Re: Slow DB2 backups and IBM says I'm too old for support.
Jeff, Could you be a little more specific? Which levels of TSM Client API, TSM Server, DB2 etc you are running? What is your hardware and disk setup on the client etc. Has `topas` or the other perf tools given you an view of whether you are processor, disk io bound etc? I'm sure we've plenty of AIX and DB2 backer-uppers (sp?!) on the list who given this info might be able to help narrow down your problem - it certainly sounds like it could be an interesting thread... Rgds, David McClelland Global Management Systems, Reuters Ltd., London -Original Message- From: Jeff Rogers [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 19 November 2003 04:31 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Slow DB2 backups and IBM says I'm too old for support. We have what appeared to be a simple problem, we installed a new DB2 server and the backups (API) are slow, like 27 hours to backup a 100GB database. We have been backing up this database for years from a different server in less than two hours. The main difference between the two servers? The AIX version, the old server is AIX 4.3.3 the new one is AIX 5. The new server has been doing backups of small databases without issue for a few months. FWIW - when I look at the traffic on the Ethernet interface, I see 800KB/s when the new server is doing a backup. I see 2500KB/s when the old server is doing a back up. The servers share the same backup network. So, the TSM server seems fine, it appears the client is not sending data. I have no idea if this can be tuned or not, or if we have a version compatibility issue. So, we called TSM support, where we were more or less told to go away, your server is too old, your contract does not cover it. So, that is what I pay all this passport advantage money for. This leads me to my question, what version of TSM is currently supported, and which supported version is considered stable? I sure don't want to upgrade a working, super stable TSM install. But apparently I have to. I'm quite annoyed with IBM lately, it seems like customer service for all products is going downhill. Re: Catalog Size and large number of files
Hi Joe! Well, in that case full backups won't even help you. A backup once a month to a different managementclass will cause all previous backups to be rebound to this managementclass. The next day you run a standard backup, all previous backups (including the yesterday backup!) are rebound again to the standard retention. Like mentioned here yesterday by several people: use backupsets, use archiving or use a different node name for the long term storage backup. 3590 drive in 3494 lib question
Running TSM 5.1.6.2 on Solaris 2.7 - SCSI Attached to an IBM 3494 library with two 3590 H1A drives Hi All I have what is probably a very simply question, but then they all are when you know the answers. I have a need to back up a 50GB directory on one of our sun boxes to send to our US office. The machine in question does not have a SCSI card installed, so I was thinking of remotely mounting the dir onto our TSM server and then copying it directly to one of the drives in our library. Now, my question is this. If I put the library in manual mode, can I just back up data directly to the device using the device special file name ( /dev/rmt/3stc for example). Please...when posting to technical forums, be specific as to levels. Your AIX 5.?.?.? probably is not current, and is suffering TCP/IP performace problems as has been noted by multiple posters over the past months. If your AIX is up to level, the standard advice is to perform benchmark measurements of your network performance, in concert with your site network people, to help isolate the problem area. You should not immediately attribute network throughput problems to the application (TSM), which may be the victim of opsys issues or network hardware/configuration. Richard Sims, BU

The point here is that in the readme (pasted below) is that we actually saw Significant upgrade db performance. Example before 5.1.7 we upgraded an H80 with 88GB DB and it took 8hrs. On our other H80 with 100GB db it took 4hours!!! Amazing! Once you do the update you then have to put the 5.1 base cd in and only install the lic pack as mentioned below. * * $$7 AIX Installation considerations * * This maintenance level introduces improvements in the performance of the upgradedb command. For this change it was decided to designate 5.1.7.0 as a new base for Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.1 for AIX. Current V5.1 customers who have been applying prior service (patches or ptfs) without committing will find that the product will be committed at the 5.1.7.0 level. Customers migrating from a prior release of Tivoli Storage Manager MUST 1. First download and install 5.1.7.0 (Not 5.1.0.0 or 5.1.5.0) 2. Then install license enablement and license certificates from your product CD. New customers can install from CD then upgrade to 5.1.7 or use the same scheme as customers migrating. That is, install 5.1.7 immediately then install license enablement from CD. ftp://service.software.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/server/v5r1/AIX/5.1.7.0/ -Original Message- From: Pothula S Paparao [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2003 3:57 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Step Upgrade TSM 4.2.1 to v5.1 Hi , I Hav upgraded 4.2.1 to 5.1.7.3 latest without any problem. Re: 2 fibre interfaces per drive
