Re: TSM database maximum recommended size

2002-04-03 Thread Sutch, Ian (London)

We have 80gb databases on 4 x IBM NSM's (COO, H50's, SSA disk 1gb Memory
etc)

They take over 4 hours to back up. We recently migrated a TSM database from
one NSM to another and
it took 18 hours to restore...far far too long if faced with disaster
recovery.

Its not an easy probelm to fix.

OK, that's at least two people who are pretty savvy, who couldn't find
this info easily.

Just out of curiosity, where did you try to look? I know the client does
have a man page (which would help on UNIX only anyway)... did you try
using the Admin CLI's online HELP faciltiy (enter HELP from the command
line)? Which books did you check?

The reason I am asking is to see whether there is any common ground for
where you did go to look, and maybe we can address the issue. For example,
if you tried the client books, then maybe it would be helpful if we put a
pointer in the client books to use the Admin CLI's online HELP or to see
the Admin Reference.

2002-04-03 Thread Andrew Raibeck

>> What could a customer do for DR of a client which lost it's encryption key

Start guessing, I suppose. Other than that, they would be out of luck.
Like I said below:

"someone intercepting the TSM server database and storage pool volumes
could not restore the data without the encryption key (unless they can
hack it, but then any encryption scheme is subject to hacking)."

While that was presumably in the context of someone illegitimately trying
to access the data, that isn't really pertinent. No matter who is trying
to access the data, legitimate or now, they won't be able to get the data
without the encryption key. There is nothing we at IBM can do to get the
data back, as we build no "back doors" into the product (if we did, that
would be a potential security issue).

Someone else made a post on this topic and mentioned something about
encryption key management. I am not familiar with the formalities of this
discipline, but it seems to me that if you are going to start encrypting
your TSM data, you should consider implementing policies for managing
encryption keys.

Hi, I was just wondering where you found the information stating that
the
data was only protected on the way to the server, but not on the server.
Encryption is done by the client using an encrytion key that it create
and
since the key is never passed from client to server, there is no way for

the
server to de-crypt the data before storage.

Please let me know, as I would like to look at the documentation.

Re: TSM Server Sizing

2002-04-03 Thread Bill Mansfield

The other factor is storage growth. You probably want your TSM server
architecture to last awhile, and I've seen estimates ranging from 50-300%
storage CAGR (and consistently seen the estimates exceeded).

There are several approaches:
- Buy the biggest, most scalable stuff you can afford, and hope for the
best. This maximizes the upfront cost, but minimizes the downstream cost.
You might get promoted before you run out of capacity.
- Buy what you think you will need for the next little while, and plan to
upgrade. This works better for servers than libraries, and you can
usually find a use for an outgrown server. Also, server price/performance
increases much faster than library price/capacity.
- Plan to grow modularly with lots of TSM servers. Even TSM can't scale a
single server to extremely large environments, and sometimes you're better
off biting the bullet and architecting for multiple servers from the
getgo.

The number of servers and amount of storage mean nothing in my opinion.
The
issues of what type of storage it is, how many files on the servers, what
type of workload the server is, what type of server it is, what type of
network connection the server has, what is the backup window, and what
bandwidth is in the network are more interesting issues in the sizing. If
they are all Gigabit, SAN connected ESS disk, and high end servers then
the
answer is much easier to calculate.

This is not something you just throw into a calculator and bing comes the
answer. You have to model the environment, categorize the data and
servers,
figure out the critical path, and then you have a hope of configuring a
solution.

Hi!

Does anyone have any good tips on sizing a TSM server appropriately? I do
have the sizing tool but there is so much manual work in trying to
populate
that to get any information, particularly when you don't have
documentation
for every environment. I would welcome some comparisons if you care to
share. I will have automated tape libraries at each location also,
ranging
from a L180, L700 or Powderhorn.

I have 5 different sites to size:
1.) 40 servers - 1.5 tb storage total
2.) 50 servers - 1 tb storage total
3.) 300 servers - 11 tb. storage
4.) 125 servers - 6 tb. storage
5.) Moving from Mainframe to Unix - and merging two different backup
environments into one.
TSM on OS/390 - Current occupancy is 18 TB, TSM database = 18gb
 Upstream - 325 clients

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Re: move data

2002-04-03 Thread David Longo

Yes, with certain criteria. If you make the 2 tapes (or any qty) to
read only and then move data on them, several possibilties
happen. (I have done this before, so this is real experience).

1. If there is any tape in this pool that is read write and filling then
one of these tapes will be the destination, if tape is in library.

2. If no tapes in this pool fit this category, then a tape from scratch
will be chosen. You have to make sure that only K tapes are scratch,
if there are J scratches they are just as likely to be chosen.

