[AI] Vacating Disabled coach in New Delhi Railway Station.
Friends, Here I would like to share a bad experience of Disabled Coach of Karnataka Express (New Delhi to Bangluru) in New Delhi Railway Station. I had went to see off one of my visually Disabled friend to Bangalore through Karnataka Express on 26th April, he had Waiting list ticket which was not confirmed, I tried him to get into Disabled Coach which is attached behind Engine, before our arrival the coach was full of general passangers, we went and complained to Railway Police who was nearby he threatened us (Agar Jana hi to Jao warna bagh yeha se) if you want to get in go otherwise run away from here, we went and even requested the guard also his reply was (I am having other work also I can't do anything) at last my friend got into the Disabled Coach and when the train moved he noticed that railway police persons came in and collected Rs.50/ from each general passangers they also told my friend you give us Rs.100/ we will get you upper seat inside the disabled coach so that you can go to bangalore without any problem. Disabled coach was totally packed with general passangers until it reached Bangalore. My friend said in future he will never travel in Disabled Coach. So I request mail members to send complaint numbers of northern Railways to whom we can complain this matter he also said in many stations public even threatened him if the situation of Disabled coach in New Delhi Station is such a manner then what else the situation is in other station. Please send railway complain numbers regarding this issue. -- vivek, Ph.919868954833, New Delhi Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Well, being a late blind and now totally blind, I am able to match colours of my kurties and jeans. Yes, its true once I have to ask all colours which are on only one kurti, because nowadays drashes are in maltipal colours. Even while shopping also I am habitual to ask which portion is in which colour by touching all designs to my dear ones and sales man/girl. Then after visualisation of colours and designs, no problem in matching anytime ,even I am alone also at my home or during some trainings. Just for curiosity, I would like to know, how is it possible to recognize colours of dress being a born blind? Means, how he/she can know pink kurti/ti shirt is full match with blue/black jeans. At Vamshi, whats reason regarding you have to put matching pairs in covers when outside of home? Bijal patel. Re: [AI] is there any computer training for blind girl in Delhi?
Dear Shona, I hope you would have informed her about various trainings like training in stanography, Hindi typing on manual type writer and computers by AICB. AICB has hostel facility too for it's trainees. To get into any of the course, she needs to clear the entrance test which generally is conducted in the last week of July every year. AICB is also into the placement of VIs into the government sector. Since she wants to get into the government sector, I think this information should help her. There she too can avail volunteer facility on request for preparing competitive exams. I personally would suggest her to prepare well for the entrance. For more detailsabout the courses you can either call on 011-27054082 or mail at aicbde...@yahoo.com . [AI] Diabetes warning over soft drinks
hi pasting below article from bbc Diabetes warning over soft drinks People should consume fewer sugar-sweetened soft drinks, say European scientists Drinking one or more cans of sugary soft drinks a day is linked to an increased risk of diabetes in later life, a study suggests. A can a day raises the relative risk of Type-2 diabetes by about a fifth, compared with one can a month or under, say European scientists. The report in the journal Diabetologia mirrors previous US findings. A diabetes charity recommends limiting sugary foods and drinks as they are calorific and can cause weight gain. The latest research was carried out in the UK, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Sweden, France and the Netherlands. Some 350,000 individuals were questioned about their diet, as part of a large European study looking at links between diet and cancer. "The consumption of sugar sweetened soft drinks increases your risk of diabetes - so for every can of soft drinks that you drink per day, the risk is higher," lead researcher Dora Romaguera from Imperial College London told BBC News. She called for clearer public health information on the effects of sugary soft drinks. “In and of themselves, sugary soft drinks are only part of the picture - they're just one of the potential risk factors for Type-2 diabetes” Professor Patrick Wolfe University College London "Given the increase in sweet beverage consumption in Europe, clear messages on its deleterious effect on health should be given to the population," Dr Romaguera and colleagues conclude in their research paper. 'Not definitive evidence' An increased risk of diabetes was also linked to drinking artificially sweetened soft drinks, but this disappeared when body mass index was taken into account. Fruit juice consumption was not associated with diabetes incidence, however. Commenting on the results, Dr Matthew Hobbs, head of research at Diabetes UK, said the link between sugar-sweetened soft drinks and Type-2 diabetes persisted even when body mass index was taken into account. This suggests the increased risk is not solely due to extra calories, he said. "Even so, it is not definitive evidence that sugar-sweetened soft drinks increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, other than through their effect on body weight," he added. "We do, though, already recommend limiting consumption of sugary foods and drinks as these are usually high in calories and so can lead to weight gain if you have too many of them. "This is important for Type 2 diabetes because we know that maintaining a healthy weight is the single most important thing you can do to prevent it." Statistics expert Professor Patrick Wolfe, from University College London, said the absolute risk of Type-2 diabetes is low at about 4% of the adult UK population. "In and of themselves, sugary soft drinks are only part of the picture - they're just one of the potential risk factors for Type-2 diabetes," he said. "But since they are one we can easily eliminate - by switching to diet soft drinks or, even better, cutting them out of our diets altogether - it makes good sense to do so." Gavin Partington, director general of the drinks industry body the British Soft Drinks Association said: "Soft drinks are safe to consume but, like all other food and drink, should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet." Re: [AI] Recharging mobile on Mobikwik web site
