[ActiveDir] Beginner's Book on Scripting - WSH or VBScript?
Hello everyone. After reading through a lot of the posts on this mailing list, I realize I could make my job easier if I knew how to script. I have no experience in scripting, but would like to know what books do you recommend as a beginner's book on scripting? Also, I don't really know the difference between WSH and _vbscript_, so if anyone could explain that, I'd appreciate that. After browsing through Amazon, I saw several books on WSH and _vbscript_, but don't know where I should focus on. I'm also open to computer based training (CBT) videos of any exist. Thanks in advance.

RE: [ActiveDir] [OT] Perc 5i and WinPE
Title: [OT] Perc 5i and WinPE Thanks Freddy. We had the drivers and were looking for the steps needed to use these drivers with WinPE. We've now figured it out and for the benefit of the archive, here are the steps we used: For the DELL SAS PERC RAID this should do the trick:- Get the following driver http://ftp.us.dell.com/SAS-RAID/R120960.EXE Extract all the files and then copy the complete set into PE_Img\i386\system32\Perc51 Update PE_Img\i386\system32\WinPEoem.sif as follows:- [OemDriverParams]OemDriverRoot=""OemDriverDirs=Perc51 NOTE Your WinPE disk MUST be made from Windows 2003 SP1 or R2 sources otherwise the above WON'T work!! Then use OSCDimg.exe to create the CD... BTW you might also fall foul of getting networking going on this, due to the NetXtreme II using a Virtual Bus Device (VBD). If you use the -minint switch on your PE dist then WinPE removes support for VBD devices and you have to use the Broadcom monolithic driver b06nd51x.sys instead of b06nd51.sys. _vbscript_ is one of the available providers for WSH which is a scripting framework. JScript and _vbscript_ are the two languages support out of the box by WSH but Perl and other scripting languages can plug into the framework. My number one resource for _vbscript_ is the Script Center www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/default.mspx. RE: [ActiveDir] Beginner's Book on Scripting - WSH or VBScript?
Lets swap these round. Windows Scripting Host is an environment in which scripts can run. Windows Scripting host provides services that scripts written in a variety of languages can access.Microsoft provides_vbscript_ andJScript. I seem to recall seeing that REXX was available for download. _vbscript_ is a language that can run in in a variety of environments including IE client side, IE Server side as well as WSH. Note there is also WMI (Windows Management Interface) which allows you to control management stuff from WSH scripts. With XP/2003 and laterthere also many non-script command line tools which can be used in traditional batch files, e.g. NETSH , NETDOM, DSQUERY/DSMOVE/... etc. If you are going to use WSH to do administrative tasks and you like a tutorial approach then I really like Alain lissoir's books which you can buy, or you can download the exciting bits from:- http://users.skynet.be/alain.lissoir/default.html Hope this is not too much information overload, Dave Wade From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Stu PackettSent: 09 November 2006 15:00To: ActiveDir@mail.activedir.orgSubject: [ActiveDir] Beginner's Book on Scripting - WSH or _vbscript_? WSH hosts _vbscript_s, JScripts, other scripting languages. You can do some other stuff with it to package scripts and what have you, but, by and large you just want to pickup _vbscript_. The 2nd Edition of the Active Directory Cookbook has a ton of examples that you can likely benefit from as well. [ActiveDir]event log monitoring.
Hi, I want to implement a system that will send me an email whenever there is an error in any of the event logs in my servers. I could do this with an script or similar, butI don't have the time to do it that way and many other reasons. I was wondering if any of you has used GFI EventsManager, my main concern is to know if monitoring the events will put to much work on the servers that I am monitoring, I don't want to crash my server because I am monitoring it. If you need to save money (i.e. don't want to pay for MOM, HPOV, AppIQ, etc) - you can use MonitorMagic, http://www.tools4ever.com/products/monitormagic/. It has a tiny agent that sits on a server...we had it loaded on our Domain Controllers for years - it was granular enough to email SAs whenever a computer was added to the domain, for example. Never had any problems with it, though we don't run it any more... RE: [ActiveDir] Beginner's Book on Scripting - WSH or VBScript?
