition to Stop the RIAA Lawsuits
FYI... Dear EFF Supporter: This is astounding - in the first 24 hours, over 6,000 people have signed our petition to stop the Recording Industry Association of America's (RIAA) nationwide rampage against average Americans. Rather than working to create a rational, legal means by which its customers can take advantage of file-sharing technology and pay a fair price for the music they love, it has chosen to sue people like Brianna LaHara, a 12 year-old girl living in New York City public housing. Take a stand against the RIAA's tactics by signing our petition: http://www.eff.org/share/petition/ Brianna, and hundreds of other music fans like her, are being forced to pay thousands of dollars they do not have to settle RIAA-member lawsuits -- supporting a business model that is anything but rational. This crusade is generating thousands of subpoenas and hundreds of lawsuits, but not a single penny for the artists that the RIAA claims to protect. Copyright law shouldn't make criminals out of 60 million Americans, and it's time for a change. Congress is going to hold hearings; we need your help to make sure that the public's voice is heard. Tell Congress that it's time to stop the madness: http://www.eff.org/share/petition/ We'll deliver the petition to Congress once we've hit 10,000 signatures. This is a grassroots campaign - please take the time to tell your friends and family about this issue. Thanks for support! Sincerely, Ren Bucholz EFF Activist

Re: (313) 808 State (what you don't read in Techno Rebels)
previously.. i can't help but think it all went downhill once he'd gone.. Well you have to be A Guy Called Gerald fan to make a comment like that. How can you downplay Exel? Especially people who lived through that era. i am a guy called gerald fan - hands up.. but i'm also old enough to have lived thru that era (check my thinning hair and beer belly).. by downhill - i guess i'm getting at the route they went down with collaborations.. bjork, bernard sumner and david bowie for example.. you've maybe blocked their god awful single with ub40 from your memory - but that was released shortly after ex:el.. each album had gradually more ill conceived collaborations (imo) that were aimed at a different kind of listener.. i'm a fan of them, so don't think i'm being harsh - they've made some bad (not meaning good) records imo, that's all.. Re: (313) 808 State
better late then never but i can agree on this one. i should chip in as well.. the period with just before ninety and ex:el was the best. wasn't that fond of solaris (or what was the album after ex:el called?) with ninety and ex:el they got more & more their own typical sound, with olympic and lift etc. don't know even how to call it - but ninety in it's original form (not the tommy boy us version) is the best for me.. indeed with magical dream, donkey doctor, cobra bora and more - only eight/nine tracks - i mean, it really was an album my favourites were quadrastate and ninety.. agree with marsel, ninety is still a great listen as an album - quite dark towards the end.. it was when albums didn't have to fill an entire cd either - so it's not exhausting to listen to, just the right length.. i'd just say that i'm not sure whether this was 808 state's "own typical sound" as gerald was still around at the time.. i can't help but think it all went downhill once he'd gone.. the characteristics of quadrastate and ninety that i enjoy the most are really obvious in gerald's solo stuff on hot lemonade and automanikk, and aren't there in 808 state once he'd gone.. and speaking of gerald we ought to mention his inertia stuff - two really blinding twelves on retroactive and juice box.. Quick corrections here: digital formats have varying sampling rates. The most common current one is 44.1 kHz, used by CDs. An upcoming one is 96kHz, used by many DVDs and some possible future audio formats. A fair amount of digital recording is also now being done at 96 kHz. In theory, vinyl carries infinite frequency as is. However, at high frequencies, vinyl does a very poor job of encoding those frequencies. I can't remember the official "upper limit" for vinyl, but I recall it being somewhere on the order of 15-16 kHz before the response begins dropping. Given sufficiently high quality pressing technology, nothing can stop you from increasing this. However, increasing digital's upper limit is simply a matter of processing power, which is much easier to increase than analog technology. > The theory that frequencies outside our audible range have a modulating > effect on the sounds we *do* hear is one that vinyl enthusiasts often > postulate. But most tracks go through some form of digital processing before > being pressed these days (Basic Channel, Pole etc excepted), so the 44.1Khz > ceiling applies anyway. Frequencies outside the audible range in analog *do* have an effect on sounds we can hear. In signal processing, it's called the modulation theory. The digital counterpart is called aliasing. Both require fairly technical explanations, but amount to this - "inaudible frequencies can make themselves heard". [313] Re: Scape One (was What, Me Worry?)
yeah - i'll third it on the scape one ep on emoticon (think it's my favourite emoticon of the bunch) and the new dimension5 on delsin.. top class.. i'll add the derek carr on digital soul since it would be rude of stuart to plug himself ;) and what's anybodies thought's on the stephen brown twelve on transmat then?.. nice sleeve, shame about the. ;) [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] Fragmented records
like stuart all i remember of kickin' was the first colin dale comp 'the outer limits', first time i'd heard some of those carl craig tracks off retroactive - and it also had my mates connective zone from a13 on it.. great morganistic track as i remember too - bought it with my dole money when i was signing on :) as for the offshoot fragmented, they released one of my favourites, chris gray's 'fish & luvconfushun' as well as a lot of stuff by morgan geist, dan curtin, paul mac, etc.. the paul mac album 'old school former pupil' isn't bad and there's a compilation with a few of the dan curtin and morgan geist things on.. _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] 4Hero
previously.. I can honestly say that the price is the *one* thing stopping people from buying that record. Regardless of people's tastes all you have to do is play "Another Day" with Jill Scott and they ask "Whats that?" Then they catch the 40 dollar price tag and its over. by co-incidence there's a good discussion on the 4 hero message board going on at the minute, re: talkin' louds handling of 4 hero.. the general feeling is that 4 hero won't ever progress on the label because it doesn't push it's artists out of the scenes that they're already established in.. innerzone orchestra are a good example of that - but reprezent aren't.. make up your own mind.. http://pub36.ezboard.com/fomniverse21281frm1 and before i go i've got to mention the blaktroniks album i got in the post this morning on moving records - really worth checking out - all kinds of sounds and influences going on here, really recommend it.. our very own neon tse tse (313 monster) should either take a bow or speak up about this ;) stephen _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
