[AI] Accessible voting machine!

2013-12-05 Thread George Abraham
Friends,

I do not think merely providing Braille on the EVMs buttons is the
solution. Most blind voters will not be able to read Braille. The solution
has to be more universal. Providing Braille notings on buttons is a cut and
paste solution. We need to take the matter with the EVM manufacturers or
the EC needs to understand the issue of access and then come up with a
solution.

I would like to take the matter up with the EC post the 8th of December.
Anyone wanting to join me can connect with me off the list.

Regards,

George

Technology is not the only factor here. Yes, we need to explore
possibilities with the technologies the EC uses but alongside there is a
great need to sensitise and train the officers posted at the polling
booths. As far as the technology is concerned, I believe the EC has to be
involved with the process of creating access. All this would require
initial dialogue with the Commission.

Re: [AI] Accessible voting machine!

2013-12-05 Thread Vivekananda Doddamani.
it's true Gorge Sir, until & unless we know the list of candidates and
their serial number then how will we come to know to which number we
have to press the button, on EVM machine if the names are provided
against the buttons it will take long time to read where there will be
more candidates, for example in Timarpur constituance there were 12
candidates we can't waste our time reading near EVM machine the other
people in the line will start shouting, so I request you to write to
Election Commission to provide Braille list of candidates outside the
Poling booth so that we can decide to which number we can press
button.

Hi,

I would love to join in this effort. Ofcourse it requires a lot of
research, and more importantly discussion with authorities. More often than
not it is not an issue of technology but an issue of communication or
co-ordination. I have previously met with Chief Election Officer,
Maharashtra EC though it was regarding a different topic (NRI Voting
Rights) and would love to join this effort too.

Re: [AI] Accessible voting machine!

2013-12-06 Thread Vedprakash
Election commission provides the braille list. But it is the staff on duty
that ignores it. most of the on duty election staff does not understand the
importance of that particular paper and just throws it somewhere.

When some VI demands the same, they have no answer.
there is a need to sensetise the staff on duty. election commission has
taken up most of the measures regarding the VI.

it's true Gorge Sir, until & unless we know the list of candidates and
their serial number then how will we come to know to which number we
have to press the button, on EVM machine if the names are provided
against the buttons it will take long time to read where there will be
more candidates, for example in Timarpur constituance there were 12
candidates we can't waste our time reading near EVM machine the other
people in the line will start shouting, so I request you to write to
Election Commission to provide Braille list of candidates outside the
Poling booth so that we can decide to which number we can press
button.

the EC needs to understand the issue of access and then come up with a

I would like to take the matter up with the EC post the 8th of December.

In election of 2013 when I used my franchise for the first time I
faced the same problem. I've to seek help from one of the staff
member. Brail is no solution. Audio feedback is the real solution. I
guess there should be two steps while using our franchise. Firstly
there should be 2 sets of buttons for every party, first button should
read out the candidate name and his or her party and second button
should be for registering our vote. A problem arises over here audio
feedback may be audible for others and it defeats our right to
maintain our choice secret, for that headphones or EVMs should be
placed in enclose boots like we have for ATM.

Re: [AI] Accessible voting machine!

2013-12-06 Thread George Abraham
Now we are talking! Braille is more often than not seen as the way to
include blind people into various situations. This is like "ramps" being
the panacea for all disability access. The
EC needs to conceptually understand disability and then think of designs.
Our effort should be to sensitise and educate the EC so that the effort is
not merely restricted to the EVMs but also the officers who man the booths.
There would be technology modifications, man power training and polling
booth designs, maybe modifications in the polling booth protocols and so
on. We need to brainstorm involving the EC. They need to rethink process, a
process that is universal.

George,

Ideally, you should have solutions working across multiple modalities. What
does a deafblind person do? You need tactile which you already have and if
necessary audio but I don't see how audio will work since as far as I know,
electronic voting machines are standard products. They are not easy to
customize since the makers have to be very very careful before changing
anything.