Also after you move data off a tape and it is then scratch, then check
it out from library or it is subject to be reused.

David Longo

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 04/03/02 05:05PM >>>
I can't actually try this since I have processes running so I thought I'd
see if I can get an answer while I'm waiting for access to drives. I have a
tape pool with 2 filling tapes and many full tapes. Can I update the 2
filling tapes to read only and expect that move data will move data from
filling and full tapes to scratch tapes?

What I'm trying to do is move data off the J tapes to K scratch tapes.

there a registry setting or configuration file for Server Utilities to set
the SERVER_CONSOLE password to blank? The only remedy to this is to set
Authentication to Off which is unacceptable in our environment.

All other admin accounts work and Clients connect fine, but tape operators
are used to the Server Console Monitor and management requires this problem
remedied.

Query about QUERY in TSM

Re: TSM Server Sizing

2002-04-03 Thread Seay, Paul

The number of servers and amount of storage mean nothing in my opinion. The
issues of what type of storage it is, how many files on the servers, what
type of workload the server is, what type of server it is, what type of
network connection the server has, what is the backup window, and what
bandwidth is in the network are more interesting issues in the sizing. If
they are all Gigabit, SAN connected ESS disk, and high end servers then the
answer is much easier to calculate.

This is not something you just throw into a calculator and bing comes the
answer. You have to model the environment, categorize the data and servers,
figure out the critical path, and then you have a hope of configuring a
solution.

Hi!

Does anyone have any good tips on sizing a TSM server appropriately? I do
have the sizing tool but there is so much manual work in trying to populate
that to get any information, particularly when you don't have documentation
for every environment. I would welcome some comparisons if you care to
share. I will have automated tape libraries at each location also, ranging
from a L180, L700 or Powderhorn.

Also, does the estimated capacity on the define devclass effect the

I think it's better to make a rough guess, or even throw a dart, then grow

except trying to get the sizing just right. That's misguided effort.

What you DO need is some way to monitor growth rates, so you can predict

4.1.0 Server Install on AIX

2002-04-03 Thread Jolliff, Dale

I'm attempting to setup a TSM server for testing using the 4.1.0 install
media.
I have searched back through the mailing list archives and I see that there
has been mentioned some install issues with 4.1 if /usr has to be expanded.

I'm using an old RS/6000 with limited disk space, and the install does not
indicate any failure, but no log, db or storage files are created, and the
dsmserv.dsk is never created.

I mounted an NFS share to /usr/tivoli and installed again, with the same
results.
(plenty of space, but slow access)
Install.trace still shows insufficient space to create the volumes

Now, unless I'm missing something, I should be able to use dsmfmt to create
the db and log volumes, and the dsmserv.dsk should be created, correct?

I find that dsmfmt will create the volumes, however, a dsmserv.dsk is never
created.

Is this a bug in 4.1 or have I missed a step?

Re: TSM database maximum recommended size

2002-04-03 Thread Nicholas Cassimatis

I have 2 "rules" for DB size.

1. Restore time - if it will take longer than your recovery window on your
TSM server to restore the database, your DB is too big. A good estimate of
restore time is 50% longer than the backup - 2 hours to backup the
database, 3 hours to restore. If your maximum outage on your TSM server is
6 hours, and the database backup takes 4 hours, you're cutting it very
close.
2. Backup media - I don't like spanning my TSM DB backup across 2 pieces
of media. If you have something small (3570, 3995, 8mm, etc) and it takes
more than 1 volume to backup the database, it's too big. If you do have to
restore the database, having to find two (or more) pieces of media to do it
can make things more complex that I'd want to deal with. This is a
personal opinion, based on personal preferences, but it can be a good lever
toward getting better/bigger/more advanced media technology, too.

The scheduler service is started and it logs an entry into the dsmsched.log
that it is "Waiting to be contacted by server" , but the backup never runs.
Each day the TSM server lists the backup status as "Missed." Has anyone

Re: AFS backup

2002-04-03 Thread Brian T. Huntley

Howdy, Eric...

It depends on which AFS backup client you are using. If you use the file
backup client, TSM controls the retention of the files just as any other
filesystem. If you use the volume backups, however, you will need to do
the controls through AFS.

We backed-up our 500GB AFS cell by volume for quite awhile due to the
performance benefits, but found it required an absolutely silly amount of
tape storage to retain backups as far back as we had to go. So, we made
the shift to file backups, and, although it is MUCH slower than the volume
dumps, we've accepted that limitation to make our tape requirements a bit
more reasonable. I'd be happy to discuss further, if you are interested.