Login with your credentials in order to recharge. You need to add the mobile number (if other than the one provided at the time of registration) to be recharged. It allows adding upto 20 numbers. You can then see the list of numbers in a tabulated form displayed on the Account Details (someone please correct the page name if required). The link to recharge a number is on the same row. Hit the link and it provides a textbox where you need to enter the recharge amount. Enter the amount and proceed with the recharge. Note that it adds any additional amount paid to your mobikwik wallet for use in future. You need to try it out and a little practice will raise your comfort level. hth... On 4/29/13, Vamshi. Re: [AI] about skype & facebook chat
Skype has been facing the issue for almost the last one week at my end. I installed instantbird to try and find an alternative. But it had the same issue at the beginning, but no misunderstanding instantbird is now working fine with my facebook contacts, and its running right now on my computer. I don't know how it happened, but since yesterday evening, my instantbird started showing the status of my facebook friends correctly. Re: [AI] Recharging mobile on Mobikwik web site
this webpage is anyday better than paytm. The other day, patm decided to put my 1100 rupees of a failed recharcge into the paytm wallet & informed me that i could not withdraw entire amount to my card & that the balance even can't be used to make any postpaid payments. Re: [AI] What type of work is alloated to us in bank as P.O.?
Hi Aartee, congratulations for this success! Pls find below the list of job handled by VIs in banks. Moreover, you can join the mailing list, Visually Impaired Bankers Group of India (VIB Group), for discussing the banking issues exclusively. You will find here hundreds of bankers and many from UBI as well. [AI] [flight-wethepwd:794] Re: National Institute of Design Bill, 2013
So I don't think this Bill is the place for such a query, quite simply because it is just on the governance and duties of this particular academic institute. It is not like the NID designs everything for the Government of India, though at times they may be referred some work. What we are saying is that in cases where the NID takes up assignments, they must use principles of Universal Design. What you are looking for is to make accessibility measures, like for instance the National Building Code, to be implemented. If we want that all Public/Govt buildings be mandatorily seeking accessibility advisories, this is not the Bill for that. I can imagine this finding a place in the Persons with Disabilities Legislation, or within the National Building Code. But in the National Institute of Design Bill, this is not a clause which can be incorporated. I hope that clarifies the issue. [AI] SC to examine validity of IT rules making online censorship mandatory for portal
Legal experts Please enlighten us on the impact this ruling could have on the functioning of AccessIndia. In my personal opinion this is very bitter to swallow and violative of Fundamental rights. Anyways, read on. Harish Kotian The Supreme Court has agreed to examine the validity of Information Technology Rules making it mandatory for a website owner to screen content and exercise online censorship of the contents posted on the portal. A bench of Justices T S Thakur and S J Mukhopadhaya issued the notice to the Centre and all the states on a PIL filed by a company which runs a portal challenging Information Technology (Intermediaries Guidelines) Rules, 2011. Re: [AI] SC to examine validity of IT rules making online censorship mandatory for portal
Hai Harish: I have been following these rules for quite sometime. Especially clause 66A of the IT Act had been invoked in punishing those who expressed political views like Prof. Ambikesh Mohapatra of Jhadavpur University for posting a caricature of WB chief minister. Also, I'm sure you all remember the case against two college students for posting politically sensitive messages in Maharashtra. Based on all these, it is clear that the law enforcers target only politically sensitive postings on public platform. The case mentioned in your message mentions that the SC is examining restrictive rules and has issued noticed in that regard. If you are concerned, it would be better to scrap archiving and make the group private. regards, Subramani On 4/30/13, Kotian, H P wrote: > Legal experts > > Please enlighten us on the impact this ruling could have on the functioning > of AccessIndia. > > In my personal opinion this is very bitter to swallow and violative of > Fundamental rights. > Anyways, read on. > Harish Kotian > > The Supreme Court has agreed to examine the validity of Information > Technology Rules making it mandatory for a website owner to screen content > and exercise online censorship of the contents posted on the portal. [AI] The disconnect with disability,By Dorodi Sharma
