(313) icon - 8th wonder
I've wondered for a while about the similarity between Stacy Pullen - 8th Wonder track on the True People compilation and Rhythim Is Rhythim - Icon. Both came out around the same time (circa 1996) although I think Icon was recorded 1991 (?) Just similar compositions or were the guys sharing studio/discs/sequences ? Both great tracks anyway, though I'll go with 8th Wonder as a fav.
Re: (313) icon - 8th wonder
They use similar pad sounds, but they are in different keys, and the chord progressions are in slightly different. And check this in youtube doubler. It's crazy the way they phase in and out against each other. It sounds like a DJ who has two records almost synced, who fixes the mix every few seconds by pushing one record. http://youtubedoubler.com/5Zbw On Fri, Dec 7, 2012 at 6:59 AM, Alasdair Lyon aly.l...@gmail.com wrote: Rhythim Is Rhythim

Cheers for that link, never come across that site before. Playing the tracks side by side, they're not as similar as I had in my mind. I wrote System 7 @ A-Wave. They said there is only one version of the Mysterious Traveller CD. Although they didn't shed light on the confusing version names, they did say that they mastered the track from vinyl. Did he actually do it? I little bird told me that Carl Craig wrote the song but I took that with a grain of salt. I just never sounded like pure Derrick May to me, but it sounded exactly like something Carl Craig would have written. I asked Carl about it and he said he did not remember... Now I find the original 12 version on a system 7 CD as a collab when the vinyl only credits May? Just wondering if anyone had any info as to how Icon came to be and who actually wrote it. Yes anybody with any info on the genesis of this one? I too put it in my all time top tracks. I didn't know about this C2 connection thing (though obviously they were always collaborating. Interestingly though when I was looking at Discogs about this thing once this thread started although they don't mention C2 in connection with Icon they have him down as sole writer of the other side Kao-tic Harmony - which I didn't know. -Original Message- From: Christopher O'Grady [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 01 March 2007 08:59 Did he actually do it? Does anyone else have the System 7 Mysterious Traveller comp. with all of the Derrick May remixes? If so, is the version of Icon on there really the Montage Mix? It sounds just like the version on my Transmat Icon/Kao-tic Harmony 12-inch repress. Thanks, Jake

Re: FW: (313) Icon
It sounds like the version on the Innovator double cd is the heavily edited and shortened version of Icon (montage mix), whereas the trnasmat Icon vinyl and System 7/Derrick May cd version sounds more like a long jam (and much better, IMO). The Montage Mix on Innovator has no beats, pretty much. Afraid I can't do that in a hurry (separation of PC at work and vinyl and decks at home). It's where I first heard Icon either version though and it's a pretty long and absolutely AMAZING version, I find it hard to believe it could be improved on! I checked the Transmatt when it was repressed but didn't notice it being different and though I guess I really should own it didn't buy already having Virtual Sex, Mysterious Traveller and Innovator (though I don't play it off there much so I'll have to check what Matt's saying about the beatlessness - again it's not something I've noticed. In fact I'll try to check the 3 versions I have against each other and report back! -Original Message- From: Wojtek [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 28 February 2007 18:14 If someone would like to share the original Montage Mix from the Virtual Sex compilation (which I'm guessing is where the original version of it first appeared)--Soulseek comes to mind--than all of our questions about this would be answered

Oh ah um - I didn't notice the acronym CD had crept in here (wasn't in Jacob's original post, I assumed it was vinyl we were talking about). I'll have to withdraw from this discussion as I'm not qualified to comment (in fact it seems I don't have Icon on Mysterious Traveller as my vinyl is only a sampler). Re: (313) Icon
Yeah, I think they're wrong about that since Virtual Sex was available on CD. I don't trust anything from the Transmat Innovator comp. since it's all strange edits. I think what probably happened is May put the Montage Mix instead of the Original Mix on the Icon vinyl repress, but I don't have one of the original 12-inches to know for sure. The length listed on discogs.com for the Montage Mix is exactly the same as the length of the version on my vinyl repress. If that's the case, the repress should probably be given a separate entry on discogs. http://www.discogs.com/release/45170 I slsked system 7 and derrick may - mysterious traveller - 04 - icon (montage mix).mp3 and it is exactly the same as the original version on the original vinyl release [transmat 021]. http://www.discogs.com/release/2944 That innovator version of icon was really disappointing as was pretty much everything else on there. Derrick May for Noobs I guess... Icon was one of those songs that I must have played a billion times. When my first copy wore out and started skipping at the 30 second mark (as usual) I went out and bought another copy. This CD version saves me the trouble of ripping it myself for FS. -Original Message- From: Matt Kane's Brain [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, February 28, 2007 5:59 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Icon The Montage Mix on Innovator has no beats, pretty much.
