Re: [AI] Tips to manage without escort?

2011-09-27 Thread Himanshu Sahu
Another aspect of this whole discussion regarding independent mobility
or of taking help of escort lead us to the question of time
management.
I come to my ofice on bike with my brother wihch takes around fourty minutes.
sometimes I have also come fully independently by bus and walking to
the office from the bus stand. the whole exercise consumes around 90
minutes out of which 60-70 minutes in bus and rest for heading to
office managing full packed crowd on pavements.
One suggestion may be forwarded to come earlier but what to do if we
have scarcity of time?

Re: [AI] tips to manage without escort?

2011-09-27 Thread Himanshu Sahu
Generally, I always keep folding cane with me. I use the service of
escort for boarding me into bus and manage on my own inside and the
time of getting down. Generally, someone would be standing from my
family on prior information which I give them by cellphone and if not,
do not face much difficulty to locate Rickshaw from stand. But it
entirely depends on the distance of Rickshaw stand from bus stand
since big busses do not stop at the nearest stand of my house.
In a nutshell, on daily basis, I use escort, both permanent and
temporary, and folding cane also as per my convenient. Keeping cane
with us becomes essential when go out.

Re: [AI] Tips to manage without escort?

2011-09-27 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Dear Vamshi
Would you please elaborate on your statement written in the context of escort:

"But the important thing is to ask for a taller ladder to paint the remaining
wall, and not to ask someone to paint the wall because of the limitation.
That's the spirit"

Do you intend to communicate that a blind person should go out independently
taking sighted assistance here and there, but not insist on a fixed escort?
I know it can be done and I have done it, but, my point is it is a highly
personal choice whether one wants a fixed escort or occasional help.
Same person may go for both the options at different times, depending on a host
of factors like situation, place, and one's own disposition at the time and so
on.
Nobody has a right to look down upon a totally blind person opting for a fixed
escort.
By totally blind, I mean a person who is not able to do a thing visually.
In your Pune trip, as far as I know, you had some persons who could see quite
well, and as you yourself said, you are also able to see a bit.
Still, you people had to take sighted assistance quite a number of times.
Can you be always sure you will get it whenever you require?
So, escort for mobility is surely a reasonable choice, provided it satisfies my
triple test of availability/affordability/privacy propounded earlier.

But the important thing is to ask for a taller ladder to paint the
remaining wall, and not to ask someone to paint the wall because of
the limitation. That's the spirit required. Society doesn't help us
because we are visually impaired. It helps us because we are trying
hard to succeed despite the visual impairment.

Absolutely well said, Shadab.

We cannot insist with or without escort.
I am still of the opinion that if escort is available, affordable without any
privacy concerns, one who is totally blind must opt for her or him.

Well, whether depending on a permanent sighted guide or using cane is
a matter of personal choice. I can sponsor for the preferred object
but I am afraid - roughly calling the other one a sign of cowardice or
foolishness might be improper.

For taking help, I would like to mention an idea which was used in a
book for a totally different context. I am unable to furnish the
verbatim, so some tiny details or sentiments can be different.

A painter was painstakingly employed to paint a wall. As he was short,
in spite of his great efforts he was unable to reach his hand at the
top. He earnestly requested the employer to provide him a ladder with
two more steps. The employer, looking at the gleaming wall and the
labour's earnestness, arranged a ladder for him so that he can apply
his measured brushes on the remaining wall.

I feel that this is the kind of help we must aspire for. For some
people two more steps in a ladder could be taking a permanent guide
while for some it is going alone with cane occasionally taking
assistance from the by passers.

Shadab

Dear All:

In reading the many postings about mobility, sighted guides and canes, it is
apparent that many people on this list have never had any formal training in
use of the white cane. I am thinking of those who have posted who have
become blind in adulthood or are from rural areas where blindness
rehabilitation training has not been available.

Of course there is no substitute for a structured program in rehab and
adjustment to blindness as would be received from a formal rehabilitation
center. But there are documents that clearly articulate how a white cane is
used and give detailed steps for learning, or improving cane technique.

