(313) Mills talking to the Detroit Free Press about his Wizard sets, influence of Motown, etc.
...and Detroit peeps: he's playing at Necto in Ann Arbor this Sunday... http://www.freep.com/article/20121011/ENT04/310110005 Producer and DJ Jeff Mills is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his label Axis Records. The Detroit native first became prominent in the mid-'80s, spinning now-legendary mixes as the Wizard on Detroit radio station WJLB-FM (97.9). Then he became an international star in electronic music circles by cofounding the Underground Resistance techno collective and later starting Axis. Now based in Chicago, Mills has become one of the world's most coveted DJs and techno producers. Axis just released Sequence: A Retrospective of Axis Records, a 320-page photographic book complete with a 30-track compilation on a USB card. It shows all the conceptual projects, design schemes, product and merchandise and a lot of other information, Mills says. This weekend, he'll revisit his roots and spin a Wizard set at the Necto in Ann Arbor, where he used to be a resident DJ. QUESTION: You used to spin at Necto (then known as Nectarine Ballroom) three night a week in the late '80s. What are some of your memories from those gigs? ANSWER: There are many. Until then, I had managed many DJ residencies in and around Detroit, but it wasn't until securing the Nectarine Ballroom that I could really try new ideas and experiment with the audience. With the help of my older brother Dennis, who oversaw the production, I was able to incorporate various equipment setups and be more conceptual with the music. An important aspect was that I was positioned on the dance floor, in and along with the people. I believe this made the relationship with the audience much stronger. I remember rushing back from Detroit to Ann Arbor, because I had to deliver my Wizard radio show to WJLB. I remember routinely giving hand signals to the lighting engineer, Mad Hatter, informing him how many minutes I wanted to play at the end of the party. I remember things like certain people always dancing in the same position for every party. I remember a Halloween party where I dressed up as a prisoner and spun the whole night with handcuffs on. We used to have a lot of fun. Q: How much planning was required for Wizard sets? A: There was a lot. Literally the entire day would be spent searching the record shops and various places for music to play for the show that evening. When the outlets in Detroit weren't enough, I would drive to Chicago, Toronto and to other cities get new music. At WDRQ 93 FM, in addition to my salary, I was given a music-spending budget. This would allow me to find and grab anything I thought was worthy of programming. I also had the rare ability to play anything I wanted -- whenever. This way, there was not a pre-approval period, which means, music was played on the radio as soon as possible. All the shows at WDRQ were live. At WJLB, the first few years were live, but the recording and music equipment technology was getting better, which allowed me to create more complex shows and multi-track mixes. With this, I could play more new music in a shorter time span. Working with these recording machines gave me the idea to start making the music earlier in the day and playing it live as if it were new records that just came out. Competitively, I was quite fierce. When new records would arrive at record shops, I would go in and buy all the copies so that I would have the only ones in the city. Q: What defines a Wizard set for you? A: A DJ set that encompasses various styles and forms of music. Not always in a humorous or comical way, but with sincerity and passion. Even though I was quite young then, I was old enough to know the power of music. I was aware that if many people heard the right thing at the right time, it could make a world's difference for the person who made it. A Wizard set for me is a DJ set that has the motive of enticing the listener enough so that he or she would go out and buy the record. While on the radio, I knew that I only had a small time frame to make my point, so playing the entire song would have taken up too much time. A way of quick mixing was something I developed. I would only play the best parts of the song in order to convince the listener to want to hear more. Most of the time, it worked. Q: What elements or techniques have you added to your DJing style? A: Ironically, I never lost my sense of what I'm doing. I still very much believe that music is best served hot, so I go through much effort to make this happen. My objective has not changed and I've maintained the process, though it's more complex and involves a team of people. I still hope to bring new things to the listener. ... I'm still being paid to inform people of new music. For technique, I've become wiser with my technical skill. I use hand speed and agility only when it's called for -- not just doing it for the sake of showing off or battling other DJs. Technology can only take the DJ so far. It's helpful

[313] Don't forget the Wizard!
