[AI] A Boon for the Physically Challenged
A Boon for the Physically Challenged # news/181_1464301,00030006 Overcoming the Challenge No lip service. No big promises. No high talks. Just plain and simple delivery. That's what the Internet and computers have done for the disabled in the last few years. In a country like ours being handicapped is perhaps a curse, Internet has finally turned the tables. A Boon for the Physically Challenged Internet has turned out to be a boon for the physically challenged. For the disabled, the Internet offers great opportunities because it enables them to exchange information, to organize menus and to establish and keep up contacts with other people, irrespective of their disabilities. According to Sussman in her book titled "Opening Doors to an Inaccessible World", she says "For the first time in their lives, many disabled people find themselves able to belong somewhere, a virtual community where they can be swept along by daily events, as in any other community." Chris Murphy has done commendable work compiling some of the problems the handicapped face and how computers have assisted them in overcoming them. His site is available on http://courses.cs.vt.edu/~cs3604/lib/Disabilities/murhpy.AT.html#Sussman For the Blind Braille keys, speech synthesizers, Braille printers and other devices enable a blind person to interact and communicate just like any other person. A blind person can send emails, work on the word processors and even on some of the graphic packages. For the physically challenged Computers are generally controlled by hand, using a keyboard, a mouse, or a trackerball. Many people who are unable to use their hands are thus disenfranchised from using this equipment. Recent developments have enabled controlling computers by eye rather than by hands. For the deaf Programs have been developed to offer training and practice for the hearing-impaired in such things as sign language, finger spelling, and even lip-reading. These programs are not just limited to the deaf or hearing-impaired. All the user needs is a system with a microphone and the correct software. Technology is the bridge Technology is helping the handicapped take on greater professional challenges. Internet offers excellent scope for telecommuting job. Take the case of this little gizmo which enables a handicapped person to perform normal computer operations. A Micromeasurements binocular eye-tracker, which has been configured to send x,y co-ordinates of eye position (and also pupil size) to the PC which the person is viewing. Software on the PC takes this information and sends it to Windows as a mouse signal, and the x,y co-ordinates determine the screen cursor position. Selection (the emulation of pressing the button on a mouse) is achieved by the software detecting an "unnatural event". This can be either when the eye is held still for half a second, or when the person winks: a blink is natural and a wink (at a computer) is unnatural. The use of a binocular system allows the closure of the right and left eyes to emulate pushing the right and left mouse buttons respectively. Other smart devices Magnifiers CCTV Magnifiers Computer Screen Magnification Speech Access and Screen Readers Braille Tools Tactile Graphics & Multimedia Adaptive Keyboards GPS Navigation Recently VisuAide, a company making equipment for the impaired, announced the release of Trekker 2.0, an enhanced version of its GPS system for the blind. The new version includes features such as the motorized mode, allowing use in a moving vehicle, the route mode, which generates point-to-point itineraries, and the free mode, offering off-route information. Trekker users can pinpoint exactly where they are, learn about area attractions, and find out how to get to specific destinations. GPS lets them know their location, anywhere in the world, with continually growing precision. Trekker offers the visually impaired greater freedom. It includes features allowing blind persons to know their exact position, create itineraries and receive information while traveling to a destination on foot or in a vehicle. Trekker also offers a search feature for a database of points of interest such as restaurants, hotels, office buildings, etc. Regards, Vishal Jain Ph : 080-41140564 Website : http://vishal.hello.googlepages.com To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Mental Arithmetic Helps Blind Excel In Subject
Hello friends, Below is an article which may really help mathematics students to increase the speed of calculating mentally. There are people even in India who take these kind of classes. Mental Arithmetic Helps Blind Excel In Subject KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 (Bernama) -- Twenty-three teachers have been given an intensive course in mental arithmetic, the use of the brain to calculate, proven to enable visually impaired students to excel in the subject. Dr Dino Wong, founder of the system and president of the Universal Concept in Mental Arithmetic System (UC MAS), Global Education Group, said 21 teachers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Pendidikan Khas, a special school for the visually impaired in Jalan Batu here and another two from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) Tanjung Malim, Perak attended the two-day training. Organised by UC MAS in cooperation with the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) and the school, it was to ensure that visually impaired students could be given the edge in the subject, he told Bernama at the closing of the course here Friday. He said visually impaired students generally performed poorly in Mathematics and Science. "However, mental arithmetic can help them excel in the subject since they just need to use the abacus by touching the beads and mentally absorb the calculation. "If sighted students use this programme, they would become less focused since their eyes would wander and they get distracted. "This is why we considered having this programme to help them (blind students). They have an advantage in learning the technique because of their better natural power of concentration," he added. Dear Sandesh, You may approach Sri Bhagavan Mahaveer Jain College VV Puram Bangalore. He would have surely got admission in that college, but it is already late as the classes have already commenced. Any way, you may request the chairman as earlier as possible. A Visually Challenged boy Akshay have recently completed +2 in Science with 90% overall. He was given exemption for practicals and had viva as an alternative. He has around 25% vision and have already got admission for Engineering in Electronics. [AI] Free online advance computer course from Australia
Hello friends, Below are the details of a very interesting free online course provided by Sysco from Australia. I spoke with him and good thing is he wants to start the training even in India. *** World's First' Free, Accessible IT Training Course Goes live. What is claimed to be the world's first free, accessible, online learning programme teaching people the basics of computer maintenance and networking has been launched in Australia. The course is open for anyone to apply, from anywhere in the world. The course runs for two days per week over a one year period. Students learn the fundamentals of computer operating systems and network infrastructure, learning how to build a computer and install different versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system; how to maintain and use networking equipment; and how to install and run medium to large-sized networks. The course is endorsed by networking infrastructure company Cisco. According to Iain Murray, course co-coordinator at the Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia, all of the content is accessible to a person with an internet connection and assistive equipment such as a screen reader or text magnifier. "We have made notes for JAWS users on accessing the online material but it works just as well with other products including VoiceOver on Apple machines," Murray told E-Access Bulletin. Live lectures are delivered using the 'Skype' internet telephone service, which has negligible cost, he said. According to Murray, graphs, diagrams and mathematical notation have been made accessible. "The course is not overly mathematical but does include a significant amount of binary and hexadecimal conversions. For this we have developed a 'peg board'. It's a very simple device that consists of a piece of wood or plastic with three rows of 32 holes in it. This also allows the calculation of IP addresses and subnets. We ask that students attempt to get one of these made locally, but if that is not possible we ship one to them, at no charge," said Murray. *** For more information you may visit the below given links. http://cisco.netacad.net They are currently teaching the CCNA 1 & 2 and the IT Essentials 1 & 2, with plans to start CCNA 3 & 4, Fundamentals of Wireless Networks and Fundamentals of Security in 2008. The other site is www.ece.curtin.edu.au/~iain/CAVI/Class_notes It has some of the lecture recordings and other course material they have been using. There is also a discussion list that their existing students use that you may wish to browse through http://www.gotss.net/mailman/listinfo/cavi-discuss for details. Here I also read about some Visually Challenged students who are doing computer Engineering. Prospective students can find out more by emailing Iain Murray on: [EMAIL PROTECTED] . [AI] Has an era of superfast colour printing come?