If you want to learn WSH scripting end to end, the resources provided are all excellent. Lots of info out there, not necessarily any of it is comprehensive as someone always leaves something out but good nonetheless. If you want to learn based on doing things and expand out from there look at the "Cookbooks" that have been published by O'Reilly. For AD stuff, you want the Active Directory Cookbook 2E. For Exchange you want the Exchange Cookbook (though there is some of the common AD related tasks in the AD Cookbook). For general Server type items check out the Windows Server Cookbook. If you want Windows Server security related items you want the Windows Server 2003 Security Cookbook. The nice thing about these books is that they are task oriented which tend to fit people's jobs better and are usually, IMO, easier for people to learn from because they are doing something they care about, not outputting "how now brown cow" or "hello world". Once you start seeing how things are done, it can help understand the more abstract teachings in the "all about _vbscript_ing" type sources. There are also lots of scripts available in the Technet Script Center but the organization of that whole thing last time I checked about drove me insane. I knew what I wanted and half the time couldn't find it... As Darren mentioned, you may want to consider looking at PowerShell. It is the new and improved Windows Scripting environment, for that there is a book called Monad (also by O'Reilly) that isn't too bad and does a nice walkthrough to build you up though like any book that is trying to teach scripting or programming may be considered a little dry. As others mentioned, WSH is sort of a frameworkthat provides common interfaces, etc and allows multiple script engines to be used such as perlscript, _vbscript_, REXX, jscript, Python, etc. You can also use standalone perl which if you intend to do anything cross/platform you may want to consider plus IMO, it blows _vbscript_ out of the water. Especially if you need to call out to command line tools or parse any kind of string stuff. I have written a considerable amount of _vbscript_, primarily for ASP web sites and small utility scripts and I can't say that I ever liked it, it is silly that it misses basic things like sort, etc. I much preferred my work with REXX and later my work with perl which I still primarily use now. My preferences when putting something together is perl and if I can't do something in perl then c/c++. If I can't use perl then I will use _vbscript_ or jscript. joe -- O'Reilly Active Directory Third Edition - http://www.joeware.net/win/ad3e.htm From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Stu PackettSent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 10:00 AMTo: ActiveDir@mail.activedir.orgSubject: [ActiveDir] Beginner's Book on Scripting - WSH or _vbscript_? I didn't honestly see anything in the risk factors of the 10Q that any other software business doesn't declare. I read it as basically saying that Microsoft has competition from various sources that could threaten its business model. That's pretty normal. I think its fair to say, based on the big dividend disbursement they did, I want to say last year, that they have plenty of spare cash. I can see it as being a big dilemma, actually. Typically software companies use their cash, among other things, to do acquisitions. But MS' precarious legal position around the world, I can imagine, makes it really hard to do acquisitions that won't receive endless scrutiny. Not that I'm feeling that sorry for them, but, from the perspective of trying to run and grow the business, I imagine that would frustrate more than one person in Redmond. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Susan Bradley, CPA aka Ebitz - SBS Rocks [MVP] Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 1:19 PM To: ActiveDir@mail.activedir.org Subject: Re: [ActiveDir] OT: M$ Keep reading down to the risk factors.. :-) Merry, Joel (US - Philadelphia) wrote: Hey Susan, not quite sure what report you were looking at, but their FY06 10-K shows a net income of $12.6B with EPS of $1.21 and cash dividends of $0.35/common share ... it also shows a positive cash flow of $6.7B ... RE: [ActiveDir] Beginner's Book on Scripting - WSH or VBScript?
