Re: [AI] Some doubts regarding braille

2013-04-01 Thread Sandeep Singh

Dear Ajay,
You can easily learn braille in a month. You can of course keep
practicing later on and improve your reading and writing speeds.
Learning writing is easier than reading but you can certainly do it
in the specified time period and as Harish said it would be quite
handy in many situations.

Best regards,
Sandeep

Hello friends,
I think, most of you know about me.
Well for those who don't know, I am currently pursuing my final year
of graduation from commerce streme.
I started using screan readers and other assistive devices in april 2010.
I had enough vision at that time to support me in my studies as well
as mobility.
Since december 2011, due to a sudden diminish in my eyesight, I had to
switch to scanning and OCR for my studies and white cane for my
mobility needs.
Since then, I am dependent on my laptop for note taking and other tasks.
I appeared for cat 2012 and got shortlisted for the 2nd round of
addmission process of Some IIMs.
It was obvious that I never thought of learning braille due to that
sudden changing senario of my life.
Now when the things are quite setteled down and I find myself
comfortable with allmost all the things which I use, I want to ask all
the professionals on this list that should I learn braille?
I know it may prove really helpful in my day to day tasks but apart
from that what benifits of braille do you people see in today's
corporate world?
If got selected then, I will be having appropsimattely 1 month with
me. So can I learn reading and writing english language using braille
in this time span?
I request all those people who are working specially in corporate
world to give me proper guidance.

Re: [AI] Some doubts regarding braille

2013-04-01 Thread bhawani shankar verma
this will help you to take short notes on your study. also to take handouts
of your study matterials. anything you want to note instantly. any paragraph
or part of a book, which you have to quote and unable to remember, you can
right down it on braille and can read. unfortunately, computing techniques
can't do these things due to its transitory structure. undoubtedly, braille
is a basic need for the blind.

Re: [AI] Training

2013-04-01 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Kanchan,
My answers are inline.

2. What do you want corporate training on? I thought of interpersonal skills
at the office and anything else that they teach their regular employees.
PL] The problem with interpersonal skills is that the trainer may not know
about the unique issues that the blind face. For example, the whole issue of
body language, eye contact etc. Some listers have suggested table manners.
We have experienced one such exercise. http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in

[AI] Some doubts regarding braille

2013-04-01 Thread Ajay Minocha
I request all those people who are working specially in corporate
world to give me proper guidance.
regards

[AI] good talking book library on the internet!

2013-04-01 Thread mukesh jain
hello,
as i am fond of reading gujarati materials, i was trying to locate
good library who is offering the talking books that can be played on
normal mp3 players, i tried googling lot for it but couldn't find any
worht results. but recently, i have found one good library offering
this service and thinking that you too might be interested in reading
such books, sharing the information here and what more, you can also
have the books in punjabi, bengali and urdu.

before recommending this site, i myself purchased few books from them
and enjoyed listening as they are recorded on a very proffessional
quallity so if you are interested, go through the information given
below:

Tiger Books Limited, the parent company of
indiantalkingbooks.com
was established in London, United Kingdom in 1985 in response to
demand for spoken word books in Urdu, Hindi, Panjabi, Gujerati and
Bengali languages.
Originally these audio books were published as a resource for sight
impaired listeners who could not read the printed material, but very
soon talking books
emerged also as a listening entertainment during long journeys by car
train and planes and making mundane tasks like cooking, ironing and
cleaning the
house a pleasure.  These books  offer stories, novels, biographies and
religious works among other subjects.

Audio Books also serve as a tool to learn a language and an aid to
pronunciation in language laboratories in universities, schools and
colleges and help
people who understand a  language but cannot read the script.

With technology changing our lives rapidly more and more people have
access to the internet, and with the advent of MP3 players the
indiantalkingbooks.com
site gives everyone a chance to download their favourite book as MP3.
Whether you are young or old, at home or out and about it is now
easier than ever
to download and listen to these books at any time.

and the URL to this library is:
www.indiantalkingbooks.com

good thing with this site is that before making any purchase, you can
listen to these books in sample mode for few minutes, then make your
decision accordingly.
so enjoy listening,
thanks,
mukesh.

[AI] ChromeVox - a screen reader for Chrome

2013-04-01 Thread Prashant Naik
Hi,

I am sharing a piece of information with regard to a query by Silpa
Mallipeddi on chrome accessibility. I have purposely changed the subject
line to open this thread on ChromeVox.

This is for exploration and information purpose. Those who have explored
more can write their views and experiences on this. I have explored a bit.
I tired with ChromeVox 1.26.0 extension on Google chrome.
ChromeVox

ChromeVox is a screen reader for Chrome.

One can use it on Windows or Mac PC with Google chrome browser as an add-on
or with Chrome operating system it is in-built. ChromeVox works with your
existing screen reader.

For info on Installing ChromeVox in Google Chrome visit link
http://www.ChromeVox.com/installing.html

To read info on ChromeVox visit link
http://www.ChromeVox.com/

For ChromeVox interactive tutorial visit link
http://www.ChromeVox.com/tutorial/index.html

It has good female TTS voice.

Once installed extensions it starts when you launch Google chrome
Some quick reference keystrokes are

Control + alt are your ChromeVox keys.