Has an era of superfast colour printing come? Apr 21, 2007 Edgeline technology launched by HP spat out prints at 60 to 70 pages a minute 500 engineers create `paper-wide' print head First printers fuelled by ``Edgeline'' will come in May CUTTING EDGE: Costumed as the legendary Chinese female warrior Mulan, HP's Asia-Pacific vice-president Kelly Tan (right) launches the company's latest products into the printer battlefield, in Beijing recently. Business Manager Paul Lim holds up the `Edgeline' print head. Bangalore: Forget everything you ever learnt from the eternal inkjet-versus-laser printer debate. They have rewritten the rules, re-invented the inkjet and created new technology that will soon have printers churning graphics-rich pages - and glossy colour photos - at better than one-a-second. Nearly 10 years in the making and harnessing the efforts of over 500 engineers (including a team based in Bangalore), a new technology unveiled by Hewlett Packard promises better-than-laser speed and quality, using the `wet' printing process of inkjets, generally associated in the public mind with the first entry-level printers they can afford. But this is no ordinary inkjet. We know what the normal print head looks like - it's that replacement cartridge one buys when the ink runs out. The new technology known as Edgeline, extends the print head all the way across the carriage. This makes a huge difference: Instead of the head zipping to and fro across the paper width, spitting out ink to make up the image, it now stands still - and prints the full page width at one go. Only the paper moves forward - one line at a time. Regards Vishal Jain. This effectively halves the time to print an average page - and this correspondent got to operate the first-ever colour printers based on Edgeline technology (CM 8050 and CM8060) that were launched by HP in Beijing last week, as they spat out prints at 60 to 70 pages a minute - that is better than one a second. These are not your average home printers; they are floor-standing corporate models that look like small offset printing machines - only they are much cleverer. They come with a 10-inch touch-screen and a speaker system - so that if a malfunction occurs - if a paper gets jammed for example - a video display zooms to the location of the problem and a voice guides you till you rectify the problem. It is called AutoNav - and the idea seems to be, that you don't have to be an `ustad' or master printer to operate such complex production models. Other `cool' features include the ability to detect if a page downloaded from the Web uses colour only incidentally - like the blue of the web links and addresses - and then to print the page economically, at the higher monochrome speeds. Each of HP's Edgeline print head has over 10,000 separate nozzles - and about one-fifth of them are on `stand-by' ready to kick in if any nozzle gets clogged. The CM8060 actually uses five or six print heads to encompass the four colours. ``It's the best of both world's - colour and mono chrome,'' Kelly Tan, HP's vice-president in Asia-Pacific (Enterprise and Speciality Printing) told me - and clearly she sees Edgeline as a sort of `agni-asthra' or secret weapon, as the company prepares enter the battle in the corporate and high-end printing `maidan.' Which may why she leaped on to the stage, at the Beijing launch event last week, `dressed to kill,' in costume as Mulan, China's legendary female warrior, who in the fifth century AD rode to battle, disguised as a man when her father was killed... much like our own Jhansi ki Rani. The backdrop was an appropriately macho quotation from Sun Tzu's military classic ``The Art of War.'' The Edgeline-fuelled printers will hit the Indian market next month - but even if you could afford it, you couldn't buy one. HP plans to offer it only in a pay-by-use service model to corporate users - for now. All it's promising is a minimum 30 per cent saving in printing costs over comparable work. The rest of us may have to wait some months - or years - before Edgeline's dizzy speeds come to our `janata' models. Meanwhile, watch out for self-service photo printing kiosks - HP isn't saying so, but these are likely to be the first mass consumer applications of this zippy new printer technology. [AI] Making it easier for the disabled
Making it easier for the disabled Apr 9, 2007 The Jindal trust chairperson would like help to improve access to public utilities for the physically challenged. Sminu Jindal is seized with a passion to remove obstacles in the way of the disabled, be it on roads, airports, schools, hotels or petrol pumps. The wheelchair-borne chairperson of SJ Charitable Trust, which provides consultancy services to organisations to make their buildings easily accessible to the disabled, says she would like to have NGOs on board too. "In fact, anyone who is willing to walk with us," she says. The fee is over Rs 1 lakh for private buildings while the government ones get the service for Rs 50,000. The fee, she says, is intended to make governments and companies take the reports seriously. But Sminu is disappointed with the government. She says her trust carried out accessibility audits for the New Delhi Municipal Corporation facilities as well as sites under the Archaelogical Survey of India. None of the two have implemented her suggestions. The trust is now talking to HPCL and BPCL, which plan to make all petrol pumps accessible to the disabled. ITC has also asked for a report and so has the NDMC, which wants to make its school buildings disabled-friendly, says Sminu, who is disappointed that most buildings and roads in the country are hostile to the disabled. The trust also sends resource persons to various organisations to sensitise employees on the needs and abilities of persons with disabilities. It is now looking at Rajasthan and Haryana governments as partners in making buildings and thoroughfares accessible. "Haryana is my native state and I would love to work with the government there. I am hoping that day comes soon," she says. Sminu , who became handicapped at the age of 11 when she met with an accident, hopes to reach out to more people through her website, which brings together information on education, rehabilitation, employment and even matrimony and companionship. "The idea is to enable each person with disability to access all the information he or she needs," says Jindal, adding, "I want disabled persons to meet and chat and marry though my website." [AI] Job norms for physically challenged in Karnataka to be reviewed
Job norms for physically challenged to be reviewed Apr 8, 2007 The present selection norms are unscientific: Minister MANGALORE: Minister for Women and Child Welfare H.K. Kumaraswamy has said that he will review at the earliest norms for selection of physically challenged persons for jobs. He was talking to presspersons on the sidelines of a function here on Sunday. Mr. Kumaraswamy expressed displeasure over the tardy progress in selecting physically challenged persons in group A and group B catgories. Although the Government had set aside three and five percent of the posts in group A and B cadres respectively for physically challenged, the total recruitment in this category was less than 0.5 percent. The officials had not shown interest in ensuring that these persons got their due, he said. He termed the present selection norms as "unscientific." Mr. Kumaraswamy said that in the present "horizontal" reservation system, physically challenged persons were finding it difficult to make it to the cut- off list. Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the Government had introduced a programme to provide computer training to physically challenged persons in 20 districts. It would be extended to Dakshina Kannada Regards, Vishal Jain Ph : 080-41140564 Website : http://vishal.hello.googlepages.com To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] PC made in Chennai may be the most economical one
the next billion" "It is practical, affordable computing" Offers close to 2 GB of space CHEAPER CHIP: A student along with her father using a low-cost computer. A server kept at the service providers' storage place will meet user requirements. CHENNAI: G. Mani is a Southern Railway employee and resident of Parkavi Apartments in K.K. Nagar in Chennai. Like millions of others in the country, he requires a personal computer for basic Internet connectivity and simple tasks. Six months ago, he was still deciding whether to invest Rs.30, 000 in a branded PC or shell out Rs.20, 000 for an assembled PC. Both estimates would have taken a large chunk of his middle-class budget. Then luck smiled on him. Novatium, a Chennai-based company that was developing a Net PC, identified the South Chennai locality to run a pilot test of its low-cost PC. Mr. Mani's house is now one of 140 homes in Chennai where `Nova Net PC' offers Internet connectivity and computing solutions at affordable rates. The Net PC primarily scores with its costing. The Net PC package - consisting of the CPU, a 14-inch CRT monitor, a keyboard and a mouse - has been tentatively priced at Rs.4, 450 (roughly $100). When Net PC hits the market at this price, it could well be the most economical home PC ever. However, Novatium is positioning the device beyond the cost advantage. It is talking about the PC as a home appliance that would offer a no-frills attached comfort of use. So, what makes it comfortable? For starters, the first generation Nova Net PC is stripped off most hardware that could give rise to complications. The CPU consists of a motherboard, an Ethernet connectivity port to connect to the VLAN, 4 USB ports and a serial port for the monitor. Two of the 4 USB ports are used for the keyboard and mouse. Storage, therefore, will exist remotely on a server managed by Novatium. Each user gets close to 2 GB of space. Alok Singh, CEO, Novatium Solutions explains: "Nova NetPC is just practical, affordable computing. The reason why conventional computer systems cannot meet your requirements and often your budget is because they are simply office-use computers. Home computing needs are different." [AI] Put social responsibility before tax concessions:
Put social responsibility before tax concessions: Chidambaram Mar 8, 2007 Take care of those who have no access to basic amenities, industry urged No response from industry on jobs for disabled Corporate honchos have not come forward to upgrade ITIs NEW DELHI: Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday chided captains of industry for doing precious little by way of social responsibility while seeking relief and tax concessions for themselves. Putting the ball in the court of India Inc. during his post-budget interaction with members of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India here, he said: "When we are promising 1,00,000 jobs to the physically challenged... it's a challenge not only for the Government but also for you. I did not hear any one of you speak about how you will provide jobs to physically challenged persons." While presenting the budget, Mr Chidambaram promised corporates that the Government would reimburse the employers' contribution to the EPF (Employees Provident Fund) and the ESI (Employees State Insurance) for the first three years if they provided jobs to the physically handicapped. The Minister rapped the corporate honchos for not coming forward to upgrade industrial training institutes (ITIs) despite the budgetary promise of interest-free loans for their modernisation. "When I offer 1,396 ITIs [for upgrading] and I promised Rs 2.50 crore [as interest-free loan] per ITI, I did not hear any one of you say this is [a] challenge for industry and we will come forward and take over it." Mr. Chidambaram asked the corporate sector to appoint CEOs and CFOs to take better care of its social responsibility to the vulnerable sections, and to avoid seeking fiscal concessions to help achieve inclusive growth. India Inc. needed to take care of that half of India which had no access to water, community toilets, sanitation, electricity, education and health, instead of insisting on repeated tax concessions. On inflation, he said it was a larger social issue and price rise would be moderated in the long run through increased supply of farm goods. "While fiscal steps will have some immediate impact, monetary side will take some time to transmit into the system. Supply-side is indeed a durable answer to inflation. More wheat, more rice, more sugar, more pulses, more oilseeds is [the] durable side." Just as increased supply of inputs was the durable answer to the growth of industry, higher supplies of these were the durable answer to agriculture. Explaining the rationale behind the shift in the budget focus to the farm sector during 2007-08, he said that just as in his "dream" budget of 1997-98 it was necessary to pull India Inc. out of its cocoon, now the stress on the rural sector was essential for "inclusive" growth. Issues such as fringe benefit tax, service tax, double taxation on cement and dividend distribution tax could be addressed through a composite dialogue between his Ministry officials and industry representatives. But the challenge before the Government and the corporates was to make rural India share the gains of current growth, which for the next couple of years would be nine per cent or more. [AI] Campaign for inclusive education launched