This function is supported only on 3590 and 3592 Fibre Channel tape drives that are native attached. This function is not supported for devices that are attached through an IBM San Data Gateway. I saw this comment in the Atape manual also . . . . it explains the confusion. The Data Gateway would be for attaching 3590 drives with SCSI interfaces to a SAN via a SCSI/FC protocol converter box. So if you have SCSI 3590 drives that are SAN attached via a gateway, then you cannot use the load balancing/failover feature. But, I am looking at Pub GC35-0154-11 (IBM TotalStorage Tape Device Drivers Installation and User's Guide), and the Notes at the bottom of page 25, in the Automatic Failover section of Chapter 6 Alternate Pathing Support states: This function is supported only on 3590 and 3592 Fibre Channel tape drives that are native attached. Has anyone tried configuring alternate path support for SAN attached 3590-H's? The book says that it is not supported. A recent version of Atape is required for dual path support. We use Atape 8.3.1.0. You also need to enable alternative pathing support on the rmt device which, I think is set to off by default: i.e. chdev -l device -a alt_pathing=yes Then when you make the devices available to the host you will notice twice the number of drives. If you look at the device attributes with lsattr -El rmtx you will notice the location code xx-xx-xx-ALT or PRI , the primary device value and the WWN. The latter will be 0xnn4n for the primary device and 0xnn8n for the alternative device. These allow you to 'pair' up the devices. If you have more than 3 or 4 tape devices I would recommend you employ a naming convention to the devices to make these pairs more transparent, by renaming them after cfgmgr has brought them into the system. Thus, we do a rmdev -l rmtX ; chdev -l rmtX -a new_name=rmtY such that the secondary / Alternative device name is 50 greater than primary device name - i.e: rmt2 = rmt52 rmt3 = rmt53 and so on. Note that errpt will log errors against both device names, depending on which interface the drive was being accessed when the error occurred. Finally, our experience tallies with Steve Harris' - failover is seamless - we pulled the active cable from a drive while backing up (test !) client data to tape and the backup carried on over the other path. TSM didn't blink. We subsequently audited the tape and all was OK. Yes, we used to get I/O errors on our 3583, although not sure if it was the same exact OP code. Our fix, we replaced our 3583 with a 3584 after trying EVERYTHING else, hardware changes, microcode, firmware. We also had many other errors/problems, along with many other list users to help build our case to get out of the 3583. Just do a search for 3583, or 3583 + problems, or 3583 + I/O, at search.adsm.org and start reading, you will see your not alone. Re: TDP/R3 BRBACKUPMGTCLASS (odd behavior)
Dwight, Why are you using several backup mgmtclasses? Different libraries? I can't explain this behaviour. But if you want approximately the same amount sent to each mgmtclass, you can try the following: MAX_BACK_SESSIONS 15 . SERVER TSM_1 SESSIONS4 BRBACKUPMGTCLASSA35_PR5_A SERVER TSM_2 SESSIONS4 BRBACKUPMGTCLASSA35_PR5_B SERVER TSM_3 SESSIONS4 BRBACKUPMGTCLASSA35_PR5_C SERVER TSM_4 SESSIONS3 BRBACKUPMGTCLASSA35_PR5_C TSM_1 - TSM_4 are in this case aliases for the same TSM-server. In this scenario it can still happen that one mgmt-class gets more files (=data?) then the others if these classes are based on different tape-technology. Hi, CC=304 = changer failure. Key=04 = hardware error. ASC=15 = Position problem. Was it working before and did you change anything? Either you do have a hardware problem or TSM isn't able to communicatie with the library. Last time I had something like this, it was after upgrading TSM. Re: 3583 LTO Library
The TSM Messages manual lists common ASC/ASCQ error combinations. We've seen change problems in many ways...a dropped tape within the library that inhibits the robot...the tape is stuck in the slot, check the tape...there was an upgrade to the actual tape slots themselves that caused tapes to be slightly harder to pull out and the change wasn't strong enough to pull it outan actual hardware problem. Was there any SAC code displayed in the LCD on the library? These are in the 3583 operators guide. The messages manual lists corrective action for the error codes. You can go here to get the 5.2.1 version: Site: ftp.software.ibm.com Dir: /storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/tivoli-data-protection/ntsql/v521/ 5.2.1 will install and run with the PAID license from the 2.2.1 product. This fix worked for me. I got nailed by this on my servers. Sessions intermittently slowing to a crawl. Noticed it first with our nt 4.0 clients, then I would see it in TDP for exchange clients and W2K clients. But not always the same servers each day. Got lucky with the ITSM level 2 guy, he recognized it right away. Upgrade to AIX 5.1 then TSM 5.2.1.2 or 5.2.1.3
