Yeah, yeah.

I guess next best thing is to add an outdoor rated reverse twistlock 20A plug
to the side of the cabinet and use an internal solution for the automatic
transfer part.

I’ll go start perusing the RV/Yachting pages for that.

Ok cute.

So you plug your portable generator into the "Inverter" side of this switch?

And I imagine then you can leave the generator there and let it flip
back to utility power on its own.  Is that the idea?

Try searching for ’static transfer switch’ in Google. There are a number of
them available, including 1U designs for single input AC gear where you have

Yes, that's the idea. When the generator runs out of fuel, the transfer
switch automatically switches back to commercial power (assuming it's back
on) and you can go retrieve the generator at your convenience.

Actually I stole most of this idea from Nate Burke.

Re: [AFMUG] Looking for a 20A Auto Transfer Outdoor switch/plug

2020-09-10 Thread Ken Hohhof
No, I don’t think so. Some are.

You want to avoid the ones that won’t switch off commercial power until it
drops below something like 80 V. Those are fine for boats and RVs to switch
between shore power and an inverter, because the commercial power is either
there or it isn’t. But at our tower sites, it seems like at least half of
power failures are partial voltage, we see anything from 60 to 90 volts, and
most electronics won’t run on that. Nothing pisses me off like driving to a
tower site that’s down, and finding 4 days worth of fully charged batteries for
the inverter, but the ATS is delivering 85 volts to the loads thinking that
should be just fine.

Re: [AFMUG] Looking for a 20A Auto Transfer Outdoor switch/plug

2020-09-10 Thread Mark Radabaugh
Most transfer switches are latching relays - the coil is only used to switch
them from one state to the other. A latching relay does not require power to
stay in a given position.

A really simple solution is a contactor (heavy duty relay) with the utility
power wired to the coil to hold the relay on when utility power is available
with the power wired through the NO contacts (normally open contacts), and the
generator power through the NC contacts. Or reverse that so that de-energized
relay supplies utility power and when you connnect the generator it pulls in
the coil, disconnects the utility, and puts the load on the generator.

Re: [AFMUG] Looking for a 20A Auto Transfer Outdoor switch/plug

2020-09-10 Thread Jason Wilson
The Prowatt will favor one over the other. I have my AC main going to the
favored port. When utility comes on it takes over the the generator is
allowed to run out of fuel. The generators input comes from an outlet on
the outside of the cabinet.

I second these, theyre cheap and easy, we hardwire them and w put plugs on
them for portable generator

this one has more whistle

I went to 30 amp plugs. No one will steal your extension cords. I make all of
mine.

Kisae TS-20. Available from Inverter Supply.

Buy a small NEMA4 box with a backplate, tap 2 holes, and mount it with 2
screws. Photo shows a TS-15 but there’s also a 20 amp version.

We’ve also put a Leviton male outdoor outlet on the side of the enclosure so
you can plug in a generator without even opening the enclosure.

I should have just asked this here first instead of the Facebook groups.

Sometimes people are just so lazy it makes me doubt humanity.

All I got out of Facebook so far with this questions is idiots mansplaining
hack about things I already know.

Anywho:
