I know this was asked in the last 6 months or so, but any news on what Kenny

music for his comedy. And other rumours that an LP was imminent. I was
listening to the Dark Comedy LP this morning: a fine soundtrack to my

What's the thoughts on Kenny's new 12- I've been listening to it for a
couple of days- one side has a kind of homage to James Brown/JB's-
Funky Good Time- excellent stuff. Also hear some more Techno/House
stuff coming form A Guy Called Gerald on K7- pretty nice stuff from
him. Orlando Voorn has a couple of Ignitors out the are both complete
rubbish.nah only joking they're great- the big man's a genius etc
etc etc ALso the OV and Maruice Fulton mixes of Critical Phase on New
Religion are finally out- both sides offer some great music- MF's mix
is particularly hard to categorise- wish I remembered to play it on
Saturday night@

In reply to several messages about KL today, yes, there is another album coming
as Dark Comedy, and it is more poppy in the sense that its mainly vocal and
rather bluesy. It´s also the next new style imho, but i guess we just have to
wait for it to hit the streets...

Note that Kenny Larkin has nothing to do with the last track Derrick May
plays in his mayday mix. There are 3 tracks on transmat 020, he plays the
A-side and mixes it with the B1. It is the B2 that is by Kenny Larkin...
just an error on the tracklisting me thinks.

I dont know tons of details, but as far as I know Kenny Larkin is not
planning on giving up music for comedy. I actually spoke with him about
this subject because I to was concerned. His response was that he was
relocating to California (LA I think he said) in order to persue his comedy.
He did specify that he was definitely going to continue to produce and
perform but is just changing his home base, ie traveling back and forth from
that location.

Yeah. The first disk is gonna be called "Rhythm Is Dark", which will be
traditional Detroit Techno. The 2nd will be called "Rhythm Is Comedy". It's
going to be samples of Kenny Larkin doing stand-up, beat-boxing techno beats
and making fun of candy ravers.

Metaphor is the LP but wasn't Kenny's only other album, it came out in early
'97. He produced Azimuth for R&S as well. In addition he did an album
under his Dark Comedy pseudonym called '7days' on Elypsia out of Belgium
(Claude Younge and Stacy Pullen the other third wavers also put out albums
for Elypsia). 7 days is a much moodier brooding album, working with less
instrumentation. If you really dig Azimuth definitely check out Metaphor,
though IMHO I don't think they sound anything alike.

I really love Azimuth. Such a fun album!

I like Dark Comedy a lot too. Its the most minimal thing I've heard from him,
but the album grew on me rather quickly.

Metaphor is his weakest, imo. too jazzy/loungy for my tastes and the melodies
tend to be insipid. but it has some truly inspired/inspiring tracks that still
make it worth hearing.

but Azimuth, ah, such perfect summertime music...

I've been listening to the samples and it sounds _good_.

But... Only TWO tracks from the whole Funk Faker record made it to the EP!
What an anticlimax! It's only almost better than nothing.

If the label (or artist) isn't willing to release the whole longplay on
vinyl in the fear of low sales, I'm just wondering why they decided to go
only with the media which is even easier (than vinyl) for people to turn
into mp3 (or equivalent) and share with no cost at all.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just bugged off because two out of two of my
long time anticipated records will be released on the format which I do
not (and can't) support when playing record sets. Nice to listen in a car
etc. blah.

Still, I'm probably going to buy it.
Two new tracks to play then:

"Well, Homer, maybe you can get some consolation in the fact that
something you created is making so many people happy."

"Oh, look at me! I'm making people happy! I'm the Magical Man from
Happy-Land , in a gumdrop house on Lollipop Lane!
Oh, by the way, I was being sarcastic."

But hey, _maybe_, just maybe the whole LP will be released on EP format in
a period of time. And the consumer price would be, hmm, only two-three
times bigger than getting the whole deal at a time...

(313) Kenny Larkin - Pop/Ava

2004-04-26 Thread Ken Odeluga
Hey Arne, Dan could well be referring to a track like 'Beauty In Decay'
here, when he mentions the word 'pop'. So in this sense, it's not
derogatory - *defn. not a bad thing*. 'Beauty In Decay' is after all (to me)
a bit of an early-decade marker. I mean 'pop' here, more relates to
something where the changes and the texture are not so widely divergent from
the 'classical' song structure that it bears no relation to it.

Personally, I favor what's well done and I know innovation comes in many
forms - including that innovation within an already existing style. I am
just puzzled when people try to imitate past moments *verbatim as it were.
What's the point? Apart from focusing on the bottom line - which is anathema
imo when it comes to this music, not that it should be completely
irrelevant, but I'm not going to be impressed by a crass pursuit of it all
the same.

This I think we all agree doesn't apply to any of the tracks which we're
talking about.

unfortunately, Kenny and Stacey weren't broadcasted on the main stage so you

Ha! And that guy is from Belgium, just like I am.

Ouch.. look at these prices:

http://www9.gemm.com/c/search.pl?sid=369995602&key=81817¤cy=US&seller=
FREAKYTUNES&filt_section_ignore=1&disp_ad_format_mode=0&table=ads&showall=1&
disp_ad_format_type=Regular+Format&S=Browse+All

Most of these records can be found in London second hand stores for not over
2 quid.