Next week I will be upgrading my AIX TSM server to AIX 5.1 ML5 currently running TSM 5.1.1.6 32bit. I also want to switch from 32 to 64bit. I know that I need to uninstall tivoli.tsm.devices.aix43.rte. Also that I need to install/upgrade TSM 64bit. To accomplish this do I need to unistall 32 bit TSM reinstall the 64bit or just run the install of 64bit? If I need to unistall TSM 32bit can this be done before the AIX upgrade? My plan is to uninstall the tsm.devices.aix43.rte put the AIX CD in reboot into the AIX install. Then a week or 2 after that I will be upgrading TSM. Is anybody running 5.2.1.2 on AIX? If so are there any major or minor problems to watch out for? Also is there a DB upgrade going from 5.1.1.6 to 5.2.1.2 or 5.2.1.3? Re: Slow DB2 backups and IBM says I'm too old for support
Keep in mind, this system has been working flawlessly for at least two years, which is why we don't touch it. We have enough headaches, we don't need to create our own. :-) At the time we noticed this problem we were doing tests before putting this machine into production, a backup test is standard procedure. The system was idle except for this backup, this was during the day, so no other backups were going on at the same time, hence, the TSM server was also idle. Our quick reality check was to kick off a backup from a known working server, and watch the traffic. Pretty much nailing this down to the client machine, or a TSM version incompatibility issue. Backups were going to a disk storage pool, not tape. One of my original questions. What are the current supported versions of TSM, and which of those supported versions is known as the stable one, backing up TDP Domino, Oracle, DB2 (via API) and standard filesystem backups. This upgrade has been put off because I've been told it is a double hit, OS and TSM at the same time. Not fun, but at least the maintenance window is during the day. Versions: TSM Server: 4.2.1.7 Server OS: AIX: 433-10 (32-bit) Client OS: AIX 510-03 (32-bit) TSM API: 4.2.3.0 - I seem to recall we had to go above 4.2.1.7 to get it to work at all. It appears I need to get some PTF's for AIX 5 that are known to fix network problems, so I'll start there -JeffR

Interesting. We've had no such problems. One 3583 bought in April, another in July. Yes, as a matter of fact a DHCP server must be available during the ASR-based restore process. If one is not available, the restore will fail. Re: 3583 LTO Library
Lindy, We are currently seeing a similar issue. Ours is actually with a 3584 LTO library. A couple questions: Do you see any errors recorded at the OS level? In your TSM activity log, do you see tapes get marked unavailable, or read-only right after the error in your tsm actlog? What brand of media are you using? Heres a little more info on what we are seeing: When we see the error in the tsm actlog, we also see the following error logged in the OS error log. after the error, the tape is marked either unavailable, or read-only. We are currently working with IBM to resolve this issue. IBM is leaning towards bad media. We are logging several of these errors every day. Strange Windows scheduler problem
Server: AIX TSM 5.1.7 Client: Windows version 5.01, TSM client 5.2.1 I am having a very strange problem with a remote Windows box. It is set up for a schedule, and when the schedule time comes around, the TSM server attempts continuously to contact the client, but the client never responds. I have had the owner of the machine remove and restart the scheduler service on the box serveral times, and I can see it show up in the activity log. I can ping the client at port 1501, so it seems like it is listening, but the schedule always comes up as 'Missed'. It don't see connection refused or any other errors coming from the schedule, just ANR2561I messages every 30 seconds until the duration runs out. Have others had this problem, and before I walk across campus is there any diagnosis techniques to use or questions that I can ask? Is there some problem with 'prompted' mode backups on Windows, or any special way the client scheduler service needs to be set up for this to work? Thanks in advance for any assistance. bob
Re: Strange Windows scheduler problem
Had this problem recently with a windows 2000box running client v5.1.6, talking to a server solaris 2.8 v5.1.6.2. Somehow the wrong tcp/ip address got associated with the client. Filled in the tcp/ip address and got it resolved. I'll try and dig up the diagnosis messages from support. Involved digging deeply into the database, where I'd never been before. Anyway I ramble. Try filling in the client tcp/pip address manually. Hope this helps.
