-- Original Message -- From: Scott Kraemer Ellis [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also got Felix Da Housecat's Nina Simone Sinnerman mix (Verve). It has the original Simone track on it to boot. I've always loved this song and it makes a great house track IMHO. Is this on Felix's new mix CD or something? Any reviews? no, its from the verve remixed 2 comp. i was under impressed with most of the mixes, the sinnerman rmx actually went so far as to offend me. Finally got a chance to listen to the Meg Remixes on Joint that everyone was talking about weeks ago. This stuff is really dreamy and wonderful and a very nice price indeed. yeah, especially theo's mix. that thing just murders it. tom andythepooh.com
Re: (313) Alton Miller
I don't like it at all, either. The only mix of Felix's I've liked this year (ironically) is his mix of Aussie soap star (another one) Holly Valance! That State Of Mind was good electro disco pop. They wanted Carl Craig to do a mix on that second Verve vol, would have saved it. -- From: Thomas D. I assume you mean 'Choose to Believe'? Excellent song. I totally missed it on the first (and even second) listen. The vocals really capture the essence of Detroit/urban-style poetry--deep and reflective with rhythmic phrasing. And what devastating words: Even when she protects his good name Even while she brings him back to his life-time And love was all that she had To give It still wasn't ever enough Now That's the last act For me the music does a very nice job of accompanying and highlighting the vocals--without going too far off into AM's more noodly brand of keyboard driven smooth jazz. I didn't pick it up but have given it a few listens and couldn't really justifying getting it based on the few songs I really liked. Subsequently I found a copy of the single and remixes of Shine on Me on KDJ. I like the keys on that track alot and Moodymann does nice work with it as well--the mixes are actually quite different than the version on Silence Anyway, that acquisition satisfied my interest in Stories... for the moment, but maybe I'll change my mind. It certainly has some very nice moments. This has been on my 'wish list' since I first heard it, but I never had enough purchasing momentum to pick it up for the few tracks that were really compelling. It's that rare, ballsy thing - a proper house album. Got myself a copy on CD last night and it's just finishing for the first time as I type. At a glance, it seems rather pricy for the few stand-outs, especially in the states, so I guess I would've classified it as a 'luxury purchase', but if you have some money to throw at wax, it won't dissapoint at all. I mean, it costs the same as 'Omega' or 'Shattered Dreams' and you can easilly get as much mileage out of it. The version of 'Shine on Me' on the album is possibly the best, and so understatedly beautiful. F*cking tear jerking... Such a gorgeous tune. Can't say enough good things about it. I think it's too easy to write this off based on the price. Now that I have it, I would gladly buy it again, and may do so for the vinyl. It's something that's very hard to get a feel for while in the store, or through online clips. It takes a relaxed atmosphere and time in order to really appreciate it - as you would expect with an album in the truest sense. The production quality is totally devastating. Everything really jumps out at you. The percusion just feels so vibrant and the chords are as lush as any I've heard. Each vocal is trimmed to its essence and lives in perfect harmony with the songs. I have to say that the album doesn't remain as captivating as the first tree tracks, but there's never a moment that has you feeling like pressing 'skip'. It maybe gets a bit noodly with its jazzy stuff in the middle, but the bookends of those first three and last two tracks are brilliant - and 5 excellent tracks is a pretty damn good deal. Peacefrog have had such a renaisance this year! Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Gilbert Cohen (or Gilb-r) has championed the French house / hip-hop / drum bass sound on his own Versatile label (responsible for I:Cube amongst others and his own Chateau Flight, DJ Gilb-r and Cheek releases), and has become a world renowned DJ in his own right. In the lounge we see Berlin in the house as Thomas Fehlman, Gudrun Gut and Daniel Meteo bring the Ocean Club electro-pop-click-techno-house sound to the capital with Bus from Berlin / Pole's Scape label playing live. A.J Letty holds the whole thing together, with Nick Craddock in support. In 1991 Alton recorded his first release, Pleasure Baby, for Serious Grooves/KMS. I Like Having You, his second release recorded for Cyren is considered a classic among House djs worldwide. This single was also a debut for his vocal talents. Alton's third single, Dusk, recorded under the pseudonym Aphrodisiac for Serious Grooves/KMS was critically acclaimed on both European and North American charts. Since his early recordings, Alton has amassed worldwide success and exposure as a House producer/dj. For the last two years Alton has been busy releasing singles/EPs for various independent labels. Guidance Recordings and BPM Records were plateaus for Alton's inner growth as a musician and songwriter/producer. The Rare Source EP recorded in Paris for BPM charted in Muzik's 100 top songs of 1996. Past releases include recordings for Carl Craig's Planet E, Distance Recordings and Orange Dance Company. Alton has teamed with one of Detroit's premier playwright and songwriting talents, Dorothea Sharon on their debut single Glory for the Japanese based label LifeLine records. Alton teams up with long time friend Malik Alston to form a production duo called A-Minor for this project. Also, look out for another release on Trackmode records called Paradise with remixes by Larry Heard and Kemiticjust to follow. In 2001 at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Alton played back to back with Gilb'r, creating the soundtrack to an everlasting afternoon. The Moods and Grooves was none too shabby either. He issued a great recent album on Distance, Rhythm Exposed, and has a forthcoming album on the Lifeline label (I think that its name) around March/April. He also has a new label, Muse Recordings, about to launch soon.
