Re: Migration TSM 5.1 at 5.3
We upgrade from 5.1 to 5.3 earlier this year. It went very well. The upgrade does take some time to convert the TSM db. There is a procedure for cleaning up the Win system objects you will need to run. See the v5.3 readme file and the installation guide. As with any upgrade, I would strongly suggest you try this on a test system first. Re TSM 5.1 - 5.2 and Solaris 9
Hi all TSMers I am hoping to be getting a new Sun Fire V240 to replace our current E250 TSM backup server. At present our E250 still have Solaris 2.7 as the OS and I need to move top at least 2.8 in order to upgrade to TSM 5.2. What I am hoping to do providing the new server is fourth coming (and that is not yet guaranteed), is install Solaris 2.9 and then recreate the same TSM environment as on the existing E250 ( so initially running TSM 5.1.6.2 under Solaris 2.9). I will then proceed with the upgrade of TSM 5.1 to 5.2. So my question is this. Does anyone have any experience on running TSM 5.1 on Solaris 2.9 and is it a supported mix? upgrade from tsm 5.1 to 5.2 on AIX
Last weekend we migrated our TSM 5.1.6 server from AIX 4.3.3 to a different AIX server running TSM 5.1.6 and AIX 5.2.0. We did this by installing TSM 5.1.6 on the replacement server. migrating the TSM server configurable files, then bringing over the SSA disks with the TSM DB and storage pools. Came up fine. Our next step will be to upgrade to TSM 5.2.2 Questions: - should we prepare for the upgrade by doing an audit db fix=yes prior to insdtalling 5.2? - when we install 5.2, then bring up the server, will it invoke an upgrade to the TSM db as in previous versions I've upgraded? TSM 5.1 Web Client Java class error

The other server is also listening on 1501, but a JRE 1.3.1-installed browser displays; java.lang.ClassNtFoundException: COM.ibm.storage.adsm.cadmin.clientgui.DDsmApplet.class dsmerror.log details the following error; 08/07/04 13:05:39 Error opening input file /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/COM/ibm/storage/adsm/cadmin/clientgui/DDsmApplet.class However that class file (and the path from /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin)is not set, nor is DDsmApplet.class elsewhere on the server. Neither is it on the client that does work(?). In every other regard the clients are identical. Anyone any clues forfurther investigation? Many thanks Bren

"No, that is correct. You will have to upgrade AIX to 5.2 before you can upgrade TSM to 5.2." But can you run TSM 5.1 on AIX 5.2? If not then: We have AIX 4.3.3 on an SP node that will not run AIX 5.2 We have a P615 that will not run AIX 4.3.3 So if AIX 5.2 will not run TSM 5.1 and we need to move from the SP node (running AIX 4.3) to the P615 (running AIX 5.2), is there any choice but to concurrently go from TSM 5.1 to TSM 5.2? So the question remains, when the config files and database is migrated, will an upgradedb be invoked when TSM is started, or is there a way of doing the upgradedb prior to starting the server? >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/01/2004 9:00:05 AM >>> From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Lawrence Clark >We chose to do it this from necessity as we understand it. Hi: We chose to do it this from necessity as we understand it. We have to move off AIX 4.3.3 since it is not supported, but TSM 5.1 will not run on AIX 5.2 as I understand it. Or is that incorrect? If TSM 5.1 will run on AIX 5.2 then we would reinstall TSM as equivalent to the TSM running on AIX 4.3.3 (5.1,Level 6.1) and break out the upgrade as a separate step. >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/01/2004 3:22:52 AM >>> Oh lordy be! Re: TSM 5.1 server on AIX 5.2 64-bit?
Thanks to everyone who helped out! We successfully migrated the AIX 5.1 server (6H1) to AIX 5.2 using alt_disk_migration cloning and then doing a migration upgrade install on hdisk1 (while preserving AIX 5.1 on hdisk0). We had also done a bootable mksysb to DVD-RAM beforehand with mkcd. Was trivial -- only a few commands required from start to finish. TSM 5.1 64-bit started up just fine under AIX 5.2 64-bit. Once we were satisfied everything worked, after a while, we eventually removed the old AIX 5.1 rootvg on hdisk0 and re-mirrored with AIX 5.2. Had there been a serious problem with the AIX 5.2 environment, we'd have simply booted off hdisk0 to gain the pre-upgrade AIX 5.1 environment and junked AIX 5.2 on hdisk1. (This approach is similar to how you can use Solaris' flash archives for OS installation on an alternate disk.) As an unrelated note -- we had dsmc core dump with internal program error while doing an incremental backup. Turns out it was because the Solaris snapshot filesystem was corrupted internally with some bad metadata, so it wasn't dsmc's fault after all. We unmounted, redid the snapshot, and re-mounted it; dsmc ran fine that time. (We also figured out the cause of the Veritas Volume Replication for the Oracle DB snapshot filesystem corruption and applied a small adjustment to prevent it in the future.) -Dan
Re: TSM 5.1 server on AIX 5.2 64-bit?