Campaign for inclusive education launched Mar 3, 2007 Campaign for inclusive education launched NOVEL INITIATIVE: Participants at the `Chrysallis Power of One', a campaign to bring together children with and without disabilities, in Bangalore on Saturday. - Photo: K. Murali Kumar BANGALORE: Chrysallis Performance Arts Centre on Saturday launched a nationwide campaign favouring inclusive education by bringing together children with and without disabilities. The campaign started with placard-making. During this activity called "Know your special friend" the normal and the disabled children were made to communicate and understand each other and come out with an image on the themes - peer acceptance, social interaction, caring and sharing, and integration. On Saturday, around 230 students, including those from special schools, participated in the activity on the Mount Carmel college premises. The children shared with one another their experiences, including the ways they played their favourite games such as cricket and chess. The result of their interaction was paintings such as lush green tree with two birds perched on it, a bunch of flowers in a colourful vase, and a stream meandering across hillocks and coconut groves. Diana Tholoor, founder of Chrysallis, said this activity was part of a campaign favouring interaction and integration of normal and disabled people, especially in the field of education. "We are making people aware that the disabled people, excluding the mentally disabled, are intellectually capable. There is a need for inclusive education," she said. The placard-making activity was the first phase of the campaign which will be held across 33 States and Union Territories till June 3. Apart from Bangalore, the activity will be held in Puducherry, followed by Chennai and Hyderabad. [AI] Helping visually challenged to become artists
Helping visually challenged to become artists Jan 22, 2007 Exhibition of paintings by visually challenged students attracts many SPECIAL ARTISTS: Visually challenged girls at a workshop in Mysore on Monday. - Photo: M.A. SRIRAM MYSORE: An exhibition of colour paintings by visually challenged students, which was inaugurated at Suchitra Gallery of Kalamandira here on Sunday, is attracting a large number of people. Connoisseurs of art have not only appreciated the talent of the students but also their determination to make a foray into a different field. The students made use of "pop-up symbolism," a new technique of drawing conceived by Mustafa Khan for visually challenged persons. Mr. Khan, a recipient of the Bimal Roy Award, developed the technique after struggling with the medium for nearly four years. He says those who are born visually challenged can now learn drawing and painting through a new method comprising symbols, based on the feel, touch and expression. Visually challenged persons are taught using two-dimensional embossed symbols depicting objects, which can easily be felt. The features of the Braille system have been successfully incorporated for making the framework. Mr. Khan also came up with a new crayon holder for the purpose, where colours are selected by touching the embossed symbols on the holder. The picture can be composed by arranging the mental image of the object together with the choice of colours by touching the symbols. When Nagamani, Mahadevi, Kavitha, Sushma, Rachana, 10th standard students at CSI Victoria Girls' School, drew pictures using crayons at a workshop held on Monday, people assembled were surprised and appreciated the efforts of Mr. Khan. Artist and research scholar C.S. Priya Selvakumar, who released a book on the occasion, appealed to the people to help visually challenged persons to lead a better life. Re: [AI] Problem with Excel
Hello Pranav Lal sir, I am using Office XP and I am talking about a normal Excel sheet. As per my experience JAWS first reads the contents of the cell and then the cell reference. I am able to solve this problem by changing the screen echo to nun as suggested by Hari sir,but I am able to work on other computers without changing the Screen echo to nun. The other thing is I want JAWS to read the contents of a cell without actually moving the curser to that cell is to increase my speed in solving problems. the question is written in a cell and I need to post the entries in some other cell, it becomes a very tedious job to go to the question and come back to post them every time, instead if I can read the question without going to the cell, I can do the work much faster. Please let me know if there is any solution for this. Thank you. [AI] Problem with Excel
Hello members, First of all I wish you a very happy new year. I am facing a problem with Excel. The JAWS doesn't announce the cell reference properly. Say, if I am moving my curser from A3 to A4, first it announces the cell number that is 4, then the contents and finally the cell reference or if I move the curser from A3 to B3, it will say as B, then cell reference and finally B3, because of this problem, I Often get confused between the actual number and the cell reference. Please send me if you have any solution for this problem. I would also like to know whether there is any method where I can make JAWS to speak the contents of a cell without actually moving the curser to that particular cell. I am using Office XP with JAWS 7.0. Thanks in advance Waiting for your reply. [AI] first Hindi Internet Browser 'I-Browser + +
Software engineer from MP enters Limca Book of Records Vidisha Mp | November 12, 2006 9:44:20 PM IST A Ganjabsauda town-based software engineer, Jagdish Dangi, has entered the Limca Book of Records, for developing first Hindi Internet Browser 'I-Browser + +'. Mr Dangi told UNI that he had developed the browser in May at his home as a part of his pet project ''Bhasha Setu'' after completing graduation from Vidisha Engineering College in 2001. The Limca Book of Records recognised his achievement after it received a formal entry in this regard. Mr Dangi received a letter from the Limca Books of Records yesterday. The software is completely in Hindi with Devanagari as its script. His project has been lauded nationally as well as internationally. Born in a rural agricultural family, Mr Dangi said he had also developed 'Shabdakosh' -- Dictionary cum thesaurus (English to Hindi and vice-versa) -- and 'Anuvaadak' -- Global Word Translator (English to Hindi) -- as a part of his project. At present, he was working on 'Saral Editor' software aimed at easier translation from one language to other. Mr Dangi said he was a bit disheartened, as the Centre did not attach much importance to his work. He had discussed about his project with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and received positive response. His work was also praised by government officials. [AI] One more Achievement
