 to consider...

the 45 hours of music is encoded at 48kbs, which is pitiful

at their 'lowest' quality should be 128- so your hours is now

if 15 hours of music is all you're looking for, than there's

also- i wonder how the music transfer works? it takes about

 30 minutes to

load 30GB of music onto my ipod via USB2.

things to look into before buying.

UR vs. Sony

2001-04-09 Thread Bekka
Hi,

does anyone know what the outcome of this case was? are they still in
litigation? Did BMG ever release the trace version or any other version of
the cover? I'm writing a paper on this for my cultural production and
intellectual property law class and would greatly appreciate any info people
have. Everywhere I've looked has info up until the early part of 2000 and
then it stops.

thanks for your time,

two questions:

1) does anyone know a website that gives a full run-down the sony / ur

2) does it strike anyone as odd that derrick may and juan atkins are
presently part of the _sony_ playstation2 tour? i mean, the gaming
division of the corporation is pretty far removed from the music
component, but still under the same company. does this match-up fly in
the face of the unity (or lack thereof) of the detroit scene, or is
playsation too far removed from the ur / sony dispute to matter?
thoughts?

Re: [313] sony / ur

2000-10-10 Thread Phonopsia
I think this is interesting. I work for a Fortune 25 company. We have 85,000
employees. We have or have had nearly 100 subsidiaries. Without being
specific, I can tell you that different segments of the company have much
worse track records than others. There is no single mind behind
corporations. They are political products as much as a government. The
management model for the federal government is even becoming more like
corporations by the day. The DOD is even outsourcing systems work to one of
our companies - the Depeartment of Defense is outsourcing and they predict
this will start a trend. But anyway, you have all sorts of decisions made on
a daily basis that don't even get direct approval from a vice president, if
even a director. Chances are, the playstation division knows less about UR
than any of us do, and Derrick May has had some kind of a relationship with
them for some time - at least dating back to the video game soundtrack he
contributed tracks to. This may have been an agreement with the software
company, but he's clearly shown an interest in the Playstation in
particular.

When I first heard about the Jaguar ripoff I thought I would boycott Sony
and skip the Playstation 2. But I think it's ineffective to boycott a
division of a company that's completely removed from the offensive division.
It does them no harm to them at all as long as they meet their budget.
Should we boycott BMG (I think that was their name)? I doubt we'd be buying
much from them anyway. This raises the question of how you respond to
corporations that have no single accountable face. As corporations begin to
exert almost as much control over our lives as the government I think this
question needs an answer. I don't have it. I don't think this is the place
to discuss it at length, but I thought I'd offer a corporate insiders
perspective on the whole deal, and offer up that there aren't any easy
answers, perhaps in hopes of preventing a lengthy flame war in advance.
State and Federal regulators deal with this sort of problem daily with
little success.

As you might be able to figure out if you looked closely enough at this
message, I work for WorldCom. If you're curious how I balance my disdain for
mega-corporations and conscience working for one at the same time, I act in
a consumer advocacy role for the company, and getting that job is what keeps
me there.

Re: (313) new kraftwerk; not another sony; syntax

2000-02-16 Thread Vince Woolums
SEAN The Kraftwerk track Expo 2000 is dubby electronic - not quite the same
electro-proto-techno of old. In this case, the bootlegger (read: remixer)
is simply putting a techno/dancefloor face on the new track. This doesn't
mean it's any good tho!
(BTW - How are things Sean? Interested in coming back to IC sometime?
Where's that new album?!?)

ASKEW The remixer has ties to many artists in Germany and New York, and
furthermore, it is my understanding that the boot is in a *small* run by
people respectful of artists' rights. There will be one source worldwide to
find this particular record. This is not another Sony/UR situation.
Although I do not know the remixer personally, I am familiar with his work.
And since I haven't heard the remix yet I can't vouch for it being any good.
We'll see in a couple of weeks when it come back from the plant.

SYNTAX Speaking of Sony/UR/Jaguar, please write to Syntax Distribution and
encourage them to remove Type - Jaguar from their stock. I speak for (at
least!) a few listmembers who were disappointed to see Syntax first send out
a long mail detailing the copyright situation, only to find the Sony record
in question added to their stock list 3 weeks later!! Surprisingly, Watts
has not picked the cover up - in fact they are distributing Rolondo's Jaguar
this week. Cheers to that, at least.

