very strange indeed. Hello Amar and everybody, The problem seems to have gone since I detached a cable which connected my mp3 player. I left the cord plugged into the USB port for about two years. When necessary, I plugged my transcend mp3 player on one end of the cord. But the other edn of the cord was always attached to the pc. Yesterday I noticed the change after I removed the cord. Meanwhile, I attempted so many things, like I disabled one port, uninstalled the unknown device and even changed my antifirus from nod32 to avast. The port is all right. I tested it. Basically it’s sharing one all their experiences along with knowledge no way the tool best suits you could best suit to me or anybody else, for sure. Re: [AI] Pakistan blind cricketers denied UK visa
I could not think it a ‘plain stupidity’ UK to do that. Security of the country should be seen in much larger perspective than mere parameters of ‘blind or no blind’. This is the most beautiful part of UK policy I always appreciate that it doesn’t play hypocrisy in Indian contexts like that of USA to reprimand Pak once then support it underneath when things subside. I know a blind person may not be capable to do all that UK suspects, can’t he be made to do that when ladies can be utilized to prove human bombs? It’s not here Pakistant in question, any international events/issues should not be seen in any nation’s particular perspective. Re: [AI] extremely severe problem, help please!
Hai Amar: The problem with explanations is that while it clarifies one thing, you invariably get another doubt, which means at the end of the process you would have a lengthy mail transcript. I hope you are ok with this, since I need further clarifications on your mail below. 1. If Whide Space saves all the deleted data, is there a way of accessing it? I have lost some important files from my PC, which, I gues, must have got accidentally deleted. I would like to access them and that is why I am asking you this. If I am formatting my system and want to install Windows 7 instead of Windows XP which I am using currently, is this possible? Will my system respond normally? Why do you say formatting must be done with sighted help? Does this mean there are no accessible way to do this --through some form of TTS based software? Subramani -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Amar Jain Sent: Monday, August 17, 2009 8:55 PM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: Re: [AI] extremely severe problem, help please! Respected Subramani Sir the Great, Fragmentation occurs when the operating system cannot or will not allocate enough contiguous space to store a complete file as a unit, but instead puts parts of it in gaps between other files (usually those gaps exist because they formerly held a file that the operating system has subsequently deleted or because the operating system allocated excess space for the file in the first place). Larger files and greater numbers of files also contribute to fragmentation and consequent performance loss. Defragmentation attempts to alleviate these problems. A defragmentation program must move files around within the free space available to undo fragmentation. This is a memory intensive operation and cannot be performed on a file system with no free space. The above explaination was copied from one site. Now I will try to explain what does formatting means. When we format our computer, our operating system gets deleted. Before we can use any hard disk, we need to setup some basic structure like partitions. Now when we format hard disk, we delete the operating system, the temperary files, the unused registry keys and lot more things. When we use format, there are two options one is quick format and other is normal format. If we use quick format, the temperary files etc are not deleted. I always recommend normal format. With this, I will also talk about the term wipe space. You must have hurd that even if you have deleted some file from computer, you can recover it using data recovery softwares. Have you ever wondered why so? Because there is one term wipe space. It stores the information of deleted files etc. So if normal format is used, we delete that wipe space too. If you are using CCleaner, then in advance options you must have seen a check box of clear wipe space. But it consumes lot of time. Sir I am not a tech expert, but still sharing whatever I know. So please excuse me for the errors. I really don't know about the precautions to be taken while defragging. For defragmenting, please do as this: Go to StartAll programsAccesseriesSystem toolsDisk Defragmenter. Select the drive to be defragmented from the list view, once analyze it, and then click on defragment button. Formatting requires sighted assistance. Backup the data before formatting. Insert the windows cd, if it autoruns, exit. Restart, and keep pressing enter right after restart means, before your windows welcome screen comes. Like how we go into bios or safe mode etc. Pressing enter should start booting from cd, if it doesn't, bios settings needs to be changed. Can't describe that, it is bit difficult. Once successfully booted from cd, follow the screen instructions, and you can format. Again, sighted assistance is required everywhere while formatting since no sound is there to help us. I don't say formatting is difficult or risky like other computer experts, the only thing is that it requires your attention and understanding of the instructions. For sure, once attention goes and misunderstanding comes, everything is gone! And otherwise, no risk, no game! Hope I was of bit help. Sure there is no way of any voices being running it, because The hard disk will be formatted and everything will be cleanly wiped out/washed out. Secondly, no voices can run, because, you see, because the OS must load and direct things how it must go. So booting is important for that as well. So TTS voices cannot run as well. Hello, If you plan to format a single partition, it is accessible and you can do that easily but remember you can not format the master / OS partition which is generally c:. Check disk management in control panel. If you plan to format it completely, then you should take the help of some sighted person though I know some blind geeks who do that on their own by memorizing all the steps. There are ways to install OS independently but not XP or Vista, one can install Ubuntu, Knop etc of linux distro as the live CD can start Screen reader. Re: [AI] extremely severe problem, help please!
