Re: [AI] folder lock

2009-10-11 Thread Vamshi. G
Hi

If you want to have a password to a folder, then zip it and then you
can have a password to it.

In case of a file, if the file is a MS word, excel, power point file,
then you can have a password to it.

But even I'm looking for a software by which you can create a password
to a folder without zipping it. I remember Prateek once wrote a mail
about this, but to be very honest, I didn't understand it.

Re: [AI] request for clarification to purchase 1 TB hard drive

2009-10-11 Thread Roopakshi Pathania

Hi,

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend running XP on 1 TB hard drive.
You could
a. Consider installing Windows 7 instead
b. Use this drive to backup data

A primary reason of bringing out newer OS is to improve performance on newer
better hardware. XP is not up to the job of managing the hardware that is
coming these days.
Besides, I am not sure your 1.5 GB ram is adequate for a 1 TB hard drive.
You would have to do some research on this matter.

If you still wish to install XP, you need to know that when you install Windows
from your XP CD, it will only recognize 127 GB space.
I won’t go into the explanation here, but in this scenario, according to my
knowledge, you have 2 options.
1. Install XP, update to SP3, and repartition the drive using an
application for this purpose.
2. Slipstream SP3 into your XP CD and then install Windows.

Re: [AI] Problem in accessing login pages through Firefox.

2009-10-11 Thread Roopakshi Pathania
Hi,

It appears to me that you or some one else has installed a Firefox add-on
called LastPass Password Manager.
To disable or uninstall it:

1. Go to Tools > Add-ons (ALT+T, A)
2. Arrow down through the list of add-ons, or press the letter L to reach
all add-ons starting with this letter.
3. Tab till you find the Disable button or the Uninstall button.

You could also learn more about this add-on and use it. Most Firefox add-ons
are accessible.

Re: [AI] TOEFL

2009-10-11 Thread Roopakshi Pathania

Hi,

To add to what has already been posted, a candidate with a disability has to
register for the test offline.
The forms can be printed out from the site, or received through post on
emailing ETS support staff.

The accommodation requested by a test taker has to be justified in a document
by the relevant expert, e.g. an ophthalmologist.

Finally, unnecessary accommodation like taking a large amount of extra time is
noted and the score can be downgraded by the college(s). This use to be
practiced a few years ago and perhaps the procedure may have changed since then.

In any event, your caller should carefully read the “Test Takers with
Disabilities” section.

all of us are discussing about the first ever voice recording in India.
what about US because the speech was delivered in Chicago.

Hello,

I made a little more enquiry about it. Gauhar Jaan was the first to record
a song in Kolkata 1902. It does not clarify my doubt though. Swami
Vivekananda died in June, 1902. Is it plausible that somebody arranged
recording of Swami Vivekananda's speech in Chicago in 1893 or later
someone recorded his speech in Kkolkata before his death in 1902?

One of our friends on this list, Mr. Arup Chakraborty, informed me over
phone that, according to Shankari Prasad Basu, a noted biographer of
Swamiji, wrote that his voice was recorded by a maharaja (probably of
Mysore) in his private studio in wax record. But that record is not
available any longer. I also don't understand, if Swamiji's speeches were
recorded, why did not anyone publish it within 100 years of his death?

Please write to the Listener's Club for information. I hope, the voice is
genuine. I only want to make sure.

Best regards,
Amiyo Biswas.

Actually first recording in India was done by Shashi Mukhi in Kolkata in
1903.

Hello,

I once saw the cd. Is it possible that Swamiji Vivekananda's speech was

was done in 1906. Swamiji died in 1902. If we take for granted, the
recording was done abroad, he returned from his tour of America and
Europe in 1897. Perhaps our friends studying or teaching history may
enlighten us better.

I shall download it, of course. Thank you for the upload.

[AI] Affidavit must for gift in kind, over Rs. 50,000, from kin!

National
Affidavit must for gift in kind, over Rs. 50,000, from kin
It must affirm that donor is related to donee
New Delhi: From now on, when you get a gift in kind, valued at more than Rs.
50,000, from your parents or other relatives, make sure you have a sworn
affidavit declaring the donor your kin.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has ruled that any such gift will be taxable
for the donee unless it is from relatives or given during occasions such as
marriage or by way of inheritance.
On-the-spot verification
"The donee has to get an affidavit affirming the donor to be his mother,
father, brother, sister or any other relative so that at the time of claiming
exemption under the new arrangement, the income tax assessment officer can have
an on-the-spot verification," a senior IT official said.

