i'd argue that the causal direction is the other way around - house (and
indeed a lot of black american music) came from a religious background.
there wasn't such a great difference between the music i heard on sunday
morning walking around harlem and the music i heard on sunday afternoon
downtown at body and soul.

speaking of which, wasn't TP calling it quits at the end of 2002 or 2003?

To summarize briefly, he was going to retire for religious reasons - issues
with the rave scene (and more), but then opted to adjust his musical policy
and continue to do things on terms he could feel comfortable with. He is
still DJing quite actively, but with more of a focus on gospel house, and
while I've not heard him since the shift, all reports indicate he still
rocks it.

Please let's not turn this into another opportunity to crap on Terrence's

ever-increasing devotion to God makes him happy, then I'm happy for him.
Yeah, he can get a bit preachy about it, but if you were to speak to him in
person about it you'd know that he's not trying to impose his views on
anyone - he's just very enthused about what he believes. Or at least that's
how I see it.

Agreed, there are many many great gospel house records, and many not so good
ones. A few of my favorites are:

Kenny Bobien, Why We Sing I Shall Not Be Moved
Su Su Bobien, I Can't Keep It To Myself
Vernessa Mitchell, Higher
Kerri Chandler, Hallelujah

For a release with the gospel house sound but w/o the supernatural
references, this one kills it:

DJ Oji Una, We Lift Our Hands In The Sanctuary (Sancsoul Records) 2003

Oh yes, one more - Braxton Holmes has a release on Cajual with a band he
put together called The Congregation
it's on Cajual 2x12 - the track is called Be Grateful
(and I have it up on eBay)

Cajual have a few gospel house style tacks

the weird thing about gospel house is, unless we are talking about very
churchy/choir songs, I feel that sooo many songs could qualify.

It's apparently not available at amazon.co.uk, but you can at least
find it at the German one. Not that I suggest you buy it there - just
one possibility. I'm not sure how easy/hard it is to find.

i think that's the sort of faux modesty you get from a lot of people when
they have one particular release that completely overshadows everything else
they've done.

for my nickles, you can't find a better mix CD than Claude's DJ Kicks. Not
only does it define a particularly exciting time in my techno education,
but it also sounds like no othe mix that i know is. It's minimal yet slow
and funky. Totally Detroit, yet when I listen to it now its seems to
foresee a lot of the Perlon, Sender, etc... microhouse sound.

There;s a few other Claude mixes that I enjoy. There;s a house music one
from 1996 radio broadcast floating on P2P. A lot of the others tend to be
blazing techno which isn't my thing.

And there's also the Berlin/Detroit double mix CD (which I think was a
Japanese release) with Claude on one disc and Rok on the other. Needless
to say, the Claude mix is better.

There is a 2x CD set with one disc mixed by Claude Young called

It's apparently not available at amazon.co.uk, but you can at least
find it at the German one. Not that I suggest you buy it there - just
one possibility. I'm not sure how easy/hard it is to find.

i simply meant 'faux' not meaning insincere, but just resorting to modesty
when its by no means nessesary. claude should be proud as hell of that
mix, but maybe he's heard so many people talk about it that he demures
away from it. it wasn'tmeant to sound harsh

I don't think the DJ Kicks overshadows everything he's done either

again- not really trying to argue that point. but i think its a fair
estimate that the dj kicks overshadows in terms of popularity. just a
hunch.

the one thing is - listening to his mixes is not half as good as watching

here's where you maybe lose me. you make it sound as if what you hear
isn't as important as how he looks when djin. or maybe you meant to say
that getting to watch him adds an extra element to make it even better.

I'll assume the second since its friday and just don't feel like fighting
today. plus i'll be back in detroit in 24 hours which puts a smile on my
face.

There is a 2x CD set with one disc mixed by Claude Young called

well I have had the pleasure a few times and now having been
watching him from behind him with Final scratch and Albeton
I can say its unreal the effort he puts in ..mentally more than
physically..we all know he has excellent tricks but he was mixing at least 4
sounds last September and so he didn't do too many but I think that pauid
off as his less
is definatley more..if you know what I mean ;)

I will report on Monday what happened this time :)

I can't wait to see him again!!

i think that's the sort of faux modesty you get from a lot of people when
they have one particular release that completely overshadows everything
else
they've done.