I similarly got to a point where I realized I couldnt practically avoid scripting any longer. I looked at a few books, including Robbies AD Cookbook. Eventually I have become a pretty fair scripter in _vbscript_ and can work my way around jscript with only minimal pain. Here are a couple of things I learned, though. 1) _vbscript_ is nice because from Win2K and up, its supported out of the box in WSH. No interpreter to load, and no compiling necessary. It does have its limitations, to be sure, but it is fairly easy to learn. An advantage over compiling a perl script is if you are out in the field with a script you need, and it doesnt work on the box you need it for, you can open it up in notepad and fix it. This happens (for me anyway) more than you might imagine. 2) I cant remember all the stuff like Set oFSO = CreateObject(Scripting.FileSystemObject) and so on, or the set of lines to write to text files, etc. So like any good web programmer, I have accumulated a folder of example scripts that do certain things. i.e. parse a csv file, write a log file, find various AD attributes, manipulate msi databases, etc. If I dont have a set of code to do something, I can easily find it out there on the web and adapt it. Almost everything Ive written started out as something else including plagiarizing my own scripts. 3) The Windows Platform Software Development Kit is invaluable. There is a scripting reference to all the methods, functions, etc and when I am charting new territory, I have it open all the time. All the ADSI methods, objects, functions, and properties are in there too. The SDK is freely downloadable from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/XPSP2FULLInstall.htm 4) The Microsoft Scripting Guys have lots of cool stuff on their site. The WMI Scriptomatic 2 is awesome for showing how to do things. Even if you are not doing WMI but rather AD, it shows you how to create and use objects and query properties. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/default.mspx 5) If you dont have a good tool for scripting, get one. There are several, and I think that the free Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Express will do _vbscript_. I know it does hta files. Autocomplete is another invaluable tool once you learn to use it, for all but the most prolific scripters (like joe I imagine J) 6) Consider looking at HTA (HTML Application) files. They are HTML, so familiar if you know any web coding, but they dont have the limitations IE puts on htm files i.e. you can access the file system etc. They enable you to harness a web interface to use in your scripts. A lot of recent Microsoft stuff is on HTA now. --- Rich Milburn MCSE, Microsoft MVP - Directory Services Sr Network Analyst, Field Platform Development Applebee's International, Inc. 4551 W. 107th St Overland Park, KS 66207 913-967-2819 -- I love the smell of red herrings in the morning - anonymous From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Stu Packett Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 9:00 AM To: ActiveDir@mail.activedir.org Subject: [ActiveDir] Beginner's Book on Scripting - WSH or _vbscript_? RE: [ActiveDir] OT: M$
;o) Always the shit kicker Laura. :) Me... M$ doesn't bother me and I do have a relatively positive view on MSFT (Even Exchange on days that I don't have todeal with it). Not because they are involved with my paycheck in some fashion, if I weren't working on their stuff I would be working on someone else's stuff and still making money. Maybe more, maybe less, can't really tell. If I had to guess, I would probably be paid more and I would be a high end UNIX or application guy and not having to listen to admins tell me how great they are or how amazing they were in their last job while screwing things up in their current job. Then again, I could be pearl diving too, I am pretty good at it, I made a "living" doing it for years and always have it to fall back on. Hopefully the next time I do that though it will be in an eatery that I own. :o) What I *do think* about this though is that it makes the person who uses it look kind of bad or possibly less intelligent. I try not to look at them bad but I seem to inadvertently toss them into a category I reserve for script kiddies and two bit hackers and OS Bigots (of any religion) and others who consider themselves "L33T" or otherwise too cool for school. Folks that use alternate spelling choices for words are doing their darndest to get me to ignore them because it is a PITA to read something that has all the purposeful misspellings in it. There is too much well written stuff out there to waste your time trying to decode something written so poorly. I think some people do it simply because MSFT is on top and a lot of less skilled and/or less capable people like to make themselves look better or important by trying to knock down or otherwise ridicule thosewho have a higher perceived standing than themselves. I think overall Microsoft has done more for commoditizing the PC industry and standardizing things in it than any other company or group in the world. Without them, I think we would still be in a world of very costly business machines and almost nothing reasonable available for the home. While they may not do things the best, they actually get things out there. Oh yeah, I think as a whole, most MSFT employees are severely underpaid for what they do for Microsoft and the community as a whole. To even it out though, like in any company, there are people in (or were in) MSFT that are/were lucky to even have a job. While I tend to hear a lot of nasty things about MSFT as a company, hearing nasty things about individual employees is not so common. I don't think the company is evil. Much of the time I think that them trying to be purposely evil would be a stretch and tough for their overall method of management and internal communication and something they would have to spend considerable time trying to work at sort of like security... ;o) I think of MSFT mostly as an oversized puppy that tends to accidently step on toes and accidently bite too hard when playing. So anyway, not that I am looking for an apology or think that the guy owes anyone one. I would just give a recommendation to avoidlanguage/spelling like thateven if others are doing it as it is certain to get at least some people to start ignoring them at a minimum. joe -- O'Reilly Active Directory Third Edition - http://www.joeware.net/win/ad3e.htm From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Laura A. RE: [ActiveDir] Exchange --NDR--