Oh, also, you really need the AFS manuals to be able to get the full story
on AFS backups through TSM. There are some sections that directly address
connecting AFS and TSM.

Re: domain ?

2002-04-03 Thread Mr. Lindsay Morris

I recommend using one domain where possible. I've seen sites that have gone
crazy with domains, making them hard to manage.

I think it's NOT useful to have a OS-specific domains, like one for NT and a
domain for AIX, though I see this done a lot.

It may be useful to have domains for different parts of the business, if you
need to give someone else limited TSM access rights to those nodes.

Another reason for breaking your site up into domains is that some nodes
need different policies than other nodes. But consider: some FILES on node
X need different policies than other FILES on the same node X. Use client
option sets or the dsm.opt files to set up these policies (either at the
node level, the file level, or both), not domains.

IMHO, anyway.

We used to see similar problems when we used TDP for Microsoft SQL Server
on one of our client systems. One of the database backups arrived as a
single file with a size of about 15 gigabytes. The arrival of this file
was treated as a single transaction which lasted for hours. Recovery log
space allocated during the transaction was tied up until the transaction
finally ended. I don't know whether TDP for R/3 would be subject to the
same sort of pathalogical behavior.

Question about tape drive utilization and the summary file

2002-04-03 Thread David Jelinek

Is the summary file supposed to list all tape mounts for drives online to TSM? I
thought that I would use the summary log to determine tape utilization. When I pulled
the data, I discovered that we have been using drives 0,1, and 3 but not using drive 2
(not a single mount in a month and a half according to the summary table). And yes,
the drive has been online to TSM the whole time with no errors reported that I can
find. Am I missing something obvious? We have a 3494 library with 3590 drives.
Thanks in advance.

2002-04-03 Thread Alex Paschal

As Paul said, you've most likely got a long running session or process that
has a transaction pinning the log. I've got a cron'd script that runs every
10 minutes that logs to an alog. This is a cirular log that won't grow out
of control even if you never check it. This helps me figure out what's
causing my pinned recovery log on the rare occassion it happens. A simple
example is included below.

Anyone seen this before?

Our TSM server has crashed 3 nights running with a full log. We started
with Logmode=Rollforward and 3960 MB log. We tried increasing to 6012 MB,
which delayed the crash by about 45 mins.

We have DB backup trigger at 60%. But even when the backup ran, we got msg
"ANR4556W Attention: the database backup operation did not free sufficient
recovery log space to lower utilization below the database backup trigger.
The recovery log size may need to be increased." I guess this indicates a
transaction which is out of control - but I can't identify which TXN it is.

We have now switched to Logmode=normal, but I'm not sure it'll help.

Setup: TSM server 4.2.1.11 running on AIX 4.3.3 plus ML9 and patches.
Clients on NetWare, Windows, Unix (various flavours), plus TDP for R/3.

Any comments, suggestions, etc received gratefully.

Re: Our log fills up and server crashes

2002-04-03 Thread Tab Trepagnier

Richard,

Several years ago we had the same issue. The fact that your (large) log
fills up tells me that unless you have a *HUGE* TSM system, you might be
having the same issue we had.

In our case, we had an Irix server that served as the hub of a network of
Irix CAD workstations. Each workstation had a link from its X desktop to
the X desktop of the server. The server had a link on its X desktop back
to the X desktop of every workstation.

When we launched archives on any workstation or on the CAD server, it would
iteratively follow those links back and forth creating ADSM entries like:
/file
/link1/file
/link2/link1/file
/link1/link2/link1/file
/link2/link1/link2/link1/file
and so forth.
The client did that on every file on every client until the maximum path
length was reached and then it started with the next file!

Because these were fast machines on 100 Mbs links, the phenomenon would
generate hundreds of millions of "files" on every archive and crash the
server before it had time to load a tape and save a DB copy. At the time
we were running with a log size of just under 5 GB.

With the 3.1.0.7 client, the ARCHSYMLinkasfile option was introduced, and
that fixed the problem, but by then our DB was garbaged up, and still is to
some extent.

Since then we added 50% more clients, and shrunk the log to 4.4 GB, but
because that behavior has not recurred, we haven't had a "log crash" in
over two years.

Hope this helps.

it takes 3 Saturdays to make a complete pass.

We backup 50- 100 gb a day, mostly small files from enduser desktop machines.

While I am satisfied with all this, the new management has decreed the death

Re: domain ?

2002-04-03 Thread Kelly J. Lipp

Pros: much simpler to manage a small number of things. If you don't have
radically different retention policies or some regulating influence
suggesting separation, a single domain sending information to a single pool
hierarchy is perfectly fine.

Cons: none if the conditions above are met.