Re: Strange Windows scheduler problem
This is exactly what I was thinking. The IP address is filled in on the query node output, but I think the scheduler has an internal one? I looked quickly at some of the database tables, but I could not find exactly where the IP address the scheduler uses is kept.. thanks for the input. bob On Wed, Nov 19, 2003 at 01:11:54PM -0500, Lee, Gary D. wrote: Had this problem recently with a windows 2000box running client v5.1.6, talking to a server solaris 2.8 v5.1.6.2. disaster recovery question
Hello everyone! At our disaster recovery site we use all offsite tape volumes and do not use any of the disk storage pools. Our company runs tsm on the mainframe and does a full volume backup of all of the dasd every Sunday, which is what they restore at disaster recovery. I was wondering, if we don't restore any of the volumes for the disk pools and mark them offline after tsm is brought up will everything run smoothly as long as we restore the db, log, volume history and device configuration volumes? Thank you! *** Joni Moyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***
Re: Strange Windows scheduler problem
Sure you don't have 2 nodes configured with the same nodename? TSM will remember the IP/port of the last scheduler task to make contact. Check the IP address in the messages when TSM was trying to contact the client. Also, does this client have multiple NIC's and IP addresses? You may want to specify the TCPCLIENTADDRESS in the option file to make sure the one you want and that is accessible to the TSM server is used. You could also try POLLING... Let the client do it all. Be sure that the server in question is reporting its CORRECT IP address to the TSM server. I've seen this behavior with servers with incorrect entries in DNS. This should work -- we do much the same with our TSM server on AIX for D/R. When TSM fires up it marks all the disk pools off-line if they cannot be accessed or are not properly formated. Re: Step Upgrade TSM 4.2.1 to v5.1
I just spoke with an IBM guy about this topic yesterday. There are several important steps you need to do before hand: Pre-Migration Steps 1. Ensure that expiration processing has completed. This can be done a couple of ways. The easiest I have found is to run expiration without the quiet=yes option and then look in the activity log to see what node is being processed. Expiration processes nodes based on the order that they are registered to the server. You can get this information quickly by running this: select node_name,reg_time from nodes order by reg_time Perform this routine several time over the period of a day to two to see how quickly the server is getting through the node list. 2. Run the cleanup backupgroups command. This is only available as a user process starting in 4.2.4.1. The main target of this process is to fix System Objects Run this after expiration has completed 1 full cycle. If you don't do this before moving to 5.x, the conversion could take a very long time converting the DB. Migration Steps 1. Empty disk pool and backup TSM DB, then halt the server. 2. Remove current server packages (including license package). 3. Install TSM server 5.1.0 packages (including license package which should be done first). This will upgrade the DB which could take awhile depending on the DB size (awhile translates to serveral hours). 4. Start server to ensure that it works then halt the server. 5. Remove server packages (leave the licensing intact). 6. Install incremental code package (TSM 5.1.8). 7. Start server and ensure that it is working correctly. Domino TDP schedule question
When you setup the TDP for Domino, the normal configuration for running the scheduler on win2k is to use the action=Command and run the dominc.cmd file. As everyone knows this does not provide a return code for backup errrors to the scheduler, the schedule will appear as completed as long as the schedule begins on time. The question I am asking about is can you use the Action=command with a schedule and run the actual domdsmc incr * command as an object. If so, will this return a backup failure to the schedule? I am testing it but have not seen any failures yet to answer the question. Thanks for any input.