Respected Sir, Please feel free to ask anytime. I shall try to satisfy you with my answers. First answer to your wipe space question: If you have not formatted your computer after deleting your files using normal format option, then I'm sure you can recover your file. Sometimes one of your file may not be recoverable but chances are that you can recover your file. Let me remind all readers about one post of our accessindian Ruchir Falodiya for Recuva--A file recovery software. There are other softwares too for this purpose. Now second answer for your format question: Sir why I say sighted help is because when we format, we do not have any screen reader available with us. Means, windows xp vista or 7 does not give you this option which is available in linix and yubuntoo. I have seen people who can memorize all the steps involved in formatting and can do at their own. But I don't find that very easy that's why I tell you or everyone to take sighted assistance. There are ways to format at your own like using automated installer, but in that you have to take help of some sighted while selecting partition. And, setting up automated installer is not that easy again. I have also hurd podcasts of people where they are using USB sound card but again that is not cheap option. And no chance of using any screen reader because when OS gets formatted, we do not have sound. If you have more questions, I'll be glad to answer. The purpose of long mail is to clearify and give you the good idea of what the subject is about. Re: [AI] How could a blind man watch the snow?
Hai Sandeep: The idea of the article is to explain how even silence can communicate. The blind man's story was basically to emphasise this point. I wouldn't classify this article as an insensitive portrayal of a blind man's experience. In fact, I was discussing withsomeone how even television and film media is finding it hard to bring the blind man's experience on the screen. The problem is they should show the experiences from his point of view without showing darkness or blurred picture since that may not hold the viewer's attention for a long time. They are yet to solve this in Hollywood and in TV. So, like how we have limitations in expressing ourself, we must give allowance for the limitations of a sighted person as well. I totally agree with you, Harish. Just as you've written, I am totally blind, yet I don't feel blackness at any time. Something keeps moving all the time and I always visualize people and even sounds and scenes. As for the article is concerned, yes, primary point is precisely as you said, how a blind man experiences a phenomena like falling snow, although the writer has given too much emphasis on the word silence. So our friends should not lose sight of the main point, not getting distracted either by the beauty of the words or by the absence of more details on how the blind man actually felt. In fact, if any of us has actually felt a snow fall, he/she must come forward and tell us about it. Regards, Sandeep At 06:49 AM 18-08-09, you wrote: Hi Subramani May be, However, the primary inquiry is how a blind person experience a visual stimuli. He later goes on to hypothise by the use of silence. How can a blind person feel happy in a snowfall which is a visual treat. How can he elicit response without the stimuli. This I guess is what he was trying to answer. For a sighted vision is the most important sensory input. experiencing snow is a multi sensoryactivity. So you have the touch, the ambient noise and even some arroma floating in that area which in entirety contributes to the feeling of joy. Absence of this visual input seems such a calaminity that the sighted can't appreciate the other sensory organs and dub that the other sense organs become sharper. This is what I call the mindset. There is one more thing that one can share on this subject. I am as such totally blind and can't percieve light. However, I don't experience darkness even under total dark condition. There is always something moving and some light and I guess my visual cortex would be active. With the cues comming in I tend to build up a visual frame and I don't do it deliberately. If I read a book which is well described visually and the voice is well modulated I do enjoy it visually as I was watching a movie. How is it with you guys? Should be interesting to exchange notes on it. I do fear this would generate heat on the list. I'll pull the plug when it becomes very hot. [AI] Life beyond the CAT