In some cases, I like the idea of two domains: one for non-critical systems
and one for critical. For the critical systems, build your pool hierarchy
with a collocated tape pool for faster restores.

Also, if the length of the field is unknown as in a numeric text that you
want to evaluate you can do a TRIM on it to remove the blanks so that you
can convert it to a decimal number.

To control the length of character fields you can use:

CHAR(expression,n)
LEFT(exppression,n)
RIGHT(expression,n)
where n is the length of the string you want returned

Ike,
I got it to work with some help from Dennis Glover. He sent me an
example of something that worked. The big difference was that the -COMMA
option MUST BE LISTED BEFORE THE MACRO option. So
DSMADMC -ID=x -PA=x -COMMA MACRO DD:D2works fine but
DSMADMC -ID=x -PA=x MACRO DD:D2 -COMMA does not!

I have tried everyone's suggestions. I believe the fact that I have one AS
statement in the script that it will ignore the attempts of fixing the
output into a 1 line per node output. The -COMMAdelimited , -TABdelimited,
-OUT didn't work. I was able to get a 1 line output, with a title line and
some other 'extra' lines of TSM header and msgs. The only way I seem to
have in controlling this is with the suggestion from Paul, using an AS "
big area " . This whole 'programming' area seems to go by a lot of
undocumented rules. Why don't they document them somewhere? Or give a
direct reference to which other product doc to look at? I am able to
directly control the length of a numeric output with 'decimal(xx)'
statement. What about character output? I am still disappointed that I
can not seem to get an output that would be nothing more than what I really
want 12 character node name delimiter 4 digit number of days since last
access delimiter contact field name of 20 characters, then the next
line . The best I came up with is as follows.
SCRIPT...

select node_name as "NODE", -
  cast((current_timestamp-lastacc_time)days as decimal(4)) as "DAYS", -
contact as " CONTACT " from nodes where -
  cast((current_timestamp-lastacc_time)days as decimal) >= 7

Re: TOTAL Data on the Backup System

2002-04-03 Thread Mr. Lindsay Morris

See "query occupancy", but you'll have to run it through a script to add it
up into one number.
Servergraph/TSM does this daily, and breaks it out by primary/copypool, and
by backups/ archives /HSM data - and also shows you the trend over time for
each of these, so you can see if something's starting to explode.

If you want to write your own script for this, look at
http://www.servergraph.com/techtip.shtml, which should help you get clean
query output.

IMHO, domains are just there for your use in any sort of logical separation
you wish to perform...
We use them to differ between UNIX-SAP, UNIX-non-SAP, NT, DOMINO, LNOTES,
ADSM (other adsm servers), etc...
That has fit our needs...
If you have different service levels for the different clients, you may want
to use different domains to represent the different service levels...(hot,
warm, cold; gold, silver, bronze; daily, weekly, monthly; etc...)

This is one reason why I like TSM so much, you may customize it to fit your
needs.
it provides for virtually unlimited means to isolate/model/manage your

Two good uses of domains:
- to get different default management classes for different nodes

80 GB is in the range of what I think of as "barely manageable" on your
average midrange Unix computer (IBM H80, Sun E450). I know folks run
bigger DBs (somebody's got one in excess of 160GB) but you need
substantial server hardware and very fast disks.

Hello all,

Our data storage requirements have been driving our TSM database usage to
new heights, and we are looking for some references to "just how big is

Our current TSM database is 86.5GB and although backup and restore

How many sites are running with databases this large or larger? On what

Re: TSM Server Sizing

2002-04-03 Thread Cook, Dwight E

A lot will depend on the network connectivity and the ability of the
clients...
We have a lot of TSM servers, 9 of 10 are RS6000 7071-S70's
Some have around 100 clients run 300+ concurrent session but only push 20-30
GB/hr (compressed client data) due to client and network limitations
Some have 30 clients run < 100 concurrent sessions (actually 30 can flood a
100 Mb/sec link) and run 40-ish GB/hr for 18-20 hours at a time...(oh,
compressed client data)
In one case where we have a GB link to some clients, a single E10K will push
56 GB/hr with 30-ish sessions (compressed client data and we see about a
just under 4/1 compression so that is about 200 GB/hr of client file space)
and we may or may not have the 100 Mb/sec interface running at 40-ish GB/hr
(compressed client data)
Last I checked the S70's run about 30-50% util (still lots of power left)
I haven't checked lately on the one S70 that may take in 100-ish
GB/hr across a GB & 100 Mb/sec links...
but I do know there haven't been any "high utilization alerts"...
Oh, we do front end all our environments with large diskpools...
large enough to hold one day's worth of client traffic.

