Re: [AFMUG] OT cynical
This article (and a previous one at theverge.com) makes me want to use my old Panasonic 42” 720p plasma dumb TV forever, and not hook it up to any streaming devices either (too late, I’ve got a Roku connected to it). Even so, I’m probably screwed because it’s connected to an AT&T cable box which is probably collecting and monetizing the same data. At least none of them have cameras (AFAIK), although Google, Amazon or Facebook would happily sell me devices that listen to everything I see and also have cameras. This shouldn’t surprise anyone, but I wonder if people really know that TV and streaming device manufacturers don’t really make a profit selling the hardware, their profit comes from data, ads and crapware. https://www.howtogeek.com/401666/the-smart-tv-crapware-era-has-already-begun/ From: AF On Behalf Of Bill Prince Sent: Sunday, January 20, 2019 9:34 AM To: AnimalFarm Microwave Users Group Subject: Re: [AFMUG] OT cynical The DVR+ is one TV only; don't know about the Stream+. The Amazon thing seems to be the only one that looks like it does everything right, and doesn't have any subscription fees. The only things I don't like (without having actually used it) are that you have to use a Fire TV to connect to it, and it's a bit on the pricey side. The AirTV does almost everything I want, but not quite... Tablo also looks pretty good, but it's got monthly fees. They replaced the DVR+ with the Stream+. It looks mostly similar, but is cheaper. Re: [AFMUG] OT cynical
Similar to the DVR+. It has 2 tuners, which works great for us. If you're watching live TV, you can pause/rewind/fast forward. You can record two programs while watching a pre-recorded show. It also has several "streaming channels", but we almost never watch them through the DVR+. If we want to stream something, we go through the Roku. Roku connects us to pretty much anything we're interested in; Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Vudu. There must be 30 or 40 different streaming thingies. -- bp part15sbs{at}gmail{dot}com On Sat, Jan 19, 2019 at 3:22 PM Mathew Howard wrote: > So, the AirTV does have an ethernet port on it, and it works fine to just > plug it into the lan instead of using wifi. Re: [AFMUG] OT cynical
So, the AirTV does have an ethernet port on it, and it works fine to just plug it into the lan instead of using wifi. After it's setup, the over the air channels show up in the Sling app, just like the Sling streaming channels. They do give you the option of signing up for a free account if you don't want to subscribe to Sling. The biggest problem I see with it, is that you can't pause and rewind live tv... you can start recording something and then go watch the recorded program to be able to pause and rewind, but that's a bit of a pain. They do have another box, the AirTV Player (which is basically an Android TV box with a USB tuner that plugs into it), that does let you pause and rewind live TV, but it only works for one TV, and you need to have an antenna connected to it. I have 4 channel masters I plan on giving to my worst enemy next Christmas. I have been using Tablo for a month and mostly really like it singing gets stuck on a blank screen. Haven't tracked that down yet. Might be due to marginal signal.