And on a side note:
I am cleaning up my collection and I now realized that those new moodymann
records (2003/2004) are not that good then I tought they were. They sound
way too pollished and clean. I will have to sell them back...

The same goes for those amp fiddler ep's on Guinine and the Dwele album on
virgin. After being quite excited about them I just can't listen to them
anymore. I think J.T. opened my eyes and eares by pointing out that Amp is
not much of a good singer.

Oh.. and the new $tinkworx ep is great, as is the last record (sides K and
L) of the "natural aspirations" album by the rotating assembly (the other
records weren´t much though).

Cheers,
Maarten

That price is ridiculous, but there are a few dealers like that on Gemm (check
Recsim's prices out if you want a good laugh - that guy is taking the p*ss!).

However, the beauty of Gemm is that if you're searching for a particular piece,
all copies being sold are displayed together, allowing you to compare prices.

Consequently bargains are very much to be found, e.g. just got a copy of 'Too
Good To Be Strange' by Andrea Parker and David Morley that almost cost less
than the postage from London to Oxford.

(313) Kenny Larkin once more.

2008-06-06 Thread Wibo Lammerts
Does anyone know a Kenny Larkin track called "Ryder's Return"???

Derrick May handed (no, almost threw! :) ) me a 2-track CD-R, with his
(Derrick's) handwriting on it. "Kenny Larkin" and "Phased" was
written on it.

The first track is "Ryders Return", an 138 bpm techno track. really
cool, although not very Kenny-sounding. I know it's this title because
my CD-player displays the tracktitles, if it got burned on them.

the 2nd track is a lot more Kenny-ish, although those vibes really annoy me.

any clues?

Cheers,

W

(313) Kenny Larkin/Universal Techno

2012-06-16 Thread Patrick Wacher
Hey all,
After watching the Rhythm Is Rhythim flashback, I went back and
watched Universal Techno again and was curious if the track that Kenny
Larkin is working on in his studio at 52:20 was ever released?

Thx,
Patrick.

A good night was had by all, as you can see!

Kenny Larkin spun a really accomplished and varied set, but
at times definitely went a bit too much into looped banger/
tribal territory (for me at least) - so much so that there
were about two occasions where I just had to leave the
dancefloor, and I'm generally very tolerant towards that sort
of thing. My memory of the night is a bit faint, though, so
I can't remember what it was specifically about certain tracks
that made me react so negatively!

To balance those bits out, though, there were a few tracks he
played that literally made my jaw drop, they sounded strikingly
futuristic and I was trying to find out whether those were from
his new album, but without success. If they are, then the hype
around his new stuff is not undeserved at all, quite a few of
us who were up from London were seriously shocked by some of
that music and spent ages on the bus home trying in vain to
recall exactly what they sounded like. I'm Not sure if anyone
else who was there has any idea of whether he was spinning his
own new stuff or not?

His new stuff is definitely not 'looped' from what I heard but it was a
while ago (during the festival actually). It was musical. I only heard a few
moments though. I mainly remember a funky vocal track.

Thanks to the 313ers that were in attendance on Friday, shame about the
numbers but you know that happens to us from time to time.
It was a shame Kenny said he was too sick to enjoy the afterparty
celebrations with us guys though.

The only thing I would say about the night was I was a little upset to see
Kenny not looking too enthusiastic when with us. I know he wants to do his
albums and a little more touring before probably stopping djing, but you
know we lose a load of money trying to do this, and have done
representing over the last few years. So it would've been nice to have that
image too. I hope he had a good time nevertheless. :)

Anyway, his new album is funkin'. Bit harder than I expected in the bits I
heard, but still cool.

Time for my beauty sleep before Kraftwerk tomorrow,
Happy 3rd birthday to us!

As in "stop forever" stop djing?

I suppose there comes a time but I would hope he still continues for a few
more years. He's one of the best DJs I've ever experienced and if the LP is
that good there will hopefully be a swelling demand for him.

Hi Ken and Dan and all the other 313 members

I totally understand now what Dan meant with "pop" "pop" in the ususal way
is something more negative in my opinion but in the way that Dan and Ken are
talking about it I can only agree!
I didn't mean it offensive in any way, only didn't understand what Dan was
saying about that Kenny Larkin track.

Maybe I was sounding a little bit to "angry" or something because I can't stand
the innovation topic no more. This discussion is s old and boring that I
felt bad in that moment because like I said in my opinion it's the message in
the first place. There are Black Sabbath tracks that still have more message
than any Limp Bizkit or HIM tracks ever can reach and those Black Sabbath
tracks are 30 years old! And still people do music with only a drumkit, two
guitars, a bass and a singer why has electronic music to be always the next
innovative thing? Look at Drum and Bass and what happened to it with all its
fast innovations???

So as you can see I misunderstood it a little bit and therefore I'm sorry!
Thanx for taking "Beauty in decay" as a reference :-)

they're still strong pieces of music, stand the test of time (so far

(but I wouldn't call them songs)