Subject: TSM Server Sizing

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

clean archive

2002-04-03 Thread Joni Moyer

Hi! I was given the following command to clean archive directories. I was
wondering if it is possible to have a list of nodes in the command? It
appears by this syntax that you can have a list of nodes separated by
commas, yet when I issued the command it would not run. Any suggestions?

CLEAN ARCHDIRectories: starts duplicate archive directory re-
moval for all nodes or a list of nodes, or resumes a cleanup
  job that was canceled.

   CLEAN ARCHDIRectories ---
  | | |
  +-nodeList+ +-FIX=No|Yes-
  | |
  +-JOBid=jobId-+

  where:
nodeList is a comma separated list of node names
jobId is a resumable cleanup job
if nodeList or JOBid= are not specified, a new job that
  cleans all nodes is assumed
FIX=no every archive directory entry for the nodeList or
all nodes will be displayed. This is the default.
=yes duplicate directories will be removed

Re: ADSM server restore

2002-04-03 Thread Kauffman, Tom

This would work, but it will require TSM to be shut down for the duration of
step 1 daily.

What you really need for TSM recovery at D/R:

1) installable system image of your AIX box. We use mksysb, run roughly
monthly or after AIX software upgrades.
2) filesystem layout of the TSM volume group (this should NOT be in the AIX
rootvg!) Our technique is to use savevg (IBM AIX utility) to save the
metadata for the TSM volume group, but exclude the data; this gets saved to
/DR/backup.adsmvg and is picked up by the mksysb used for step 1.
3) current TSM device config file and volume history file. We run this to a
floppy with doswrite at the end of our nightly backup process.
4) current TSM database backup. We run this nightly as the very last step in
copying our data for off-site storage.

To recover:

1) Boot/install from the mksysb (or sysback, if you go that way) and recover
your AIX environment
2) Restvg from /DR/adsmvg.backup; this will recreate the empty tsm
filesystems.
3) copy the device config and volume history files from the floppy to the
proper locations in the AIX system (where your dsmserv.opt says they belong)
4) edit the device config file to match the local environment (we used to go
from an STK 9710 library called 'wolf' with 9 DLT tape drives at home to a
manual library called 'wolf' with 6 DLT tape drives at the hot site)
5) Not really required with current versions, but not a bad idea -- run
dsmfmt to format your log and database files.
6) Restore the TSM database. dsmserv restore db devc=
vol= commit=yes (We strap the floppy to the database
backup daily, and this process assumes no volhist recovery, just to be on
the safe side)
7) Start TSM. Make the same library/device changes you made in the device
config file. Mark all readw/reado tapes as 'unavailable'; mark all offsite
tapes as 'readonly'.
8) As time permits, dsmfmt and install the rest of your TSM disk pools and
modify your schedules to match the D/R hotsite reality.

We've done this twice a year now for six years with no problems whatever;
feel free to contact me if you have additional questions.

Anyone out there using a action=macro schedule event and pointing to a

I would hope I can load dsmc then run an incr of the desired directory

I regard Stan Zaffos as one of the few industry analyst with credibility in
this area. I disagree with his assessment on a technical basis between
Veritas and TSM, but considering the way the quadrants are laid out and the
issues that Stan and I have discussed in the past, I know why TSM is ranked
slightly lower than NetBackup. It has to do with market share and
marketing
prowess. A lot of what the industry analyst use as a barometer is market
share. Fortunately, Stan is less influenced by this than most.

The reality is Veritas is a household word and Tivoli is not. Tivoli is
IBM. Industry analyst have no job if they always recommend IBM. IBM is
held to a different bar of support, integrity, and reliablity than the
competitors so any ranking is automatically hit with a 10% IBM tax.
Tivoli/IBM will always lag on niche functionality that are hot buttons of
some technician. In the open systems world, non-IBM customers do not want
IBM because they are afraid that IBM will come in and take over. It is a
trust factor. This is why Tivoli is engaging business partners to do most
of their sales. It is a hand holding experience that the customer feels
comfortable with.

But, things are changing quickly. Tivoli is displacing NetBackup at quite
a
clip now in the large enterprises. Tivoli's commitment to the Windows
platform is excellent and their functionality development is the strongest
in that area. That will get them attention and market share. Let's face
it
if every one runs a product on Windows and it is very successful, they will
choose it for their other environments. Watch out Roseville, the Tivoli
roller is coming.

Hi Tor,

if problem with memory overflow appears at start of backup, so I think I
know what is your problem ... I have similar one on AIX client which backs
up tons of files through NFS. Try to include parameter
MEMORYEFFICIENBACKUP
YES into your dsm.opt file (or check this switch through client GUI Edit -
Preferences - Backup - Use less memory). TSM client tried to load all

You can try upgrading to the 4.1.2.20 client, that fixed a lot of misc.