Re: [313] Alton Miller In Perth
There has been a real backlash to mega parties in Melbourne - people are going back to clubs. Even Welcome 2001 didn't get the figures they wanted - 9000 instead of 12/15 000. I just don't believe house music - deep house - works at those kind of parties, maybe that is why Welcome didn't cater for that this year. Respect Is Burning got just under 5000 which is what they wanted and the vibe there was good as it was an exclusively house party with Dimitri From Paris, Roger Sanchez Derrick Carter pitched to an older, more cosmopolitan crowd. A lot of people complain that $100/120 is too much for 10 - 15 international DJs but I think that is good value considering. The thing is the DJs and their agents want to get paid, they want good accommodation, first class airfares (it's a 24 hour flight), add to that the inflation caused by the exchange rate (Aus dollar devalued, most DJs want US dollars or UK pounds) and GST (which has really hit the entertainment industry) and you are gonna have to pay for that. I saw Alton play NYE. It was a bit weird in that there must have been around 10,000 people at this gig - 4 floors of tunes: 1) trance/hard house and breaks, 2) techno, 3) house, 4) drum n bass - Perusing each of the floors, it quickly became apparent what the people were here for: trance, followed by techno and drum 'n bass. The house room was next to empty when we arrived (just before midnight), but after spending a couple of minutes in the other rooms we were more than happy to relax in the space and enjoy some quality music. Alton came on around 12:30 and although a few more people got on the dancefloor, the crowd remained very sparse. In a word, his set was funky. Lots of smooth, deep house, some vocals, some groovy breaks and some classic disco stuff. The DJ booth was very close to the dancefloor which allowed those of us on there to really feel Alton's vibe which was very relaxed - dancing, clapping hands, big smile. I thoroughly enjoyed his set as did the handful of others on and around the dancefloor. Now as to why there was hardly anyone there in the house room to see Alton. He was a late inclusion on the bill, but I can honestly say this has little or nothing to do with it. Cyclone's right, the whole gig wasn't pushed to the sort of crowd who would normally go and see Alton play. I mean tickets were around $100 each for 10 - 15 international DJs, but when there's only one out of that bunch that you know you'll enjoy, what's the point? This would be a good time to say I won free tickets to this, and wouldn't have gone otherwise ;-) Respect, and a belated happy new year to one and all 313'ers. JasonB
RE: [313] Alton Miller In Perth
Here's what it says about Alton Miller... Alton Miller did not attract a huge crowd at any time during his set of three hours. Was this due to his name being relatively unknown? In any case, he played a variety of music, from flowing groovy house to breaks to harder tech-house. Added comments: he is known, it's just that it wasn't pushed in a big way and to the right crowd (due the late addition??) and he needs to play East Coast (ie Melbourne Sydney) too to get that love. The house/deep house/tech-house scene is really blowing up here now. I saw Alton play NYE. Re: [313] Alton Miller Perth NYE
Alton Miller was supposed to play in Sydney @ a club called Stateside, but mysteriously his name was dropped off the advert... Not sure what happened. I do hope we get to see him in Sydney. Re: [313] Alton Miller/Stacey Pullen LPs (Was: mills vs .ca)
maybe i'm just inexperienced in mills sets. but i think he's great, for about 45 minutes to an hour. after that, energy seems to dissipate. i'm just wondering if anyone else shares that opinion. i mean, compare him to another giant, hawtin It's all relative/subjective innit? Hawtin does nothing for me as a DJ, whereas Mills is fascinating to watch and listen to... Uh-huh deja vu old thread. Cue change of topic. Likewise all this witch-hunting (or should that be wizard-hunting). It's played out. Can't we give Jeff a break. Anyone heard the new Alton Miller album? I am really looking forward to this and would love to know if anyone has heard it yet - it's on Distance and I know it has been promoed widely. Also anyone heard the Stacey Pullen record?? I am really curious to know what others think of this - he has grown so much since Silent Phase and I am totally transfixed by this CD, as are the other DJs/reviewers who have it here. There is a song with an opera singer on it called Juke which you just have to hear. It's deep. Cheers Cyclone
Re: [313] Alton Miller/Stacey Pullen LPs
I know I've posted on this before, but I NEED to get hold of the new Stacey Pullen The Stand on Black Flag...it's life or death!!! I keep hearing the Slam boys playing it out and every time it drives me mad that it hasn't appeared yet, it just gets better every time I hear it. Does anyone know when/if it's coming out? I heard a rumour that it was held back for the forthcoming album, is the true, is it on it? No it isn't and the album is very different in mood to that record, I've only heard the LP, not The Stand but this is what I've been told. He focussed on the album and will resume doing stuff with Black Flag afterwards, so maybe it will come out after? The album is due out 18 Sept in Australia so I assume that could be the UK date also. US is later via Astralwerks.

Also on that Farley and Heller CD I mentioned earlier is the Alton Miller track, Sweet in the Morning. It's a real soulful house song...I would recommend this CD for anyone who likes deep house in general - (Alton Miller and Scott Grooves are the only 313 related people I think). It's on import only here in the US, but I got it at Tower, and I've seen it at Record Time. Nate
