Re: [AI] making U K English as default
Hi srijith, just follow these steps to do so: go to start\programs\microsoft office 2003\microsoft offfice language settings there you will be shown the available/installed languages. here you have to choose an option "Choose the language that defines default behavior in Microsoft Office applications" and set your desired language and say OK that's it. No. The first slide is always labeled as title slide and it will not be possible to rename it. The first slide is actually intented to show the title of your presentation and henceforth there are only two fields, the title field and the sub-title field. Vetri. [AI] FW: [Blindmath] Version 0.0.10 of SVGDraw01 is now available for download
-Original Message- From: blindmath-boun...@nfbnet.org [mailto:blindmath-boun...@nfbnet.org] On Behalf Of Richard Baldwin Sent: Saturday, September 24, 2011 11:13 AM To: BlindMath Mailing List; accessibleim...@freelists.org Subject: [Blindmath] Version 0.0.10 of SVGDraw01 is now available for download Version 0.0.10 of my drawing program for blind students is now posted at: http://www.austincc.edu/baldwin/SWT-SVG/SVGDraw01.zip and is available for immediate download. This version differs from the previous version in two major respects: 1. Addition of clipping capability The Mod menu now contains a "Clip" action. This action allows you to use one shape to determine what portion of a second shape actually gets drawn. The capability is useful for a variety of purposes, one of the most important of which is to draw circular and elliptical arcs. 2. New packaging Beginning with this version, I am also trying out a new packaging scheme. With this scheme, anyone having access to a computer with a Windows operating system, version XP or later, 32-bit or 64-bit hardware, can run the SVGDraw01 program from any folder on the disk and even run the program from a USB flash drive. Perform the following two steps to run the program 1. Extract all of the material from the zip file into an empty folder being careful to preserve the directory tree structure. 2. Execute the file named RunSVGDraw01.bat. Unlike previous versions of the program, it is not necessary for you to have Java installed on your computer to run the program. When the program starts, you will land on Home Base from which you can select any of the actions provided by the menus. Instructions for opening the Instructions document are printed on Home Base. Alternatively, you can simply open the file named Instructions.htm in your browser and read the instructions without running the program. This is my first time using this packaging scheme. If you encounter any problems, please let me know. bald...@dickbaldwin.com -- Richard G. Ok nice to hear that there are 5 seats reserved for us! I want to say Mr Rahul that I also was appeared in last exam(DJS) held on 14th of Febrary 2009, I also faced the same problem, I got the scribe who was hindi primary teacher, I immediatly raised an objection and with in 10 minutes the coordinator replaced my scribe who was very good reader. However I couldn't manage to score 55% in prilims. As you rightly pointed out that we should give in advance the application in this regard to the registrar of the highcourt. Re: [AI] Guidelines for barrier free environment
hello friends, in my opinion, government has to build beautiful footpath for easy walking for all the people. it is the duty of government to create easy walking area along the roads for disabled. we can take this matter in to court for justice collectively. in india, most of the roads are either under repair, or under construction work. we cannot walk on the road, but it is the duty of the government to keep the footpath in good condition always. then only we can think about safe and independent mobility with the help of white cane. with best regards m.chandru - Original Message - From: "Eyeway Helpdesk" To: "Access India" Sent: Thursday, September 22, 2011 5:09 PM Subject: [AI] Guidelines for barrier free environment Hi all, Greetings from Eyeway Helpdesk! I think that this matters more than all other screen readers, assistive devices and all such other things. Even I fail to comprehend how totally blind people are able to move on their own. I have always taken the help of sighted guides for moving around. Many people also feel that those who require sighted assistance are more dependent on others than those who use white canes are. I personally feel that it's better to take the help of a sighted guide instead of fumbling around just to prove that you are not dependent on others. Of course, there are people who are truly independent and do not require much sighted assistance, but, like I said earlier, I really don't know how they actually manage it. I feel that people, in general, have a very negative attitude towards those who use white canes. I'm not saying that they hate blind people, but there is a drastic change in their behavior. They start interfering unnecessarily in order to assist you, or they start asking ridiculous questions. All this also happens if you move around with a sighted guide, but I believe that it happens more if you use a white cane. Of course, this method also has its flaws, but what other option do we have? [AI] Fwd: Facinating:- 32-hour-old is youngest eye donor