Though the Common Aptitude Test is considered the mother of all competitive exams, there are many other exams worth their mettle. These exams are quite similar to the CAT with only minor peculiarities. Some of these exams are: 1. IIFT: (Exam Date: Nov 22, 2009. Peculiarity: General Knowledge) Static and current GK questions are asked. One interesting feature is that most of these questions appear in a table form, and you need to match the columns correctly. 2. JMET: (Exam Date: Dec 13, 2009. Peculiarity: Higher Math) Since JMET is meant for engineers, there are several questions on Higher Math. Questions on Limits, Derivatives, Integration, Matrices and Vector Algebra are common. 3. SNAP: (Exam Date: Dec 20, 2009. Peculiarity: General Awareness) Questions range from areas of Business to Science. 4. XAT: (Probable exam date: Jan, 10 2010. Peculiarity: Questions on Management Decision Making) Three things differentiate XAT from other exams: 1. Progressive negative marking (-0.33 for the first five errors in each section, and -0.5 for any mistake thereafter), 2. The Management Decision Making Questions and 3. The Essay to be written at the end of 2 hours. The Decision making questions in the XAT are short case studies. A small case is described - either a complex business situation or a complex human life situation - followed by either a single question or 2 or 3 questions. Options ask you to choose the correct course of action or the decision after analysing the situation. 5. CET: (Probable exam date: Feb 14, 2010.Peculiarity: Syllogisms, Visual Reasoning) CET differs from other exams in 3 ways: 1. There are no Sections 2. There are no negative marks. 3. Emphasis on Visual Reasoning and other logic questions. Question types like Puzzles, Syllogisms, Decision Making, Sequential Output Tracing and Visual Reasoning questions are found only in CET. The 30 questions on Visual Reasoning are questions based on pictorial logic. You are given a set of figures that are bound by some logic. You need to understand this logic and choose the correct option. Apart from the above, NMAT (Probable Date: Dec 27, 2009) and FMS (Probable Date: Jan 17, 2010) are other two important exams. - Manish Salian, Head - Academics, Faculty - Quant, DI and Reasoning, CPLC Regards, Vishnu Information transmitted by this e-mail is proprietary to MphasiS, its associated companies and/ or its customers and is intended for use only by the individual or entity to which it is addressed, and may contain information that is privileged, confidential or exempt from disclosure under applicable law. Re: [AI] interactive Cd's
Hi all, 1. Free copies will not cut it. Please remember that we are a very small market. It is not worth the publishers while to consider accessibility unless there are other people will benefit from the same adjustment. 2. I have been given to understand that the Indian copyright law does permit fair use so, that provision needs to be highlighted when discussing with publishers. I do not have any more information on this. 3. We need to come up with concrete suggestions to give to publishers for making their software accessible. It is easy to say make so-and-so in a certain way but technically, we need to tell them what will be required. Remember, software developers know nothing about accessibility and they are surprised when adaptive technology is demonstrated to them. 4. Large organisations that serve the blind need to carry out active lobbying to promote the cause of accessible education material. This needs to be extended to education software as well. I know about one such CD, when I was preparing for clat, my father bought a cd for me of Maths. That was prepared by Pebbles. In that cd, we could choose How many questions to display, in how much time we want to do that, and once we solve a particular question, it also shows that how much time you have taken to solve the question. Obviously, solution to the given problem if answer is not right. So for example, I could choose 20 questions to do in 10 minutes, I could do first question in 40 seconds and second in 21 seconds and so on. Sounds really fantastic no? But here comes the problem of accessibility! The audio of the questions was provided But: 1. We are unable to select anything. Say how many questions, how much time etc... 2. Jaws was not reading anything since the content was designed in flash and accessibility was a major problem with this product as accessibility guidelines were not followed while creating it. One more product of the same company I remember, it was for English learning but again that was totally inaccessible. This particular company and few more like times group, india today group etc produce excellent products in CDs, but none of them is accessible. I also contacted the pebbles people, but failed to get any reply from their side. Another example of rapidex computer course can be given, they give one cd with their book, in which they provide video mode and audio with video mode, but again the cd is not accessible with screen readers. Sir have you ever tried any cd based product of Universal Publications? I am asking because I will order their cyber law cd but don't know about accessibility. What I have observed is that these company use Flash or Java but they forget accessibility. We read many books for such exams. Why can't an interactive