Hello friends below is a one more achiever, a software engineer by profession. His software may help the Hindi speaking people. We may use it in combination with SAFA As we don't have any Hindi OCR. Here is his introduction. Jagdeep Dangi I am a Software Engineer from a small town of Madhya Pradesh called Ganj Basoda. I have developed some unique and very useful software in our national language. I have demonstrated my software at various places like IIT Madras, C-dac Noida, C-dac New Delhi, IIITM Gwalior, MANIT Bhopal, SATI Vidisha and even Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India. They have all hugely appreciated all my software and considered them a boon for our masses, specially the rural people. My software are presently in Hindi Language but they can be translated into any other language in very short span of time. These software provide very strong translation and language support tools so the user does not face language block when he uses the computer or the internet. These software are primarily for Hindi speaking people, however, these software can be developed into any other Language in real time. These software are very useful for the public at large specially the Hindi speaking people. These Software are much more advanced than some very popular software existing in the Market. The most important and unique feature in these software is that it kills the Language barrier, it can run independently without any hindrance from the interface. The existing software only changes the interface but when working on the internet which uses different language the problem comes back. the click to Hindi feature kills this problem and let the user to browse or operate the software in Hindi language without any obstacle from language used on the web-sites of the internet. I was invited by the union Ministry of Information Technology to demonstrate my work in front of the experts, developers and scientist of the ministry last year. I have shown them my work and they all have appreciated my work a lot. In furtherance of the appreciation the Ministry offered me to put the demo version of my software on TDILs website, which is a website run by the MIT for language development. I considering my social responsibility to serve the people of our country accepted this offer and gave the evaluation version of my software to the Government. By doing the same I have received huge response from the users of the software, they all liked it very much and requested me to add some more advanced features in my work. So , for the last one year I was busy in updating my software to make it the most advanced and user friendly software package which can be used by everyone in our country. I have now reached a state where my work is most advanced than many other software present in the market. I intended that through my work the rural people of our country must also be benefited from the Digital Revolution in the world in which India is playing the leading role. These Software are also immensly appreciated by the Media (BBC news, Star News, Sahara Samay news, Doordarshan news, E-tv news, Many leading newspapers like The Hindu, The Statesman, The Hindustantimes, The pioneer, Computer Expresss, Dainik Bhaskar, Dainik Jagran, Naidunia, Lokmat, panchjanya etc., Many Mgazines like Digit Dec-04, BizIndia (From USA nov/dec-04), i.t. Oct-05, Benifit Nov-04, Electroniki Aapke Liye Apr-04, CSI Communications Nov-05, The CTO Forum also appreciated my work a lot. Also, the Users, Acadmitians, Software Experts, Scientists, Engineers, Developers etc considered my work as a breakthrough in regional language software development. I have also received many awards for my work. These software are a great boon in the field of localization. [AI] blind man climbed Mount Everest
*Good article by Paulo Coelho, the present generation greatest writer* Little by little we seem to grow used to the same metaphors for life. Some time ago I wrote in the blog column in the "Manual for climbing mountains", and out of the blue I meet a reader in Hamburg who decides to share his experience with me about climbing in life. He discovered what hotel I am in, and has some criticism to make of my page in the Internet. After making some harsh comments, he asks: "Can a blind man climb Mount Everest?" "I don't think so," I answer. "Why don't you answer 'perhaps'?" I am almost certain that I am in the company of a "compulsive optimist." One thing is the whole universe conspiring for our dreams to become true, quite another is to place yourself in front of absolutely unnecessary challenges, which can lead to death or unpredictable failure. I explain that I have to leave for an appointment, but the reader does not give up. "The blind can climb Everest, the highest mountain in the world (8,848 meters). Not only can they do it, but I happen to know of at least one blind person who did it. His name is Erik Weihenmayer. Can your appointment wait?" Since he gave me a name, there could an interesting story here. My appointment can wait, of course. "In 2001, Weihenmayer managed the feat. Meanwhile, people complain that they cannot afford a better car, more elegant clothes, and a salary that matches their abilities." "Are you sure?" "Look it up in the Internet. But what fascinates me is that Weihenmayer knew exactly what he wanted: he changed his life into what he thought it should be. He had the courage to risk everything to have the universe conspire in his favor." I agree. The reader goes on, as if my attitude is no longer of any interest to him: "If you know what you want in life, then you have all you need to manage to make your dream come true. Didn't you yourself say that?" Of course. But there are limits, such as blind people climbing the highest mountain on earth. "And if people have no dreams, what are they supposed to do?" "Think about something that they would like to be doing, and then take the first step," I answer. "Without being afraid of making a mistake. Without fear of offending those who 'worry' about their behavior." "That's it!" said the reader, for the first time identifying my ideas clearly. "So we realize that to reach what we want we have to run risks. Don't you say that in your books?" Not only do I say it, but I also try to keep my word. But we are interrupted in our conversation; it is time for the appointment that has brought me to Hamburg. I thank him for his attention, ask him to send me suggestions for my page on the Internet, we then say goodbye. At three o'clock in the morning, returning from that event, I reach into my pocket for the key to my room and discover the piece of paper where he had jotted down the blind man's name. Even knowing that I have to travel to Cairo in a couple of hours, I turn on the computer, and there it is: "On 25 May 2001, at the age of 32, Erik Weihenmayer became the first blind person to reach the top of the highest mountain in the world. A former high-school teacher, he received the ESPN and IDEA prize for his courage in overcoming the limits that his physical condition permitted. Besides Everest, Erik Weihenmayer has climbed the other seven highest mountains in the world, including Aconcagua in Argentina and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania". If you don't believe it, look it up. -- Here are some interesting links: http://www.touchthetop.com/press/index.htm Regards, Vishal Jain Ph : 080-41140564 Website : http://vishal.hello.googlepages.com To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] First blind women Chartard Accountant