Without an reverse PTR to your MX your likely to have this problem with a number of folks. You can try sending me a private message as well. My server will not except traffic without a reverse record. Though it should be child's play for the ISP to configure - usually just one entry, maybe two depending on the version of UNIX BIND they are running. If you use dnsstuff.com's top middle colum spam database lookup, it will indicate what your PTR is or isn't. The CBLs and DBNS may or may not have you listed depending on the amount of email you have sent or if anyone has complained so that too makes sense. I just ran into this problem with someone in the same building. Really, this is pretty simple to fix once everything is in place. Good luck and let know how things turn out. Actually the one you want to watch is SCE (System Center Essentials) built for SMBs in mind... (current beta) In the SBS space I don't see a lot of MOM use it just never caught on. RE: [ActiveDir] mailbox enumeration(OT)
I can think of a couple ways- You can modify the script here to just count: http://briandesmond.com/blog/archive/2006/09/04/Script-to-Dump-Exchange- Mailbox-Info-to-Spreadsheet-_2800_CSV_2900_.aspx You can also query the config partition, specifically cn=microsoft exchange,cn=services, dcn=configuration,dc=blah,dc=blech for whatever the cass is for the mailstores, I think msExchPrivateStore or something similar. Then just iterate each of those and search AD for homeMDB=DnOfThat. The output is simple, just EX severname-SGname-store-#of mailboxes. I can get the size of a mailbox or store but I can't seem to just query for # of mailboxes on a store and dump that to a text file.any example or suggestione would be appreciated. RE: [ActiveDir]event log monitoring.
Take a look at LogCaster from Rippletech. That is what we are using. I don't manageit, but Iheard it works pretty well. Any suggestion? Re: [ActiveDir] Beginner's Book on Scripting - WSH or VBScript?
Thank you everyone for your response. Every reply was very helpful. This mailing list has a very respectful feel as opposed to other lists I subscribe to.I neglected to mention that I'm also interested in scripting because I've been hearing about Powershell in Exchange 2007. I'm an Exchange admin and I'm here at Exchange Connections in Las Vegas and that is one of the big pluses of Exchange 2007. Thanks again everyone and I feel much better moving forward. On 11/9/06, Rich Milburn [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I similarly got to a point where I realized I couldn't practically avoid scripting any longer. I looked at a few books, including Robbie's AD Cookbook. Eventually I have become a pretty fair scripter in _vbscript_ and can work my way around jscript with only minimal pain. Here are a couple of things I learned, though. 1) _vbscript_ is nice because from Win2K and up, it's supported out of the box in WSH. No interpreter to load, and no compiling necessary. It does have it's limitations, to be sure, but it is fairly easy to learn. An advantage over compiling a perl script is if you are out in the field with a script you need, and it doesn't work on the box you need it for, you can open it up in notepad and fix it. This happens (for me anyway) more than you might imagine. 2) I can't remember all the stuff like Set oFSO = CreateObject("Scripting .FileSystemObject") and so on, or the set of lines to write to text files, etc. So like any good web programmer, I have accumulated a folder of example scripts that do certain things. i.e. parse a csv file, write a log file, find various AD attributes, manipulate msi databases, etc. If I don't have a set of code to do something, I can easily find it out there on the web and adapt it. Almost everything I've written started out as something else – including plagiarizing my own scripts. Even if you are not doing WMI but rather AD, it shows you how to create and use objects and query properties. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/default.mspx 5) If you don't have a good tool for scripting, get one. There are several, and I think that the free Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Express will do _vbscript_. I know it does hta files. Autocomplete is another invaluable tool once you learn to use it, for all but the most prolific scripters (like joe I imagine J ) 6) Consider looking at HTA (HTML Application) files. They are HTML, so familiar if you know any web coding, but they don't have the limitations IE puts on htm files – i.e. you can access the file system etc. They enable you to harness a web interface to use in your scripts. A lot of recent Microsoft stuff is on HTA now. --- Rich Milburn MCSE, Microsoft MVP - Directory Services Sr Network Analyst, Field Platform Development Applebee's International, Inc. 4551 W. 107th St Overland Park , KS 66207 913-967-2819 -- "I love the smell of red herrings in the morning" - anonymous From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Stu Packett Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 9:00 AM To: ActiveDir@mail.activedir.org Subject: [ActiveDir] Beginner's Book on Scripting - WSH or _vbscript_? I have no experience in scripting, but would like to know what books do you recommend as a beginner's book on scripting? Also, I don't really know the difference between WSH and _vbscript_, so if anyone could explain that, I'd appreciate that.