Hi Tor,

if problem with memory overflow appears at start of backup, so I think I
know what is your problem ... I have similar one on AIX client which backs
up tons of files through NFS. Try to include parameter MEMORYEFFICIENBACKUP
YES into your dsm.opt file (or check this switch through client GUI Edit -
Preferences - Backup - Use less memory). TSM client tried to load all
directory structure to memory at start of backup by default. If you use
MEMORYEFFICIENBACKUP switch, client do it by simple directories. I suggest
it because of your note about large amount of files. Perhaps it helps.

Re: don´t aynone know anything about Encryption in TSM.

2002-04-03 Thread Justin Derrick

Um, why would you need the key?

Your question is a little too vague to answer properly.

The key is only needed for two steps: encryption, and decryption (ie
backup, then restore). Every other operation the TSM server does (store,
copy, move, collocate, expire) is done with the encrypted files. The TSM
server doesn't care what the contents of the file are, it just moves the
files around according to the policies that have been defined.

Like I said previously -- this opens up the entire issue of a key
repository -- if a user misplaces, forgets, or the key files on the
individuals PC are destroyed, the data is *gone*. How do you back up key
files when you don't trust your offsite storage to keep your data private?
(Possible answer: back up your key files and send them to a different
storage company.) But key management is another problem entirely.

Re: ADSM server restore

2002-04-03 Thread Justin Derrick

Hi Bruno...

A few things...

1) Upgrade immediately, if not sooner. ADSM (version 3.1) is very old and
is unsupported, and if you encounter problems, you'll need to call on a
highly paid consultant who remembers all the sillyness that came along with
3.1. If you're running 3.7 or higher (when it was renamed to TSM) and
called it ADSM out of habit, you can optionally skip this step. *grin*

2) Deleting and reconfiguring drive and libraries at the operating system
level is fine -- but don't forget that you need to redefine the drives and
libraries inside ADSM to match the new reality you just created.

3) Your step 4 needs about 10 additional steps as ADSM restores never seem
to go as smoothly as you'd like. One hint though... If you halt ADSM when
you're performing your filesystem backups, and your database and log
filesystems (as well as any disk storagepools you have) are files in a JFS
filesystem, you can usually get away with having your tar or in AIX's case,
mksysb back up the files, and restore them on your new system without too
much trouble. However, you still need to redefine drives inside TSM as per
my note above.

Good luck, and the only thing I can really recommend is testing your
restore until you get it right, at least twice!

Re: Our log fills up and server crashes

2002-04-03 Thread Seay, Paul

You have something pinning the log. Are you running expiration or do you
have a client that is taking forever to backup? Typically, it is a client
on a very slow link that has a bad TSM configuration. If it is the client
problem you have to reduce the transaction size parameters so that you get
commits more often.

This was discussed at length at Share in Nashville.

Anyone seen this before?

Our TSM server has crashed 3 nights running with a full log. We started with
Logmode=Rollforward and 3960 MB log. We tried increasing to 6012 MB, which
delayed the crash by about 45 mins.

Re: Technical comparisons

2002-04-03 Thread Seay, Paul

I regard Stan Zaffos as one of the few industry analyst with credibility in
this area. I disagree with his assessment on a technical basis between
Veritas and TSM, but considering the way the quadrants are laid out and the
issues that Stan and I have discussed in the past, I know why TSM is ranked
slightly lower than NetBackup. It has to do with market share and marketing

Tivoli is displacing NetBackup at quite a
clip now in the large enterprises. Tivoli's commitment to the Windows
platform is excellent and their functionality development is the strongest
in that area. That will get them attention and market share. Let's face it
if every one runs a product on Windows and it is very successful, they will
choose it for their other environments. Watch out Roseville, the Tivoli
roller is coming.

Does anyone have a link to some detailed "white paper" sort of comparisons

I have a customer specifically asking for comparisons between Veritas and

Hello,

I had that problem the other day with reclaiming an offsite volume and was
told to do an audit volume on it which did work... Now I am have problems
with that tape. Apparently it is still offsite in the vault and TSM is
trying to mount the volume in the silo and use it in the copy storage pool
for a backup process, which it can't possibly do. I think that the volume
is being shipped to onsite to be put in the silo, but that hasn't ocurred
yet. To stop TSM from using this tape I marked it readonly, but what
should I do to prevent this problem from happening again?