Well, in my brief moments with Claude I can say that I doubt he's the type
to faux anything - he's a pretty humble guy
I don't think the DJ Kicks overshadows everything he's done either
His 7th City, Djax, Elypsia, the work he's done with Terrence Parker and
his Dow releases - all of it is A+

the one thing is - listening to his mixes is not half as good as watching
him DJ

2004-04-02 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

i simply meant 'faux' not meaning insincere, but just resorting to modesty
when its by no means nessesary.

Ah - squared
I read that and thought what the?!
;)

again- not really trying to argue that point. but i think its a fair
estimate that the dj kicks overshadows in terms of popularity. just a
hunch.

true - the mix is more popular in part because, from my experiences, it's
difficult to find many of Claude's releases.
The Djax series are fairly easy but they always seem to be in the bins -
don't know if people just aren't taking the time
to listen to them?

the one thing is - listening to his mixes is not half as good as
watching
 him DJ

here's where you maybe lose me. you make it sound as if what you hear
isn't as important as how he looks when djin. or maybe you meant to say
that getting to watch him adds an extra element to make it even better.

your second choice is the right one
after seeing Claude mix - and he went full out tricks and all - it's like
watching Jackson Pollock paint as opposed to just looking at his paintings
the movement becomes part of the art
If I listen to his mixes I can't help but picture what he's doing
physically
his mixes can still stand on their own but watching him adds another
dimension to understanding his style and approach to the art of DJing

no arguments here

(313) A Friday Question

2004-03-19 Thread Mann, Ravinder [CCS]
Which record has you sold/exchanged and now regret ?

I Bought Another Side by Fingers Inc when it first came out and loved it (tho I
was a soul/rare groove boy at the time). Found Amnesia by Mr Fingers and bought
on sight thinking I would like it too. But at the time I just didn't get it.
Couldn't find the vibe in it. I needed vocals to get into the music, I think.
Ended up swapping it for a Peter Tosh album after it just sat in a crate for a
year or so.

How I wish I had kept it !!

Cheers

Mostly stuff in a more rock'n'roll vein - oops can I say that here?

stuff like Kate Bush, Devo, a bunch of punk stuff I got in Germany back in
the 80s, etc

why I sold them is probably worse though - cigarettes

everything else dance related that I've sold deserved it. those records
truely had it coming

Which record has you sold/exchanged and now regret ?

I sold every record I ever owned in about '96.

there is not a day goes by where I do not regret it.

big BIG holes in my record collection.

and, the worse thing was, it was before all the prices blew up on ebay. I
got peanuts for my much treasured collection.
(I have to admit it wasn't exactly the biggest collection anyway)

p.s. I'm sorry I was shooting my gob off all day yesterday. I was well
giddy after watching kraftwerk. still am. won't do it again.

Which record has you sold/exchanged and now regret ?

I Bought Another Side by Fingers Inc when it first came out and loved it
(tho I was a soul/rare groove boy at the time). Found Amnesia by Mr Fingers
and bought on sight thinking I would like it too. But at the time I just
didn't get it. Couldn't find the vibe in it. I needed vocals to get into the
music, I think. Ended up swapping it for a Peter Tosh album after it just
sat in a crate for a year or so.

How I wish I had kept it !!

Sh - don't tell anyone.

I sold about 1000-1500 records of techno/house/electro/rock/punk once - I don't
have time to list what I had but there were a lot of records that I see up for
sale on ebay for silly money.

My biggest regret ever.

I almost posted something about this earlier when I went shopping for a
old album. WAY WAY back in 1986 or so I lent a few 12 inchers to a
friend. I remember that Planet Rock was one and the other one that was
Captain Rocks - The return of Captain Rock. Well he was a idiot and left
them in his cars back window. WARPED! Not really sold...but..

A few days ago I started looking for it on GEMM...I found a few copys of
it used. $45 - $193 dollars for it

I think I will settle for the mp3 I found of it till I get a job agian...

classic tracki guess you could settle for one of the Streetsounds
Electro comps (i'm sure that track is on one of em)...

one regret i have is that i bought all those comps (when i was around 14) on
cassette tape not vinyl...