TSM performance and network options
Hi *, our TSM environment is very slow (backup from the clients and the backup storage pool from the first to the second server). So I would like to describe our environment once roughly: We have 2 TSM server (Version 5.1.8) which runs both on AIX boxes with AIX 5.1. On the first server is an 3494 library (with 4 3590 drives) connected and on the second server an 3583 (with 3 LTO Ultrium1 drives). The clients (AIX-clients and Windows clients) are connected over fastethernet or gigaethernet. First TSM server has both adapter (fast and giga). The connection between the first and the second TSM server is gigaethernet. Can you give me some tips to increase the performance? I think that are some TSM and AIX options (TCPWindowsize etc on TSM side and son no-Paramter on AIX site). What is a good start for this options? Best regards, Frank Mueller
Re: TSM performance and network options
Are you using RAW volumes or logical, file system mounted volumes for DB, log, and disk pool? RAW volumes make a HUGE difference. You should also have your client's NIC's forced to 100/Full (the ones using fastethernet), don't let them auto negotiate, kill's backup performance. I can't really speak to Aix performance with RAW volumes, maybe someone else can. I use Solaris on all of my TSM servers and I can tell a huge difference between RAW and logical. In basic benchmark testing, it took 4-6 minutes to backup 1 500MB file from the local disk on the TSM server using logical, vxfs formatted volumes. Doing the same test with RAW volumes took about 40 secs, a huge difference. I was able to replicate these results many times over. You will also see a big performance boost in operations such as expiration and file space deletions. Re: 2 fibre interfaces per drive
The tape driver does the switching from active to standby path. Tsm doesn't know anything about the paths it just sees the device /dev/rmt* I have 4 3590E driver with dual fiber attachments. Although you must be using IBM SAN adapters to user this functionality or the aix server will see an rmt device for each path. I use cambex adapters since we are use and hp san network. My aix server sees one drive with 2 paths as 2 separate devices. So I wrote a script to that monitors the path and if it fails to go into tsm and change the device to the path of the other rmt device. We would have 2 TSM servers (one being the library manager) with 2 directors, 8 lan-free clients and 24 tape drives, which we hope to share between the 2 TSM servers. We would like to have 2 fibre interfaces per drive in order to eliminate a single point of failure. My question is, how does TSM know which path it is using to the drive and how does it know that one of the paths to an individual drive is already in use? Is there software out there to manage this or is it done through the hardware configuration? If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it! Make sure file system caching is off for JFS filesystems- and consider running vmtune on aix. We have the following parameters that made a tremendous difference. I would suggest testing in a test environment first if you have the option: vmtune64 -p 10 -P 20 -s1 -W16 -c8 -R256 -F512 -u25 -b2200 -B2200 note- we are running 64bit mode AIX 5.1 ML4, hence vmtune64. Also, using Direct I/O on TSM and AIO servers on AIX can help with performance, but overall the underlying disk infrastrucutre is going to be just as important as the logical layout and tuning. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of French, Michael Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2003 2:33 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Antwort: Re: TSM performance and network options I can't really speak to Aix performance with RAW volumes, maybe someone else can. Re: 3583 LTO Library
Hi Lindy I'm not too sure if the situation was the same but I experienced that error as well and it was just after I updated TSM to the latest patches. The catch was I also updated the tape drive library drivers within windows. Do you see (on your 3583) the computer with a key icon in the console display? This would probably be accompanied by the lock icon. If so, the library is in PREVENT/ALLOW MEDIUM REMOVAL mode and you'll get the odd error. I found that if RSM (Removable Storage Management) was turned on within windows and caused conflicts with TSM. Try disabling the service within the control panel. Once that is done, you'll have to update the Path to your tape drives to be online (right now they're probably offline). UPDATE PATH server name tapedrv name SRCT=SERVER DESTT=DRIVE ONLINE=YES do that for all your tape drives and hopefully get them back up and running. I don't remember if there was a reboot in there somewhere but I'm sure it couldn't hurt. =) Cheers, Curt ___ Curt Watts Network Analyst, Capilano College [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] 19/11/2003 8:20:41 am Lindy, We are currently seeing a similar issue. dlt tapes and labels