Hi all, hope all are doing fine pasting below article which get from another listt. Regards Wahid -- Forwarded message -- Facinating:- 32-hour-old is youngest eye donor Mumbai: When their newborn daughter met an untimely death a mere 32 hours after birth, bereaved Kandivli couple Hetal and Dhimant Shah took a pledge -- they would take all their sorrow and turn it into the most precious gift: the gift of vision. They decided that their beloved infant would live on in the eyes of others, who would think of her every time they enjoyed the wondrous beauties of the world. With no hesitation in their minds, the couple decided to donate their infant's eyes, making her the youngest ever eye donor in the city, and perhaps in the world. The infant's death came as a big blow to the Shah family, who had been waiting with bated breath for her birth. The family's euphoria, however, was cruelly nipped in the bud, when she was diagnosed with a heart ailment within hours of her birth. "She had to be put on ventilator support immediately, as her condition was critical," said Dr Dilip Raichura of the Raichura maternity hospital in Kandivli. When the family learnt that their newborn might be snatched from them soon, they decided to preserve and perpetuate at least one part of their bundle of joy. "My father has always encouraged and supported eye donation. When my uncle Ramesh passed away, we had also donated his eyes. So we decided that my daughter's eyes too would be donated. She would live on, not only in our memory, but in the eyes of others," said the donor's father Dhimant, who works as a chartered accountant with a private firm. The donor's mother Hetal Shah (24) said, "My daughter has brought back the gleam of recognition in the eyes of no less than six people. Perhaps she was sent to this world to serve this very purpose. God sent her here to perform thus selfless act. She has lived for only 32 hours, but in the short life span, she has made me proud." According to Raichura, who runs the Netradan Jagruti Centre in Kandivli, the deceased newborn is perhaps the youngest eye donor in the country. "The parents have done something truly admirable. Other parents should take inspiration from them and start pledging their eyes, and instructing their kids to do the same. A single cornea can give the blessing of eyesight to three individuals. Thus the infant's eyes will illuminate the lives of six recipients," he said. In the past few years, Raichura has encouraged over 400 people to donate their eyes. "In the city of Navsari in Gujarat, people have made the greatest number of eye donations in the nation," said Raichura. Dhimant's father Vijay, who is actively involved in the eye donation awareness drive spearheaded by Raichura, said, "Superstitions and religious beliefs hold back people from donating eyes. But we firmly believe that by granting vision to others, she is doing work for the welfare of others, even in death." Expert speak Renowned ophthalmologist Dr T P Lahane, head of the ophthalmology department at JJ hospital, said, "She is the youngest donor; before this, I had heard of a nine-month-old child's eyes being donated. It is a beautiful, selfless gesture on the part of the family members. Such acts should be encouraged." First couple donates eyes On September 8 this year, on the occasion of National Eye Donation Day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur took a pledge to donate their eyes. The couple said in a joint statement: "We are aware that there are innumerable cornea-blind patients in our country, for whom the gift of sight will be a priceless one. We hope that people across the country will rise to the occasion and support the National Program for Control of Blindness and help their fellow brethren." They also lauded the National Eye Bank and corneal transplantation teams across the country for their efforts to bring back the gleam of vision in the eyes of those in need. 284 million The total number of visually impaired people in the world, according to the World Health Organisation. 4.6 million The number of sightless people in India 1/4th The world's total visually impaired population is Indian 39 million The number of blind people in the world 245 million The number of people afflicted with low vision 1919 The BSNL/MTNL toll-free nation-wide number you can call to be connected to the nearest eye bank. -- Register for AccessIndia convention 2011(November 12-13) at: http://www.accessindia.org.in/harish/convention.htm Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] The visually impaired visionary who lives life to the fullest