CD be made for those books, maybe, one CD for one book, or it may combine a few books for particular domains. Such an interactive CD allowing persons to solve objective questions by choosing alternatives and giving feedback, has been made by MKCL for MS-CIT exam. I think it can be prepared by publishers for all sorts of competitive exams. Even blind aspirants would also get a lot from it as it would simulate the actual test taking experience and would dispense with the need to record the material or have it read by somebody or have it scanned. If anybody is aware of any such product, please let me know. or else, the idea may be mooted with some publishers. Hi all, In some ways, silence is the worst thing for a blind person especially during navigation. As for watching the snow, there are several ways to do it besides feeling. For example, the person could use sonar or if there is sufficient light vision substitution technology as for inner silence, I suspect that my brain is as chatty as anyone else's. [AI] Talking ATM
Last year there was so muchdiscussion on nonaccessability of banking services and the pain it was causing us. . Therefore we had to go for a general circular from the RBI and the operational guidelines from IBA. we have now gone into the finer points of the various services and facilities provided by Banks. We can of course take one issue at a time. we have had to work with the authorities to get a circular that 1/3rd of the ATMs would be talking. Also SBI has committed to have many machines of the new lot which will talk. After this we have been holding discussions with the ATM manufacturers on what features we want and what we mean by talking ATMs. this is no small achievement and has taken several hours and I can realistically say several days, weeks and months. Now 2 ATMs are standing at St Xaviers College for each and every one of you to try, check out, comment and be a part of a historical process before they are used in the country. I am told by the St. Xaviers team that they have posted the invitation on this list but I have been travelling and have had no time to check my old mails. Therefore I am going to ask each and every one of you from Mumbai and around and those who are going to be in the city in the next few days to go to St Xaviers College-XRCVC and do your bit for yourself and for others in the country who you represent. it is your suggestions that will make the difference between accessible, non accessible and semi accessible. Re: [AI] How to use find feature in internet explorer?
Hello access Indians, specially amar, and of course everyone else. The find feature of any application is a great utility to stumble on the desire location at the swift. In fact, if you know what you need, and if you are shrewd enough to use the find feature, it’s a great time and efforts saver as well. As the example given by amar, that from a huge page, he wanted to search a word call cherche gate. Never the less, coming on the point, we already discussed that there’re two finds for jfw users. 1. the find feature of jaws for windows, which is a handy way to find anything on the web, and can be access by ctrl+f while on the internet page. 2. the find feature of any application, (internet explorer in our case), that is a great way to find anything on the page, the difference is, that it’s available for anyone, disregards of jfw users only. This can also be accessed by ctrl+f. now, what’s the catch, is that if you are running jfw, can you use the internet explorer’s find feature, while the key to access is ctrl+f in both cases? Actually yes, and let me tell, that there are two ways for this as well. 1. go to the edit menu inIE, and press enter on find. This will bring up the find dialog box, which can now be accessed. 2. but, if you wanna make it more easy, as with the shortcut key it self, then do the following. •press jaws key plus three (on the typing pad, not the num pad one), •now press the ctrl+f to bring up the find dialog box of IE, instead of virtual find of jfw. What’s happening: Basically, we’re pressing an additional key jaws key plus three, which is a feature of jfw it self. It allows the next key to be press to send directly through the active application. So not just here, but anywhere else, if you having the key conflict between jfw and your application, I’d suggest you using this key combination. Hope it helped some of you. if you haven't visited my blog, you haven't visited the life! for whole new refreshing experience, rush hurry on http://www.myfriendprateek.blogspot.com regards, prateek agarwal. skype: prateek_agarwal32 website: http://www.prateekagarwal.webs.com best solution for all your softwares/websites development needs. you tell, i'll build. -- Original message -- From: Amar Jain amarjain2...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2009 18:43:27 +0530 Subject: Re: [AI] How to use find feature in internet explorer?