An individual could preferably get one affidavit listing all gifts taken in the
entire assessment year from different relatives or the same kin. The affidavit
would save IT assessees the hassle of proving that the gifts, movable and
immovable, were received or inherited from a relative residing in any part of
the world. It would also establish the donee's relationship with the donor, the
official said.
The CBDT on September 30 notified that "with effect from October 1 any gift
in kind, being an immovable property or any other property, the value of which
exceeds Rs. 50,000, will become taxable in the hands of the donee, being an
individual or a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), as income from other sources..."
The department will not tax gifts received from a relative on the occasion of
marriage of the donee, under a will or by way of inheritance, in contemplation
of the death of the donor, from any local authority as defined in Section
10(20) of the Act, from any fund or trust established under Section 10(23C) and
from any trust or institution registered under Section 12AA.
Assesses will have to file income tax dues on the value of the gift and
disclose its taxable value in the returns for the assessment year 2010-11.
Under the IT Act 1961, a relative is defined as a spouse, brother or sister,
brother or sister of the spouse, brother or sister of either of the parents,
any lineal ascendant or descendant and spouse of any of the relatives.

I think instead of fighting over words, this is one issue that requires
social activism. It is the high time that we demand the government of
India
to pass suitable law to make books/other printed materials available to
the
visually challenged persons in accessible format. Unless our energy gets

mobilized in this direction, this threat is going to lead us nowhere.
Perhaps a few others will comment, someone will throw personalized
statements, the moderator finally will intervene and put a full stop and
the
issue will vanish from the radar. I am sure that those who care about
accessibility are not looking for such an useless end to this meaningful

debate. Just my thoughts.

Re: [AI] Swami vivekanand's speech.

2009-10-11 Thread Subramani L
Hey:

The speech was made in the US and so it could have been recorded there.
Some of the recordings available dates as far back as 1890 and, given
the significance of the event, it could have been recorded then. It is a
guess only.

Hello,

I made a little more enquiry about it. Gauhar Jaan was the first to
record a
song in Kolkata 1902. It does not clarify my doubt though. Swami
Vivekananda
died in June, 1902. Is it plausible that somebody arranged recording of
Swami Vivekananda's speech in Chicago in 1893 or later someone recorded
his
speech in Kkolkata before his death in 1902?

One of our friends on this list, Mr. Arup Chakraborty, informed me over
phone that, according to Shankari Prasad Basu, a noted biographer of
Swamiji, wrote that his voice was recorded by a maharaja (probably of
Mysore) in his private studio in wax record. But that record is not
available any longer. I also don't understand, if Swamiji's speeches
were
recorded, why did not anyone publish it within 100 years of his death?

Please write to the Listener's Club for information. I hope, the voice
is
genuine. I only want to make sure.

Best regards,
Amiyo Biswas.

Hello,

I heard it, too. I am not sure, taking into account the early noise, I can't
be sure. Anyway, I made some online search and found that recording started
in America in 1877. In 1893 it reached a commercial stage. Songs of 3 minute
duration were recorded in cylinder records. This recording is of 35 minutes.

Another interesting information is that I found a direct and free link to
this recording. You may acttivate this link:

Our friend is using Jaws 9 on windows xp. When he is entering an address in

suggested by the auto-complete feature.

I checked that it may happen only if the screen echo is set to none using

Re: [AI] Good news for Punjabi language users.

2009-10-11 Thread Saurabh Malav
Since Bhojpuri language is based on devanagari script, hence any TTS which
support devanagari script can works with bhojpuri language. Currently
eSpeak, Lekha and Vaachak TTS support devanagari script.

Currently eSpeak support devanagari script based languages (like hindi,
marathi, sanskrit etc.), Tamil, English and Pubjabi languages. There is no
TTS available for other indian languages. I encourage members from other
regional languages to come forward and work to add support for more indian
languages with eSpeak. Any member who has good understanding of regional
language can work with eSpeak team to add support for desired language.

Thanks,

[AI] E speak with other languages?

2009-10-11 Thread moiz tundawala
I have some idea about urdu, Arabic and my mother tongue lisan ud
da’wat which has a script similar to Arabic, and has its roots in
Arabic, gujarati and other Indian languages. How do I get to the e
speak team? Would be glad to be of any help. I face real difficulties
due to a lack of access to religious and other community information
in these languages.
Best,

Hello,

I heard it, too. I am not sure, taking into account the early noise, I
can't
be sure. Anyway, I made some online search and found that recording
started
in America in 1877. In 1893 it reached a commercial stage. Songs of 3
minute
duration were recorded in cylinder records. This recording is of 35
minutes.