Hello everybody, You will be amazed by looking at the achievement of one of our group member Rajani Gopal who is the first women Chartered Accountant. WOMEN IN ACCOUNTANCY Failures are footsteps to success, says a woman who beat blindness to become a CA A visually impaired CA. G Rajani is one of those rare courageous women who have defied all odds to pursue the CA Course and ultimately succeeded in becoming a professional. Employed in a good position, she shares with the CA fraternity and all those aspiring to become professionals the challenges she faced in coming up in life. I developed Steven Johnson Syndrome due to medical negligence at the age of 9. As the deterioration of vision was gradual, I was able to complete my graduation, articleship training and Intermediate CA with limited vision. After I lost my vision in 1994, I had to look for an alternative mode of studying to pursue the course. Coupled with my father's sickness, I had to fight a battle CA. G. Rajani vision. Similarly it was all the more difficult to get volunteers for reading or scanning after I ultimately lost my vision. But I was lucky enough to get in touch with few likeminded people who volunteered to provide assistance despite their busy schedules. When I cleared the final examination, I was overjoyed and overtaken by a great sense of fulfilment. All my struggles and efforts had been suitably on physical, emotional and mental fronts. I started practising Sahaja Yoga meditation, which gave the confidence and overall balance to come out of the trauma. My urge to pursue the course became stronger, once I learnt to work on computers using screen reading software. The Institute was kind enough to provide the study materials in soft copy. For subjects like tax, I scanned the texts to convert the same to soft copy. For subjects like costing, I had to take the assistance of volunteers. I took up the Final examination and cleared it in November 2002, by availing of the scribe facility. The Institute also granted me extra time as per Regulations, which helped me a lot. Of course I did come across lots of difficulties in pursuing education. I was not able to study continuously due to pain and itching in the eyes, outflow of tears and fast deterioration in rewarded. The next struggle was to get into a career in tune with my qualification. It took me almost 33 months after clearing the final examination to get the necessary breakthrough. Thanks to the placement cell of the Institute, because of which I was able to get the breakthrough. I wish to share few facts with the readers. Due to development in technology, support of volunteers and broader outlook from educational institutions, I feel that physical challenge is no more a handicap to pursue our studies. There are many areas in the field of accountancy, which to a large extent can be handled by the visually challenged, with the help of computers. Thanks are also due to employers who take the bold step of providing an opportunity for people like us. I feel that since there is no concession whatsoever in the examination pattern, it gives Note: Members/ Readers are invited to contribute write- ups and relevant and interesting piece of information for this feature. Women members are welcome to share their experiences, achievements, or thoughts through this column. 252 The Chartered Accountant August 2006 WOMEN IN ACCOUNTANCY a great sense of fulfilment to qualify as a CA just like a normal person. I would highly appreciate if the Institute provides materials in soft copy, especially for subjects like tax, since it requires a lot of time to scan the materials. It would also be great if members or aspiring professionals like us can get the updates on the latest developments in soft copy or in recorded audio form. Since the avenue is now open, I am sure many visually challenged will take up this prestigious course in future. I hope that the Institute will assist these students not only in their studies but also in their career. I have noticed that it is very difficult to market our candidature at the individual level, but at the Institute level it can be done pretty easily. The institute could encourage its members not only to volunteer in helping people who have to put in a struggle like me but also help in meeting prospective employees and getting them placed. The outreach of the Institute being what it is, this could be easily incorporated. There were a lot of hurdles and failures both in my education and career. But I was persistent. With some support I found avenues opening up for me. Failures become footsteps to success when there is perseverance, commitment, determination, sincerity of purpose and accepting the situation we are put into. Pity? Does it help them in anyway? Definitely not. Its only when you help them locate whatever they need are you really expressing your true feeling of concern. According to research, a human being learns 83% through sight, 11% through hearing, 3 ½% through smell, 1 ½% through touch and 1% through taste. A glance at the above statistics can tell you what the visually challenged people lose. How do they study? For their studies or at work, the visually challenged use computers extensively. So how do they use the computers when they cant see the screen? They use a simple screen reading software like JAWS (Job Access with Speech). This software reads out everything displayed on the monitor. Instead of the mouse, they use keyboard commands. This software enables them to work with almost all windows based applications. In a similar fashion, the printed books are scanned, edited and converted to a word document. Then they can be read like any other document by JAWS. Editing plays an important role here as the recognition of some text may not be 100% accurate. Handwritten notes, however has to be typed. Books in languages other than English are recorded on cassettes or CDs. These are all the evolved methods of learning for the visually challenged. But Braille (a script that requires punching paper to read the dots created) is also extensively used. How do the visually challenged students give their examinations? Examinations are generally given with the help of a scribe. A scribe is a person who reads the questions and writes the answers dictated to him by the student. The qualification of a scribe must be lower than that of the student or else he should be of a separate stream. There are several communication problems encountered by the scribe and the student, especially at the time of calculations, diagrams, spellings etc. Achievements of the visually challenged: A lay man would often dismiss the thought of a visually challenged person having a prestigious degree or a high level of qualification. It's quite incredible that many blind people are into most walks of life such as Martial Arts, Mechanics where vision generally plays a prominent role. They have also accomplished several degrees like CA, MBBS, MBA, PhD, IAS and computer engineering to name a few. Job oriented people are certainly not behind. They work in several companies like Infosys, IBM, GE, SBI, Canara Bank, Microsoft, Google etc. they work in various sectors such as software engineers, Research analysts, Human resource recruiters, Doctors, Lecturers, Journalists, Advocates, Front office executives. Do you have any uncertainties in communicating with a visually challenged person? Firstly, no matter how shy you may be, you mustn't wait for the visually challenged to make the first move. Identifying yourself will prove to be very helpful