A nice message from Steve who's having trouble posting to the list below.

Can you do me a favor? Any time I try to post, it doesn't. So can you
forward this post to this list for me?

Concerning the Put your Hands up for Detroit record...
I haven't been to a club in about over 3 years. I live in a small little
corner of France, and I went out last night and I was expecting to be close
to one of the older people there, I wasn't, I reallly wasn't. They played
fragmented techno, pop stuff, even going as far as Kelly Clarkston, yes I
know, it sucked, but I had to make the most of it. In the midst of this that
detroit record y'all been talking about comes on, and to tell you the
truth, hearing that was what I needed more then anything. I was with a group
of entirely north Americans,I am from Detroit myself, but no americans,
and the record got people talking to me about Detroit techno. And it got me
thinking, how lucky I was for most of my life. I have been across Europe and
the Americas to clubs and parties, but still about 99 percent of my
club/raver life exposure has been in Detroit. I am not part of the Carl
Craig Kevin Saunderson fan club like so many of you are, but that doesn't
mean the vibe isn't there. All these good feelings came back to me, and well
I just wanted to say thank you...Jeff Mills, Mike Huckaby, Mike Servito,
Derek Plaslaiko, Jay Denham, DJ Assault, DJ Godfather, Family Funktion, The
Plastikman, Detrechno, The WJLB Friday night mix with Gary Chandler, 1515
Broadway, The New Dance Show, Rick Wade, DJ Mista Bill, Laura Grabb, St
Andrews Hall with the Burns Room, and Mr Juan Atkins. Back then the music
was everywhere, and it seemed like water, like the Detroit River, flowing
everywhere. Now what I would pay to have a bottle of that to hand to the DJ.
Thank you all for some of the best years of my life, cutting loose on a
Friday night, going to a party on a Saturday night, taking advantage of the
Beer Specials at the Shelter on a Thursday. I don't wish I could go back,
but I do wish I could hear your influence over again.
Later,
Steve

That's something I notice about the States too - that very strong
sense of place. It's more conspicuous than elsewhere. Here you may
find it in certain communities, a sense of identity (ie Greek
Australian) but nothing like that. It's cool.

That's one thing about Detroit culture that doesn't matter if it's
techno or not. If you ever go out in Detroit, almost every person
in the place is wearing something that represents their support and
love for the city. Detroit hats, bags, shirts, and tattoos. It's
part of the culture.

tracks i

find the namechecking amusing and a little cheesy too

detroit techno has namechecked detroit so many times that it now
seems as
its a sort of clichè, like rappers representin' their city of
provenance.

i just feel that's it's not very technoie. futuristic, anonymous
machine music, but rather a seemingly gratuitous and crass
statement in a
song that would otherwise have a more subtle and implied one, or
none at

all.

ok, flame away.;)

dutch trance trying to tie itself to Detroit is pretty
offensive. Even if it actually sounded like classic Detroit
stuff, it would still be pretty lame. that guy should just
big-up Leiden or wherever he comes from..

ps i never get tired of the vision's one circle...actually
i'm struggling to think of a track from Detroit that
namechecks Detroit that I find tiresome...

I ing love that Keith Tucker one off Stick It In Your Ear.

However what I mailed to say was as much as everyone is slagging this one off
(I'm not into it myself either!) and I mostly agree
with the statement above, if the tune was lame Dutch trance and the lyric was
this record owes nothing whatsoever to Detroit we'd

RE: (313) Put Your Hands Up For Detroit

2006-11-03 Thread Odeluga, Ken
I've never heard it and maybe I hope I never do, but for me it does
raise some interesting questions:

The fact that this (probably) cheesy vapid bit of commercialism has
decided to 'name check' Detroit makes me wonder, does Detroit music have
'cult appeal' again? (Or maybe it never really lost it?) I actually
believe that that mythical 'Detroit' as a place of glamour and music
dreams hasn't existed for decades in the popular imagination - even if I
kid myself that it may have had a brief reprise in the early '90s .
although I'm prepared to accept that that was more likely *not* a marker
on the horizons of many, apart from people like us.

detroit techno has namechecked detroit so many times that it now seems as
its a sort of clichè, like rappers representin' their city of provenance.
i just feel that's it's not very technoie. futuristic, anonymous
machine music, but rather a seemingly gratuitous and crass statement in a
song that would otherwise have a more subtle and implied one, or none at
all.

That's one thing about Detroit culture that doesn't matter if it's techno or
not. If you ever go out in Detroit, almost every person in the place is
wearing something that represents their support and love for the city. Detroit
hats, bags, shirts, and tattoos. It's part of the culture.

I have to agree - DJs playing Scan 7's I'm from Detroit when they clearly
aren't.
I always thought that techno went beyond place and city. It's supposed to
be interstellar - bring you beyond where you are (or wish you were just for
street cred).
The UR remix of Kraftwerk's Expo 2000 with the Detroit - Germany is
interesting, imo, because it connects Detroit with the world outside. It
looks towards Europe, something that the originators always did themselves.

detroit techno has namechecked detroit so many times that it now seems as

its a sort of clichè, like rappers representin' their city of provenance.

i guess namechecking your city is cliche, but hey...it's natural, and i like
it. it helps give the music context and identity that might not be readily
apparent to most. of course it has to be done the right way and without dope
music it's tired. and of course mis-representing is never cool, dutch trance
trying to tie itself to Detroit is pretty offensive. Even if it actually
sounded like classic Detroit stuff, it would still be pretty lame. that guy
should just big-up Leiden or wherever he comes from..

ps i never get tired of the vision's one circle...actually i'm struggling to
think of a track from Detroit that namechecks Detroit that I find tiresome...

I've never heard it and maybe I hope I never do, but for me it does
 raise some interesting questions:

The fact that this (probably) cheesy vapid bit of commercialism has
decided to 'name check' Detroit makes me wonder, does Detroit music have
 'cult appeal' again?

DEMF, Movement, Fuse-In, whatever it's called now, I think, has brought the
attention back to Detroit. Even if it's just a name that people loosely
link to being cool and underground even if they've never heard a Detroit
techno/house tune.

The video to this song is horrible and has fnck all to do with Detroit. At
the beginning it says Location: Detroit Year: 2027
That's all there is! As nice as it would be to imagine it all clean and
shiny I highly doubt Detroit will look like that in 2027.
Anyone notice that everyone in the video is Caucasian? Not the Detroit I
know.
What is telling though is the whole thing appears to be taking place in a
cloning factory. Maybe the director has slipped a message underneath the
radar? ;-)

The song reminds me of the other bass based tracks in the charts a few
years back Mr oizo, azido de bass.

The song would be much improved if the vocal was taken out.

But have you seen the video, that's pretty bad.

Plus, I've had this twice already

Random: What music do you like/play?

Me: I like a lot of music from Detroit, house and techno.

Random: Oh you mean like put your hands up for Detroit!

Me: sigh...

yeah, you gotta represent where youre from. ill play records that
namecheck detroit because i love detroit, but you better believe that
if there were records that namechecked pittsburgh id play them every
damn time i played out. and i certainly would never make a track
insinuating im from detroit, thats just ridiculous.

one of my favorites is the first local 3000 record, i LOVE that tune.
i also like how the house guys represent detroit, naming tracks after
streets like outer drive and war on woodward, and of course the
label Harmonie Park. and i love it when moodymann shouts out streets
and neighborhoods like on KDJ 16 and his forgotten places remix.

and of course the detroit escalator co, which aside from the name also
namechecks gratiot. really, i love it!