Another interesting information is that I found a direct and free link
to
this recording. You may acttivate this link:

Most Firefox
add-ons are accessible.

hope all are nice!

i have a little querey regarding scanned table from book.
while scanning tables from a book, few times the tables are scanned
and shown as sections with column breaks depending upon the how many
columns in the table instead of its proper format.
and it is creating problem in understanding.
so is there any way for that kind of tables to convert into its original format.

any suggestion would be appreciated!

Re: [AI] querey regarding table

2009-10-11 Thread mukesh jain
hello, if this problem is persisting while scanning with fine reader
then you may simply copy the document after converting in to word
document and then paste it in to new word pad document and then again
copy the contents pasted in to word pad and paste in to new microsoft
word document.

even i do face this kind of problem while scanning with tables so i
follow the above mentioned procedure and i get the same format of
table as originally appear on the page.

i am using microsoft office 2003 and windows xp with fine reader 9.
again i do not know this is the proper way or not but this is how i
get my problem solved. again the intelectual person on the list may
guide more on it.

mukesh jain.

I suggest that you use the calendar to set the alarm rather than phone's clock.
It has some functions that are absent in alarm clock. When alarm goes-up, press
key 2 instead of key 1 and the alarm will ring again after 5 m.

Re: [AI] distributing books

2009-10-11 Thread Dipendra Manocha
Hello Friends

Most likely, no publisher is going to challenge providing books to blind.
How ever, to scale things up and create huge libraries of thousands of copy
righted books and share them among every one all over the world, we need
provisions in copy right law and need legal back-up.

There will always be a fear among most of us till we get legal rights.

More over, if we want that books are provided to us the same day as and when
they are released, we need cooperation of publishers. This will happen only
when we take the path of right to read campaign to let publishers and the
society know that we exist and right to read is what we claim.

Being law breaker is easy. Changing law is very tough. How ever, in the long
run and to be able to get books lawfully in right time in right format we
will have to take this tough path.

Currently, World Intellectual Property Rights Organisation is deliberating
on a treety proposed by the World Blind Union. All stake holders are
participating in this negociation. Most knowledgable world leaders of the
blindness community and technology experts are fighting this battle. At
this time getting together and fighting together to get our right legally
can help solve this problem for ever for our country.

Publishers are not our animies. They have a right to earn a living out of
what they own. They are mostly cooperative for us. How ever, we need to
create systems and right technological and legal solutions for them to be
able to help us in a systematic way which helps them protect their rights
and at the same time gives us the right to read in accessible format.

The need of the hour is social activism, awareness building that focuses on
the need for making available books in accessible formats, negotiation and
call for legislation.

Right to read is ours, but then the authors and publishers too have their
rights. It is middle ground that we need to find for a meaningful way
forward. This discussion has given me a fair bit of content as possible
content for my presentation at the forthcoming Regional Conference being

I think instead of fighting over words, this is one issue that requires
social activism. It is the high time that we demand the government of India
to pass suitable law to make books/other printed materials available to the
visually challenged persons in accessible format. Unless our energy gets
mobilized in this direction, this threat is going to lead us nowhere.
Perhaps a few others will comment, someone will throw personalized
statements, the moderator finally will intervene and put a full stop and the
issue will vanish from the radar. I am sure that those who care about
accessibility are not looking for such an useless end to this meaningful
debate. Just my thoughts.

I think although Dinesh tried to answer some of the issues I put forward, I
haven't got anything to justify publishers or libraries including those of
centrel universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University, not providing EBooks
to disabled, even though the books are available to non-disabled students.
and although there are sites like
questia.com
even those are expensive, and books are not available in portable formats,
and you need net connection to read them, as only online reading is
possible. if you need academic Ebooks, from publishers like sage or
routledge, their sites charge you very high indeed.
and if you are buying books, you have to put in additional unpaied labour of
scanning them.
so being at the wrong end of all these discrimination, I don't see any moral
obligation to submit to discriminating laws. what Gandhi asked was not to
submit to immoral laws, not using means that are based on arms. in scanning
and distributing scanned book, there is no use of arms.

As Individuals we may convert making use of fare use clause. How ever,
collectively, we need to move in right way. I have not seen bad resonse
from copyright owners when approahed with adequate infrastructure and
systems in place. DFI and Bookshare have many signed contracts to show this.