as they have the knack of recognizing your voice if you talk to them for a while. For example: you could say "hi! This is Vinay" thereafter they will know your voice and recognize you later. One important thing to be noted is that you must always let them know when you enter or leave their room. If you see someone else entering, then you can always take the initiative and announce their name. The visually challenged are quite self sufficient in mobility. But it always helps if you describe the surrounding things clearly. You can also read points written on signboards and trace diagrams on their hands. Talk directly to the visually challenged person. (Not the person who is with the visually challenged)! They are quite intelligent, have good hearing and speaking skills. They just can't see very well! Often people talk to the person the Visually Challenged is with, rather than to the person directly! They do not need an interpreter! He or she is quite capable of communicating directly with others. Allow them to be independent and self-sufficient. Don't ignore them! Many people see a visually challenged person needing assistance but they choose to ignore them. Mostly because they don't know what to do. There are two principle rules to follow: 1) Use simple courtesy. Instead of viewing them as someone different, just treat them as you would anybody else. You could ask them if they need anything. 2) Always remember that they are not 'deaf' or 'retarded'. Yet many people communicate with them as if they are! They are just like you. The only difference being that they can't see very well. Vision

[AI] Very useful cellphone numbers
There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it: - EMERGENCY I The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out. II Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car? Does you car have remote keys? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone ontheir end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!" III Subject: Hidden Battery power Imagine your cell battery is very low, you are expecting an important call and you don't have a charger. Nokia instrument comes with a reserve battery. To activate, press the keys 3370# Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time. AND IV How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone? To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. when your phone ge ts stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones. Re: [AI] projection of blind by media
13 year old Divakar, studying in DPS RK Puram is a very good singer. There is a 9 year girl called Sonal Rathuri who is an another example for it. Yes, even I felt that the judges did not wanted to make any comments about his singing. Generally most of the blind singers have a major problem of expressions which is a very important part in singing. If anybody has his contact number, please send it across to me. regards Vishal Jain. - Original Message - From: "Aruni Arsh" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "khurana" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sent: Saturday, July 15, 2006 8:18 PM Subject: Re: [AI] projection of blind by media >I also happened to watch that program and I would like to say that he > was no doubt one of the best singers among the many participents. [AI] He is not blind, he just cant see
AOL People Magazine Friday, July 14, 2006 The Boy Who Sees with Sound By Alex Tresniowski. Ron Arias Blind since age 3, Ben Underwood skateboards, shoots hoops and plays video games. How does he do it? Just like bats and dolphins FRIDAY JULY 14, 2006 06:00AM EST "I'm a normal kid," says Ben, who lost his sight at 3. (above, he inspects his prosthetic eyes.) Photo by: Theo Rigby There was the time a fifth grader thought it would be funny to punch the blind kid and run. So he snuck up on Ben Underwood and hit him in the face. That's when Ben started his clicking thing. "I chased him, clicking until I got to him, then I socked him a good one," says Ben, a skinny 14-year-old. "He didn't reckon on me going after him. But I can hear walls, parked cars, you name it. I'm a master at this game." LINK: See the Video: Watch Ben Underwood use echolocation to connect with dolphins requires Quicktime. URL extracted by Leon Gilbert) SEE IT http://pdl.stream.aol.com/time/gl/people/video/underwood_dl.mov Ask people about Ben Underwood and you'll hear dozens of stories like this - about the amazing boy who doesn't seem to know he's blind. There's Ben zooming around on his skateboard outside his home in Sacramento; there he is playing kickball with his buddies. To see him speed down hallways and make sharp turns around corners is to observe a typical teen - except, that is, for the clicking. Completely blind since the age of 3, after retinal cancer claimed both his eyes (he now wears two prostheses), Ben has learned to perceive and locate objects by making a steady stream of sounds with his tongue, then listening for the echoes as they bounce off the surfaces around him. About as loud as the snapping of fingers, Ben's clicks tell him what's ahead: the echoes they produce can be soft (indicating metals), dense (wood) or sharp (glass). Judging by how loud or faint they are, Ben has learned to gauge distances. The technique is called echolocation, and many species, most notably bats and dolphins, use it to get around. But a 14-year-old boy from Sacramento? While many blind people listen for echoes to some degree, Ben's ability to navigate in his sightless world is, say experts, extraordinary. "His skills are rare," says Dan Kish, a blind psychologist and leading teacher of echomobility among the blind. "Ben pushes the limits of human perception." Kish has taught echolocation to scores of blind people as a supplement to more traditional methods, such as walking with a cane or a guide dog, but only a handful of people in the world use echolocation alone to get around, according to the American Foundation for the Blind. A big part of the reason Ben has succeeded is his mother, who made the decision long ago never to coddle her son. "I always told him, 'Your name is Benjamin Underwood, and you can do anything,' " says Aquanetta Gordon, 42, a utilities-company employee. "He can learn to fly an airplane if he wants to." CAPTION: Ben listens for noises made by a beluga whale at San Diego's SeaWorld Photo by: Theo Rigby Ben plays basketball with his pals, rides horses at camp and dances with girls at school events. He excels at PlayStation games by memorizing the sounds that characters and movements make. "People ask me if I'm lonely," he says. "I'm not, because someone's always around or I've got my cell phone and I'm always talking to friends. Being blind is not that different from not being blind." Ben was just 2 years old when doctors discovered his retinal cancer. Ben's first Braille teacher, Barbara Haase, believes the boy's ability to see during his first two years helped him develop "a sort of map of the physical world," she says. Growing up, Ben got help from his brothers Joe, now 23, and