Thanks so much

Re: Question about 3590 tape drives

2002-04-03 Thread Christo Heuer

Hi Gerhard,

stop/start processing of the tape drive - the disk pool does not
stream the data fast enough to cause a continues flow of data - hence
when there has been a stop in the flow of data there needs to be some
kind of re-positioning - to continue writing where the last bit of
data was written.
Normal behavior.

Cheers
Christo

Hello,
I observed some strange behaviour of a 3590-E1A tape drive. During a
migrate operation from a disk pool to a sequential pool I watched the
operator panel. There I could see that the device after a write operation
did a locate followed by a read and then resumed writing. I observed this
behaviour several times. Is there an explanation for this?
I run TSM 4.1.2 on AIX 4.3.3

Trouble is; every 10 minutes or so the TSM client agent service stops.. just

I have made a "net start.. " script that runs every 10 minute, but that's no

Any reason for this happening known to man? Or to IBM?

Re: Macintosh files on an NT server/client

2002-04-03 Thread William Rosette

I currently have our printing services Macintosh desktops going to an NT
server (client in TSM). When my AIX TSM server trys to back up the NT box
it runs fine till it gets to the Macintosh files and then crawls. I have
97% I/O wait. It is not beating the client's memory or processor, it just
takes its sweet ol time converting. I FTP'ed 2 files (oh, by the way it is
a straight GB fiber from NT client to AIX server) 1 100 MB NT file took 4
seconds to FTP and the other 200 MB Macintosh File took 4 minutes. When
talking to the Network guru and Support line, the Network guru asked if I
could back up RAW and skip the NT conversion. Support said if I could make
like an NFS mount on the NT box, then the AIX TSM server could back up RAW.
The Network guru said he has some software that may make this possible. My
question is, will this work and the main thing is will it restore? Thank
you to all you TSMers, I thouroughly enjoy y'all's strings of dialogue.
Thanx again.

Using Administrative Client Options

Using Administrative Client Options

In all administrative client modes, the administrative client options
modify
your administrative client session responses.

The following administrative client options can be specified with the
DSMADMC command and are valid from an administrative client session
only:

-DISPLaymode=LISt or TABle
Allows you to force the QUERY output to tabular or list format
regardless of the command line window column width.

If you want the output to go to a file and you are using the
-DISPLaymode option, use redirection to write to the file. Do not
use
 the -OUTfile option.

-ID=userid
 Specifies the administrator's user ID.

-PAssword=password
 Specifies the administrator's password.

-NOConfirm
Specifies that you do not want TSM to request confirmation before
processing commands that affect the availability of the server or
data
 managed by the server.

-Quiet
Specifies that TSM does not display standard output messages to
your
screen. However, when you use this option, certain error messages
still
 appear.

-CONsolemode
Specifies that TSM runs in console mode. All unsolicited server
console
output is echoed to your screen.

-MOUNTmode
Specifies that TSM runs in mount mode. All server removable-media
mount
messages are echoed to your scre en.

-Itemcommit
Specifies that TSM commits commands inside a script or a macro as
each
 command is processed.

-OUTfile=filename
Specifies that output from a server query is redirected to a
specified
file. In batch mode, output is redirected to a file you specify and
the
format of the output matches the format of the output on your
screen.

In interactive, console, or mount mode sessions, output displays on
 your screen.

-OUTfile
Specifies that output from a server query is formatted one line per
query. This option is available in batch mode only.

-COMMAdelimited
Specifies that any tabular output from a server query is to be
formatted as comma-separated strings rather than in readable
format.
This option is intended to be used primarily when redirecting the
output of an SQL query (SELECT command). The comma-separated value
format is a standard data format which can be processed by many
common
programs, including spreadsheets, data bases, and report
generators.

-TABdelimited
Specifies that any tabular output from a server query is to be
formatted as tab-separated strings rather than in readable format.
This
option is intended to be used primarily when redirecting the output
of
an SQL query (SELECT command). The tab-separated value format is a
standard data format which can be processed by many common
programs,
including spreadsheets, databases, and report generators.

Besides the options listed here, you can also specify any option that is
in
the client options file. Each option must be preceded with a hyphen and

filesets to be legit.. (Wrong not in this env.)

There have been buffer overflow issues in every version of AIX so far..

Problem Summar y

The tsm family of commands (tsm, getty, login) does not
properly validate the port name entered on the command
line.
This can allow unpriviledged users to become root.

I think I had to install this separately at a client site because it
required a few steps in order to take proper effect... But to be
absolutely clear, this isn't Tivoli Storage Manager related. For some
reason, the 'login' program on AIX is a link (an alias, if you will) to the
'tsm' program, which, again, has nothing to do with Tivoli Storage Manager.

Do you have an example for the proper syntax/usage of using TRIM or CHAR?