More and more publishers suport and want to work towards this. Thus
situation is not that sellors are not willing to convert dog food to human
food in any cost.

Suppose I am in a country of dogs where only dog food is supplied.
I am obliged to purchase it and then convert it into human food by any
hypothetical means and eat it.
I demand that I would purchase the said dog food, if it is processed and
converted into human food otherwise not.
But sellers insist that they would not do it at any cost.
I think I am fully justified to distribute such converted food anyhow
obtained to fellow human beings in order to satisfy the human hunger and
also to make them-sellers-realize that there is demand for human food and
they would do well to process it and earn their due share by selling human
food in addition to dog food..
How am I infringing upon the rights of sellers?
Further, I am satisfying hunger of few humans who would otherwise have never
satisfied hunger as they could not purchase or digest dog food, but were
hungry nonetheless.

Just a simple question, how would you like to ensure the right of the
publisher / writer? Or would you simply say no to their right of earning
from their hard work? Though I completely understand the right to read and
support it completely but the worry is the question "Am I stepping on the
right of others?" "is this the right way to secure my rights?
I believe, If we ensure the rights of the publishers and authors, their
coperation would certainly be with us or at the most we will be striving
towards a balanced liberal society.
All, please take a note of that argument / disagreement to the ideas / views
does not mean disrespect in any manner and if I am hurting anyone , my
sincere apologies in advance.
Thanks

I have some idea about urdu, Arabic and my mother tongue lisan ud da'wat
which has a script similar to Arabic, and has its roots in Arabic, gujarati
and other Indian languages. How do I get to the e speak team? Would be glad
to be of any help. I face real difficulties due to a lack of access to
religious and other community information in these languages.
Best,
Moiz.

Re: [AI] distributing books

2009-10-11 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Yes, Subramani, You may quote my name while citing my views anywhere.
However, I would like to add about the ongoing debate that laws have, for their
end, promotion of justice.
Thus, justice is paramount and not necessarily the statutes written in black
and white on paper.

It is the quest for justice which is reflected, in my opinion, in assertions
that we may follow our interior laws.
It is the quest for justice which prompts to change laws.
So, slavish obedience to written laws merely bespeaks of a mechanical mindset,
which consists in following letter of the law like a computer follows a
programme and even achieves spectacular results.
However, a sensitive and sensible soul would often yearn after justice.
So, It is not clearly just when a visually challenged person does not get
accessible reading material.
To remedy this injustice, we may, individually convert the material into
accessible formats and provide it to those who require it.
Publishers come into picture only when we collectively do so, or publicly
announce availability of such accessible material.
Now, justice demands that they should also get monitory reward for what they
own, as it has been put here.
However, they should be able to sell what is required by the customer and not
dog food to humans.
Now, even though Dipendra has asserted with a few examples that they are ready
to convert dog food to human food given the essential safeguards that it would
not be supplied to others to publishers' monitory loss.
However, we want each and every publisher to be so willing, if not voluntarily
compelled by law to do so, as it is the course reducing injustice to minimum
regarding right to read of VI is concerned.
When we are setting up a few public platforms for making availability known, or
even actually making the book available, we are only symbolically breaking the
laws, for there books so available would not constitute more than ten percent
of published copyright material available at a given time.
So, apart from this symbolic disobedience, if negotiations and treaties can
make way for all to read at an affordable cost and without extra effort, I
would welcome that day.
Till then, let us keep up negotiations and symbolic acts of book satya graha.
I hope, in this blind community is not indulging in naxalite violence!

In the below example, you care about the seller's right to get money of the
products he supplies, "you are converting the product you "purchased" and
thus the seller is getting what he is entitled to.
However in case if you rob him and then convert the food for your use, then?
I know, you too will agree it's being immoral and illegal too.
The distribution of food is fully justified because you own the raw material
and the effort you put in to convert but what if some one robs you for his
hunger? How would you feel?
I do understand you are doing it for a cause and it is important to note and
understand that transformation of social order can not be and never been
silent or without a pain or even not confirming to all laws and morals.
And on top of that the right to read is not of equal degree to the right to
food.
Kill the sin and not the sinner, the sin here in our case is the lack of
awareness among the publishers, lack of infrastructure for providing
accessible books, lack of inclusiveness in copyright act.

Further, granting that electronic versions have far more potential for illegal
distribution to financial detriment of publisher, hard copies cannot be said to
be invulnerable to such distribution.

There are shops replete with such pirated hard copies for sighted to save money.
Has there been a legal battle involving such pirates?