Both irrelevant and incorrect. The question was about the server, not the client. In IBM Announcement Letter ZP02-0494 (EMEA, find US/Canada equivalent) for ITSM v5.1.5 you can find: "Additional operating system support ... AIX 5.2 support for the Tivoli Storage Manager server, LAN and LAN-free backup-archive client (except HSM), Lotus Domino component of Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail, and ESS for Oracle, and ESS for DB2 components of Tivoli Storage Manager for Hardware ... ... The Tivoli Storage Manager server on AIX requires the following hardware and software: ... Operating system - IBM AIX 4.3.3 (32-bit) or later or, IBM AIX 5.1 (32-bit or 64-bit) or later" Regarding the client - you can look at ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/client/v5r1/AIX/AIX64bit/v516/IP22651.README.AIX51. "All TSM packages require following operating system level and components ... or AIX 5L 5.2 PPC" Bottom line: You can use both TSM server and client in 64-bit mode on AIX 5.2 if you are at or beyond particular maintenance level. In fact the client is supported *only* in 64-bit mode on AIX 5.2 according to the same Announcement Letter! Re: TSM 5.1 mount messages
Hi Tab, I thought perhaps that might be the issue since we had diags runnig on that library when it initially came up and it didn't initialize. I cancelled the diag on the arctic point and it initialized, and I later recycled the server but the problem persisted. I just completed shutting down the library, then powering it up, then recycling TSM, and the problem persists. In fact, right on initialization f that library I got: 08/11/03 12:34:06 ANR8451I 349X library IBM3494A is ready for operations. 08/11/03 12:34:06 ANR8447E No drives are currently available in library IBM3494A. >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/11/03 12:25PM >>> Lawrence, We're running TSM 5.1.7.0 on AIX 4.3.3. What we've seen is that if a TSM process that reserved the drive dies, those reservations are not cancelled. I had an export job abort on dismount failure, and *three days* later the input and output mount point reservations were still listed in the Q MOUNT report, even though the export was not restarted. It took a TSM reboot to clear those reservations. Could that be the cause of your problem? Upgrade to TSM 5.1 from 4.2
Other than the peculiar problem we are having with one of the two 3494 libraries we have, the upgrade went fairly smoothly. - Noticed, the AIX update_all did not install the 5.1 license file and that had to been selected explicitly and installed after the upgrade completed. - The upgrade DB only took a matter of minutes. From the list comments expected a long time, but since we had done a audit fix=yes 2 weeks ago, that may have been a factor. Our DB is 12GB at 75% utilization. - Of course, the licenses had to be reregistered.

Re: TSM 5.1 mount messages
Lawrence, We're running TSM 5.1.7.0 on AIX 4.3.3. When reporting problems, it does help to have all that contextual info so that we have the better chance of divining the issues... A TSM 'show libr' should reveal the drive state which TSM things is in effect. I would also do an mtlib query on the library to assure that it is fully operational, as in being Online, in Automated Operation State, etc. Beyond that I would give the 3494 a checkout at its operator panel, looking for drives being Unavailable, Int Req condition, or other problems. If you have ARTIC card or industrial PC problems, there's no way you'll be able to use the drives. Also check the drive front panels to assure that their path to the host is online - and that there are no tapes trapped in them. You can also do OS queries for drive state (e.g., AIX lsdev) to assure that they are okay at that level, necessary for TSM to use them. Richard Sims, BU

Re: Windows 2K sp4 och TSM 5.1
Tim I had a problem similar to yours (I think!) in my test environment. After I applied Win 2000 sp 4 to my TSM server I could no longer access the web admin gui on port 1580 from any machine. Is this the problem you are experiencing? If your issue is with Java have a look at the other helpful postings on web page. If you have the same problem as I did then just do netstat -a to see if TSM is listening on port 1580. In my case it turned out the a registry key hkey_local_machine\software\ibm\adsm\currentversion\server\server\options somehow got updated. It pointed to C:\Program Files\tivoli\tsm\server instead of server1. I have no idea how this happened (life is not always simple ;-) but when I pointed it to server1 again then things went back to working normally. Hope this helps Malcolm PLEASE NOTE - this is in no way to be construed as an official solution from IBM. This is simply the product of one guy's experience... :-)