There is one such document on the National Federation of the Blind's web
site called "The Care and Feeding of the White Cane." It is written for
conditions that would be found in developed countries but is very applicable
to our conditions in India. It is on their web site as a series of
documents by topic. I do not think it is downloadable as a whole document.
However, if enough people would find it helpful I am willing to piece it
together in word and make it available as a printable document. I could
also make notations about variations in described techniques that would
apply to our conditions.

Again, this would not substitute for formal mobility training, but for
people who have lost their vision and just need to get on with life perhaps
it would be helpful. Even though I have been a cane traveler for many years
I always get something out of it every time I read it. As a printed
document it would also be available to reluctant family members and friends
who really don't know how blind people manage independent travel.

I would like to know if this document is something people would find of
benefit?

[AI] My conversation with Professor Hema Murty.

2011-09-27 Thread Balaram

Dear all,
You would have noticed a few days back an Email from Sinoj regarding the
TTS launched recently.
You would have also noticed my views regarding the TTS not only in this
platform but also in accessindia.
The TTS project is headed by Professor Hema Murthy who heads the
computer department in IIT chennai.
She has given me all the assurance to improve the quality of the
Malayalam TTS when she spoke to me over the phone yesterday and I plan
to be in constant touch with her.
What we have to do is to give feedback to professor Hema for the further
improvement of the software.
What I have noticed during my two month stint with CDAC and the training
experience which I had is, Most of the trainees don't come up with
creative criticism or feedback.
When interviewed by CDAC officials, most of the trainees expressed
satisfaction about the TTS.
Indeed, we are satisfied and grateful for those who come up with such
initiatives.
But, this shouldn't give false belief to those who are responsible to
the extend that, whatever they do is good and fine.
What I mean is, we have to point out the bugs and shortcomings of the
products they make without any fear.
At the same time, we must make sure that, we don't go overboard with our
negative criticisms.
Huge amount of money is involved in these kinds of projects and We must
make use of the platforms like Keralavision and accessindia and so on to
express ourselves hence becoming a part of these kinds of initiatives.
I know, things can't be changed overnight and we will have to struggle
and strive for our goals relentlessly.

If we are not ready to do this, we will only get what others give us.
Let's hope that, projects like the TTS and the OCR will see light and in
a good way!

Regards,

P. balaraman.

Dear All:

In reading the many postings about mobility, sighted guides and canes, it is
apparent that many people on this list have never had any formal training in
use of the white cane. I am thinking of those who have posted who have become
blind in adulthood or are from rural areas where blindness rehabilitation
training has not been available.

Of course there is no substitute for a structured program in rehab and
adjustment to blindness as would be received from a formal rehabilitation
center. But there are documents that clearly articulate how a white cane is
used and give detailed steps for learning, or improving cane technique.

There is one such document on the National Federation of the Blind's web site called
"The Care and Feeding of the White Cane." It is written for conditions that
would be found in developed countries but is very applicable to our conditions in India.
It is on their web site as a series of documents by topic. I do not think it is
downloadable as a whole document. However, if enough people would find it helpful I am
willing to piece it together in word and make it available as a printable document. I
could also make notations about variations in described techniques that would apply to
our conditions.

Again, this would not substitute for formal mobility training, but for people
who have lost their vision and just need to get on with life perhaps it would
be helpful. Even though I have been a cane traveler for many years I always
get something out of it every time I read it. As a printed document it would
also be available to reluctant family members and friends who really don't know
how blind people manage independent travel.

I would like to know if this document is something people would find of benefit?

Jean

2011-09-27 Thread Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan
I totally agree. In fact expressions like "personal choice" in such an
important issue clearly show that how far we have to go in terms of
our understanding of certain basic requirements of the visually
challenged in this country related to mobility. If such tendencies
prevail among us, then one doesn't have to wonder about the ignorence
of the general population.