Derius, 19, and sister Tiffany, 18. (His father, Stephen, died in 2002.) "They taught him how to find the seams on his clothes so he puts them on right side out, stuff like that," says Aquanetta. "But they didn't overdo it." Aquanetta sent Ben to mainstream schools, where professionals on staff gave him individual attention and taught him to overlook taunts from classmates who waved their hands in his face or snatched food off his tray. "The hardest thing for me to accept is rejection," says Ben, who starts ninth grade in the fall. "I can tell when someone rejects me in some way." At home his mother let him play with no restrictions. "If he fell, she would just say, 'Oh, he fell,' and he'd get up and try again," says his kindergarten teacher Ann Akiyama. "I've seen him run full speed into the edge of a big brick column and get back up. He was fearless." Ben learned how to read Braille and walk with a cane, but when he was 3, he also began teaching himself echolocation, something he picked up by tossing objects and making clicking sounds to find them. His sense of hearing, teachers noticed, was exceptional. "One time a CD fell off his desk and I was reaching for it when he said, 'Nah, I got it,'"

[AI] Right to Information Act
Right to Information Act We all pay taxes. Even a beggar on the street pays sales tax when he buys anything from the market. This money belongs to us. But where does this money go? Why are there no medicines in the hospitals? Why are people dying of starvation? Why are the roads in such pathetic conditions? Why are the taps dry? Now we have a right to question governments. The Parliament of India has passed Right to Information Laws, which empower citizens to question the government, inspect their files, take copies of government documents and also to inspect government. I think each and every citizen of India should know about RTI Act and use it to eliminate corruption from India. Spare some time and go to the website given below. www.righttoinformation.org Remember, you can make a difference. Regards Vishal Jain. [AI] Implantable Retinas Come Alive
Implantable Retinas Come Alive An advance in triggering individual retinal cells could one day lead to implanted artificial retinas for treating blindness. By Duncan Graham-Rowe Encouraging neurons in the retina to grow dendrites into silicon-based eye implants could help make retinal prosthetics a reality. The dendrites grown in a controlled zigzag pattern (bottom) shown across an array of much larger vertical electrodes (top). (Courtesy of Neville Mehenti, Stanford University.) The use of implanted retina chips to restore vision is still some way off. But scientists have taken a significant step toward that goal by finding a way to trigger the firing of individual retinal cells, by growing them on a silicon-based eye implant. The research represents a key step in making artificial vision considerably better and more natural than current methods used for prosthetic retinas. One of the biggest challenges in developing artificial retinas has been finding a way to stimulate cells in the eye to fire individually rather than en masse. Now, by getting the retinal ganglion nerve cells to grow and plug themselves into a silicon device, it is possible, says Stacey Bent < http://chemeng.stanford.edu/01About_the_Department/03Faculty/Bent/bent.html >, a chemical engineer at Stanford University, whose research appears in the current issue of /Biomedical Microdevices/. There are several different approaches used today in the attempt to develop retinal prosthetics. But the basic principle underlying all of them is the same: by stimulating cells within the retina, vision sensations can be elicited in the visual cortex. This is possible because for some common eye diseases, like retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration, only the light-sensitive photoreceptor cells in the retina are damaged. This means other types of cells in the retina and visual cortex in the brain remain intact and fully functional. Until now, the method of choice for repairing these cells has consisted of using arrays of electrodes placed near the retina to stimulate the cells electrically. The trouble with this technique is that, apart from the electrodes being larger than the cells they're trying to stimulate, there is no way to isolate the electric fields in order to trigger individual neurons without triggering their neighbors. Encouraging the cells to grow tentacle-like dendrites between the cell and an electrode, the strategy used by Bent, gets around this problem by creating a communication channel that stimulates the cell without invading or disrupting the structure of the retina. The real payoff with this method, though, is the ability to make use of the preprocessing of the retina, says Bent. Until now, most research has focused on stimulating the retinal ganglion cells, the large cells that feed signals directly into the optic nerve. But this bypasses all the motion-detection and edge-detection processing carried out in the retina itself by a network of neurons called bipolar cells. The ability to stimulate individual cells opens the door to the possibility of stimulating bipolar cells instead of ganglion cells, says Bent. "We'd be taking advantage of the existing circuitry," she says. Working with Harvey Fishman and other colleagues from Stanford University, Bent prepared a patterned array of electrodes with a neuron growth-promoting protein called laminin, then seeded it with retinal ganglion cells from rats. After 48 hours, tentacle-like growths from the cells were found to have followed the patterns of the laminin. The group then applied signals to these electrodes, to show that the cells could be stimulated at power levels an order of magnitude less than previously required. That's important because in a device it reduces the chance of a signal leaking out and affecting neighboring cells, says Bent. Not everyone is convinced that such controlled and directed growth of bipolar cells will be possible in a live implant, however. While the idea of using dendrite growth is a good way to bridge the gap between electrode and neuron, Peter Fromherz, head of the Department of Membrane and Neurophysics < http://www.biochem.mpg.de/mnphys/index.html> at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Germany, believes the complex patterns needed to keep the electrodes separate would quickly get swamped. Furthermore, there'd be the issue of keeping the cells alive under such conditions, says Eberhart Zrenner < http://www.uak.medizin.uni-tuebingen.de/zrenner/>, director of the Department for Pathophysiology of Vision and Neuro-Ophthalmology at the University Eye Hospital of Tübingen, in Germany. "They need a proper oxygen supply," he says, as well as nutrients. Now Bent's group wants to apply this approach to stimulate cells using chemicals instead of electricity. This would involve using microfluidic channels instead of electrodes to squirt neurotransmitter chemicals at nerves or their dendrites to trigger them. Several research g