I think if they want to have closed source driver, they could do it like NVidia does for their graphics driver. It is divided into two parts. Kernel independent binary module and wrapper module, which is open source and kernel version dependent and anyone can compile it with (almost) any version of linux kernel. Re: TSM 5.1 on linux kernel
It's my opinion that they could have done a better job of choosing which distros and kernels to offer out. My first choice would have been a recent SuSE professional (not the $600 enterprise version) distribution instead of Redhat 7.2 with an antiquated kernel that will not run on their X-series hardware. Otherwise, they could have picked a newer Redhat release. I'm using the SuSE enterprise 7 now on an X345 but that wasn't trivial to get up and running, either. SuSE is far less proprietary in their kernels than Redhat and I think it's really a shame that the only non-enterprise choice was Redhat 7.2. I've got it working (RH72), but it's not pretty and the SCSI support really doesn't work satisfactorily. Re: TSM 5.1 on linux kernel
Alex, I had the same problem and was very amazed that IBM, which I consider as a BIG linux promotor, does not maintain the tivoli for linux on an acceptable level. We had to go back to the specified kernel to get the scsi utilities working (IBMtape, tsmscsi). After trying with 8.0, we finally went back to the RH7.3 with the 2.4.9-31smp kernel. Big joke: that kernel did not recognize the ethernet card from the IBM X225 I ended with inserting an intel card. As this kernel version seems to work with the drives and library, I plan to stick onto this one and hope IBM will soon release a better version. Re: TSM 5.1 on linux kernel
G'day Alex, Unfortunately, the only SUPPORTed linux kernels are the ones as listed in the readme. Which means if you encounter any problems running a different kernel - you'll be asked to go back to the supported kernels to see if your problem still exists. As to the questions of vulnerabilities with running just the supported kernels - I guess there will be many views on that - but if your TSM server is running in your network, without public access, then I dont think you'd be any more vulnerable (infant I think you are less, but I digress) to running a Windows machine that doesnt have a service pack (or hot fix), that fixes know exploits. Now, if you want to run TSM on Linux without tape hardware (using say, virtual volumes or disk pools), then you really only need to be concerned with the GLIBC version that you are running. (I run TSM on Linux that is tapeless, on RH 7.3 custom kernel, without any problems.) If you need the old kernel, I have it on the A/NZ TUG site - details below. ...deon --- Have you looked at the A/NZ Tivoli User Group website? http://www.tuganz.org Deon George, Customer Support Account Engineer, IBM Australia Office: +61 3 9626 6058, Fax: +61 3 9626 6622, Mobile: +61 412 366 816, IVPN +70 66058 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ibm.com/tivoli "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote on 13/06/2003 12:04:16 AM: > Regarding TSM 5.1 Extended on RedHat Linux 9.0: > > When I read in the manual for TSM install, it said that TSM requires the > 2.4.9-31(smp) kernel. TSM 5.1 on linux kernel
Regarding TSM 5.1 Extended on RedHat Linux 9.0: When I read in the manual for TSM install, it said that TSM requires the 2.4.9-31(smp) kernel. I figured that meant that kernel or newer. Boy was I wrong. I'm trying to install drivers for my Overland library and drives, and it's giving me the: "The supported kernel levels are 2.4.9-31..." I assume others have hit this problem, and I'm curious what they've done? 1) Run a totally different OS? - AIX? Does TSM have any kernel problems with device drivers for Overland Neo 4100 Series libraries and Drives? Windows? - Windows 2000 Server? or just 2000 Pro? Anyone have a good experience with putting TSM 5.1 on Windows platform? (other than the usual windows troubles) 2) Run the old 2.4.9-31 kernel? Doesn't this leave your system vulnerable? And don't other rpm's require certain kernel levels? So if you kept using 2.4.9-31 kernel then you'd have a problem running other rpm's? What if we purchase RedHat Enterprise Linux? Will that platform run the 2.4.9-31 kernel reliably? 3) Some other solution? Recompile the new kernels with support for the device drivers? Please feel free to enter any input. I think we are willing to move to any other option, whatever is the best. Thanks in advance, Alex --- --- Alex Lazarevich | Systems Administrator | Imaging Technology Group Beckman Institute - University of Illinois [EMAIL PROTECTED] | (217)244-1565 | www.itg.uiuc.edu --- ---
TSM 5.1, AIX 5.1 ... DB Backup to Disk File .. how big can file get..