I am 75% visually chalanged
I have not used cane yet
but now thinking to use it because of the motivation that I get from
people like you
and it's benifits
when I walk on road if I ask somebody to help me in crossing the road
they think that I am trying to pretend that's why I have decided to
have cane with me
because I wear my spectacles instead of gogles
so what tips do you like to shair with me regarding the first use of cane?

Hello friends
I like to raise one more thing to this topic which I think is missing so
far

from our discussion that mobility is greatly dependent on the conditions
where we live in . I am 100% visually challenged and I have to travel
around
40 km daily from barnala where I live to sangrur where I work and from
bus

stand I have to walk aroung 1km to reach my office . I have no formal
training in mobility and to great extent I don't know how to use cane but
the point I trying to make is delhi or Mumbai are 100 times more bigger
cities than barnala or sangrur and in small cities the condition of roads
is
very ugly thereare many pits in the road and other than this the roads
are
not smooth and the cane stucks sometimes and if u r going in a motion
than u

most probably in front of cane and it is not a desirable situation when I
was in Chandigarh which is a bigger city than barnala or sangrur where
the

traffic is more compared to barnala or sangrur I won't face such kind of
problems as the roads are more smoother and one more thing that I walk
through the main bazazar and the main road even in these places the
situation is not good when I started to go in the office for the first
month
or so I was not able to locate the location of the pits or holes but now
I

am able to find those by my cane as I have come to know about location of
these holes and pits the cane is very useful even if u don't know how to
use
this as it lets the other people know that u have some kind of problem
aand

they start to travel more carefully when they are near u regarding taking
help from people I never shy away from this when ever I think it
necessary
there are all kind of people in this world some of them are ready to help
us

and they r enough for me to walk around where ever I want to go . Having
confidence in your's ability is must and never take risk and never shy
away

from taking help of others when ever u r in need if one does not offer u
help and don't hesitate asking other . to have a sighted escort is a
desirable situation but some of us are not able to afford it and self
independence is also desirable regarding struggling in some places it
happens and you have to accept it and you have to live with it it does
not
matter what any one else is thinking what matters is that I am able to
feed

my family on my own .

This is a great story and is exactly what is meant by independent

It does not mean going everywhere by yourself.

I think that's a great idea and things specific conditions and not
covered by the document can always be discussed later. It's really
unfortunate that formal mobility training in general and usage of cane
in particular has not been known to a considerable percentage of
members on the list. Perhaps it's an indication of general status of
the visually challenged people in India? Organizations in India need
to think about this alarming issue very seriously.

[AI] Using White Cane

2011-09-27 Thread Shyam M. Sayanekar
Indeed a very fruitful discussion is going on regarding the different aspects
of mobility. The problems faced by the blind in developed countries are quite
different from those faced in India. The science of using white cane may be
saying any thing, but every blind user has his own technique of using it, and
what suits one person may not suit another person. further, even the chois of
the type of cane also varies from person to person. However, the document,
which Jean Parker is thinking of is certainly welcome. It will make several
notions clear.

Subject: [AI] using a white cane

Dear All:

In reading the many postings about mobility, sighted guides and canes, it
is apparent that many people on this list have never had any formal
training in use of the white cane. I am thinking of those who have posted
who have become blind in adulthood or are from rural areas where blindness
rehabilitation training has not been available.

Of course there is no substitute for a structured program in rehab and
adjustment to blindness as would be received from a formal rehabilitation
center. But there are documents that clearly articulate how a white cane
is used and give detailed steps for learning, or improving cane technique.

There is one such document on the National Federation of the Blind's web
site called "The Care and Feeding of the White Cane." It is written for
conditions that would be found in developed countries but is very
applicable to our conditions in India. It is on their web site as a
series of documents by topic. I do not think it is downloadable as a
whole document. However, if enough people would find it helpful I am
willing to piece it together in word and make it available as a printable
document. I could also make notations about variations in described
techniques that would apply to our conditions.