This thread is faulty with regard to one VERY important ingredient: Jeff Mills got his start in 'black' Detroit clubs. He's VERY used to very dressed up, 'bougie' crowds of couples DANCING all night long in a very sexy environment. I think perhaps he really misses feeling a LOT of soul coming back from the dancefloor and perhaps the batcave environments of events say like 'Lost' in London are simply not appealing to him at the moment. Not to mention that he played his own versions--Mastermixes-- if you will, of more popular stuff. Yes, Jeff could outspin and out-please any Tenaglia crowd he chose to--why can I say that? Because he's already done that for years and years while establishing a name for himself in Detroit clubs and on Detroit (and national) radio. Moreover, as a black man playing to mostly white, techno crowdswell I suppose anyone might get bored with too much of any ONE thingwhatever it may be. Danny Tenaglia ain't got a THING over Jeff Mills/The Wizard. Jeff Mills has clocked a coupla decades of djing and crowd pleasing to very persnickety black crowds where if you cleared a dancefloor or the ladies weren't dancing...you simply sucked..no second chances. Think in terms of your own life being one gigantic mix...wouldn't you get bored with the same soundtrack and the same type of crowd--night after night. He is a full grown man with an eclectic perspective on living. One must keep variety in the mix otherwise tings get monotonous...quickly As a fan of Jeff's, I've seen both of his persona's as a dj and I MUCH prefer him as the Wizard to any more globally popular techno persona. It's a bit more organic and reaches a wider mass of peeps I think..not to mention that its just MORE FUN prolly for him as well as a fan like myself. Finally, I will say one last thing--aren't these categories and folks' obsessive/compulsive need to categorize this music and pigeon-hole artists becoming more than just a little monotonous?? I welcome any dj that can get up and simply freak a large, ADULT crowd with the wildest array of just plain ole great music of ANY genre. Bear in mind that the young generations currently consuming the whole dj culture thing had literally nothing to do with bringing that culture to life.It has almost become a background setting for their drug taking, and in most cases involves very little activity above that. Why would anyone want to limit themselves or any artist--when there's soo much good music to be heard?? Many of my favorite djs are on a mission to 'break the chains' and barrier/categories placed upon them by the music media and fan base. I know more than a few hugely popular dn'b and house djs that are spinning music from all categories from jazz to rock n' roll to hip-hop, house, techno and beyond I'm kinda interested in the beyond atm..After all...isn't what birthed techno in the first place? Cheers Jeff...go on out dere, spank 'em and most of all 'ave a ball!! .humbly offered it's total bollocks but after thinking last night i'm still gonna have to go check out his new (not)techno style. he must've bought a whole new collection of records recently, that's all i'm saying. hypocrite - Original Message - From: Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 Detroit 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Monday, January 28, 2002 6:55 AM Subject: Re: [313] jeff mills stars again That's what I was trying to raise. That depends on the nature of 'techno' clubs in the UK. There are some great techno clubs in the UK, I am sure, with The End, etc and they are important. But we have had the same things here with techno clubs - they become very hard, they become very male-centric, everyone even wears the same kind of clothes, it's an intimidating enviroment maybe and it's predictable, which is not a 'techno' attribute. The DJs are then expected to play a certain kind of techno. I have seen that happen here as well. Here techno clubs can be very Anglo, too. I am not saying this doesn't happen to house clubs, but there is a great diversity of people, across the gender and sexual spectrum, even across the ethnic spectrum. What is stopping a techno diehard going to Fabric, really? That is another question you have to ask. It could be as simple as Mills wanting to break down barriers and switch things up a little. He's always been 10 steps ahead of us. Jeff Mills has clocked a coupla decades of djing and crowd pleasing to very persnickety black crowds where if you cleared a dancefloor or the ladies weren't dancing...you simply sucked..no second chances. please don't misunderstand what i was saying wrt. to tenaglia. i don't rate him over mills, i was simply using him as an example of a popular US house dj. Finally, I will say one last thing--aren't these categories and folks' obsessive/compulsive need to categorize this music and pigeon-hole artists becoming more than just a little monotonous?? I welcome any dj that can get up and simply freak a large, ADULT crowd with the wildest array of just plain ole great music of ANY genre. yay, my point entirely. robin... - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [313] Don't forget the Wizard!