I sold all of my records collected from 1989 to 1993. I got out of dj'ing
back in the summer of '93 and sold off all of my records to get money to go
back to EMU. Out of all of the records I sold, the one that I regret selling
the most was the Chris Cuevas Hip Hop 12 with the Masters at Work remix
on it. It was only available through the DJ pools back then (as far as I
know) and had a excellent house rendition. The Chris Cuevas original pretty
much sucked, but the remixes were pretty tight.

he's still got the funk. found a set of his on some site a while back.

 shut up.

he's playing for us friday 14th may with vince watson (transmat lp soon),
reeko - live and iridite's jason brunton.
it's at the leeds warehouse 10pm-6am.

when's the next 11th hour 12 Matt. Shawn Rudiman's was awesome.

Damn man, that's a hot night you've got lined up! I will definitely have to
put that one in my diary!! That's got to be the most interesting lineup
I've seen in months :-)

Our next EP should be out in about 4 weeks or so -should have been out now,
but it's been badly delayed by a manufacturing f***up...
Glad you liked the first one, thanks :-) Here's what's coming up:

ehr002 - matt chester 'into the fall' out march
ehr003 - arne weinberg 'confessions of a believer' out april/may

I should be getting some updated clips up at the weekend on www.11-hour.com,
so I'll drop u a line then

Thankfully I can see already (sorry.)

After yesterdays posts, I think a Shake set would be nice.
Claude Young is another I've never heard as well.

But most of all .. KRAFTWERK!
Less than 1 month to go .. :O)

Speaking of Jay Denham there, does anyone know what his sets are like
 these
days? 5 years ago I would have easily rated him as just about my
 favourite
DJ, but then the Black Nation stuff seemed to get pretty loopy and
 banging
after his move to Europe, and I haven't seen in booked anywhere in

 be?

2004-02-27 Thread Jeff Sanford
Looking forward to J. Mills’ first Toronto area appearance in at least
two years March 20th. He’s appearing at Boa Redux, a new TO after
hours--2:00 am to noon--housed in an old theatre in Chinatown renovated
to accommodate what is billed as North America's “first fully integrated
Alpha Concept Sound System,” …whatever that means. I do know it’s
freakin’ loud. So looking forward to the 20th. If any Detroiters want to
make the trip up let me know. I’m picking up tickets this weekend...

Speaking of Jay Denham there, does anyone know what his sets are
like

these

days? 5 years ago I would have easily rated him as just about my

favourite

DJ, but then the Black Nation stuff seemed to get pretty loopy and

banging

after his move to Europe, and I haven't seen in booked anywhere in

London
for about 3 years now... Anyone know if he's still as funky as he
used

to

be?

When's he playing in Leeds Paul?

who ever is playing in Glasgow/Edinburgh (or maybe a northern Brit town)

Re: (313) That Friday Question Part Two

2003-05-02 Thread Ramon Crespo
As I said in my earlier post. I would support it anyway, because I myself would
like people to check out my night at some point just on
pure curiosity. If they like it cool. if they don't its ok as well, but
if they like it and tell a freind and they tell a friend you know what I mean.

I'm planning on starting a night here in Miami soon its not Techno or
anything but I think it will do well because of the venue and the music.

As for the night being Techno I would definitely support it we have a serious
lack of techno nights here in Miami. I'm supporting on one Saturday's now with
DJ Stryke. It's not a pure techno night but it does
get heavy in there so it gives me my techno fix for the week otherwords I have
to listen to either live sets from the internet or myself mix.

I would love to see an experimental/minimal techno night like NYEX. I've
been buying that stuff lately and its just been blowing my mind so to hear it
out in a live setting would be nice, I'm considering incorporating some of it
into the night I'm planning here. Maybe once a month we'll do minimal techno
and more trippy experimental sounds.

Regards,
Ramon

Not to kick off another off-topic thread, but there is a whole world of

typo, that's Innerzone (Orchestra)... I know 'Bug' gets namechecked by a lot
of dnb heads as a kind of important pre-cursor to the genre, but has it ever
been sampled/used in any modern dnb tracks? There were some decent remixes
on mo'wax when it got reissued again in like '95 or '96... (4 hero, peshay,
future/past I think) but anything other than that?