Hi, Does anyone know the limit of a TSM Database Backup To A DISK File? We are running TSM 5.1 on AIX 5.1, with JFS file systems I could not find a reference to the limit of the backup file size? If anyone has a manual/release note reference that would be appreciated... Thanks, Steve Taylor
Re: TSM 5.1 Client Install on Sun Solaris - Help Please
The README files are usually pretty idiot proof provided the idiot reads them. What version of Solaris are you running? I had a problem installing on a Solaris 5.7 and 5.8 client because it required certain patches to be installed from Sun for the libraries. Again, that would show up in the README. You need to install from Client CD.At the same time we have to check for License purchase and autorisation in TSM.You might have got Mannual on client. In spite of all this what else problem are you having. Please check /etc/system for proper parameters. * Setting for TSM set lwp_default_stksize=0x4000 Thanks Balanand Pinni -Original Message- From: Tony Morgan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2003 9:05 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: TSM 5.1 Client Install on Sun Solaris - Help Please Hi Tivoliworld, I am not a Unix Person, so I can't understand why my Unix people are having trouble getting TSM Client installed on some Sun boxes. Re: tsm 5.1 config STK L180 tape library
1. Yes, you will need a temporary license key, which you can receive through Gresham Inc. 2. You will need to configure the Gresham software, which is not that easy(it's not on a install-and-use basis). First, you'll have to configure the drives using TSM device driver, then map the drives to the correct ACSLS ID in the elm.conf. You can then use ./elm_testlibdesc -l LIBRARYNAME to test the connectivity to your ACSLS server. Be aware that you must be at ACSLS ver 6.0.1 or higher. Some other options within Gresham includes priority settings, randomization settings, pool settings(scratch pool within ACSLS) and so on. Upgrade to TSM 5.1 yet?
I would like to ask the group a question. Do any of you have thoughts about the "maturity" of the product, as it stands now? My boss is questioning whether we should hold at 4.2. on our four servers, or go ahead and upgrade to the 5.1.x.y available now. My experience has been that it is best to wait until Tivoli/IBM have used enough of us as "Beta Testers" to ensure a robust product. (They are certainly not the only ones!) Configurations: (1) Server is Sun UE450 running Solaris 8; clients are IRIX 5.3-6.5.18, SunOS 4., Solaris 2.5.1-9, RedHat Linux 7.1, Win2K, and NT4.0SP6. (2) Server is Sun UE450 running Solaris 7; clients are IRIX 6.3-6.5.x, Solaris 7-8, Win2K, and NT4.0SP6. (3) Server is Sun UE450 running Solaris 8; clients are IRIX 6.5.x and NT4.0SP6. (4) Server is IBM M-80 running AIX 5L 5.1; clients are IRIX 6.5.x, AIX 5L 5.1, RedHat Linux 7.2, Solaris 7-8, Win2K, and NT4.0SP6. (5) All libraries are IBM 3494, all tape drives are IBM 3590-E1A. If you think this discussion deserves a thread, please respond to group; otherwise, please respond personally. Thank you, Dennis Glover

Re: upgrade to TSM 5.1 from TSM 4.1
The cleanup backupgroups is a new command that isn't around until V4.2.2.X. It specifically cleans up issues with Win2K system objects and TSM's failure to properly expire them. It has been pointed out to me that it isn't required if you don't have the Win2K system object problem. This is true, however, it doesn't hurt to run it. If there is nothing to clean up then it will only run for a few minutes or even less. I did miss the fact that this e-mail was asking how to go from V4.1 to V5.1 and not from V4.2. If you have never been at V4.2 then I don't believe you need to run the cleanup. If you never backed up Win2K system objects then you don't have to run the cleanup. Sorry for any confusion this might have caused. I did the same, but then continued on to 5.1.5. No problems during upgrade as long as you follow the instructions. Make sure you choose the correct filesets for TSM (32 bit). I've heard where the upgrade db doesn't get done automatically for some (mine did), but that can be done manually. Re: upgrade to TSM 5.1 from TSM 4.1
I hope u don't mind that this isnt exactly what u axed for Upgrade was pretty smooth going from 4.2.1.x to 5.1 and then to 5.1.5 on Aix 4.3.3 ML10. Database was at the time approx 30GB took about 1/2 hour. Db is on high speed san disk. Then I attempted upgrading Aix to 5.1ML03. This is where I ran into some interesting but known and unknown issues. For ex opsys devices were all renamed. What could have drivn me nuts is that the san disks were also renamed- had that pegged tho. All tsm devices need to be redefined not too bad -I keep about 6 months of drm_plans that have all my defs. I am a glutton for punishment and also decided to upgrade to all latest microcode on my H80, installed latest tape drivers, firmware on switches and disk controllers in san etc etc During the upgrade migration of the operating system to 5.1 I decided to turn on 64 bit and upgraded the TSM s/w to 64 bit. This is where I ran into some real problems. My loss2k backups werent completing at all. After about 3 days of this I decided to drop the opsys back down to 32 bit and continued running TSM at 64 bit. I just recvd a ptf U483674 that allegedly addresses this problem and I have it on my second tsm server that I am activating In a couple weeks. If it werent for the NT issue all in all pretty smooth - time consuming tho - spent about 2 1/2 days doing all of this- Expiration processing took forever so I upgraded tsm to 5.1.5.4 didn't take very long -will take to 5.1.6.1 soon B4 doing this backup everything - and backup the operating system after every stage-u might need it Jose Rivera Ris Infrastructure -Original Message- From: Hart, Charles [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 04, 2003 2:09 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: upgrade to TSM 5.1 from TSM 4.1 We went from 4.1.5 to 5.1.5 on AIX 4.3.3 ML10. TSM 5.1 resource requirements
We have a 4.2.3.0 TSM server running under OS/390. We are having severe difficulties achieving acceptable performance with the amount of memory available on the system, and occasional difficulties with CPU capacity. We will have to migrate to 5.1 within a few months to maintain vendor support. How do 5.1 memory and processor requirements compare to those of 4.2?