The visually impaired visionary who lives life to the fullest Source - http://www.dnaindia.com/india/interview_the-visually-impaired-visionary-who-lives-life-to-the-fullest_1589221 Published: Monday, September 19, 2011, 21:08 IST By Daniel Pinto | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA Heinrich Wagner is a visually impaired man, one who has brazenly performed numerous feats that would reduce most 'normal' human beings to quivering, cowering messes. Apart from participating in several endurance-testing marathons, the Capetonian has broken two land speed records, sky-dived from a height of 10,000 feet and bungee-jumped from one of the highest bridges in the world. Apart from cycling solo for 39km, Wagner has completed the 2011 ABSA Cape Epic (regarded as the Tour de France of mountain biking). Wagner took part in the Hong Kong Iron Man in 2006, completing 180km on a tandem bicycle in extreme weather conditions. He also tried his hand, successfully, at mountaineering and rafting. Oh, and he played in the 1998 blind cricket World Cup, which his side won. DNA's Daniel Pinto spoke to this indefatigable and unvanquished individual who is also a sought-after motivational speaker and was in Mumbai last week to address a gathering of top business executives. Excerpts: It’s natural for people to dwell on things they can’t change and attribute their failures to it. What made you different? I was born blind. For 25 years I was cross with god, the universe. Eighteen years ago I set sail on a 28-day journey from Cape Town to Rio [de Janeiro] with two blind mates and a hearing-impaired skipper. It was there that I experienced this big, beautiful world and realised that I was so small in the universe. It was then that I decided to live a full life and stop feeling sorry for myself and blaming the world for the fact that I couldn’t see. What made you go in for adrenaline-pumping, physically challenging sports? It started out with me wanting to show the world, but then it came full circle after it became an option to market the abilities of differently abled people. I founded an organisation, VisionTree, in 2004 and all the adventurous activities I tackle are to fund it. After I completed a race on a tandem, the organisation was able to put six blind girls through six months of computer training. And the adrenaline rush, of course, is probably the closest I get to the sensation of sight. How do you deal with the concerns of family and friends about your physical well being? I respect them very much. I care for them, which is why when I’m about to face danger, I surround myself with professionals and people in the know, like terrain experts. When I broke the land speed record for the second time (after Wagner became the first South African to break a world land speed record in 2005, he went on to break the world blind land speed record by averaging a speed of 322.5kph in 2009), I consulted a professional racer in the UK and drove a Mercedes SL65 AMG which is a safe car. Adventure sports will always be risky. The element of risk adds to the adventure. My family has always been very supportive. When I broke the land speed record, it was two weeks before my wedding, and my wife was there at the event. So you can imagine! When it comes to making judgments and decisions, a lot depends on visual input. What system have you developed to aid you in your endeavours? Most of it comes from feeling. I’m good at picking things up through my senses. I’ve used my gut feeling. And, of course, I make mistakes, but that’s why I travel. If you travel across different countries and experience different cultures, it expands your point of view and your frames of reference. How was your last visit to India? The last time I was in your country it was for the 1998 blind cricket World Cup in Delhi. I was playing for South Africa and there was huge support from the local crowd because we were up against Pakistan in the final. Are you a spiritual person? Yes, very much so. I think I am guided by my spirit. I believe in my instinct. I try to be in balance with my spiritual side. I spend time thinking about where I am at and I consider my opportunities. Tell us about your autobiographical show ‘Bat Magic’ that you perform at art festivals. The main driving force behind the show, which started in 2003, was to show the lighter side of living in darkness. The show managed to put across humour. It was very well received and when corporate presentations came along I was able to reuse material. Incidentally, the festival we launched the in 2003 was the place where I met my wife Melindi. As a man who has risen above circumstance, how would you define success? To use a quote, success is a progressive realisation of a worthwhile dream. Success is a vastly individual thing. But what's important is you have to live the ideal and it will become a reality. You have accomplished several things that are, in an understatement, astounding. What achievement are you prou