Not to knock Mills because i've only seen him spin in NYC a few times, but to dismiss danny t. as just a footnote in the story of mills is just plain wrong. How many dj's do you know remix/produce a song every week to play just for their weekly party? How many dj's come out every week from their booth to go out and greet the crowd and ask how they felt last weekend after the night? How many dj's give friends a chance to spin at their party or play a track they've been working on for months? How many dj's do you know that ban glowsticks and all that accessory raver crap from his dancefloor? He's approachable, hard working, and has a passion for the music I've only seen in a few others. Sure, over the years Danny has started playing a bit more commercial but it doesn't make him a sell out or less technically skilled than he has always been. He'e going through changes. I've seen him throw many a techno set down at 6am and bang on through till 11am [ after most of the commercial loving ravers have left ] that rivals and/or is better any set I've seen Mills do. I saw mills in the early 90's @ the limelight and just recently (june 00) again at the limelight. Danny used to dance and hang w/ larry levan @ the paradise garage. doesn't get any blacker than that... and what what the hell black has to do with this is beyond me..his parties have soul. Whites, blacks, gays, divas, all used to go to paradise garage and now go to his party. If you ever get a chance to go, stay until at least 6am, it's when his party really begins. And to your point about Jeff Mills being able to out please me [ I am a Danny Tenaglia regular, if haven't already guessed ;) ] , well it's never happened. -pete -Original Message- From: laura gavoor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, January 28, 2002 11:06 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Don't forget the Wizard! Cheers Jeff...go on out dere, spank 'em and most of all 'ave a ball!! .humbly offered it's total bollocks but after
Re: [313] Don't forget the Wizard!
I think Laura is on to something...particularly if the phrase house club means a club where house music is played. I've detailed this story before...I remember Kevin Saunderson throwing a set at the Majestic in Detroit. First rave-style party I'd been to...in that there were like 16 djs and two rooms (a house room and a techno room). By the time we got there Jeff Mills was spinning in the techno room. Because I hadn't heard him in a long time I stuck around for a bitthen left as soon as I could, because the vibe was more of a concert vibe. People were ALL turned towards Mills...and dancing with themselves. After getting literally knocked around a bit, me and my girl went to the house room. Where it was more intimate...and people were dancing with each other and engaged in a different type of dialogue with the dj. Now I'm not as well traveled, and there could be a LOT of different stuff going on here that I'm not aware of. but when i FIRST saw the original post, my majestic experience loomed large. and though i've never been more than a bedroom dj (except for that one party in inkster when i was in high school that got shot up haha) i think i'd get more of a vibe from the house experience i described above rather than the techno experience. peace lks - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

this fashion thread is pretty lame. as far as mills not playing techno anymore, that is no big thing to me, seeing how he has been to the detroit area like twice in the past seven years. he hasn't rocked it since sickness anyway, so i am not all that bent up about it. if i lived in the UK it might have more of an impact on me, cause they get to see him more often there. i have always thought of mills as an overrated techno snob..i mean why does he even have three tables if he never uses three at once. i have never seen or heard a mix of his where he didn't trainwreck. i never held that agianst him for some reason though. he could just throw on step to enchantment and that would make his set. the main thing i will miss is his use of the 909. oh well - Original Message - From: Ron [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Monday, January 28, 2002 2:01 PM Subject: Fw: [313] Don't forget the Wizard! hi tim,, i could share your attitude concerning the what to wear topic, but i do live in germany and if you would have been to a technoparty over here in the last 3 years you would probably think the same way peter does. its such a f***huge fashion thing, its become a thing about how to wear what and how to get his hair dressed up to stand 6 inches high,,,not to mention the accesories it happened to me more than once that a absolutely clueless doorkeeper (is it called like that??) told me im not going to get to that party because im not dressed the proper way and my hair isnt styled and i dont wear that neglace you have to wear if you are into techno.and so on. you see,,,i really love to see mills teaching the crowd... because thats also what means techno or music at all for me,, learning and teachingunderstanding.. ron -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: Tim Maughan [EMAIL PROTECTED] An: Grammenos, Peter [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 'laura gavoor' [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Gesendet: Montag, 28. [313] Wizard of Oz electronic LP?