I have not found a way to get my data on one line either. I input the data

SCRIPT...

select node_name as "NODE", -
  cast((current_timestamp-lastacc_time)days as decimal(4)) as "DAYS", -
contact as " CONTACT " from nodes where -
  cast((current_timestamp-lastacc_time)days as decimal) >= 7

Re: TSM Client Agent randomly stopping on Windows 2000 SP2

2002-04-03 Thread Ochs, Duane

Hi Tor,
Is there anything that is being displayed in Event Viewer in either
Application logs or System Logs that corresponds to the same time as your
Scheduler Service failures ?

Also, unless you have a particular requirement for retaining your logs for
more than a week you could try setting the schedlogretention and
errorlogretention to around 7 - 14 days. We have had some strange things
happen when we had retention set to 90 days. Especially on our larger
systems.

The TSM client agent should not be running all the time. It is only used to
communicate with the TSM server for backups, restore, archives and retrieval
via the web client. If your site is using this functionality then the Client
Acceptor should always be running.

Does anyone have a link to some detailed "white paper" sort of comparisons
between TSM and the leading competitors in storage management?

I have a customer specifically asking for comparisons between Veritas and
Tivoli - and the most recent google search turned up several marketing
pieces from Veritas and one Gartner comparison on old versions of ADSM/TSM
(version 3.x)..

Surely someone else has already invented this wheel?

Re: TSM Client Agent randomly stopping on Windows 2000 SP2

2002-04-03 Thread Andrew Raibeck

There are no problems like this that I am aware of in the 4.1.3.0 client.

At the time the service stops, is the client actively backing up data, or
just sitting idly by, waiting for the scheduled event?

Have you checked the dsmsched.log and dsmerror.log files? They might
contain some useful information. Also, check your system's Application and
System event logs to see if there are any messages that might pertain to
the problem.

Lastly, you mentioned that you are backing up to an ADSM server. Was that
just a "slip", or do you really mean *ADSM*? Win2K support won't work very
well, if at all, with an ADSM server. You might be able to back up regular
files, but system objects such as registry, RSM, etc., will almost
certainly not work, and could be related to the problem you are seeing
(assuming TSM was actively backing up data at the time you saw the service
stop).

Re: TSM Client Agent randomly stopping on Windows 2000 SP2

2002-04-03 Thread Prather, Wanda

I have seen that happen occasionally on our Win2K machines running the 4.1.3

You can try upgrading to the 4.1.2.20 client, that fixed a lot of misc.
problems for me on Win2K machines, including the "program memory exhausted"
messages.
Unless this machine really IS very short on memory...

Hi Tor!
dsmcsvc Is the scheduler. The TSM Client Acceptor should only be running if
your planning to use the Backup/Archive Web client (http://client:1581)

2002-04-03 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM

Hi Tor!
Hmm. Quite an interesting system you have there!
I'm a little bit out of suggestions here. You could check the Win2K Event
Viewer, maybe you can find any reason why Windows stops the service.
Maybe you really have a memory problem on your system (because of another
piece of software with memory leakage?). Have you started the Task Manager
to see how much memory is in use/available?
It's rather easy to obtain a Tivoli Support userid. You just have to know
your company's IBM or Tivoli Customer Number and fill the form on
http://www.tivoli.com/support/custreg/custreg.html. That's it! You will
receive your userid probably somewhere today.
The Tivoli support database doesn't help you with this problem though...

Re: dsmadmc displaymode

2002-04-03 Thread Michael Bartl

John,
you can get information on the displaymode-option from dsmadmc help 10
(Using Administrative Client Options). It's just a bit strange, dsmadmc
ends this help section just within one sentence - we will never find out
how it ends...

I believe the fact that I have one AS

some other 'extra' lines of TSM header and msgs.

That will help, but you can also do the AS "[ lots of spaces ]" to lengthen
the output field. What we really need is a set displaymode=fixedraw.

This is an example of something that I do:

select stgpool_name as "Storage Pool Name ",
cast(sum(est_capacity_MB*pct_utilized/100/1024) as decimal(7,3)) as "Total
GB in Pool", cast(avg(est_capacity_MB*pct_utilized/100/1024) as
decimal(7,3)) as "AVG GB / Tape", cast(count(volume_name) as decimal(4,0))
as "Tapes " from volumes where stgpool_name like 'CPY%' or stgpool_name like
'TAPE%' group by stgpool_name

Notice that he stgpool_name field is lenghtened to prevent the wrap by
adding the spaces.

Are there any known issues with running TSM agents on Windows 2000? Can I upgrade the
agent running on my Windows 2000 server without changing the ADSM config, or upgrading
all other TSM agents?

Thank you very much in advance for any help !!