Hi, We currently have an ATL library with dlt drives. We have decided to switch our offsite storage vendor. Come to find out we need to put their barcode on the dlt tapes. We would prefer not to replace what we currently use, but due to needing to track both numbers for recall if we don't. So their suggestion is to put their label on the left side of the tape cartridge! Has anyone else run into this and if so what have you done? thanks Paul Paul J. Re: Domino TDP schedule question
John, You should be able to modify the scripts so that the call to DOMDSMC does not use the start /B command. So , for example, ... instead of this: start /B domdsmc selective * /subdir=yes /logfile=domssch.log domsel.log ... use this: domdsmc selective * /subdir=yes /logfile=domssch.log domsel.log If this is the last command in the batch file, it should pass its return code back through the scheduler. When you use the START /B command, it returns the result of the START command... not the command it is actually starting. Thanks, Del When you setup the TDP for Domino, the normal configuration for running the scheduler on win2k is to use the action=Command and run the dominc.cmd file. As everyone knows this does not provide a return code for backup errrors to the scheduler, the schedule will appear as completed as long as the schedule begins on time. I am testing it but have not seen any failures yet to answer the question.

Re: dlt tapes and labels
We currently have an ATL library with dlt drives. I would avoid such a vendor. Adding extraneous labels to tapes intended to be handled by an ATL is, as discussed on the List, an invitation to mechanical problems; and it's certainly a hassle for your site to undertake. You may also want to reach beyond all this stuff to seek out an electronic vaulting solution, to avoid all that tape schlepping...a topic I'd like to see explored on the List. Richard Sims, BU
Migrating nodes between TSM servers
Guys (and gals), Is there a way to migrate node information (backup data, backupsets etc) between TSM servers? I have two identically configured TSM servers (4.2.3.0 on AIX) on the same network backing up around 1000 servers between them. As some of my nodes are holding more data than others, I have an uneven load on each TSM server and want to migrate nodes from one to the other. Registering the node on the other TSM server and pointing the node from one to the other is easy enough to do, but I won't retain backup history or backupset information. Any assistance would be helpful. Re: Migrating nodes between TSM servers
Hey Graham, For Backup and Archive data, yes, you can use EXPORT NODE - but because you are on v4.x of TSM, you'll have to export it to a DEVCLASS and IMPORT NODE on the other side. (That devclass can be a FILE devclass, so with some NFS, you can do it via a file system.) With TSM v5.x, you can export directly to a SERVER (In both cases, the export results in reading of off the original media and creating new media. There is no method of moving tapes to a new TSM server and having TSM recognise it.) Your backupsets are not TSM Managed, so your backup set tapes CAN be moved immediately to the new server and you can DEFINE BACKUPSET if you want the server to know about them. ...deon --- Have you looked at the A/NZ Tivoli User Group website? http://www.tuganz.org Deon George, IBM Tivoli Software Engineer, IBM Australia Office: +61 3 9626 6058, Fax: +61 3 9626 6622, Mobile: +61 412 366 816, IVPN +70 66058 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ibm.com/tivoli ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 20/11/2003 01:03:44 PM: Guys (and gals), Is there a way to migrate node information (backup data, backupsets etc) between TSM servers? Re: Migrating nodes between TSM servers