Hi all, Somone just brought in a very strange electronic version of Wizard of Oz (white label test press on AM) with spoken word rants over the top. This is clearly not the movie soundtrack re-done. We've deduced that it was from the late 60's - maybe 67, 68 or 69. Anyone who's ever heard this, or knows the artist, can you contact me privately? Mort Garson - Wozard of IZ. It's described as 'acid satire' with scathing spoken word. It's really cool. First track seems like Mills musta sampled the Moog line... Anybody else heard it?? Re: [313] wizard real audio mix
deephousepage.com and I wouldn't write off YMO after downloading a couple of tracks - they were a highly influential and avant garde outfit that produced some amazing music that has contributed immensely to the creation of techno and related electronic pop styles including house in fact if you listen to some old mixes from pioneers on deephousepage like Farley and Ron Hardy you'll probably hear some YMO tracks in the mix, and in terms of techno I know for a fact that Jeff Mills frequently used to drop Computer Games on his WJLB Wizard slot, even if it was on a third deck and just for the first 32 bars.. listen rc on 4/1/02 11:14 PM, Neil Wallace at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hi i had alink some time ago to a page called something along the lines of 'classic house mixes' which featured (amongst hundreds of other mixes) a jeff mills/wizard mix from the late eighties. does anyone know where this page can be found cheers neil - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

i would say it was the Code Assault record but it doesn't say 'produced by the wizard' it say produced by code assault' so it's probably not it I recently found a few sealed copies of a record that gives the producer as the wizard, the tracks are called 'code structure', the year is 1989, and it's from detroit. is this jeff mills? can anybody point me to a mills discography? thanks james www.jbucknell.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313]The Wizard Record
have you opened one up to hear it yet? is it techno? that Code Assault 12 is from '89 and i think it was the only record Jeff did that year (inbetween the Final Cut records). the tracks have subtitles with Wizard in the title (i.e. Without Sin (the Wizards Institute Mix) etc) but the records say produced by code assault, not the wizard. that would be weird if there was some other techno record out in 89 produced by jeff, or someone else calling himself the wizard... what label is this 'code structure' record on? is it Code Assault? on Technika? He did a remix on that Detroit industrial record. -d I recently found a few sealed copies of a record that gives the producer as the wizard, the tracks are called 'code structure', the year is 1989, and it's from detroit. is this jeff mills? can anybody point me to a mills discography? thanks james www.jbucknell.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mills is the man...I mean c'mon..he help put together Musikundmaschine and did a very wonderful, professional, gracious job of it too. I don't believe for one minute that a person who contributed alot for the better of the techno community, be unprofessional simultaneously, AND still manage to remain one of the most respected figures in the techno world. It just doesn't happen. It is obvious those promoters are nothing BUT unprofessional. GLYPH

THE WIZARD-- JEFF MILLS Thursday, MARCH 1, 2001 Why is this event being held on a Thursday night, thus effectively shutting out pretty much everyone who doesn't live in Detroit that doesn't have 2 vacation days to burn in order to go to it? I think that he's established a relationship with a venue in NYC (Twilo? don't know) that he's comfortable with, but in general he has demonstrated some trepidation about playing anywhere else here. That's not an assumption I'm making, that comes from personally dealing with his manager and other private conversations with people who know him. I don't know why this is, and don't care to speculate, and it's his business. Maybe if he has a good time in Detroit, that will change. My personal feeling is that given his position and accomplishments, it will be a good thing if he plays in his home country, and that people here come to appreciate him for the artist he is. But the most important thing I need to state is that I didn't intend to cast any aspersions on the people bringing him to Detroit for the March 1st show, or his manager, or him personally. My original post merely reflected my personal disappointment at him canceling the last Detroit show. I don't know Laura Gavoor personally but she comes with the highest recommendation from people in Detroit that I trust. Some of you reading this may wonder what I'm on about, but if you'd been through some of the drama I have, you'd be concerned as I am to head off any misunderstandings. Nuff said.