In 2000 bootlegs are reserved for new-release/hard to buy-off/still in

(313) Re: techno and blue/ur/bmg/sony/oldham et al (long)

2000-02-07 Thread Andrew Duke
the majors often do whatever it takes to
makes $, that's just the way some people
run their businesses. look at the UR versus
sony and bmg thing. sadly yet another case
of money vs. music. writers, on the other
hand, shouldn't be writing solely for the sake of $,
they should have some sort of interest int he
truth, and have a responsibility to do research,
get the facts, etc. calling blue techno is
at first glance a minor thing, but in the whole
scheme of things it's symptomatic of a greater
problem as a whole in the mass media when
it comes to writing about techno. in short,
it's lazy journalism, as far as i can see, but it also
propagates this --ism, this ignorant fear of the other that
is the basis of racism, homophobia, sexism, et al. this
lack of thinking that shoves techno and things
we hold dear into this other corner so those
who *don't know* can continue to educate
the public with their misunderstanding and misinformation.
(i'll digress for a minute: cleaning up at my
old house at the end of january, it was a literally
freezing cold day and this young man was running
down the street in front of my old place in his
bare feet with just shorts and a t shirt on. my girlfriend
said hmm, must be drunk, but even drunk people
have a bit more sense than that. yesterday, waiting
for the bus, again, it was a freezing cold day. everyone
at the bus stop had on winter jackets, hats, gloves, scarves,
etc. but this one man had on just jeans and a *t shirt*.
people were freaking out behind his back oh my god,
this guy is wearing just a t shirt outside and it's like
minus ten below (celcius)) thinking he was some sort
of crazy man. well, it's likely that he (and the bare foot man)
were having a manic
episode (bipolar or schizophrenic) and they just didn't realize
how cold it was because the weather was not registering
with them. i was standing right next to the man at the bus stop and he wasn't
even shivering, wasn't exhibiting anything to show that his
body was even registering the cold. but, because he was
different, this other, people just couldn't deal with it. back
to the techno thing: writers and people who can't deal with
techno, either because they're unfamiliar with what techno
really is or because they are content with the mainstream
status quo, exhibit this fear of the other when they hear
something they don't know/understand and think aha!--techno.
so these journalists who don't have a clue what
techno is often call something techno
when they really mean i don't know what
to call this. that blue track is just european
dance music that comes from stuff like
culture beat, technotronic, real mccoy, etc. but a journalist
who doesn't know this simply thinks hmmm,
this doesn't sound like the dance music i know
like madonna, so, HEY, it must be TECHNO.
(i had a guy call my halifax radio show and say
he really liked what he was hearing. think i
was playing something 313 at the time. but then
the first thing he mentioend was that damn blue
track and how it was so underground and he could
only get it on this one certain compilation and how
he loved techno. etc. i tried to explain that because
the song was hard to find on a compilation and new
to him, it didn't make it techno, but i don't think he
really understood. it's things like that that frustrate.
how can you present atkins, bell, hood, et al to
people who think blue is techno? alan oldham mentioned
this general area in a recent interview: it's near impossible
to get detroit techno respect/understanding in north
america in the mainstream when you've got mainstream
media propogating things like eiffel 65's blue = techno.
again, it seems like a silly thing to discuss on 313, but
it's the little things like this that can often have a big effect.
the word techno *needs* have meaning, but the misuse
of it takes that true meaning away and dilutes it for those
who really are techno. rolando's jaguar is truly a techno classic,
and, setting aside the greed and copyright violation aspects
of the ur/sony/bmg case, it's diluting a classic to do such
a horrible cover/grab version. people might hear that
cover/grab version *first* (or might never hear the real
version) and think oh, so 'that's techno'!. we definitely
don't want that.
more: not sure if you've heard of the jazz artist
jerry granelli, but he did an album with a local
hip hop artist here (stinkin' rich) in halifax and the album got
reviewed last week by a halifax writer who usually only
writes about *classical* music. he wrote that the
album had jazz, hip hop, and even techno material.
i have a promo of the album in question and it's got
the jazz and the hip hop, but i don't have a friggin'
clue how this local writer got the word techno in
there, unless, because he's used to writing about
classical music only, he just thought hmmm, i don't
know what this is, so HEY, it must be TECHNO.
again, that's lazy journalism, and, being a writer myself,
i get really really pissed off about that. here in halifax

Sand,
Yes, I got the same form letter from Dirk. I responded back to him and
Dirk's boss in regards to the fact that they have not payed any royalties for
their release of the product nor have they provided a public apology in
regards to it. They are definitely not out of the game. They would like to
delude us into thinking that and pass the buck onto BMG. I urge you to
continue to contact Dirk, Dirk's Boss and the rest of SONY and especially BMG
and let them know that you as a consumer are expressing your beliefs to them.
That we do not have any type of legal action that we can take as consumers
but what we can do as a consumer is to ensure that we continue to Boycott
them and their affiliates (BMG - Random House - Windham Hill - RCA Records -
Arista Records - Deconstruction - Logic Records) (Sony - Epic Records -
Columbia - Loaded - Creation - Incredible Records - Relativity) will continue
to provide the media and inform other consumers of this pressing issue. With
the impending merger of Sony Music and BMG to make the largest Record Label in
the World, they need to know how we feel and will act. As a consumer, I will
try to spread this as far as possible. From writing to my local newspaper to
contacting the New York Post.