Look at the help on export node: EXPORT NODE (Export Client Node Information) Use this command to export client node definitions or file data to sequential media. Each client node definition includes information such as: * User ID, password, and contact information * Name of the client's assigned policy domain * File compression status * Whether the user has the authority to delete backed-up or archived files from server storage * Whether the client node ID is locked from server access Optionally, you can also export the following: * File space definitions * Backed-up, archived, and space-managed files * Access authorization information pertaining to the file spaces exported You could setup server-server communications and send the data directly over instead of dumping to tape then reimporting. Re: Migrating nodes between TSM servers
Graham, Export/Import node might be your best bet for what you are trying to achieve. I'm not sure if that method will carry the backupset information along with it, but you have the option of using DEFine BACKUPSET to make the backupsets available on the destination server. From the online TSM help: Use this command to define a client backup set that was previously generated on one server and make it available to the server running this command. The client node has the option of restoring the backup set from the server running this command rather than the one on which the backup set was generated. Any backup set generated on one server can be defined to another server as long as the servers share a common device type. The level of the server to which the backup set is being defined must be equal to or greater than the level of the server that generated the backup set. Fun with disaster recovery
I'm at a DR exercise and have discovered that many of the files that we needed recovered were in an unavailable primary storage pool. What seems to have happened was that a few weeks prior to the exercise we reorganized into three storage pools; one with a vaulted copy storage pool for servers that needed to be recovered, and two that did not have a vaulted copy storage pool for servers we didn't need to recover offsite. The default management class is in one of the latter pools. For whatever reason it appears that many critical files are in the default management class. What I did was to create three sets of client options, each with an INCLEXCL option to assign all files to the appropriate management class. The statements all look like include ?:\...\* mgmt_class_name and the sequence number assigned to the option statement is the highest in the list. I thought that this would 1) be the first include statement evaluated by the client (it's on the TSM server) and 2) be globally applied to all files on the client. Is the include statement correct? Is it possible that I've gotten burned because (maybe) all the files haven't rebound? Joe Howell Shelter Insurance Companies Columbia, MO - Do you Yahoo!? Free Pop-Up Blocker - Get it now
Re: Fun with disaster recovery
Joe, Is the include statement correct? Is it possible that I've gotten burned because (maybe) all the files haven't rebound? Run the Q INCLEXCL on the client to see that it is getting the INCLEXCL options that you have specified. Also remember, that REBINDing, does NOT move data between storage pools. Rebinding alters the retention policies for that file and determines the new date that the INACTIVE versions of the file will expire and be deleted. If you want to move data between storage pools, you have to do that manually with MOVE NODEDATA, etc. ...deon --- Have you looked at the A/NZ Tivoli User Group website? http://www.tuganz.org Deon George, IBM Tivoli Software Engineer, IBM Australia Office: +61 3 9626 6058, Fax: +61 3 9626 6622, Mobile: +61 412 366 816, IVPN +70 66058 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ibm.com/tivoli ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 20/11/2003 01:37:29 PM: Joe Howell Shelter Insurance Companies Columbia, MO - Do you Yahoo!? DamageTape
Hi During a client restore I got errors to restore some files and the restore freeze The error is about the tape: 11/19/2003 12:41:43 ANR8944E Hardware or media error on drive SRV4 (/dev/mt6) (OP=LOCATE, Error Number=5, CC=306, KEY=03, ASC=11, ASCQ=00, SENSE=F0.00.03.00.00.00.28.16.00.02.11.F8.11.00- .00.00.00.00.81.08.30.00.00.2A.80.00.18.F5.DA., Description=Drive or media failure). I cancel the restore and made this steps: 1. Run a MOVE DATA (it's move 40% of the data and keep 14% bad) 2. Run a AUDIT VOLHere the output: 11/20/2003 06:45:54 ANR0987I Process 10 for AUDIT VOLUME (REPAIR) running in the BACKGROUND processed 2 items with a completion state of FAILURE at 06:45:54. 3. Make the vol UNAVAILABLE 4. Run the restore again . Did those steps are correct or I need to do something else .. Please advise , Thank you in advance of your assistance.