TAKING STOCK:It is important to hear the voices of a significant number of the disabled who live in the global South, a place where development has greater meaning and impact. —PHOTO: THE HINDU PHOTO ARCHIVES The Hindu: April 30, 2013. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-opinion/the-disconnect-with-disability/article4668526.ece Friday, April 5, 2013, marked an important day in the global development agenda. From this day, there would only be a thousand days more to achieve the targets set by the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) to the extent possible. Although the performance of the MDGs has come under tremendous critique, it cannot be refuted that these goals have given the world a unified development agenda on poverty, education and gender issues. There are two parallel tracks of discussions currently ongoing: one that is more focused on the post-2015 agenda, and the other which urges caution in shifting the focus to post-2015, underlining the fact that it may be too soon to write-off the MDGs. This is a good time for people with disabilities to take stock of things. Discrimination Although a substantial percentage of the world’s population is affected by disability, there is no mention of disability in the MDGs. This despite the well-established connection between disability and poverty, the fact that children with disabilities are the ones who have been left behind, and the fact that women with disabilities are even more marginalised and face multiple discrimination. In India, home to 70-100 million people with disabilities, a study in 2003 conducted by the National Centre for Promotion for Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) showed that only 0.51 per cent of students with disabilities were enrolled in mainstream schools. Likewise, a survey of the top 100 companies of India in 1999 showed an average rate of employment of 0.4 per cent for persons with disabilities. These figures haven’t improved over the years. A review done by NCPEDP recently shows that less than one per cent of students with disabilities are in top colleges and universities, and less than one per cent of people with disabilities are finding employment. Today, the World Health Organisation says that one billion people, or 15 per cent of the world’s population, live with disability. Of them, 800 million or 80 per cent live in the global South. People with disabilities comprise 20 per cent of the world’s poorest. In this scenario, it is not only imperative that disability is intrinsic to the processes for fulfilling the MDGs by 2015, but must also be a significant part of debate, discussions and outcomes of the post-2015 development agenda. Steps forward To do so, it is important for the global disability movement to take into account a number of factors. Looking South: if 800 million of the world’s one billion people with disabilities live in the global South where development has a far significant meaning and impact, it is essential that their voices are heard, and heard loud and clear. High-level meeting on disability and development: one of the most significant milestones in the disability movement is the upcoming U.N. High Level Meeting on Disability and Development in New York on September 23, 2013. This meeting will hopefully set the tone for inclusion of disability in the global development agenda. Advocacy is required to ensure that governments take this meeting with the seriousness it deserves. It is also important to connect this meeting with the opening of the General Assembly debate on September 24, 2013 and the special event on MDGs on September 25, 2013. Engaging with national governments: it is essential to garner the support of Member States for disability and for them to include it in their country’s priorities. Disability is a non-political issue and the chances of it being opposed are less. However, the probability of it not making to a majority of the countries’ list of priorities is much higher. Disability as a development issue: the fact that disability is a crosscutting issue has by and large been well-established. But the new argument put forward by disability rights advocates is that it is not just a human rights issue but also a development issue. Therefore, it needs to be looked from that point of view as well. Going to the grassroots: to reach that last person with disability in the remotest corner of our villages, it is essential that we focus on the grassroots. We need to adopt a sense of caution at the sudden, seemingly top down disability agenda and related advocacy. Leaving disability out of the development agenda is a mistake the world cannot afford a second time. It is time that all stakeholders are nudged into action to avoid doing so. Re: [AI] SC to examine validity of IT rules making online censorship mandatory for portal
If the rules are struck down by SC, it would be okay. A website owner is different from a newspaper editor. This fact must be argued before SC. Hopefully, SC would go in tandem with international trends, a website owner is not mandated to exercise censorship, but must remove any offending/illegal content if give notice of the same by law enforcement agencies... -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Kotian, H P Sent: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 10:34 AM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] SC to examine validity of IT rules making online censorship mandatory for portal Legal experts Please enlighten us on the impact this ruling could have on the functioning of AccessIndia.
Yes, Rajesh sir is right. In fact Section 66A of Information Technology Act 2000 states that "any person who sends, by means of a computer resource or communication device, any information that was grossly offensive or has a menacing character could be punished with imprisonment for a maximum term of three years, besides imposing appropriate fine." And if you remember friends, Chief Justice Altamas Kabir in the month of January, while hearing two Public Interest Litigations (PIL) sought response from the government on the arrest of Two young girls in Maharashtra. Petitioner argued that impugned provisions were "draconian and arbitrary" in nature, according unreasonable leeway to the police and other authorities of misusing them. The PIL has demanded striking down the impugned provisions. But one thing we need to notice here, that the phraise "reasonable restriction" always saves the government. Because article 21 of The Indian Constitution also provides freedom of speech and expression with so called reasonable restriction... I don't think the news item discussed here, will effect indipendent functioning of AI Mailing Group. So keep them coming.