Dear Members, I will say two things require. 1 White cane.2 Confidence. We should know the right tacnic to use the cane. It will make you walk comfortably. But new surroundings surely you should have confidence and you should not feel shy to ask public help. It needs lot of patience.- Original Message - From: "Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan" To: Sent: Saturday, September 24, 2011 11:55 AM Subject: Re: [AI] Tips to manage without escort? But if you are looking for tips without white cane, then I am afraid that you are out of luck. Especially for someone with little or no vision, nothing can supstitute mobility aids like cane. If you are looking for tips with white cane, then that's a reasonable expectation and fokes here can provide tips to minimise the reliability on escorts. I would also like to bring another misconception to the forefront. Some fokes even among visually challenged consider someone walking around without cane being smart. Of course while you go with white can people will ask ridicules questions, but I think it would happened more or less if you would go with sighted escort. And one can reduce risk factor by developing good mobility. I have seen many visually impaired people who manage very well without sighted escort. Above all, self satisfaction is really important. You are welcome. We are all here to exchange ideas and learn from each other. It is different than the mushroom or marshmallow tips that some people have because the ball is larger in diameter and hollow. The advantages of this tip are that it doesn't get stuck as much as a straight tip and because it is hollow it gives the acoustic information that is missing in both the straight tips and some of the larger solid tips. This tip has worked very well for me for over 20 years I am sure it could be fabricated in India for much less money than I pay for mine that I get from Canada. More cane tips or rather, tips for using canes: It is essential that the movement of your cane covers the entire width of your body. You must ensure that your cane has touched the ground in all the places where you intend to put your feet thus avoiding holes or compensating for uneven ground. If you are right-handed for example, you would hold your cane in your right hand but your hand would be in the center of your body, not to the side. In this way you will be sure to touch everything. When you encounter an obsticle, you would move your cane first to explore where you want to put your feet before actually stepping there. Whether or not your cane should remain on the ground or hit the ground with more of a tapping action is debatable. I leave mine on the ground because I get more information that way and minimize the chance of missing something important. Feeling subtle changes in the ground or floor with my cane first gives me information about where I am. The length of a cane is also important. Most canes in India are to short for maximum effectiveness and present a safety problem. So the cane can be used at its full length so you have time to stop or change course if necessary. This avoids the problem of coming up on a flight of steps for example and not having enough time to react in time to line up properly on the steps. Although having a longer cane is necessary, it is also necessary to shorten the length by moving your hand down below the handle to accomodate our traffic situation and overcrowding found in India and many developing countries. This is just situational management and practice to know how far in front of you the tip of your cane should be in different situations. There are a million strategies like this that people use every day to keep themselves independent and safe. We could have entire discussions and debates on how to ask questions, using compass directions, listening for information, dealing with the public, keeping bags and belongings from getting stolen, traveling on trains and buses, handling money, etc. Jean Register for AccessIndia convention 2011(November 12-13) at: http://www.accessindia.org.in/harish/convention.htm Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Tips to manage without escort?
well you can not go on, what people may say or ask questions, one should ignore them. if you go alone with your cane they may say, why dont you get some one to go with you, and if you go with escort, that we are so poor, that we can't go alone, let alone do anything els in life. At 07:04 AM 9/24/2011, you wrote: Friends, First of all, I respect each views, and expect the same from all. Somebody rightly said that this topic is more important then screen readers. What is social dignity? If I am given 2 choices of so called social dignity, and my independence, I would like to choose the second one. Though I am not good enough as far as mobility is concern yet for me personal satisfaction matters most. Of course while you go with white can people will ask ridicules questions, but I think it would happened more or less if you would go with sighted escort. And one can reduce risk factor by developing good mobility. I have seen many visually impaired people who manage very well without sighted escort. Above all, self satisfaction is really important. Though its tough to manage without escort but with confidence it is possible. I dont want to say that we should not use escort, its necessary sometime to have sighted person with you. But we should honestly try to reduce sighted assistance as much as possible. let me thanks rajesh sir for this topic on the list. [AI] tips
Tips on the end of canes that is. For many years I have used a tip called a "rolling ball." It is different than the mushroom or marshmallow tips that some people have because the ball is larger in diameter and hollow. The end of the cane is kept on the ground and the ball rolls back and forth in front of you as you walk.