Again, this would not substitute for formal mobility training, but for
people who have lost their vision and just need to get on with life
perhaps it would be helpful. Even though I have been a cane traveler for
many years I always get something out of it every time I read it. As a
printed document it would also be available to reluctant family members
and friends who really don't know how blind people manage independent
travel.

I would like to know if this document is something people would find of
benefit?

Hi Jean,

I've been following your mails on this topic very intently, but have not
commented so far as most of my sentiments have more or less been expressed
by others. These have been clear, comprehensive and yes, very helpful. Being
an adult having faced vision loss, mobility has been the biggest and most
frustrating adjustment to make. Added to which I grapple with a partial
hearing loss which makes many techniques to be used on the noisy, busy
streets quite a challenge. Balance, audibility, following instructions and
asking for public help is quite a daunting task.

I think anything you could put up here would definitely help, not just us,
but as you said, the families that are helping a young child with blindness,
or an adult, the right step will be taken in the right way.

Any tips for a person with more than one disability like me? I have, though,
had some training a couple of years ago, but haven't really utilized my
aquired skills to its fullest.

Thanks again for the information.

in spite of his great efforts he was unable to reach his hand at the
top. He earnestly requested the employer to provide him a ladder with
two more steps. The employer, looking at the gleaming wall and the
labour’s earnestness, arranged a ladder for him so that he can apply
his measured brushes on the remaining wall.

I feel that this is the kind of help we must aspire for. For some
people two more steps in a ladder could be taking a permanent guide
while for some it is going alone with cane occasionally taking
assistance from the by passers.

Things To Be Taken Care Of While Trying An Online Recharge
By Srikapardhi

Online Recharge - The Service that makes many people to have a curve on
their face while on the other side this word itself irritates some
people leaving bad experiences.

Today we just wanted to share some tips for our beloved readers who are
willing to try an online recharge as well as for those who are facing
problems while making payment through Online Gateway, credit or Debit
cards as we have received many Comments and Problems in our previous
reviews on Online Recharge Portals.

First of all Why an Online Recharge?

1.The first and the foremost thing is convenience-Anytime Any Where.

2.The next is Time saving, we can sit and do it just at our place-Home
or office, some services even support recharge through a Mobile
Application and Payment.

3.Some Operators may provide special Talk Time and Offers if an Online
Recharge is done through their site.

Which Operators are providing an online Recharge Service?

Starting from Government owned Network BSNL almost all Operators are
providing online Recharge facilities except Uninor. But we are sure that
very soon Uninor also comes up with an Online Recharge Portal. But each
operator differs in their service and style of providing the service.
These Online Recharge service provided by the respective operators are a
free service while some Online Recharge portals charge a minimal fees
for the service. This depends on your selection.

Things you should be taken care of before trying an Online Recharge.

1.Never ever try Online Recharges for the first time with High Recharge
Values, if anything goes wrong you will be messed up again so have a
trail recharge with lesser amounts available.

2.Even though all the Browsers support secure payment Gateway always use
Internet Explorer (mostly preferred) and the next preferred is Mozilla
Firefox followed by Opera because there needed some redirection and
scripts that need action between web pages from payment gateway to
recharge portal redirection which the latest or beta browsers have no
enhanced support inbuilt.

3.Always use an Antivirus/Spyware program and ensure that your system is
Virus/spyware free before you make any online payment, also make sure
that there are no active Key loggers in your system because they may
track the username and passwords which you keystroke into the portal.

4) Never dare to try any online Recharge on Public or Share computers
unless you take the whole responsibility and aware of the circumstances.

5) Never Press F5 or Refresh your page while you are in the middle of a
transaction, this makes your entire transaction which is a pipelined
process to go wrong or fail.

6) Be sure to check if the connection is secure or not by observing the
address link (usually a lock symbol) else you may be landed on a
phishing page.

7) Ensure that you have a good Working Internet Connectivity at the time
of recharge, sometimes you can feel your ISP is be down with slow page
loading experiences, avoid recharges during those times.