Re: AIX 4.3.3 (32 bit) -------> AIX 5.2 (64 bit) | TSM 5.1(32bit) ------->TSM 5.1 (64 bit)
There is an AIX 5.1 64 bit mode tcpip bug you will want the fix for. It causes slow TSM backups. It is currently available as an efix but is suppose to be officially released next week. The apar number is IY36925. It goes on top of Aix 5.1 ML03. The work around is to run AIX is 32 bit mode.
AIX 4.3.3 (32 bit) -------> AIX 5.2 (64 bit) | TSM 5.1(32bit) -------> TSM 5.1 (64 bit)
- Hi I am going for upgradation of AIX on my TSM server and Production Server in few weeks. Before that i like to hear from ppl who had done it already. Environment: OS : AIX 4.3.3 ML 10 ( 32 bit ) TSM : TSM 5.1.0.0 server ( 32 bit ) We are planning to upgrade AIX 4.3.3 (32 bit) to AIX 5.2 (64 bit). What are the precaustions shuld i take? Can i restore the TSM db backup taken on 4.3.3 to 5.2? If i want TSM 5.1 64 bit, how should i go about it? Same time, we are upgrading AIX on Production server ( SAP R/3 ). TDP for ESS for R/3 1.1.10.1 is running on Production ( Primary Server ) and TSM Server (Backup Server). What are the issues involved in it? Thanks Regards Raghu.
Re: AIX 4.3.3 (32 bit) -------> AIX 5.2 (64 bit) | TSM 5.1(32bit) -------> TSM 5.1 (64 bit)
Hi As I understand it, you are going for a clean installation of AIX ver 5.2? If this is the case, there shouldn't be any problems, as long as you save your devconfig file and volhist file. There shouldn't be any problems restoring the database to TSM ver 5.1 64-bit. All you have to do is dsmserv upgradedb after the restore has completed. TSM 5.1(WinNT), STK 9310 and Library Station
Hi.. Well I would like to know if anyone has a setup like this, if so, I would like to know how you configured the tsm server... The setup I have: TSM 5.1 on windows 2000 StorageTek 9310 with Library Station on OS/390 Fibre attached drives direct to the tsm server. Library Attach from storagetek on the TSM server too. I haven't found out how to setup the connection for lib attach and library station yet. Best Regards Lasse
Re: TSM 5.1 Monitor into TSM Management Console
Before proceeding, upgrade to 5.1.1.6 (or later); there were problems in the 5.1 base, GUI-console (and web-admin) are not installed for proper operation. Upgrade to 5.1.1.0, from ftp site, then add patch level that you like (I would advise 6 or higher, imho). HTH! Anybody have AFS butc working with TSM 5.1?
I have an AIX 4.3.3.10 server running TSM 4.2.1.11 currently backing up 900gb/weekly of AFS data with butc. Is anybody presently using butc with TSM 5.1 on AIX 4.3.3, or with TSM 4.2 or 5.1 on AIX 5.1? If so, what version of AFS/butc are you using? If not, do you know of a timeframe by AFS/butc to produce a client for TSM 5.1? Ed Tostanoski UNC - Chapel Hill

Does anyone know a way to force a single 'dsmc sched' process to start a minimum number of threads (>= #tape drives), or know probable reasons why our configuration isn't doing it now? - rsvp with comments & tuning tips, thanks.
