I don't think he was ever apologising or hiding anything at all- it was
(as he has stated quite a few times now) simply an attempt to make
people focus on the music and not the personality behind the music.
As for techno elitists and the whole underground thing, its just
not something that pops up in most music fans conversations these days,
at least not in the sort of negative clique-ey sort of way that it
perhaps used to- I simply can't remember the last time I heard someone
complain oh, they're just not underground anymore- give us a few
examples of the people you are talking about?

cheers

My comment wasn't really aimed at Mike Jason nor UR - although I did
hear someone yesterday saying that they (UR) will now be accused of
going commercial - how we laughed! There is a school of people who
believe that releasing records and not telling anyone, and by this I
mean no marketing, is the way to go and what to scene needs, it's dead
romantic and certainly one for the starving artists. And someone
spoke to me about this last week so it does exist.

I'm not super upset about this - in the end it's the music that matters. I
just thought that MM coming out from behind the shadows sort of puts the
last nail into the mysterious techno producer coffin.
There will always be those that continue it though (for whatever reason).

I think that MM showing his face might actually give more strength to the
UR label. People now want to know who is doing what and they are willing
to expose artists to others (discogs is a good example of this in action
-w/artist bios, etc.)
MM is in control of his image which is good. I see how it can fit into
their propaganda (going face-to-face with the opponent, won't hide behind
mask, etc.)

Just wondering, are disagreeing with the fact that they stopped wearing
masks or that the music is still great? I am assuming the first bit?
Anyway i think it is also a lot harder now the get through customs with
a riot mask in your luggage and saying that you are performing in this
band called Underground Resistance which is part of the Submerge
company and that you play tracks that listen to names like Riot, Sonic
Destroyer, Belgian Resistance etc. etc etc... these are all wrong words
you shouldn't say at customs :)

MM but mysterious to who? I could really see the point in the early
days but wearing a mask in the good ole USA just aint that wise at the
moment.

Well wearing masks is nothing of course, i mean The Residents are doing
it for almost 20 years or something. Most acts have one really good
reason in common, it disconnects music from persons. Personally i
really don't care that much about masks, with or without it is still
good music.

Exactly - lots of bands play/produce behind a manufactured image/persona
that hides the i.d. of the artist.
All I was saying is, as an image - which has been a large factor in the
marketing of the UR label - Mad Mike showing his face on a UR related
website is pretty big imo.
It's big step into a new era in UR's public image. One that I think will
push the label forward.