8 ) Always note down the transaction details, so that they come in handy
in case of failed transactions.

9) And the last thing is proceed only if everything is under your
control.

Just some more points:

No Online recharge Service provider or portal will cheat their "Valuable
Customers" with failed recharge transactions wantedly because there is
no individual who is sitting at the system and processing your Recharge
Payment Requests 24X7 and decide to make your Recharges successful or
fail.

It's all a Computer operated process that does automatically from the
website side, but there will be human people who give support for your
failed transactions. So, leave the belief that it is the website
cheating customers. We have used many Online Recharge Portals and now
once again our experience confirms that No System is neither 100%
Perfect nor bad. It depends on the steps and measures you follow. Also
everything should be good from the payment side too for you recharge to
be successful.

If there is any failed transaction (Power failure or any other problem
with payment) there will an alternate backup channel both from the bank
side as well as from the Website's side so that they get information
regarding the failed transactions separately.

This process usually takes about 3-7 days as the backup channel data is
not always available with the Recharge Portal. They take this data in
failed groups and this takes time. Also for the Refund of your money
even though the Recharge portal reverts the amount within 3-4 days it
takes time for your bank to give a statement for the refund as all the
refunds will have another channel working for them.

And we are sorry to say that under some worst situations

Hello
You can consider using the folding cane. It may help get over the initial
inhibition using a cane.

Hi Ajay,

I am in the same situation as you are in. Some vision and wearing
glasses.

One of my friends told me to start using a white cane when we have
some vision as it becomes that easy to get used to it. The biggest
challenge is to get rid of the initial inhibitions. Once you can do
it, it will be good.

I have no formal
training in mobility and to great extent I don't know how to use cane
but

the point I trying to make is delhi or Mumbai are 100 times more bigger
cities than barnala or sangrur and in small cities the condition of
roads

is
very ugly thereare many pits in the road and other than this the roads
are
not smooth and the cane stucks sometimes and if u r going in a motion
than

u
most probably in front of cane and it is not a desirable situation when
I
was in Chandigarh which is a bigger city than barnala or sangrur where
the

traffic is more compared to barnala or sangrur I won't face such kind of
problems as the roads are more smoother and one more thing that I walk
through the main bazazar and the main road even in these places the
situation is not good when I started to go in the office for the first
month
or so I was not able to locate the location of the pits or holes but now
I
am able to find those by my cane as I have come to know about location
of

these holes and pits the cane is very useful even if u don't know how to
use
this as it lets the other people know that u have some kind of problem
aand
they start to travel more carefully when they are near u regarding
taking
help from people I never shy away from this when ever I think it
necessary
there are all kind of people in this world some of them are ready to
help

us
and they r enough for me to walk around where ever I want to go . Having
confidence in your's ability is must and never take risk and never shy
away
from taking help of others when ever u r in need if one does not offer u
help and don't hesitate asking other . to have a sighted escort is a
desirable situation but some of us are not able to afford it and self
independence is also desirable regarding struggling in some places it
happens and you have to accept it and you have to live with it it does
not

matter what any one else is thinking what matters is that I am able to
feed
my family on my own .

The calendar table does open, but somewhere at the bottom of the page.
Press space bar on the read only field which should turn the forms

for the letter combinations such as su or mo and you should find the
table.

Bye the way, what exactly are you facing with the IRCTC?

Re: [AI] Date picker on Yatra.com?

2011-09-27 Thread Viraj Kafle
The calendar table does open, but somewhere at the bottom of the page.
Press space bar on the read only field which should turn the forms
mode on, and again if it does not turn off automaticaly. Then search
for the letter combinations such as su or mo and you should find the
table.

Bye the way, what exactly are you facing with the IRCTC?

Dear sir,

Do not speak about piracy softwares in the list.
There is a rule in the list that we should not discus about these
pirated softwares.
So keep in mind or other vise the moderator will take action against you.
You sent to someone who you know.
Piracy is not allowed in this list.