Boycott Sony!

Hello, Unfortunatetly their has not been enough press written up on this
subject. I have put up a page (http://www.RenegadeRhythms.com/ur/) to try to
make it easier to see the chronological order of the entire issue. The page
itself needs quite a bit of work (which I'll be doing this weekend!), but the
information itself is their. Most of the correspondence that has gone on
between UR and Sony. As well as the correspondence that has been going on From
UR BMG. I have included a links (www.RenegadeRhythms.com/ur/links.html)
section that includes the articles that I have run across. Supposedly XLR8R
and URB have some items coming up but I haven't seen them yet. This months
Jockey Slut has a brief mention in the news section... but I don't think they
are online any more.
UK magazines Muzik and DJMag have stories on this but I haven't been able to
find them online either... (any one care to scan and send me all these
articles?) www.dancesite.com had an article up last week but it's down now. I
do have a local copy of it if you would like. I am currently waiting
permission from the publishers for reposting on my site. That's the sad fact
at this point. Not enought press on this very IMPORTANT issue for all
musicians.
So once again , I would like to have a call to arms for the Underground.
BMG has released a video of the cover that is now playing on German TV and the
last I heard, the cover was #4 in the German Dance music charts. To top all
of this off, Sony still has not payed any royalties nor provided a public
apology for their part in all of this. I urge everybody to contact SONY, BMG
Bertelsmann to let them know how their actions are being viewed. Please
contact your local press as well as all the national press that you can find.
Remember YOU WILL BE NEXT!

Boycott BMG/SONY,
David (a concerned consumer)

(313) UR vs Sony in Mixer mag?

2000-01-27 Thread Seth
Forgive me if someone has mentioned this already...

I was at a newstand today and noticed that the current issue of Mixer
magazine has a cover story on Underground Resistance vs Sony. I opened
the magazine to the table of contents and couldn't find it listed anywhere.
I didn't have the patience to wade through all the awful trance ads and
paul okenfouled articles to find it. Did anyone else? It would be
interesting to see how they cover the situation.

I glossed over the article, primarily because it was covered like most of
the other articles on this subject that I have seen. They presented the
facts and little more (a good thing imo).

I'll dig up the article and post it if there is interest. Otherwise I
can just Email it to you privately Seth.

Re: (313) BMG and Sony

2000-01-18 Thread George M. Smiley
That's the way a company shows profit--fire folks, drop
artists, increase your own pay, but at a percentage that
 won't make shareholders freak out.

Bertelsmann isn't a publically traded company. The only
'shareholders' in this case are two non-profit foundations
and the Mohn family (which was responsible for the
transfer of shares to the foundations in the first place).
Strange as it may seem, not all companies (large or
small) are completely lacking in for lack of a better
word - culture.

The problem is, of course, there is no musical outlook, no
creative outlook to say, are we stronger musically? Do we
have a broader range of acts to complement each other
and create a powerful entertainment entity? These are
the questions that the financial bottom line will not answer.

From what I understand they have a long standing tradition of
supporting the arts independent of profit. If I recall correctly
their primary goal is to 'contribute to the advancement of
society'. Not exactly the standard 'build shareholder
value' mission statement.

Independant of the above I wouldn't worry too much about
this rumor though as it seems completely off base.

(313) Sony/BMG, what's the difference?

2000-01-17 Thread Otto Koppius
Okay, so we all know what happened with the Sony Jaguar cover
mysteriously going to Bertelsmann/BMG. Now read the following:

In this week's issue (nr. 3) of German mag Der Spiegel, Bertelsmann CEO
Thomas Middelhoff is quoted as saying The takeover of a music firm has
priority. Sony Music and EMI are candidates.

Sony Music or EMI?
Gosh, I wonder which of the two that is going to be...

It's all falling into place now...

full article (in German though)

This is getting good. Does anybody know if Sony is hosting a party at WMC?

Might be worth the conference pass price just to walk in wearing a t-shirt
that says, Sony stole my track too.

Are http://www.derrickmay.com/ and http://www.jeffmills.com/ spoken for now?

If Sony decides to own www.jeffmills.com, what's wrong with me starting
my own website called www.jeffmills.cow or something like that -- I mean
*it is* a different name.

RE: (313) Sony seeks musician domain names for life

Because domain name servers currently don't recognize (and won't propogate)
domain names that end in something other than .com (.org., .net, .gov.,
.edu, etc). You'd type in www.jeffmills.cow and get a page not found
error essentially.