Control + alt + down arrow – for page navigation by paragraph (object level)

Control + alt + equals – to change by character, word or paragraph (to
change object level).

Has jump commands - Control + alt + n or p and then followed by jump by
heading then press h, by link press l, etc.

Use of sticky mode – press insert key twice to activate and deactivate.

To deactivate it press control + alt + A twice.

For Disabling ChromeVox

Open Chrome menu (alt + f) and select "Tools", then "Extensions". Look for
ChromeVox in your list of installed extensions and uncheck the Enabled
checkbox.

You can turn ChromeVox off at any time by opening the Chrome wrench menu
and selecting "Tools", then "Extensions". Look for ChromeVox in your list
of installed extensions and uncheck the Enabled checkbox.

Re: [AI] training.

2013-04-01 Thread Amar Jain
Hi Mam,

Based on what I have observed:
 1. Body language,
2. Table etiquettes,
3. Grooming in general,
4. Drafting and formatting (a part of business communication),
5. An overview of differences in the corporate practices followed in
big countries, along with internationally accepted practices are the
other topics which I feel can be included.

A general observation, we need not change the basic modules greatly to
make it disability compliant. As everything becomes easier once the
hesitation of accepting and talking about our disability is gone.
Also, verbal communication should not be extensively covered, as
generally we are good at it. Rest all depends on the kind of targeted
audience, and other such factors.

Please take it as my personal opinion, as you are more experienced than me.

Regards,

Re: [AI] Kartik Sawhney - Maths

2013-04-01 Thread Kartik Sawhney
Hi,

To be honest, there were very few techniques or adaptations that I
used. Tactile graphics was one of the most important things that
helped me in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. For calculations in
Math, I used spreadsheets. Although applications are available for
writing Math, I did not use any of those as I found them very tedious.
To get a basic idea of the graphs (only monotonicity), I relied on
audio feedback. Things like Organic Chemistry were difficult to manage
initially, but I used a self-defined convention that supplemented the
IUPAC convention. This convention allowed me to take notes in
classroom quickly. However, during examinations, i made it a point to
use only the standard convention laid down by IUPAC.

Let me know if you have any specific questions or problems, and I will
try to help to the best of my ability.

Best,

Re: [AI] Training

2013-04-01 Thread Apoorv Kulkarni
Hello Kanchan mam,

A topic one could cover is how to communicate once nature of disability, and
how to fine tune job responsibilities to enable one to work most
effectively. A parallel example that I can recall is the training a company
use to give its women employees and its managers to bring out points around
working hours for women, work from home for single or expecting mothers,
modifying work settings during pregnancy, etc.

I think that having a professional and non-disabled prospective on
discussing disability at work place will bolster an individual's confidence
to have a mature discussion, without feeling apprehensive or ashamed about
it.

Regards,

Apoorv

This is a big news and moment to be proud about.
Kartik, one of the youngest Accessindian, perhaps one of the first totally
blind by birth child to have persued science at +2 level has got admission
to a world renowned University to pursue computer science engeneering.
Stanford located in California, USA is considered to be one of the most
prestigious universities in the United States and the world.

My guess is that he would be also one of the first few blind student who
have used computer in their classroom and home for studying all subjects
right from class 1.

His achievement will surely guide many others. His case study is also a
proof of effectiveness of integrated education and the use of technology
for

reading and writing.

Congrats Kartik, well done. You have faced many challenges in pursuing
science studies till now and I am sure that you will easily overcome the
hurdles that you will face in your chosen career path easily.

Hi,

I have just completed class XII in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
this year, and am now awaiting the results. With the new guidelines by
the MSJE now in place which allow a lab assistant to take observations
on your behalf, you may want to check with the university/college you
are interested in to check if it is willing to accomodate you.
Unfortunately, I do not really expect a positive response in the first
go.

You may have to convince them quite a bit (I had to convince the IITs
for engineering, and have not succeeded so far). Trying, though, will
not be a bad idea. Who knows.

All the very best!

May be we can add Bangalore too. Some topics I could think are:
1. Corporate culture
2. Working globally
3. Managing time effectively
4. Leadership skills
5. Understanding business and company goals
6. Effective communications

Makes sense? As always, thank you for your effort.

[AI] Training

2013-04-01 Thread Kanchan Pamnani
Hi friends,
I had a chat with someone in CSR of a very big consultancy firm a month ago.
Apart from the initial introduction to blindness and low vision, I covered
screenreaders and some other issues. I of course told them that they need to
sensitise their HR people about our capabilities. This is easier said than
done. Sigh.

Nonetheless The CSR team would like to help in anyway that we can tell them.

I have suggested that they conduct some training for our young employees with
their regular trainers at their own conference room so that our trainees get
the feel of the real thing and there is no cost on us nor do we have to
organise anything much.

So now big boss from CSR is coming to meet me on Thursday and I need help.
1. In which cities, could we organise 25 visually challenged trainees for this
training. I am sure of Mumbai and Delhi.

2. What do you want corporate training on? I thought of interpersonal skills at
the office and anything else that they teach their regular employees.
3. If you want a series of trainings then what?

4. If you want their employees as volunteers then apart from reading what else
do yu want them to do.

OK now waiting for feedback before Thursday.

This is a really big company- probably the biggest in the world in their own
space.
